Abstract:Ordered M1Zn1 intermetallic phases with structurally isolated atom sites offer unique electronic and geometric structures for catalytic applications, but lack reliable industrial synthesis methods that avoid forming a disordered alloy with ill-defined composition. We developed a facile strategy for preparing well-defined M1Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles (i-NPs) catalysts from physical mixtures of monometallic M/SiO2 (M = Rh, Pd, Pt) and ZnO. The Rh1Zn1 i-NPs with structurally isolated Rh atom sites had a high intrinsic selectivity to ethylene (91%) with extremely low C4 and oligomer formation, which outperform the reported intermetallic and alloy catalysts in acetylene semihydrogenation. Further studies revealed that the M1Zn1 phases were formed in situ in a reducing atmosphere at 400 oC by a Zn atom emitting-trapping-ordering (Zn-ETO) mechanism, which ensures the high phase-purity of i-NP. This study provides a scalable and practical solution for further exploration of Zn-based intermetallic phases and a new strategy for designing Zn-containing catalysts.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of ultrasmall atomically ordered intermetallic nanoparticles is a challenging task, owing to the high temperature commonly required for the formation of intermetallic phases. Here, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-confined co-reduction strategy is developed for the preparation of sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles, by employing the well-defined porous structures of calcinated ZIF-8 (ZIF-8C) and an in situ co-reduction therein. HAADF-STEM, HRTEM, and EDS characterizations reveal the homogeneous dispersion of these sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles within the ZIF-8C frameworks. XRD, XPS, and EXAFS measurements further confirm the atomically ordered intermetallic phase nature of these sub-2 nm PdZn nanoparticles. Selective hydrogenation of acetylene evaluation results show the excellent catalytic properties of the sub-2 nm intermetallic PdZn, which result from the energetically more favorable path for acetylene hydrogenation and ethylene desorption over the ultrasmall particles than over larger-sized intermetallic PdZn as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, this protocol is also extendable for the preparation of sub-2 nm intermetallic PtZn nanoparticles and is expected to provide a novel methodology in synthesizing ultrasmall atomically ordered intermetallic nanomaterials by rationally functionalizing MOFs.

Abstract:Intermetallic alloying of one active metal to another inert metal provides not only the improved dispersion of active centers but also a unique and homogeneous ensemble of active sites, thus offering new opportunities in a variety of reactions. Herein, we report that PdZn intermetallic nanostructure with Pd-Zn-Pd ensembles are both highly active and selective for the semihydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, which is usually inaccessible due to the sequential hydrogenation to ethane. Microcalorimetric measurements and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the appropriate spatial arrangement of Pd sites in the Pd-Zn-Pd ensembles of the PdZn alloy leads to the moderate sigma-bonding mode for acetylene with two neighboring Pd sites while the weak pi-bonding pattern of ethylene adsorption on the single Pd site, which facilitates the chemisorption toward acetylene and promotes the desorption of ethylene from the catalyst surface. As a result, it leads to the kinetic favor of the selective conversion of acetylene to ethylene.
Au@Pt Nanotubes within CoZn-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Semi-hydrogenation of Acetylene

Abstract:Designing nanocatalysts with synergetic functional component is a desirable strategy to achieve both high activity and selectivity for industrially important hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we fabricated a core-shell hollow Au@Pt NTs@ZIFs (ZIF, zeolitic imidazolate framework; NT, nanotube) nanocomposite as highly efficient catalysts for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene. Hollow Au@PtNTswere synthesized by epitaxial growth of Pt shell on Au nanorods followed with oxidative etching of Au@Pt nanorod. The obtained hollow Au@PtNTs were then homogeneously encapsulated within ZIFs through in situ crystallization. By combining the high activity of bimetallic nanotube and gas enrichment property of porousmetal-organic frameworks, hollow Au@Pt NT@ZIF catalyst was demonstrated to show superior catalytic performance for the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene,in terms of both selectivity and activity, over those of monometallic Au and solid bimetal nanorod@ZIF counterparts. This catalysts design idea is believed to be inspirable for the development of highly efficient nanocomposite catalysts.

