Abstract:Based on microscopic phase field theory, the interatomic potentials of Ni3Al (L1(2) structure) and Ni3Mo (DO22 structure) was calculated employing the inversion calculation method, and their dependence on temperature and concentration are also studied. The inversion calculation results demonstrate that the first nearest neighbor interatomic potentials (WNi-Al and WNi-Mo) increase linearly with the temperature increasing continuously. WNi-Al increases but WNi-Mo decreases linearly with the continuous increase of Al concentration, and vice versa. Substituting the inversion calculated WNi-Al and WNi-Mo at 973 K into the microscopic phase-field kinetics model, the atomic temporal evolution pictures of phase transformation process are similar to the results obtained by empirical interatomic potentials. In addition, the precipitated gamma' phase has a higher ordered degree, which is more consistent with the actual microstructure evolution of phase transformation process than the calculated results reported in previous studies using empirical interatomic potentials.

Abstract:The structural properties, the enthalpies of formation, and the mechanical properties of some Ni-Al intermetallic compounds (NiAl, Ni3Al, NiAl3, Ni5Al3, Ni3Al4) are studied by using Chen's lattice inversion embedded-atom method (CLI-EAM). Our calculated lattice parameters and cohesive energies of Ni-Al compounds are consistent with the experimental and the other EAM results. The results of enthalpy of formation indicate a strong chemical interaction between Ni and Al in the intermetallic compounds. Through analyzing the alloy elastic constants, we find that all the Ni-Al intermetallic compounds discussed are mechanically stable. The bulk moduli of the compounds increase with the increasing Ni concentration. Our results also suggest that NiAl, Ni3Al, NiAl3, and Ni5Al3 are ductile materials with lower ratios of shear modulus to bulk modulus; while Ni3Al4 is brittle with a higher ratio.

Abstract:The structural evolution, mechanical properties and the oxidation characteristics of Ti50Ni50−xAlx alloys were investigated. The influence of additive Nb on the microstructure, mechanical properties as well as the high temperature oxidation resistance was examined. It is found that the substitution of Al for Ni can remarkably reinforce the TiNi-based intermetallics by precipitation of (Ti,Al)2Ni phase and by solid-solution strengthening effects. It is also found that the addition of Nb has beneficial influence on the mechanical properties of TiNiAl intermetallics, and that the oxidation resistance of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys can be effectively improved by the Nb addition. The effect of Nb on the high temperature oxidation behavior of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys has been discussed.
Theoretical Calculations of the Ideal Strength of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in Tension and Shear

Abstract:We have applied the first-principles method to Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al to calculate tensile deformation in the [100], [110] and [111] directions and shear deformation in the {111}[11 (2) over bar] and {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions. The tensile and shear stress-strain exhibit a very different anisotropy in consideration of crystallographic directions. The ideal tensile strength (ITS) sigma(max )of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the [100] tensile directions is the largest with the values of 35.63, 35.19 and 38.05 GPa, respectively, followed by the [111] and [110] directions, illuminating that NiAl in this direction is the most difficult to occur tensile fracture and it has the best ductility with a strain of 0.60. The ideal shear strength (ISS) tau(max) of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions is 5.94, 4.55 and 11.35 GPa, respectively, which is larger than that of {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions except NiAl. Furthermore, the tau(max )of NiAl along the {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions is 22.15 GPa which is the most difficult to produce cleavage fracture in considered phases and directions. Finally, the evolution of lattice parameters, energy, volume, density of states, Bader charge transfer and difference charge density are investigated to clarify the nature of the bonding and intrinsic yielding mechanism.

Abstract:The stuctural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of B2-NiAl and L12-Ni3Al intermetallic compounds are systemically investigated. Using a first principle pseudopotential plane-wave method, several basic mechanical parameters of B2-NiAl and L12-Ni3Al crystals, such as the equilibrium volume, the bulk modulus, the elastic constants, the Zener anisotropy factor, the Poisson’s ratio, the Young’s modulus and isotropic shear modulus are firstly calculated. And then the temperature dependence of the equilibrium volume, the bulk modulus, the thermal expansion coefficient, the heat capacity, the Debye temperature and the Grüneisen parameter are further evaluated in the framework of a quasi-harmonic Debye model. Finally, a special attention is paied on the mutual influence of pressure and temperature on mechenical and thermodynanic properties of B2-NiAl and L12-Ni3Al intermetallic compounds in the range of 0-20 GPa and 0-1000 K.

