Abstract:A new class of substituted tetraphosphane ligands has been developed and applied in the rhodium-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation of terminal olefins. The high regioselectivity (linear selectivity is above 97 % for 1-octene and 1-hexene) at high temperature (140 degrees C) shown by these tetraphosphane ligands is remarkable considering the low regioselectivity commonly observed under similar reaction conditions when other bisphosphane analogues are used. The steric and electronic effects of substituents on the diarylphosphane moiety have also been examined.

Abstract:CO 2 as a substitute for CO in hydroformylation is promising for alleviating greenhouse effect. Phosphine ligand has a significant impact on the regioselectivity of olefin hydroformylation with CO 2 . Compared with complex and expensive bisphosphine ligands, easily available and inexpensive monophosphine ligands are potential for widespread application especially in industrial hydroformylation. However, the regioselectivity of monophosphine ligand catalysts is still unsatisfactory. Herein, we proposed synergistic effect existing in two types of monophosphine species, which was copolymerized in a concise manner. The single-atom catalysts (Rh-POL-PPO&PPh 3 ) obtained through such a strategy, are efficient for olefins/CO 2 hydroformylation with high regioselectivity (l/b = 18.4) and conversion (94.9 %), which is comparable to diphosphine ligand. The characterization and DFT calculations reveal that high hydroformylation regioselectivity is attributed to the synergistic effect between two monophosphine species, which endows the catalyst with better configuration of active sites, and can promote the association of Rh with the terminal carbon of olefin.

Abstract:Hydrocarboxylation of terminal alkynes with formic acid (FA) was accomplished over a multifunctional ligand (L2) modified Pd-catalyst, advantageous with 100% atom-economy, free use of CO and H2O, mild reaction conditions, and high yields (56–89%) of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids with 100% regioselectivity to the branched ones. The multifunctional ligand of L2 as a zwitterion salt containing the phosphino-fragment (-PPh2), Lewis acidic phosphonium cation and sulfonate group (-SO3 −), was constructed on the skeleton of 1.1′-binaphthyl-2.2′-diphenyl phosphine (BINAP) upon selective quaternization by 1,3-propanesultone. It was found that L2 conferred to the Pd-catalyst the co-catalytic effect, wherein the phosphino-coordinated Pd-complex was responsible for activation of all the substrates (including CO, FA and alkyne), and the incorporated phosphonium cation was responsible for synergetic activation of FA. The 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis supported that FA was truly activated by the incorporated Lewis acidic phosphonium cation in L2 via “acid-base pair” interaction. The in situ FT-IR spectra demonstrated that, the presence of Ac2O and NaOAc additives in the catalytic amount could dramatically promote the in situ release of CO from FA, which was required to initiate the hydrocarboxylation.

Abstract:A new triphosphorus ligand, Tribi, was developed for the regioselective linear hydroformylation of terminal and internal olefins. It was shown to have excellent catalytic activity and regioselectivity. More importantly, the synthesis of the new triphosphorus ligand was scaled-up (>140 g scale) for practical industrial use. An effective method was also developed for the stepwise replacement of PPh3 by Tribi for potential industrial use.

Abstract:The effect of positive charges in the diphosphino-imidazolium salts of L2 was investigated in terms of coordinating character, structures of corresponding Ir-complexes and catalysis for hydroformylation. It was found that the involved positive charges exhibited strong electron-withdrawing effect on the neighbored phosphine fragment, rendering L2 more pi-acceptor ability than the corresponding neutral counterpart of L1. Consequently, the changed coordinating ability of L1 and L2 led to the variety in the structures and components for the Ir-complexes (Ir-L1a, Ir-L1b, Ir-L2a, and Ir-L2b). The complexation of L2 with Ir(acac)(CO)(2) led to a novel five-coordinate Ir(II)-complex of Ir-L2a chelated by a PCC (phosphine-carboanion-carbene) pincer in tripodal mode, whereas the complexation of L1 with Ir(acac)(CO)(2) led to a four-coordinate square-planar KO-complex of Ir-L1a chelated by a PCP (phosphine-carboanion-phosphine) pincer. Abstract:The hydroformylation of olefins, known as the "oxo reaction", involves the use of syngas (CO/H2) to produce aldehyde with an additional carbon atom. However, side reactions such as the isomerization or hydrogenation of olefins often result in unexpected products and other by-products. Recent efforts in developing efficient ligands represent the most effective approach to addressing these challenges. In this study, we described a Bis-OPNN phosphorus ligand facilitated Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation with a high degree of linear selectivity across various olefins. Under mild conditions, a broad range of olefins were efficiently converted into linear aldehydes with high yields and excellent regioselectivity. The protocol also showed impressive functional group tolerance and was successfully applied to modify drugs and natural products, including the total synthesis of (±)-crispine A. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that this Bis-OPNN phosphorus ligand anchoring the rhodium catalyst is crucial for controlling the linear selectivity.