Abstract:Replacing precious metals with cheap metals in catalysts is a topic of interest in both industry and academia but challenging. Here, a selective hydrogenation catalyst was prepared by thermal treatment of Cu(OH)2 nanowires with acetylene-containing gas at 120 °C followed by hydrogen reduction at 150 °C. The characterization by means of transmission electron microscopy observation, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that two crystallites were present in the resultant catalyst. One of the crystal phases was metal Cu, whereas the other crystal phase was ascribed to an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) phase. The reduction of freshly prepared copper (II) acetylide (CuC2) at 150 °C also afforded the formation of Cu and CuxC crystallites, indicating that CuC2 was the precursor or an intermediate in the formation of CuxC. The prepared catalysts consisting of Cu and CuxC exhibited a considerably high hydrogenation activity at low temperatures in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the ethylene stream. In the presence of a large excess of ethylene, acetylene was completely converted at 110 °C and atmospheric pressure with an ethane selectivity of <15%, and the conversion and selectivity were constant in a 260 h run.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is an important type of organic transformation with large-scale industrial applications. This transformation requires efficient catalysts with precise selectivity control, and palladium-based metallic catalysts are currently employed. Here we show that four-coordinated cationic nickel(II) confined in zeolite can efficiently catalyze the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, a key process for trace acetylene removal prior to the polymerization process. Under optimized conditions, 100% acetylene conversion and an ethylene selectivity up to 97% are simultaneously achieved. This catalyst system also exhibits good stability and recyclability for potential applications. Spectroscopy investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal the heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen molecules and the importance of hydride and protons in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. This work provides an efficient strategy toward active and selective zeolite catalysts by utilizing the local electrostatic field within the zeolite confined space for small-molecule activation and by linking heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Achieving high ethylene selectivity and activity simultaneously for acetylene selective hydrogenation still remains challenging. Here, the challenge of the trade-off between activity and selectivity was solved by synergizing electronic effects and spatial confinement, which was achieved by confining the Ni-Co-Cu trimetallic nanoparticles in a carbon layer (NixCuyCoz@C/Al2O3). Compared to the catalyst without carbon encapsulation (NixCuyCoz/Al2O3), NixCuyCoz@C/Al2O3 showed superior catalytic performance in terms of enhanced activity, selectivity and stability. Under optimal conditions, acetylene conversion of 100% and ethylene selectivity of 89% were achieved, whereas NixCuyCoz/Al2O3 exhibited lower acetylene conversion (92%) and ethylene selectivity (21%). Detailed characterizations reveal that the electronic structure can be regulated flexibly by controlling the composition of Ni-Co-Cu nanoparticles. The enhanced activity and selectivity were attributed to the weakened adsorption of acetylene and ethylene on the electron-rich Ni. The improved stability was related to the carbon layer, which suppressed the acetylene coupling by the acidic sites on the Al2O3 surface.

Abstract:Noble metals play a momentous role in heterogeneous catalysis but still face a huge challenge in selectivity control. Herein, we report isolating contiguous Pt atoms and forming Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles as an effective strategy to optimize the selectivity of Pt catalysts. Contiguous Pt atoms are isolated into single atoms and Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles are formed which are supported on hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (PtZn/HNCNT), as confirmed by aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectrometry measurements. Interestingly, this PtZn/HNCNT catalyst promotes the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenylacetylene to 4-aminophenylacetylene with a much higher conversion ( > 99%) and selectivity (99%) than the comparison samples with Pt isolated-single-atomic-sites (Pt/HNCNT) and Pt nanoparticles (Pt/CN). Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the positive Zn atoms assist the adsorption of nitro group and Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles facilitate the hydrogenation on nitro group kinetically.

Abstract:Pt3Zn1 and Pt1Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles supported on SiO2 were synthesized by combining atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO, incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) of Pt, and appropriate hydrogen reduction. The formation of Pt1Zn1 and Pt3Zn1 intermetallic nanoparticles was observed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). STEM images showed that the 2-3 nm Pt-based intermetallic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on a SiO2 support. The relationships between Pt-Zn intermetallic phases and synthesis conditions were established. In situ XAS measurements at Pt L3 and Zn K edges during hydrogen reduction provided a detailed image of surface species evolution. Owing to a combined electronic and geometric effect, Pt1Zn1 exhibited much higher reactivity and stability than Pt3Zn1 and Pt in both the direct dehydrogenation and oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene reactions.

