Abstract:To improve the mechanical properties of carbon fibers/lithium aluminosilicate (Cf/LAS) composites, Cf/LAS with in-situ grown SiC nanowires (SiCnw-Cf/LAS) were prepared by chemical vapor phase reaction, precursor impregnation, and hot press sintering, consecutively. The effect of multi-scaled reinforcements (micro-scaled Cf and nano-scaled SiCnw) on the mechanical properties was investigated. The phase composition, microstructure and fracture surface of the composites were characterized by XRD, Raman Spectrum, SEM, and TEM. The morphology of SiCnw has a close relation with the content of Si. Microstructure analysis suggests that the growth of SiC nanowires depends on the VLS mechanism. The multi-scale reinforcement formed by Cf and SiCnw can significantly improve the mechanical properties of Cf/LAS. The bending strength of SiCnw-Cf/LAS reaches to 597 MPa, achieving an increase of 19% to Cf/LAS. Moreover, the samples show a maximum fracture toughness of 11.01 MPa m1/2, achieving an increase of 46.4% to Cf/LAS. Through analysis of the fracture surface, the improved mechanical properties could be attributed to the multi-scaled reinforcements by the pull-out and debonding of Cf and SiCnw from the composites.

Abstract:In order to obtain higher mechanical properties,dense homogeneous Csf/BAS glass ceramic matrix composites were fabricated by hot pressing.The effects of Csf content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope,transmission electron microscope,three-point bending and single-edge notch beam tests.The results show that the mechanical properties of BAS can be effectively increased by incorporation of the short carbon fibers.The flexural strength and the toughness of 30 vol% Csf/BAS are 255 MPa and 3.45 MPa·m1/2,respectively.The main toughening mechanisms are crack deflection,fiber pull-out and bridging.Substituting 25 mol% Sr for Ba in the BAS matrix could promote BAS phase transformation from hexacelsian to celsian,resulting in further improvement of its mechanical properties.

Abstract:B4C/Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 (B4C/LAS) composites with different B4C contents were fabricated using hot-pressing technique. Mechanical properties of the B4C/LAS composites were investigated as a function of initial B4C content. The addition of B4C deteriorated both fracture toughness and flexural strength of the composites initially. B4C/LAS composites demonstrated improved mechanical properties when initial B4C content increased to 10wt.%. XPS, XRD and TEM analyses illustrated that a chemical reaction took place between B4C and LAS matrix. The synergism of high relative density, high crystallinity and fine grain size, was responsible for improved mechanical properties of B4C/LAS composites.

Abstract:Carbon fibers reinforced lithium aluminosilicate matrix composites（Cf/LAS） were prepared by slurry infiltration combined with a hot press procedure. The friction, wear behavior, and wear mechanisms of C f /LAS composites under dry sliding conditions were investigated. The results show that the coefficient of friction（COF） initially increased with the increase in carbon fiber content, and reached the maximum value of 0.20 for the 33%C f /LAS composite. The COF increased sharply with increasing sample temperature from RT to 300 °C. The COF remained stable in the temperature range of 300–500 °C. The two wear mechanisms of LAS glassceramics are fatigue wear and abrasive wear. The C f /LAS composites demonstrate slight spalling and shallow scratches. These results show that carbon fibers improve the mechanical properties and wear resistance of C f /LAS composites.

Abstract:In this paper, Al2O3–Si3N4/ZrO2–Al2O3 laminated composites were fabricated by tape casting and hot press sintering, and the relationships between the process, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al2O3–Si3N4/ZrO2–Al2O3 laminated composites were determined. The SiAlON phase was found in the Al2O3–Si3N4 layer, and liquid-phase sintering was proposed. Nano-scratch tests were carried out to investigate the interface bonding strength of the laminates. The distribution of residual stresses, generated due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion between the different layers, was estimated according to lamination theory and confirmed using Vickers indentation. When the sintering temperature was 1550°C, the sintered laminated ceramics had good mechanical properties, with a maximum strength and toughness of 413MPa and 6.2MPam1/2, respectively. The main toughness mechanics of laminated composites was residual stress.

Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties, the mechanisms of strengthening and toughening for the 10%Cf/SiO2 composite prepared by vacuum hot-pressing, were studied. The SiO2 glass matrix crystallized partially after hot-pressing. The composite has a lamellar structure with the carbon fibers in parallel with the hot-pressing plane. The bending strength, fracture toughness and fracture strain of the composite are significantly improved, compared with that of the matrix. Bridging and pulling-out of carbon fibers and crabon fibers and crack deflection induced by the carbon fibers are the principal mechanisms of strengthening and toughening.

Abstract:Fabrication processing of unidirectional short carbon and Nicalon fiber-reinforced LAS composites was investigated. The parameters influencing dispersion and orientation of short fiber were also discussed. It was shown that the homogeneity of dispersion of short fibers is much better by stirring in mixing solution of ethylene glycol and aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution than by other methods. The unidirectional alignment of short fibers in pre-preg can be obtained by doctor-blade casting. The samples fabricated in the study have excellent strength and toughness.
Enhanced mechanical properties in Cf/LAS composite with yolk-shell structure interface

Abstract:A new approach to improve the interfacial matching of carbon fiber-reinforced lithium-aluminum-silicon(Cf/LAS) composites is proposed, which is achieved by Ni nanoparticles catalyzing the formation of a tunable graphite layer on the surface of Cf. The interfacial structure between the composites can be effectively improved by tuning parameters such as Ni2+ content and sintering holding time, and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the composites can be improved. Interestingly, due to the introduction of Ni2+, a yolk-shell type graphite layer is formed between the Cf and LAS, and the bridging effect of the graphite layer improves interfacial bonding. The highest flexural strength (515 ± 30 MPa) and fracture toughness (14.7 ± 1.6 MPa·m1/2) were obtained. Taking Cf/LAS as an example, the relationship between interfacial matching and mechanical properties of composites is systematically investigated and may provide a new idea for the improvement of mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites.

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) composites have been fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS) combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI) using SiC powder mixed with various contents (0∽32 vol%) of chopped carbon fiber (CCF) as reinforcement phase and carbon source. The introduction of an appropriate amount of CCF could reduce the shrinkage and step effect caused by slicing, improving the forming quality of the CCF/SiC preforms after pyrolysis. Meanwhile, as a carbon resource, CCF could react with molten silicon to form the β‐SiC, improving the mechanical properties of CCF/SiC composites. The result showed that the CCF/SiC powder showed excellent fluidity, and the angle of repose of the CCF/SiC powder was 32‐40 ° when the proportion of CCF was less than 24 vol%. The shrinkage of CCF/SiC preforms was lower than 1.74 % and 1.94 % along the non‐additive and additive manufacturing directions, respectively. The apparent porosity of CCF/SiC preforms attained the lowest of 47.3 % and the bulk density reached a maximum of 1.35 g/cm3 when the CCF content was 8 vol%. Compared without CCF, the bending strength and fracture toughness of the CCF/SiC composites improved from 137.9 MPa and 2.69 MPa·m1/2 to 177.1 MPa and 3.10 MPa·m1/2, respectively. This study is believed to provide a new strategy for additive manufacturing of high‐performance CCF/SiC composites with high CCF content by SLS. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A novel method has been developed to fabricate SiC/Al composites by the combination of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and vacuum-pressure infiltration. The effects of the SiC particle size distribution and pre-oxidation on the microstructure and properties of SiC/Al composites were investigated. A new phenomenon of severe lamellar cracking was observed in SiC/Al composites without pre-oxidation treatment, which can be explained in terms of the mechanism of interlayer binding. The results showed that the residual porosity of the sample without pre-oxidation treatment s was higher than 3%, with a maximum of (8.16 ± 0.57) %, which was much higher than that of the pre-oxidised samples(1% ∼2%). The bulk density of the powders was significantly improved by designing the material system with mono-, bi-, and tri-modal particle size distributions and the density of final SiC/Al samples gradually increases from 2.804 ± 0.009 to 2.871 ± 0.008 g/cm 3 , and the volume fraction of SiC increases from 36.7 vol% to 50.1 vol%. As a result, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of SiC/Al composites varies consistently with the volume fraction of SiC, decreasing from 13.72 to 10.84 × 10 -6 °C −1 . Our study shows that this method has the potential for great applications.