Abstract:Elastic constants have been calculated for the FCC metals Cu, Al and Ni using the Mobius transform and a short-range three-body potential correction. Unlike a previous calculation based only on pair potentials, the present result is in good agreement with experiment since the restriction of the Cauchy relation has been removed. More importantly, it shows the potential application of the Mobius-inversion method for evaluating interatomic potentials from ab initio electronic structure calculations.

Abstract:Alternating layers of Ni and Ni–Al were magnetron sputter deposited at room temperature, and then annealed at 1073 K in a high vacuum furnace for an hour to produce Ni/Ni3Al microlaminates with controlled composition, spacing, and volume fraction of the layer. The annealed composite was confirmed to be Ni and Ni3Al by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The film parameters were evaluated by fitting the measured dispersion curve to a theoretical model. For Ni/Ni3Al laminated composites, a density of 7500±100 kg/m3, Young's modulus of 280±10 GPa, and a thickness of 140±5 μm, were found.

Abstract:Nickel-based superalloys are well known for their excellent mechanical properties under high thermal or mechanical extremes. Reliable predictions of deformation behavior becomes paramount in such cases. Since Ni/Ni 3 Al interface is the prime defect in Ni-based superalloy single crystals, this letter investigates the underlying deformation mechanisms in differently oriented Ni-Ni 3 Al interfaces using atomistic simulations. For in-plane loading along the interface, significant tension-compression asymmetry (TCA) is observed in yielding and the responsible deformation mechanisms at the inception of plasticity are illustrated. Additionally, in-plane yield surface is constructed through biaxial loadings of the material. Finally, a generalized flow equation is proposed to capture the observed asymmetric behavior for its potential use in the realm of higher length scales.

Abstract:The tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al were simulated by molecular dynamics. First, the effect of the content of gamma' strengthening phase on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied at room temperature and constant strain rate. The microstructure evolution of Ni/Ni3Al under the content of gamma' strengthening phase with three typical characteristics was especially investigated. Compared with single crystal Ni, it is found that the gamma' strengthening phase can increase the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al. This is because during the plastic deformation process, as the dislocations continue to multiply, the dislocation density gradually increases, resulting in dislocation plugging, which increases the resistance to dislocation movement, thereby increasing the tensile strength. Secondly, the effect of temperature on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied, and it is found that the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al decreases with increasing temperature. This is because as the increasing temperature, the internal kinetic energy of the atom increases, resulting in the more intense thermal motion of the atoms, and the weaker bonding force between the atoms. The atoms leaving the equilibrium position have no time to return to the equilibrium position, and the fcc structures transform into a large number of hcp structures and other atomic arrangements, which cause lattice distortion and reduce tensile strength. Finally, the effect of strain rate on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied. The results show that the tensile strength is not sensitive to low strain rate, but sensitive to high strain rate.

Abstract:We performed a first-principles calculation to investigate the 85 different Ni3Ti/Al2O3 interfaces. The study shows that the formation of metal-oxygen interfaces and high symmetric interfacial stacking sequences is highly favored both by work of adhesion and interfacial energy. At high temperature and O-poor condition, the metal-metal interfaces show higher thermodynamic stability than metal-oxygen interfaces. The first principles tensile test predicts that the main cause of mechanical failure in Ni3Ti/Al2O3 interface is attributed to the breaking of the Ti-Ni bonds proximity to the interface in the bulk Ni3Ti phase.

Abstract:The Ni 43.3 Mn 31.5 Fe 11.7 Al 13.5 ribbon was obtained by melt-spinning method and the microstructure, magnetic and magnetoresistance properties of these ribbons were studied by scanning electron microscope and vibration sample magnetometer. The reverse martensitic transformation from the weak-magnetic martensite phase to the ferromagnetic austenite was confirmed in these ribbons. A moderate negative magnetoresistance in the magnetic field of 30 kOe was obtained around the martensitic transformation, which would mainly owing to the field-induced reverse martensitic transformation. Taking into account of various properties, the present Ni–Fe–Mn–Al ribbons provide an impetus for further research.

