Abstract:Hydrophobic modification of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst can inhibits water gas shift(WGS) reaction and regulates product distribution. Herein, a series of hydrophobic Fe2O3@SiO2-xHDTMS (Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, HDTMS. x represents the amount of HDTMS.) catalysts with various HDTMS content were synthesized for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to light hydrocarbons. The Fe2O3@SiO2-xHDTMS catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometer(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FT-IR) and contact angle measuring instrument(CAMI). After HDTMS modification, the hydrophobicity of the catalyst is significantly improved, the selectivity of the catalyst to CO2 is significantly reduced due to the inhibition of WGS reaction, and the selectivity of hydrocarbon products is significantly improved. This indicates that HDTMS is very suitable as a silanizer for hydrophobic modification of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts. With the increase of HDTMS content, the hydrophobicity of the catalyst always increased, but the selectivity of CO2 in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products decreased first and then increased, and the selectivity of hydrocarbons increased first and then decreased, indicating that the content of HDTMS has a significant impact on the hydrophobicity and catalytic performance of the catalyst.
Preparation of Fe@Si/S-34 Catalysts and Its Catalytic Performance for Syngas to Olefins

Abstract:The direct synthesis of light olefins from syngas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction is a promising technology for direct synthesis of olefins from syngas. The key is to improve the selectivity of light olefins through the regulation of product distribution. In this work, the hydrophobic Fe@Si catalyst was prepared by room temperature solid state methodStober-silylation method, and then the catalyst was combined with SAPO-34 molecular sieves with different contents to prepare Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalysts. The effects of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content on the physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, NH3 temperature programmed desorption and water contact angle measurement. The results showed that the content of SAPO-34 molecular sieve has significant influence on the surface area, pore volume, acidity and hydrophobicity of the catalysts. With the increase of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the catalyst increased, the weak acid and medium-strong acid sites increased, and the hydrophobicity weakened. The catalytic performance evaluation results showed that the Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalyst decomposed C5+ hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons, significantly reduced the selectivity of C5+ products and increased the selectivity of C2 similar to C4 hydrocarbons. Appropriate SAPO-34 molecular sieve could significantly improve the selectivity of C2 similar to C-4 olefins. When the mass ratio of Fe@Si catalyst to SAPO-34 is 2, the C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity of Fe@Si/S-34 catalyst is the highest, the conversion of CO is 80.0%, the selectivity of CO2 in the product is 8.9%, and the selectivity of C-2 similar to C-4 olefins is 31.1%. In this study, the hydrophobicity of Fe@Si catalyst and the cracking activity of SAPO-34 molecular sieve for C5+ hydrocarbon were coupled together to inhibit the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, reduce the CO2 selectivity and obtain higher C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity, which provided a new strategy for the development of catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to olefins.

Abstract:Iron-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalyst is widely used for syngas conversion, but its iron carbide active phase is easily oxidized into Fe 3 O 4 by the water produced during reaction, leading to the deterioration of catalytic performance. Here, we show an efficient strategy for protecting the iron carbide active phase of FTS catalyst by surface hydrophobization. The hydrophobic surface can reduce the water concentration in the core vicinity of catalyst during syngas conversion, and thus inhibit the oxidation of iron species by water, which enhances the C − C coupling ability of catalyst and promotes the formation of long-chain olefins. More significantly, it is unraveled that appropriate shell thickness plays a crucial role in stabilizing the iron carbide active phase without Fe 3 O 4 formation and achieving good catalytic performance.

Abstract:The effect of Fe3+ doping level on the surface properties and catalytic performance of a series of iron-doped titanium oxide catalysts (1-7 mol% Fe3+) prepared using an acid-catalyzed sol-gel method was investigated in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with CO2. The characterization of catalysts was carried out by means of x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and the method of Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET). It was found that the capacity of isolated Fe3+ centers in titania matrix is responsible for the catalytic performance; the catalysts exhibit the best activity at the loading level of Fe3+, about 3 mol%. In addition, it was shown that the appropriate pore size of the catalysts ranges from 5 nm to 25 nm; the selectivity to styrene increases with an increase in the specific surface area of the appropriate pores.

Abstract:The Cu–Zn–Al slurry catalysts prepared via modified sol–emulsion–gel method by adding different water-soluble surfactants were studied for CO hydrogenation to produce dimethyl ether (DME) in slurry bed reactor. The results indicated that the catalyst adding Tween80 or PEG600 had higher activity than the catalyst with the PVP additive. All the catalysts had good stability. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that Cu and Cu2O existed in the pre-reduced Cu–Zn–Al catalysts, while ZnO did not appear. Nitrogen adsorption studies showed that the catalyst prepared with the additives of PEG600 or Tween80 was mesoporous structure with higher specific surface area compared with the one prepared with the additive of PVP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that the Cu/Zn ratio on the surface of all catalysts increased after subject to reduction and reaction. The morphology and size of the catalyst particles could be adjusted by adding water-soluble surfactants.

