Abstract:A new class of substituted tetraphosphane ligands has been developed and applied in the rhodium-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation of terminal olefins. The high regioselectivity (linear selectivity is above 97 % for 1-octene and 1-hexene) at high temperature (140 degrees C) shown by these tetraphosphane ligands is remarkable considering the low regioselectivity commonly observed under similar reaction conditions when other bisphosphane analogues are used. The steric and electronic effects of substituents on the diarylphosphane moiety have also been examined.

Abstract:Rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of 1,5-hexadiene to corresponding dialdehydes was investigated using tetraphosphorus ligands. These ligands showed a high regioselectivity for linear aldehydes (linear to branch ratio up to 98%) in very good yield (up to 87%). It was found that the introduction of the substituents at the ortho position of the biphenyl moiety has little effect on the regioselectivity and the electron-donating substituents retard the reaction somewhat.

Abstract:Based on the synthesis of a new kind of room temperature ionic liquids, quaternary ammonium alkanesulfonate salts tailed with polyether chain to their alkyl group, a thermoregulated ionic liquid biphase system composed of IL PEG750 , n ‐heptane and toluene was developed. The system was applied in the hydroformylation of 1‐dodecene catalyzed by Rh/TPPTS complex. Under the optimum conditions, the conversion of 1‐dodecene and yield of aldehyde are 99% and 97%, respectively. In addition, the catalyst could be easily separated from products by phase separation and efficiently recovered. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A new triphosphorus ligand, Tribi, was developed for the regioselective linear hydroformylation of terminal and internal olefins. Abstract:dodecene hydroformylation was carried out in aqueous/organic biphasic system containing water soluble rhodium\|phosphine complex RhCl(CO)(TPPTS)\-2, ligand TPPTS [P( m \|C 6H 4SO 3Na) 3] and cationic surfactant cetyltrimetylammonium bromide(CTAB). The kinetic data showed that the reaction was zero order for olefin under atmospheric pressure. When the concentration of CTAB is 4.0×10\+\{-3\} mol/L, the reaction rate is 200 times faster than that in the absence of CTAB. In order to explore the role of CTAB in the system, we determined the binding of ligand TPPTS to micelle interface and solubilization of 1\|dodecene in CTAB micelles using spectrophotometry. The effect of RhCl(CO)(TPPTS)\-2, ligand TPPTS and 1\|dodecene on apparent average molecular weight of CTAB micelle was investigated by light scattering. The results showed that the solubilization of 1\|dodecene in micelle solution increases obviously when the CTAB concentration is higher than its CMC . The addition of RhCl(CO)(TPPTS)\-2 and TPPTS to CTAB aqueous solution causes the increase of the apparent average molecular weight of CTAB micelle from 32.3 kg/mol to 45.5 kg/mol. The addition of 1\|dodecene in the above mentioned solution further increases the apparent average molecular weight from 45.5 kg/mol to 50.0 kg/mol.\;These results demonstrate that the acceleration of 1\|dodecene hydroformylation in biphasic catalytic system in the presence of CTAB can be attributed to: (1) the binding of RhCl(CO)(TPPTS)\-2 and TPPTS to cationic micelle interface, which led the rhodium catalyst to concentrate greatly on the interface of micelle; (2) 1\|dodecene solubilization in micelle, which is favorable for olefin coordination with rhodium catalysts. The synergistic effects of the two factors creat a favorable microenvironment for 1\|dodecene hydroformylation.

Abstract:A persisting problem in homogenous olefin hydroformylation is the recovery and reuse of the expensive rhodium catalyst. The aqueous/organic biphasic catalysis offers a feasible way to solve the problem of separation of products from catalysts. However, owing to very low solubility of higher olefin in the aqueous phase and the higher energy barrier of olefin transfer from the organic phase to the aqueous phase, the reaction rate is extremely low. The addition of a surfactant is a practical way to accelerate long-chain alkene hydroformylation in aqueous/organic bisphasic solution. In this paper, the influence of cetyltrihydroxyethyl ammonium bromide (CTHAB) on 1-octene hydroformylation in aqueous/organic two-phase solution with HRh(CO)(TPPTS)(3) as catalyst and TPPTS [P(m-C6H4SO3Na)(3)] as ligand was investigated. It was confirmed that a complex formed between CTHAB and HRh(CO)(TPPTS)(2) and the complex was further led to the enrichment of the catalytically active species on the micelle surface. Compared with the traditional surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), results showed that the addition of surfactant CTHAB not only accelerated the 1-octene hydroformylation but also improved the molar ratio of linear to branched aldehydes. The effects of various reaction parameters, such as concentration of surfactants, [TPPTS]/[Rh] molar ratio, pressure of syngas and recycling number of catalytic system were investigated. Under the mild conditions: [Rh]=0.8 mmol/L, [TPPTS]/[Rh]=40, [CTHAB]=4.0 mmol/L, 90 degrees C, 0.5 MPa, 1.5 h, the TOF and the molar ratio of linear to branched aldehydes reached up to 497 h(-1) and 25.6, respectively. The catalyst-containing aqueous could be easily separated from organic phase and efficiently reused for seven times without evident loss of activity and regio-selectivity. Meanwhile, the hydroformylation of different chain length olefins was also promoted by CTHAB.