Abstract:Performance degradation always occurs in carbon fibers/carbon nanotubes (CFs/CNTs) multi-scale reinforced composites prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. In this study, pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interlayers are introduced to overcome this problem, and the mechanism is studied in detail. The multi-scale reinforcements are combined with lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass-ceramic into ceramic matrix composites by slurry impregnation and hot pressing sintering. The results show that the PyC interlayers can protect the CFs from corrosion of the catalyst at high temperature, improve stress transfers and promote the synergy between various components. The CNTs and LAS matrix form a transition area, which causes deflection and shunting when cracks propagate. These factors have greatly increased the crack extension energy, so the mechanical properties have been greatly improved. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture reach 602 ± 55 MPa, 10.7 ± 2 MPa m1/2, 4.6 ± 0.7 kJ m−2, respectively, which are 42.3%, 42.6% and 76.9% higher than CF/LAS. This work expands the study of the CFs/CNTs multi-scale reinforcements and the LAS composites, and provides a useful reference for the related research.

Abstract:Abstract Fiber damage and uniform interphase preparation are the main challenges in conventional short fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. In this work, we develop a novel processing route in fabrication of short carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 -SiC composites (C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC) overcoming the above two issues. At first, C sf preforms with oriented designation and uniform PyC/SiC interphase are fabricated via direct ink writing (DIW) of short carbon fiber paste followed by chemical vapor infiltration. After that, ZrB 2 and SiC are introduced into the preforms by slurry impregnation and reactive melt infiltration, respectively. Microstructure evolution and optimization of the composites during fabrication are investigated in detail. The as-fabricated C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC composites have a bulk density of 2.47 g/cm 3 , with uniform weak interphase and without serious fiber damage. Consequently, non-brittle fracture occurs in the C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC composites with widespread toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection and bridging, interphase debonding, and fiber pull-out. This work provides a new opportunity to the material design and selection of short fiber reinforced composites.

Abstract:Preparation technology, mechanical properties and microstructure of SiC whisker reinforced Si3N4 laminated ceramic composite sintered with La2O3 and Y2O3 additives were investigated in this paper. Gelcasting and hot-pressure sintering technologies were used to obtain the laminated SiCW/Si3N4 composite. Flexure strength and fracture toughness of the testing material are 517MPa and 16.8MPam(1/2) at room temperature, and 295MPa and 9.1MPam(1/2) at 1350 degreesC respectively. Analysis of the fracture morphology and microstructure of the composite indicated that step fracture, interfacial cracking and microcrack in laminate are the main reason for improving the mechanical properties. At high temperature, BAS glass phase produced by components causes the mechanical properties of the testing material decrease obviously.

Abstract:This paper deals with the microstructure and mechanical properties of reaction bonded silicon carbide reinforced with random chopped carbon fibers of 3mm length. The composites were fabricated by dispersing chopped carbon fibers into bimodal SiC/C suspension, forming green body through slip casting, and then reaction sintering at 1700°C. The effect of the chopped fiber fraction on microstructure and mechanical properties was evaluated. A significant increase of fracture toughness was obtained as the carbon fiber fraction approaches 30vol.%. The chopped fibers had reacted with liquid silicon during reaction sintering, so little fiber pullout was observed. Crack deflection and bridging is the predominant mechanism for the composite toughening.