Abstract:A cobaltaelectro-catalyzed dehydrogenative [4+2] annulation of arylphosphinamides with alkynes was proposed in the present study to selectively construct a range of cyclic phosphinamide derivatives. Picolinic acid acted as a ligand to promote this transformation. A total of 38 examples demonstrated broad substrate scope, sufficient functional tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. Moreover, no additional oxidants and electrolytes were needed and it was possible to achieve gram scale synthesis, late-stage diversification and the removal of the directing group. Cyclic voltammetry and kinetic isotope experiments provided a better understanding to the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Construction of valuable vicinal Si,O-alkanes, which exhibit potential utility in pharmaceuticals and materials science, has yet to be restricted to prefunctionalized reactants. Plenty of efforts have been made, using alkenes as nonprefunctionalized starting materials. Despite that, methodology starting from easily accessible alkynes has been rarely developed, and vicinal Si,O-alkanes containing Si-H have seldom been explored. Here, we report one-pot two-step cobalt-catalyzed sequential hydrosilylation/hydroxylation of terminal alkynes with commercially available TEMPO and diphenylsilane via ligand relay catalysis, featuring low catalyst loading (1 mol %), mild conditions, and broad substrate scope. The successful execution of the double hydrofunctionalization protocol ensures that the vicinal Si,O-alkanes with characterized Si-H are obtained smoothly in good yields and regioselectivity. The derivatizations of the Si-H bond are also demonstrated, delivering silanol, siloxane, and tetra-substituted silane. The possible mechanism has been proposed based on control experiments and computational studies.

Abstract:Cooperative bimetallic catalysis is a fundamental approach in modern synthetic chemistry. We report bimetallic cooperative catalysis for the direct decarbonylative heteroarylation of ubiquitous carboxylic acids via acyl C-O/C-H coupling. This novel catalytic system exploits the cooperative action of a copper catalyst and a palladium catalyst in decarbonylation, which enables highly chemoselective synthesis of important heterobiaryl motifs through the coupling of carboxylic acids with heteroarenes in the absence of prefunctionalization or directing groups. This cooperative decarbonylative method uses common carboxylic acids and shows a remarkably broad substrate scope (>70 examples), including late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and streamlined synthesis of bioactive agents. Extensive mechanistic and computational studies were conducted to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction. The key step involves intersection of the two catalytic cycles via transmetallation of the copper-aryl species with the palladium(II) intermediate generated by oxidative addition/decarbonylation.

Abstract:Dicarbonylsalicylaldoximatorhodium (Rh(sox)(CO)(2)) combined with phosphorous ligands exhibits high activity for hydroformylation of olefins under mild conditions. The reaction rate and regioselectivity strongly depend on the phosphorous ligands and substrate. In the case of styrene, the branched aldehyde is the major product, almost pure 2-phenylpropanal can be afforded at 1.0 MPa. In the case of 1-hexene, n-aldehyde is predominant over iso-aldehyde. Diphosphine ligands are much more active than monophosphine ligands, but the latter give higher regioselectivity for n-aldehyde. Increasing the CO/H-2 ratio results in a decrease of reaction rate and the regioselectivity towards n-aldehyde, probably due to the formation of more hydridic LnRhH. These catalytic systems are inert for hydrogenation of olefins under hydroformylation reaction conditions, but isomerization of 1-hexene was found and it may be inhibited by an excess of phosphines. Abstract:A novel three-step tandem hydroformylation–acetalization–hydrogenolysis was first proposed to produce alcohols (derivatives) from olefins, and the developed unique Ru(III)-complex [Ru(III)-L2] ligated by the ionic diphosphine (L2) proved efficient toward this tandem reaction. In Ru(III)-L2, the strong π-acceptor nature of L2 guaranteed Ru-center remaining in +3 valence state without redox reaction. Hence, Ru(III)-L2 was able to behave as a bifunctional catalyst merging RuIII–P complex and RuIII Lewis acid, which acted not only as a transition metal catalyst responsible for hydroformylation of olefins and hydrogenolysis of (hemi)acetals but also as a Ru3+ Lewis acid in charge of acetalization of aldehydes [to form (hemi)acetals]. The easily performed acetalization served as a bridge step to get through the pathway from aldehydes to alcohols instead of the direct hydrogenation.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-catalysed hydroformylation of epoxides to -hydroxyaldehydes was developed. Compared to previous works this methodology proceeds under significantly milder conditions (70 °C; 40 bar of CO/H2 = 1:1). Crucial for the activity of the cobalt catalyst is the use of phosphine oxides, especially tricyclohexylphosphine oxide, as cheap and easily available promoters. The hydroformylation reaction can be easily combined with a consecutive one-pot hydrogenation of the in situ generated β-hydroxyaldehydes to produce directly 1,3-diols starting from epoxides. The rapid formation of a mononuclear acyl cobalt carbonyl complex as an intermediate was observed by in situ FTIR spectroscopy.