Abstract:The integration of dual asymmetric catalysis is highly beneficial for the synthesis of organic molecules with multiple stereocenters. However, two major issues that need to be addressed are the intrinsic deactivation of dual-species and the extrinsic conflict of reaction conditions. To overcome these concerns, we have utilized the compartmental and thermoresponsive properties of poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) to develop a cross-linked PNIPAM-hydrogel-supported bifunctional catalyst. This catalyst is designed with Rh(diene) species situated on the outer surface and Ru(diamine) species positioned within the interior of the hydrogel. The compartmental function of PNIPAM in the middle overcomes intrinsic mutual deactivations between the dual-species. The thermoresponsive nature of PNIPAM allows for precise control of catalytic pathways in resolving external conflicts by controlling the reaction switching between an Rh-catalyzed enantioselective 1,4-addition at 50°C and a Ru-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) at 25°C. As we envisioned, this sequential 1,4-addition/reduction dual enantioselective cascade reaction achieves a transformation from incompatibility to compatibility, resulting in direct access to γ-substituted cyclic alcohols with dual stereocenters in high yields and enantio/diastereoselectivities. Mechanistic investigation reveals a reversible temperature transition between 50°C and 25°C, ensuring a cascade process comprising a 1,4-addition followed by the ATH process.

Abstract:The ionic Rh(III) -complexes la and 2a exhibited poor catalytic performance for hydroformylation of 1-octene without the presence of any auxiliary additive. The involvement of cheap and low-toxic tertiary amines such as Et3N or N-methylpiperidine could dramatically boost the catalytic performance of compounds la and 2a up to turnover frequency(TOF) of 800 h(-1). When piperidinyl-functionalized ionic liquid of [PEmim] BF4 was dually used as the additive and the solvent, not only the positive roles of N-methylpiperidine in spurring up the activity of compounds la and 2a were embodied, but also the easy recovery and recycling of compounds la(or 2a) in [PEmim] BF4 were fulfilled in biphasic hydroformylation. The TOFs of compounds la and 2a in [PEmin] BF4 were gradually decreased in the course of the recycling uses due to the leaching and deactivation of the catalysts.

Abstract:New phosphines with self-assembling 6-pyridinone moities were prepared, characterized, and examined in the hydroformylation of diverse olefins. Testing various known and novel ligands in the presence of [Rh(COD) 2 BF 4 ] under industrially relevant conditions, the hydroformylation of 1-octene proceeds best with 6,6'-(phenylphosphanediyl)bis(pyridin-2(1H)-one) (DPONP). Control experiments and modelling studies indicate dimerization of this ligand at higher temperatures (>100°C). The optimal catalyst system is able to conserve high product linearity (>90%) for a broad range of olefins at industrially-employed temperatures at low ligand loading.

Abstract:Heterogeneous hydroformylation catalysts have attracted much attention to overcome the separation challenges of homogeneous systems. Herein, we proposed a semi-theoretical model to predict the apparent activity and regioselectivity over Rh-based phosphide catalysts. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to understand the surface reaction mechanism and to determine the rate determining step (RDS) to either linear or branched aldehydes. The kinetic expressions were further studied based on equilibrium hypothesis using the information of RDS obtained from DFT calculations. The semi-theoretical model was verified by condition experiments. Using this model, the regioselectivity of products could be effectively regulated according to production requirements by simply changing the temperature and pressure conditions. The highest selectivity to branched aldehydes reached 95% at a conversion of 98% and the corresponding TOF was 204 h-1, which was comparable with the best homogeneous Rh catalysts.