Abstract:Boron doped carbon fibers reinforced lithium aluminosilicate matrix composites (Cf/LAS) were prepared via slurry infiltration following by hot pressing procedure, and characterized by TG-DTA, XRD analysis and TEM. Their thermal expansion behavior and thermal conductivity properties were investigated across various temperatures. Dense composites samples (>99%) were sintered at 1350°C for 0.5h. The XRD data revealed an occurrence of single-phase β-spodumene in boron doped Cf/LAS composites. Boron doping increased the thermal stability of Cf/LAS composites in oxidizing condition, where the weight loss of Cf/LAS composites decreased with increasing boron content. Boron doped Cf/LAS composites exhibited nearly zero thermal expansion at the temperature range from room temperature to 720°C. The thermal conductivity of boron doped Cf/LAS composites was also higher than that of boron free Cf/LAS composites. These properties were correlated with the interfacial microstructure between the fiber and the matrix as determined by TEM results.
The Effect of Loading Rate on the Fracture Characteristic of Csf/LAS Composite

Abstract:In this paper, the fracture characteristic of a Csf/LAS composite with Li2O-A12O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic as matrix reinforced with short carbon fibres was studied. The results show that, with the increase of loading rate, the fracture work rwof of the composite decreas-es, while the bending strength increases first and then decreases. The bending strength reaches its maximum when the loading rate is 500 MIPa/s. The SEM observations on the ma-terial show that, at a low loading rate, there exists obvious fibre-drawing out, while almost none at a high loading rate, and the fibres appear in bending state.

Abstract:Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)-fabricated Al matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles are strongly influenced by SiC particle features. In this study, the microstructural features, mechanical properties, and porosity of moderate volume fraction (10 vol%) microscale SiC-particle-reinforced AlSi10Mg composites fabricated by LPBF under different oxidation temperatures of SiC particles were investigated. The results demonstrate that LPBF-deposited SiCp/AlSi10Mg composites mainly exhibited laser track segments in macroscale and fine cellular-like dendrite grains and (Al + Si) eutectic phases within the melt pool on a microscale. The transition layer of MgAl2O4 was present around the SiC particles in the oxidized-SiCp reinforced AlSi10Mg composites. In addition, the pore spatial distribution of the deposited composites using the microcomputed tomography test and the microstructural formation mechanism using Thermal Calc software were also studied. Using the finite element to model the deposited composites, it was found that the stress and strain distribution presented higher values than those without long-stripe precipitation phases in the deposited parts with long-stripe precipitation phases. The LPBF-fabricated oxidized-10 vol% SiCp/AlSi10Mg composite part with a relatively large ultimate tensile strength (-405.3 MPa), relative density (-98.89%), compressive strength (-1046 MPa) and friction coefficient (0.32) were obtained. In particular, the ultimate tensile strength was larger than that of the other reported SiCp/AlSi10Mg composites with similar volume fractions and particle sizes.

Abstract:Three series of Al2O3/Al laminated ceramic matrix composites, named SPA, SPV and HP, were fabricated by different methods. SPA and SPV were prepared using Al2O3 slices and Al slurry via screen printing and subsequent heat treatment in air or vacuum. HP samples were made by hot pressing the layered stack of Al foils and Al2O3 slices. SEM and XRD were applied to analyze the microstructure and the interlayer crystal phase. The bending strength, fracture toughness and fracture work of the samples made by the three methods were measured and compared. The results show that the composites have much better toughness and higher fracture work than the Al2O3 slice. Among the samples made by the three methods, the samples made by hot pressing have the optimum mechanical performance. The displacement-load curves and fracture mechanism were analyzed.

Abstract:The C-f-SiCf-(Al2O3p)/KGP composites were successfully prepared by the method that mixing a kind of hybrid fiber preform pre-developed and geopolymer resin. The synergistic effects of the hybrid fibers and Al2O3 particles on the composites were investigated. Results show that all the composites showed typical amorphous structure. Mechanical properties of the C-f-SiCf-(Al2O3p)/KGP composites were improved remarkably due to the addition of the hybrid fibers and Al2O3 particles. The flexural strength and Young's modulus of the C-f-SiCf-Al(2)O(3)p/KGP composites with 1 mm length SiCf were reached 62.4 +/- 2.1 MPa and 24.1 +/- 1.6 GPa, respectively. The C-f-SiCf-(Al(2)O(3)p)/KGP composites showed non-catastrophic behavior rather than the catastrophic failure.

Fabrication and mechanical properties of Csf/LAS composites