Abstract:The γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles coated with DBS and CTAB were prepared by the microemulsion method. The microstructure was researched using synchrotron radiation. The XPS results reveal the chemical bonds between γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and surfactant groups. The Mössbauer spectra at room temperature were measured for the coated samples. The EXAFS results show substantial effect of the surface modification on the local atomic structures. The coated samples exhibit an enhanced nonlinear optical response. The coated layers were found to have a significant influence on the electron structures of the nanoparticle surface.

Abstract:Surfactants are often found to be associated with atmospheric particles. They can change the physicochemical properties of these particles, and thereby impact their chemical reactivity. However, their influences on heterogeneous reactions of atmospheric trace gases have not been paid much attention. In this study, the impacts of different surfactants on the heterogeneous conversion of SO2 on hematite were investigated by using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), including cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-100). Results indicated that heterogeneous reactivities of hematite-surfactant mixtures were significantly different due to the presence of different surfactants. Under dry conditions, heterogeneous reactivities decreased with the increase of their concentrations, but the higher reactivities were observed at an appropriate concentration range of CTAB and SDS when compared to pure hematite, showing their promoting effects at this concentration range. Under the condition of 58% relative humidity, the heterogeneous reactivities increased first and then decreased with the increasing mass fractions of CTAB and SDS, but pure hematite showed the highest reactivity. While the mixtures containing Triton X-100 had stronger ability to suppress sulfate formation under 58% RH than under dry condition, though these mixtures under 58% RH presented same trend as under dry condition. Water molecules can renew surface reactive sites and promote sulfate formation at an appropriate mass fraction of CTAB or SDS, water molecules can also promote the adsorption mode transition of Triton X-100 from adsorption through terminal OH groups to adsorption through ethoxyl groups, resulting in more surface active sites being covered and a drastically decrease in the reactivity. A possible mechanism for the impact of surfactants on the heterogeneous conversion of SO2 on hematite is proposed, and atmospheric implications based on these results are discussed.

Abstract:Highly dispersed α-Fe2O3 catalyst systems were prepared by impregnating NaY, NaZSM-5 and AlPO4-5 with (NH4)3Fe(C2O4)3 solution and calcining at elevated temperature. Dispersion thresholds of α-Fe2O3 on the molecular sieves have been observed and determined by X-ray diffraction phase analysis and positron annihilation spectroscopy. Temperature-programmed reduction has shown that strong oxide—support interaction prevents dispersed iron oxide from sintering and reducing to metal iron. The activity and selectivity of the highly dispersed α-Fe2O3 catalyst systems towards ethylbenzene dehydrogenation were investigated and compared with bulk α-Fe2O3 and commercial catalyst GS-01. α-Fe2O3/NaY and α-Fe2O3/AlPO4-5 systems show high activity and selectivity ( >95% ) for ethylbenzene dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Mössbauer measurements, electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, have been used for investigating the Fe3O4 microcrystals coated with different surfactants. The experimental results show that the surface condition of the system changes and the anisotropy energy constantK of Fe3O4 microcrystals increases effectively when the surfactants being added. The spin pinning effect on a sample surface was observed and the pinning depth and the pinning direction were estimated. Besides, it has been shown that the anisotropy energy constantK of the coated Fe3O4 has an abrupt change nearbyTv.

Abstract:The improvement of the sulfur tolerance over Pt catalyst is critical for the hydrotreatment of crude oil. Fe was co‒impregnation with Pt on γ-Al2O3 at different calcination temperature. Results revealed that adding Fe significantly facilitated the reduction of Pt oxides for the catalyst calcined at 400 °C. The morphological analysis and CO chemisorption showed Fe improved the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. The surface chemical state analysis implied the co‒existence of the electron‒deficient Pt and metallic Fe. However, the increase of calcination temperature caused a decreased reducibility of Pt oxides due to strong metal support interaction. A higher dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization conversion of 97.7 % with a dominant biphenyl selectivity of 96.7 % were acquired for the catalysts incorporated with Fe. The density functional theory calculations confirmed the alloyed Fe led to the formation of electron‒deficient Pt atoms, and the higher affinity to sulfur made Fe be a favorable additive for noble metal catalyst in the hydrodesulfurization.

Abstract:Nonoxidative dehydrogenation is promising for production of light olefins from shale gas, but current technology relies on precious Pt or toxic Cr catalysts and suffers from thermodynamically oriented coke formation. To solve these issues, the earth-abundant iron catalyst is employed, where Fe species are effectively modulated by siliceous zeolite, which is realized by the synthesis of Fe-containing MFI siliceous zeolite in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic sodium (FeS-1-EDTA). Catalytic tests in ethane dehydrogenation show that this catalyst has a superior coke resistance in a 200 h run without any deactivation with extremely high activity and selectivity (e.g., 26.3% conversion and over 97.5% selectivity to ethene in at 873 K, close to the thermodynamic equilibrium limitation). Abstract:Highly loaded cobalt catalysts (80% by weight) with different supports (SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and MgO) were prepared by the co-precipitation technique for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Microcalorimetric adsorptions of NH3, CO2, CO and H2 showed that the surface acidity/basicity significantly affected the surface properties of supported Co, as evidenced by the changes of strengths of adsorption of CO and H2 on Co, which in turn affected the FTS performance. The appropriate ratio (~1.2) of heats for the adsorption of CO and H2 on Co seemed important in determining the FTS activity.