Abstract:The design of cheap, non-toxic, and earth-abundant transition metal catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes remains a challenge in both industry and academia. Here, we report a new atomically dispersed copper (Cu) catalyst supported on a defective nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G), which exhibits excellent catalytic performance for the selective conversion of acetylene to ethylene, i.e., with high conversion (95%), high selectivity (98%), and good stability (for more than 60 h). The unique structural feature of the Cu atoms anchored over graphene through Cu-C bonds ensures the effective activation of acetylene and easy desorption of ethylene, which is the key for the outstanding activity and selectivity of the catalyst.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of acetylene is a vital process to for the purification of crude ethylene in petroleum industry. Achieving high activity and selectivity simultaneously over Ni-based catalysts is still challenging. Herein, a partial encapsulation strategy is proposed by fabricating carbon-encapsulated Ag nanoparticles and un-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles on Al 2 O 3 surface (Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 ) toward the enhanced selectivity without loss of activity. In particular, the Ni-Ag@C/Al 2 O 3 exhibits higher ethylene selectivity of 81% at the complete acetylene conversion along with excellent stability for 30-h, in sharp with the Ni/Al 2 O 3 (6%) and Ni-Ag/Al 2 O 3 (54%) catalyst. The enhanced selectivity is attributed to the promotion of hydrogen spillover by the carbon species on Al 2 O 3 surface and the inhibition of oligomer formation by a steric hindrance formed by the carbon layer on the Ag surface. This study provides a new structural design avenue of bifunctional bimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Gold nanocatalysts have been reported to be active in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. In this paper, a series of Au/Ce1−xZrxO2 (x = 0.03 to 0.5) supported catalysts with different ratios of Ce to Zr were prepared and their catalytic performance for selective hydrogenation of acetylene was investigated. The structure and surface defects of the catalyst can be changed by altering the amount of Zr incorporation. Compared to both Au/CeO2 and Au/ZrO2, the synthesized Au/Ce1−xZrxO2 showed the higher catalytic activity with keeping almost 100% ethylene selectivity at 300 °C. The TEM observation indicated that the incorporation of Zr led to the formation of hollow spherical solid solutions. The specific surface area also has a certain influence on the catalytic activity. Considering the catalytic activity of Au/Ce1−xZrxO2 and their characterizations by XPS and Raman, the concentration of Ce4+ and the oxygen vacancy of the Ce1−xZrxO2 support play an important role in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene.

Phase-Transition-Induced Surface Reconstruction of Rh1 Site in Intermetallic Alloy for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:The fine-tuning of the geometric and electronic structures of active sites plays a crucial role in catalysis. However, the intricate entanglement between the two aspects results in a lack of interpretable design for active sites, posing a challenge in developing high-performance catalysts. Here, we find that surface reconstruction induced by phase transition in intermetallic alloys enables synergistic geometric and electronic structure modulation, creating a desired active site microenvironment for propane dehydrogenation. The resulting electron-rich four-coordinate Rh1 site in the RhGe0.5Ga0.5 intermetallic alloy can accelerate the desorption of propylene and suppress the side reaction and thus exhibits a propylene selectivity of ∼98% with a low deactivation constant of 0.002 h-1 under propane dehydrogenation at 550 °C. Furthermore, we design a computational workflow to validate the rationality of the microenvironment modulation induced by the phase transition in an intermetallic alloy.

Abstract:Abstract Metal/oxide interface is of fundamental significance to heterogeneous catalysis because the seemingly “inert” oxide support can modulate the morphology, atomic and electronic structures of the metal catalyst through the interface. The interfacial effects are well studied over a bulk oxide support but remain elusive for nanometer-sized systems like clusters, arising from the challenges associated with chemical synthesis and structural elucidation of such hybrid clusters. We hereby demonstrate the essential catalytic roles of a nanometer metal/oxide interface constructed by a hybrid Pd/Bi 2 O 3 cluster ensemble, which is fabricated by a facile stepwise photochemical method. The Pd/Bi 2 O 3 cluster, of which the hybrid structure is elucidated by combined electron microscopy and microanalysis, features a small Pd-Pd coordination number and more importantly a Pd-Bi spatial correlation ascribed to the heterografting between Pd and Bi terminated Bi 2 O 3 clusters. The intra-cluster electron transfer towards Pd across the as-formed nanometer metal/oxide interface significantly weakens the ethylene adsorption without compromising the hydrogen activation. As a result, a 91% selectivity of ethylene and 90% conversion of acetylene can be achieved in a front-end hydrogenation process with a temperature as low as 44 °C.