Abstract:The hydroformylation reaction is used on a large industrial scale to convert olefins and synthesis gas (CO + H-2) into aldehydes. Researchers have recently discovered that a class of cationic Co(II) complexes of the formula [Co-II(PP)(acac)](+) (PP = diphosphine, acac = acetylacetonate) can catalyze hydroformylation with activity approaching that of the widely used rhodium catalysts (Hood, D. M. et al. Science 2020, 367, 542-548). This density functional theory (DFT) study reveals the detailed workings of the cationic Co(II) catalyst system. The precatalyst [Co-II(PP)(acac)](+) is initiated by reacting with H-2 and CO to generate active species [HCoII(CO)(2)(PP)](+). In comparison with the 18-electron neutral Co(I) catalytic species HCoI(CO)(3)(PR3), these cationic Co(II) species, with their unique 17-electron and square pyramidal structure, invoke a lower-energy pathway through different elementary steps such as associative alkene uptake and heterolytic H-2 cleavage. The regioselectivity for linear aldehyde products is due to a combination of electronic and steric effects that favor the anti-Markovnikov insertion of a terminal alkene into the Co-H bond. DFT calculations predict that addition of PMe3 would facilitate the precatalyst initiation, thereby decreasing the reaction temperature or shortening the induction period. The insights gained by this theoretical study can be useful for the further development of hydroformylation catalysts.

Abstract:The first highly regioselective and general osmium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes is reported. The combination of Os-3(CO)(12) and imidazoyl-substituted phosphine ligands allows n-selective (up to 99%) hydroformylation of bulk aliphatic as well as functional alkenes in good yields (64-87%).

Abstract:A novel Co-based catalytic system was developed for the hydroformylation of the mixed C8 olefins. The effect of phosphine oxide (Ph3PO) ligand and phosphine (Ph3P) ligand on the hydroformylation of the mixed C8 olefins catalyzed by cobalt was compared. Co-Ph3PO catalytic system showed high activity in the hydroformylation and 42-51% yields of C9-aldehydes were obtained. However, the activity of Co-Ph3P catalytic system was very low. The effect of solvents and the influence of reaction conditions were also studied in Co catalyzed hydroformylation of the mixed C8 olefins. The polar solvents such as methanol and ethanol are necessary for the formation of C9-aldehydes. The suitable reaction temperature and synthesis gas pressure were 160°C and 8 MPa for Co-Ph3PO catalytic system. Abstract:The use of synergistic catalytic strategy can usually circumvent the intrinsic limitations of one catalytic system. In this communication, we disclose a cooperative catalysis strategy of manganese and iminium catalysis to realize selective hydroalkenylation of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. Its success stems from the LUMO activation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds with secondary amines as the organocatalyst and the synergistic HOMO activation of alkenylboronic acids with Mn2 (CO)8 Br2 . This protocol exhibits several synthetic advances, e.g., simple operation, good functional group compatibility and good regioselectivity. The theoretical calculation indicates the migratory insertion followed by demetallation-isomerization process is kinetically more favorable than Michael-like nucleophilic addition. The use of proline-derived organocatalyst can deliver the desired products in moderate enantioselectivity.