Abstract:FePt nanoparticles were successfully prepared via a wet-chemical reduction process,and the complex surfactants oleic acid and oleylamine;citric acid and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as well as single surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)were chosen to stabilize the as-synthesized system.The surfactants effect on the FePt particles morphology and magnetic properties were compared.XRD,TEM and VSM characterizations indicate that the surfactants have no effect on the particles structure,all the as-synthesized FePt particles possess chemical disordered face centered cubic(FCC) structure,the complex surfactants induced to produce anisotropic morphologies,and the polymer surfactant PEG lead to rice-shape and rod-shape nanostructure.VSM results show that all the as-synthesized nanoparticles possess paramagnetic behavior at room temperature and the spherical particles have the largest Ms while the rod-shape nanoparticles possess the smallest Ms.

Abstract:In order to develop an iron-based catalyst with high attrition resistance and stability for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS), a series of experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of SiO2 and its hydroxyl content and a boron promoter on the attrition resistance and catalytic behavior of spray-dried precipitated Fe/Cu/K/SiO2 catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by means of N2 physisorption, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2-thermogravimetric analysis (H2-TGA), temperature-programmed reduction and hydrogenation (TPR and TPH), and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The FTS performance of the catalysts was tested in a slurry-phase continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR), while the attrition resistance study included a physical test with the standard method and a chemical attrition test under simulated reaction conditions. The results indicated that the increase in SiO2 content enhances catalysts’ attrition resistance and FTS stability, but decreases activity due to the suppression of further reduction of the catalysts. Moreover, the attrition resistance of the catalysts with the same silica content was greatly improved with an increase in hydroxyl number within silica sources, as well as the FTS activity and stability to some degree. Furthermore, the boron element was found to show remarkable promotion of FTS stability, and the promotion mechanism was discussed with regard to probable interactions between Fe and B, K and B, and SiO2 and B, etc. An optimized catalyst based on the results of this study was finalized, scaled up, and successfully applied in a megaton industrial slurry bubble FTS unit, exhibiting excellent FTS performance.

Abstract:Different amounts of Fe promoted Rh–Mn–Li/SiO2 catalysts were prepared and investigated for the synthesis of C2 oxygenates from syngas. The results showed that the low amount of Fe (≤0.1wt.%) improved the reactivity and yield of C2+ oxygenates, but an opposite effect appeared at high content of Fe (>0.1wt.%). Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to probe the effects of Fe on CO adsorption and hydrogenation, and two opposing effects were evidenced. Moreover, it is proposed that the facile transformation of dicarbonyl Rh+(CO)2 into H–Rh–CO is responsible for high selectivity of C2+ oxygenates.

Abstract:Fine face-centered cubic (FCC) nickel powders were synthesized by liquid phase reduction with different surfactants. The products were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser particle size analyzer and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that the type, dosage and relative molecular mass of surfactants significantly impact the purity, dispersion property, particle size, size distribution and morphology of the products. The nonionic surfactants poly ethylene glycol (PEG) and polyethylene glycol sorbitan monostearate (Tween) showed better dispersing ability in the reaction system than the others. The optimal mass ratios of surfactant to Ni are 100 mg/g and 150 mg/g for PEG-600 and Tween-40, respectively. The products obtained in the optimal conditions have ideal morphology and narrow size distribution. Moreover, study on the relative molecular mass effect revealed that with the increase of the relative molecular mass of Tween, the morphology of nickel powders changed from sphere to spiny ball.

Abstract:Surface modified g-C3N4 supported iron catalysts were prepared using ultrasonic-assisted impregnation and employed as model catalysts to investigate the surface modification effects on product distribution in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. Characterizations evidenced that both hydroxyl and amino groups were grafted on the g-C3N4 surface. Results showed that the selectivity of light olefins in hydrocarbons was increased from 12.3% on pure Fe3O4 to 31.5% on Fe/C3N4 further to 38.4% on Fe/AMC3N4 under same reaction condition as well as elevated activity owing to electron transfer of amino groups. But high CO2 selectivity was inevitable via the enhanced water gas shift reaction. H2O2 treatment increased the hydrophilicity of g-C3N4, resulting in predominance of water-assisted pathway promoted the chain growth. Compared with Fe/C3N4, the CH4 selectivity for Fe/OHC3N4 was significantly reduced from 38.4% to 22.8%. The Fe/OHC3N4 also exhibited lower CO2 selectivity of 11.4% than Fe/AMC3N4 of 24% due to the enrichment of surface hydroxyl. Surface modification played a critical role in tuning the product distribution and promoting the formation of light olefins with low C1 by products (CH4 and CO2).