Abstract:This work brings out many interesting facets of magnetism in the Ni5Al3/NiO core/shell nanoparticle system. Theweakandstrongmagnetic irreversibility lines (TWI(H)andTSI(H)) reproduce the previously reportedH - Tphase diagram at fieldsH⩽30 Oe, but strong departures occur forH > 30 Oe. Comparison with the theoretically predictedH - Tphase diagram allows us to identifyTWIwithTCG+SG, where the paramagnetic (PM)-chiral glass (CG) and PM-spin glass (SG) phase transitions occursimultaneously, andTSIwithTSG, the temperature at which transition to the replica symmetry breakingSGstate takes place. TheTSI(H)transition line abruptly ends at the point (H≃30 Oe,T≃90K). AsHexceeds 30 Oe, a new transition appears which gets completely suppressed at fieldsH>1 kOewhere the magnetic irreversibility ceases to exist. Nointrinsiclong-range ferromagnetic ordering exists but fields as low as 3 kOe suffice to induce long-range ferromagnetic order. At fixed temperatures, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy fluctuations essentially govern the 'approach-to-saturation' in magnetization for fields in the range 3 - 70 kOe. The present nanocrystalline system behaves as an isotropic system with random easy axis in which the magnetization reversal occurs through the coherent rotation of the magnetizations of weakly-interacting single-domain Ni5Al3particles. Saturation magnetization, likeM(T) atH⩾2 kOe, exhibits an anomalous upturn at temperatures below ≈ 30 K. This upturn is associated with the anomalous softening of spin-wave modes which results in the thermal excitation of a large number of non-equilibrium (finite lifetime) magnons. At sub-Kelvin temperatures, these magnons undergo Bose-Einstein condensation.

Abstract:In order to explore the novel Ni-Mn-Ti-based all- d -metal Heusler alloy, the martensitic transformation, mechanical and magnetic properties of the Ni 2- x Cu x Mn 1.5 Ti 0.5 ( x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, and 0.5) alloys and (Ni 2- x Cu x Mn 1.5 Ti 0.5 ) 0.97 B 0.03 ( x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.375) alloys were systematically investigated by the first-principles calculations. The austenite and non-modulated martensite always present an antiferromagnetic state in the investigated series. The phase stability of the austenite and martensite decreases with the increasing Cu content. Cu and B co-doping can decrease the thermal hysteresis of the Ni-Mn-Ti alloy. Doping B impedes the martensitic transformation of the Ni-Cu-Mn-Ti alloy and reduces the anisotropy of Ni-(Cu)-Mn-Ti alloy. The elastic constants of the Ni-Cu-Mn-Ti-(B) alloy were calculated, which reveals that the Ni-Cu-Mn-Ti alloy possesses great ductility and Ni-Cu-Mn-Ti-B alloy has great incompressibility, shear resistance, and normal stress resistance. The root of the martensitic transformation, mechanical and magnetic properties was discovered according to the electronic density of states.

Mechanical properties and strengthening mechanism of Ni/Al nanolaminates: role of dislocation strengthening and constraint in soft layers

Abstract:This work focuses on the mechanical properties and strengthening mechanism of Ni/Al nanolaminates, where dislocation strengthening and constraint dominate in the soft Al nanolayers. Nanoindentation and micropillar compression experiments highlight a constrained plasticity of Al nanolayers, which endows Ni/Al nanolaminates with a strain hardened behavior. Plasticity of Ni/Al nanolaminate begins with yielding of Al, and the Al yield strength depends on the individual layer thickness. Based on an inverse methodology, the Al yield strength as a function of Al grain size is determined. The results evidence a significant strengthening in the Al nanolayers. Specially, when Al layer thickness decreases from ≈110 nm to ≈16 nm, its yield strength is increased for ≈68%, from ≈0.69 GPa to ≈1.16 GPa. The strengthening rule follows a confined layer slip model that is developed based on confining of single dislocation loops in nanolayers. Both the dislocation strengthening and the constraint effects in the Al layers contribute to a more sensitivity of Ni/Al strength with the variation of Al layer thickness, instead of Ni layer thickness. The work may forward the fundamental understanding in the strengthening mechanism and mechanical behavior of metallic nanolaminates with large elastoplastic mismatch.

Construction of an N -Body Potential and Molecular-Dynamics Study of Interfacial Reaction in the Ni/Mo Bilayer

Abstract:An n-body potential is constructed for the Ni-Mo system based on the Finnis-Sinclair formalism. The potential with optimized parameters is able to reproduce some physical properties of several Ni-Mo equilibrium and metastable alloy phases. Molecular-dynamics simulation with the constructed potential is performed to study the detailed process of interfacial reaction in a Ni/Mo bilayer upon annealing at medium temperatures of 300 to 600 °C and reveals that amorphization is driven by mutual atomic diffusion and follows exactly a t1/2 law.
Pair Potential Approach for Metal/al2o3interface