Abstract:A catalyst with high selectivity for acetylene selective hydrogenation is highly desirable, yet ideal selectivity often comes at the price of activity loss. Here, a carbon confined Cu15Pd catalyst (Cu15Pd@C) was fabricated through an eco-friendly and efficient approach, which improves ethylene selectivity while at the same time, maintains high activity. Under optimized conditions, acetylene conversion of 100% and ethylene selectivity of 91% were simultaneously achieved. Comprehensive characterization and DFT reveal that the carbon layer not only promotes the formation of smaller nanoparticles, but effectively inhibits the production of green oil, which is associated to the confined spatial microenvironment by the carbon layer, posing steric hindrance to chain growth from acetylene coupling. A series of carbon confined Cu and Ag-based bimetal catalysts were fabricated through the same method, proving the facilitation of carbon layer on such selective hydrogenation universal, and also showed great potential of our method and catalysts in practical application.

Abstract:A strategy to fabricate a stable and site-isolated Ni catalyst is reported. Specifically, Mo3S4 clusters allowed individual Ni atoms to bond with Mo and S to create a type of active site. A site-isolated Ni1MoS/Al2O3 sample exhibited high performance in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. Concretely, 90% ethylene selectivity was achievable at full acetylene conversion under relatively mild reaction conditions without any obvious decay in performance observed during longer testing periods. In contrast, a reference catalyst with Ni ensembles exhibited poor selectivity and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that H2 molecules were activated by a heterolytic route over Ni1MoS/Al2O3, which enhanced the reaction rate. Improved selectivity originated from the unique isolated Niδ+ structure induced by Mo and S, which facilitated product desorption as opposed to overhydrogenation or oligomerization. Homogeneous Ni Single-Atom Sites in the NiZn Intermetallic Nanostructure for Efficient Semihydrogenation of Acetylene

Abstract:Catalytic semihydrogenation of acetylene is crucial for ethylene purification but still faces a grand challenge in circumventing deep hydrogenation and oligomerization so far, especially for the cost-effective catalysts. Herein, two Ni-based intermetallic nanocatalysts with different atomic arrangements were subtly constructed via controlling the reduction temperature of ZnO-supported NiO particles. The one reduced at 400 °C is L12-type intermetallic Ni3Zn with separated Ni3 trimers (denoted as Ni/ZnO-R400 or Ni3Zn/ZnO); another reduced at 600 °C is L10-type intermetallic NiZn with the homogeneous Ni single atoms completely isolated by Zn atoms (denoted as Ni/ZnO-R600 or NiZn/ZnO). The systematical evaluations validate NiZn/ZnO as an outstanding noble metal-free catalyst for acetylene semihydrogenation, showing a significantly enhanced selectivity toward ethylene relative to Ni3Zn/ZnO (87.5 vs −275.4% at 200 °C) through suppressing not only the unselective hydrogenation to ethane but also carbon deposition. According to catalytic evaluations with or without ethylene, microcalorimetry, and density functional theory calculations, the superior selectivity of NiZn/ZnO stems from the noncompetitive adsorption between the moderately σ-bonded acetylene over two neighboring Ni single atoms and weakly π-bonded ethylene on Ni single-atom sites due to its unique Ni–Zn–Ni ensemble.

Preparation of an Unsupported Copper-Based Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene from Cu 2 O Nanocubes

Abstract:Designing cheap, earth-abundant, and nontoxic metal catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation is of pivotal importance, but challenging. Here, a nonprecious metal catalyst for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene was prepared from Cu2O nanocubes. The preparation includes two steps: (1) thermal treatment in acetylene-containing gas at 160 °C and (2) hydrogen reduction at 180 °C. The resultant catalyst showed outstanding performance at low temperature (80–100 °C) and 0.1–0.5 MPa pressure, completely converting acetylene with a low selectivity to undesired ethane (<20%). The characterization results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated that the formation of an interstitial copper carbide (CuxC) might give rise to significantly enhanced hydrogenation activity. Preliminary density functional theory calculation demonstrated that the lattice spacing of Cu3C was nearly identical to that of the new CuxC crystallite measured in HRTEM and determined by XRD. The calculated dissociation energy of hydrogen on Cu3C(0001) was considerably lower than that on Cu(111), suggesting superior hydrogenation activity of Cu3C(0001). It is experimentally verified that copper(I) acetylide (Cu2C2) might be the precursor of CuxC.