Abstract:Synthesis of a chelating phosphite-phosphine ligand from a tris(quinoxaline) extended resorcin[4]arene and its application in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal alkyl alkenes are reported. Rhodium complexes are formed within the cavity of the macrocycle and branched-selective hydroformylation of 1-octene with a b/l ratio of 5.9 has been achieved at 60 °C under 1:1 H2/CO (20 bar).

Abstract:Phospholane-phosphites are known to show highly unusual selectivity towards branched aldehydes in the hydroformylation of terminal alkenes. This paper describes the synthesis of hitherto unknown unsaturated phospholene borane precursors and their conversion to the corresponding phospholene-phosphites. The relative stereochemistry of one of these ligands and its Pd complex was assigned with the aid of X-ray crystal structure determinations. These ligands were able to approach the level of selectivity observed for phospholane-phosphites in the rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of propene. High-pressure infra-red (HPIR) spectroscopic monitoring of the catalyst formation revealed that whilst the catalysts showed good thermal stability with respect to fragmentation, the C=C bond in the phospholene moiety was slowly hydrogenated in the presence of rhodium and syngas. The ability of this spectroscopic tool to detect even subtle changes in structure, remotely from the carbonyl ligands, underlines the usefulness of HPIR spectroscopy in hydroformylation catalyst development.

Abstract:This paper reported the hydroformylation of 1-butene catalyzed by water-soluble rhodium phosphine complex in two-phase catalytic system.The effects of reation temperature,pressure,molar ratio of phosphine to rhodium,catalyst concentration,partial pressure ratio of CO to H_(2) and substrate concentration on the hydroformylation were investigated in detail.The results indicated that RhCI(CO)(TPPTS)_(2) showed excellent activity and good regioselectivity.Under the reaction conditions:100℃,2.5MPa,/=25,the TOF (Turnover Frequency) for aldehyde and selectivity for n-pentanal were up to 2500 h~(-1) and 87.5%, respectively.

Abstract:The development of a catalyst that delivers high activities and selectivities with excellent durability is of great importance. Numerous efficient catalysts suffer from the inherent hydrolysis liabilities, plaguing their practical applications. Herein, we show that this challenge can be tackled by constructing them into superhydrophobic porous frameworks, as exemplified by a water-sensitive phosphite ligand, tris(2-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite. The efficiency and long-term stability of the developed system are remarkably high in the hydroformylation of internal olefins after metalation with Rh species, superior to the corresponding homogeneous analogues. The significantly boosted hydrolytic stability allows for catalytic transformations using water as a green solvent, which not only facilitates the isolation of the products, but also furnishes the aldehydes with higher regioselectivities for the desired linear form in comparison with that operated under benchmark conditions using toluene as a reaction medium. Given these promising results, we anticipate the strategy advanced herein will form the basis for constructive perspectives in the enhancement of the water resistance of catalysts and the development of high performance hydroformylation catalysts.

Abstract:The utilization of stimuli-responsive hydrogels as bifunctional catalysts for an aqueous sequential organic transformation to prepare chiral organic molecules is not only environmentally friendly but also complements the synthetic limitations of mutually contradictory multistep reactions. However, finding a solution to the incompatible conflicts arising from complicated multicomponent cross-interactions in sequential transformations presents a significant challenge. To address this issue, we have developed a core-shell-structured hydrogel as a site-isolated bifunctional catalyst. This catalyst features a thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) as a switching function via a reversible transition between its hydrogel and solution phases that perfectly matches a temperature-tuned base-catalyzed Aldol condensation/oxa-Michael addition at 70 °C and the ruthenium-catalyzed dynamic kinetic resolution asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (DKR-ATH) process at 40 °C. As we envision, through the harmonization of the conflicting sequential reactions, this Aldol condensation/oxa-Michael addition/DKR-ATH cascade process can be achieved by transitioning from incompatibility to compatibility, enabling direct access to chiral chromanols with 1.3-position dual stereocenters from commercially available orth–hydroxyl arylketones and aldehydes. Mechanistic investigations, which involve monitoring the cascade reaction and analyzing the deuterium-labeling experiments, reveal a domino-like Aldol condensation/oxa-Michael addition/DKR-ATH sequential route comprising an initial Aldol condensation/oxa-Michael addition followed by the subsequent DKR-ATH process.
