Abstract:In this report, Y-doped acoustic superlattice (ASL) lithium niobate (LN) crystal with linear taper of period was grown by the Czochralski method. The ferroelectric domain structure was revealed by optical photomicrograph. When an alternating electric field of frequency ranging from 680 MHz to 1100 MHz was applied, a ultrasonic wave with the same frequency was excited implying that a high-frequency bulk wave device with broad bandwidth could be fabricated.

Abstract:Acoustic focusing has wide applications in many domains including non-destructive evaluation, medical diagnosis and particle manipulation. In the past decades, due to their outstanding ca-pacity of wave manipulation, acoustic metasurfaces (AMSs) based on various structures, such as coiling-up space structures, Helmholtz-resonator-like structures and membrane-type structures, have been proposed to achieve different functionalities including acoustic focusing. However, given their complex geometries and narrow channels, these structures inevitably cause fabrica-tion difficulties and limit energy transmission efficiency due to the thermoviscous loss. To overcome these drawbacks, a double layered acoustic grating (DLAG) is proposed in the paper to focus acoustic waves with high energy transmission efficiency. The DLAG consists of two layers of rigid panels with periodically perforated subwavelength slits on each layer. The surface coupling approach (SCA) which was proposed to predict the sound radiation in multiple connected spaces is employed to predict acoustic field through the DLAG. The widths of the slits and the cavity between the two layers of the DLAG can be optimized to converge the acoustic energy of an incident plane wave into a predefined focusing region, while the slits' spacing and the thickness of the DLAG are set to be a fraction of wavelength. Using a 3D printed DLAG with the optimized geometrical size, the acoustic focusing was validated experimentally, which show very good agreements with the prediction from the SCA.

Abstract:In this letter theoretical calculations and experimental results of ultrasonic generation and detection up to 800 MHz using an acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals are reported. The experiment is in good agreement with theory. Transducers with an insertion loss of nearly 0 dB at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been made.

Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:An acoustic superlattice LiNbO3 crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was fabricated by introducing a periodic electric current through the solid–liquid interface during the crystal growing process. The domain morphology of an as-grown crystal was observed with a scanning electron microscope, and was found to be of good periodicity. A light diffraction experiment indicated that there was a periodic fluctuation of the dielectric constant along the crystal’s growing direction. Using the “crossed field” scheme, a 340 MHz ultrasonic was excited in the crystal, which means that the acoustic superlattice is suitable for constructing high-frequency bulk-wave acoustic devices.
Acoustic Attenuation and Optical-Absorption Effects on Light Scattering by Acoustic Phonons in Superlattices.

Abstract:The effects of acoustical attenuation and optical absorption on light scattering by acoustic phonons propagating along the superlattice axis are theoretically analyzed and experimentally probed in GaAs/AlAs and Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattices. It is shown that the linewidth of the acoustic modes undergoes a clear narrowing near the Brillouin-zone edge due to the decrease of the group velocity of the phonons. It is also demonstrated that the damping of the acoustic waves makes the high-frequency modes at the Brillouin-zone edge shift into the ``forbidden gaps'' which have been evidenced in the case of lossless media. We have observed such a shift in a Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattice sample at phonon energies around 14 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for which the acoustic attenuation can no longer be neglected. It is also shown that the effects of optical absorption on the relative intensity of the folded acoustic modes are particularly sensitive in the condition where the incident light is Bragg reflected by the interfaces. This intensity behavior has been observed in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice and agrees with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The excitation and propagation of high frequency ultrasonic waves by the micron superlattices is cited as an example, the experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions. LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals with periodic laminar domains with periods about several microns and several ten microns have been fabricated by Czochralski method of crystal growth with doped melts. These may be considered as the micron superlattices for optic and acoustic wave processes involving 3rd. rank tensor coefficients which change sign across the domain walls.