Abstract:The atomistic simulation of a metal/oxide interface is a challenge in surface science and technology. It requires a systematic way of obtaining the interatomic potentials across the interface. In this work, we use a Chen–Möbius inversion method to study the Ni/Al2O3 interface, and get a concise and general inversion formula, which is used to extract pair potentials from ab initio adhesive energies. A series of checks show that the inversed potentials are self-consistent and also partially transferable. These potentials prefer to treat the Al terminated interface, but are not so good for the O terminated interface. In summary, the present work provides a novel way to get the ab initio based pair potentials across an interface, with the derivation of an inversion formula of both theoretical and practical importance.
Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Ni/Al reactive nanolaminates with different NixAly intermetallic phases

Abstract:Nanolaminates made up by alternative Ni and Al nanolayers are widely applied to solder structural materials, due to abundant heat releases when supplied with an energetic input. This work studies the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Ni/Al nanolaminates with a wide mole ratio of Ni (MNi, 0.18–0.53), to ascertain the role of NixAly intermetallic phases during heat-treatment. To this end, 3 nanolaminates with Al thickness fixed at ≈110 nm and Ni thickness varying 15–75 nm are fabricated and are heat-treated at 400 °C, to trigger formations of NiAl3, Ni2Al3 and NiAl intermetallic phases. The results suggest an enhanced strength of Ni/Al after heat-treatment. However, their evolution with MNi is complex. The nanolaminate with MNi ≈0.18 is the softest after heat-treatment, due to the dominant plasticity of residual Al phases. The maximized strength is achieved when MNi ≈0.40, in which a novel NiAl3/Ni2Al3 nanolaminate structure is formed. Owing to the brittleness of both phases, the nanolaminate after heat-treatment is fractured by shearing upon uniaxial compression. The best strength-ductility synergy is achieved when Ni mole ratio ≈0.53. In the heat-treated nanolaminate a homogenous nanocrystalline NiAl phase is formed. As a result, the nanolaminate exhibits excellent ductility and intermediate strength among the 3 nanolaminates.

Abstract:When doped with transition-metal (TM) elements, modern commercial Ni-based superalloys achieve an extraordinary mechanical performance, including elastic behaviors and shear strength. By using density functional theory, the TM-element (3d:Sc–Zn, 4d:Y–Cd, 5d:Hf–Au) dependence of the elastic properties and the ideal shear strength of γ′-Ni3Al were determined. According to the positive definiteness requirement of the elastic stiffness coefficients matrix, we present the necessary and sufficient mechanical stability in terms of Born criteria for a monoclinic crystal system. By examining the mechanical stability and calculating the stress–strain curve at every single strain, the shear behavior of pure Ni3Al in the weakest shear-slip system was investigated in detail. Our results show that the d-orbital occupancy of TM elements can affect the mechanical properties of the γ′ phase significantly when they occupy the Al site in Ni3Al, where the elements toward the center part of each series (e.g. V, Cr, Mn, Nb, Mo, Ru, Ta, W, Re, and Os) can enhance the elastic constants, elastic moduli, and shear strength. Elements at the beginnings and ends of the series (such as Cu, Zn, Y, Ag, Cd, and Au) will decrease the elastic properties and shear strength of γ′-Ni3Al.

Abstract:In this study, the Ni/Ni 3 Al-based alloys were proposed, and their microstructures were established. Uniaxial tension was performed based on the γ′ phase precipitates of alloys with different shape ratio by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We demonstrate that the crystal distortion induced by the transition from FCC to disordered structure can lead to the reduction of tensile strength. Besides, the structure, temperature, and strain rate effects on the mechanical properties were clarified, and the microscale mechanism was revealed. The results indicated that compared with Ni/Ni 3 Al structure with a γ′ phase precipitate shape ratio of 1:1:1, the tensile strength of the structure with a shape ratio of 1:2:1 is smaller, and the mechanical property–strengthening effect is significantly determined by the structures of the γ′ phase precipitates; besides, there is a clear secondary strengthening in the tensile process of Ni/Ni 3 Al structure with a γ′ phase precipitate shape ratio of 2:1:2 due to the formation of disordered structures. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of the models with different γ′ phase precipitates shape ratios all decrease with the increase of temperature, under the conditions of low strain rate; the tensile strength of the alloys decreases with the decrease of strain rate.

Abstract:Besides cube-on-cube orientation relationship, a new kind of orientation relationship between NiAl and G-phase Ni16Hf6Si7 was observed, i.e. [111]NiAl∥[552]G and (11̄0)NiAl∥(22̄0)G, which showed a good agreement with the prediction from a recently proposed geometric method. The interfaces between NiAl and G-phase in both cases were also studied.