Abstract:This study investigates into the sound transmission through a periodic acoustic metamaterial grating of finite size. The single-layer grating is constructed by periodically arranging sub-wavelength unit cells in a slab, as a part of a large baffle between two acoustic domains. The metamaterial unit cell consists of an open duct decorated with coiled resonators, which intends to suppress sound transmission using its acoustic stop-band. The space-coiling structure allows the metamaterial to operate at low frequency with a compact size. Analytical approach to predict the sound transmission loss (STL) of the combined baffle is developed, which is employed to study its sound attenuation under normal and oblique incidence. Results show that the unit cell geometry, the periodicity of grating elements, and the angle of incidence significantly affect the STL. The STL behavior of the acoustic grating is mainly governed by three physical effects, including the acoustic stop-band, the edge diffraction, and the destructive radiation interference behind the acoustic grating. Detailed mechanism studies for these effects are discussed using numerical examples. Experiment is conducted to validate the proposed numerical approach. This paper presents a theoretical framework to predict and study the performance of acoustic gratings comprised of metamaterial unit cells, which can be further extended to study phase tailoring acoustic metasurface.

Abstract:The bulk acoustic wave delay lines are demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally based on the acoustic superlattices. In one bulk acoustic wave delay line, two collinear acoustic superlattices are separately located, where the generation and detection of the bulk acoustic waves are executed, respectively. A basic bulk acoustic wave delay line working at 819 MHz with the delay time of 2.46 mu s was realized. Furthermore, by employing two enantiomorphous aperiodic acoustic superlattices, a broadband dispersive bulk acoustic wave delay line with the center frequency at 295 MHz has also been fabricated and investigated. Abstract:It is shown that superlattice structures undergo strong optical resonances near Bragg incidence, characterized by high energy density gains between the boundaries of the superlattice. These resonances actually correspond to antiresonances of the reflectivity R. The variations of R with the incident wavelength have been investigated with a Ti: sapphire tunable laser source and a good agreement between theory and experiment has been found. Besides, one can take advantage of this resonance to increase the backscattering of light by ultrasonic waves in superlattices, which occurs owing to the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector.

Abstract:A special superlattice structure in which the thickness of each period increases gradually with small amount is designed. The Raman spectra of acoustic phonons for this structure are calculated numerically using the transfer matrix method. The measured Raman spectrum from a SiGe/Si sample demonstrates the features predicted by the calculation: a strong peak from the localized mode within the first gap, an increase in the line width of the folded peak with the phonon branch index, and an asymmetric lineshape with a tail toward high frequency. A schematic picture is given to help in understanding the observed results. Raman spectra with layer thickness fluctuating randomly are also calculated. The main features are similar to those observed in the superlattices with the thickness varying gradually. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of asymmetry of boundary conditions on the acoustic properties of an acoustic superlattice transducer is studied theoretically. The resonance frequency is influenced by the thickness unequality of the positive and negative domains. This may be used to tailor the property of the ASL transducer.

Abstract:Using an acoustic supedattice LiNbO3 crystal, we fabricated a prototype of acoustooptic device. Under the normal incidence, both the positive and negative first diffraction order appear. When the incidence angle equals the Bragg angle, only one of the first diffraction order remains. This can be explained by the interaction length.

Abstract:Optical superlattice LiNbO3 crystals with a modulation period number over 200 and a modulation period from 2.0 to over 15.0 μm were grown by the Czochralski method in a carefully designed asymmetric temperature field system. Measurements of the frequency doubling efficiency for generating light from blue to green were performed. The largest efficiency obtained was 24.0% for frequency doubling of a picosecond 980 nm fundamental light. The angle tuning tolerance of a LiNbO3 optical superlattice was measured to be over 10° of the incidence angle.

Abstract:We study the scattering of light by longitudinal-acoustic phonons propagating along the axis of an infinite superlattice. In contrast to previous works, we take into account not only the difference between the acoustic and photoelastic parameters of the two media, but also the difference between their refractive indexes. In this case the incident and scattered light in the superlattice are represented by Bloch waves instead of plane waves. The scattering intensities, calculated in closed form by using a transfer-matrix method, are then valid for any value of the scattering wave vector q and not limited to q values small compared with the size of the Brillouin zone, \ensuremath{\pi}/D. The peak intensities are discussed for GaAs-AlAs superlattices as functions of the composition, period, and photoelastic parameters. The results may show noticeable differences with those of the previous works, especially for q near the boundaries of the successive Brillouin zones.
