Abstract:Tensile fracture of an Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy 8090 was studied. The results showed that the tensile fracture of the alloy contains dimples and intergranular rupture as well as cleavage facets , and the cleavage facets are formed by the interaction of inclusions and Na element.

Abstract:The addition of lithium to aluminium alloys has the potential for providing a class of high strength alloys with exceptional properties suitable for aerospace applications. One such candidate is 8090, a precipitation hardenable Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy. Detailed optical microscopical observations were used to analyse the intrinsic microstructural features of the alloy. It is shown that microstructural characteristics have a pronounced influence on tensile properties and fracture behaviour of the alloy in the peak-aged, maximum strength condition. Tensile test results indicate that the alloy has property combinations comparable with other high strength commercial aluminium alloys. The elongation and reduction in area are higher in the transverse direction of the extruded plate. A change in fracture mode was observed with direction of testing. We rationalize such behaviour based on the grain structure of the material, and the nature, distribution and morphology of the second-phase particles. An attempt is made to discuss the kinetics of the fracture process in terms of several competing mechanistic effects involving intrinsic microstructural features, deformation characteristics of the matrix, brittleness of the grain boundary precipitates and grain boundary failure. The role of stress on particle fracture is highlighted.

Abstract:Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels obtained much attention because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, the fracture behavior of the steels remains unclear. In this study, Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels were ex situ tensile strained and tested by a transmission electron microscope to investigate the relationship between crack and twins. The propagation of crack was examined and related to the dislocation slip and twinning. Cracks initiate related to the moving of dislocations and propagate along the slip bands. Twins parallel and inclined to the crack are produced during crack propagating. The inclined twins notably block and blunt the crack, whereas the parallel twins exhibit an insignificant effect.
Study of Tensile Fracture Mechanisms of Bi-Morphic Alloys Γ-Tial at Room Temperature

Abstract:By means of in-situ tensile test of the specimen of bi-morphic alloys of γ-TiAl,observation upon its corresponding fracture surface with scanning electron microscope, and finite element computation, the tensile fracture mechanism of these alloys is investigated. The results reveal that most cracks are initiated and propagated along the interfaces between lamellae before the starting of plastic deformation. The driving force of fracture process is the tensile stress. In specimens with a slit notch, most cracks are initiated directly from the notch root and extend along lamellar interfaces. The main crack and a new one are then linked by the translamellar cleavage fracture over the barrier grain when the applied load increases. In V-notch specimens, however, a crack may be initiated at a distance in front of the notch root. The FEM calculations reveal that the fracture strength along lamellar interfaces (interlamellar fracture) is as low as 110 MPa and appreciably lower than that along the interfaces perpendicular to the lamellae (translamellar fracture), which shows a value higher than 250 MPa. This explains the reason why cracks nucleate and extend preferably along the lamellar interfaces.

Abstract:The tensile properties and fracture mechanisms of fully lamellar TiAl based alloy was studied by room and high temperature (400 degrees C) tensile test. The results indicated that: the crack initiated between weak lamellar interfaces. With tension increased, the cracks extended along lamellar direction. Crack propagation resistance was enhanced at colony boundary. Ligaments broke while load increased, and then the main crack and microcrack linked. The fracture process was that the main crack occurred firstly, microcrack appeared and then propagated, the main crack and microcrack were linked, and the alloy fractured finally; The ductility of the alloy at 400 degrees C was superior to that at room temperature; The fracture mechanism of the fully lamellar TiAl based alloy is brittle cleavage fracture.

Abstract:High-temperature tensile tests were developed to explore the flow features of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. The fracture characteristics and microstructural evolution mechanisms were thoroughly revealed. The results demonstrated that both intergranular fractures and ductile fractures occurred, which affected the hot tensile fracture mechanism. During high-temperature tensile, the second phase (Al2CuMg) at the grain boundaries (GBs) promoted the formation and accumulation of dimples. With the continual progression of high-temperature tensile, the aggregation/coarsening of dimples along GBs appear, aggravating the intergranular fracture. The coalescence and coarsen of dimples are reinforced at higher tensile temperatures or lower strain rates. Considering the impact of microstructural evolution and dimple formation/coarsening on tensile stresses, a physical mechanism constitutive (PMC) equation is herein proposed. According to the validation and analysis, the predictive results were in preferable accordance with the testing data, showing the outstanding reconfiguration capability of the PMC model for high-temperature tensile features in Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys.

Abstract:The 8 mm-thick 2195 Al-Li alloy joints were achieved by Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The microstructural evolution, temperature-dependent mechanical properties, and fracture properties were studied. The T1, δ′/β′ and θ′ precipitates were observed in the Base Metal (BM) and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). Most of the precipitates, except for re-precipitated δ′/β′ phases, were dissolved in the Nugget Zone (NZ). The tensile specimens that failed at cryogenic temperatures (–196 °C) had the maximum Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), and the fracture surface showed the inter-granular fracture characteristics. Compared to those at room temperature (25 °C), the decreasing tensile properties at high temperature (180 °C) were related to microstructure and strain hardening effects. The NZ presented the optimal fracture toughness, and the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) was mutually dominated by microhardness and grain size. Analysis on Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG) rates indicates that the Thermal-Mechanically Affected Zone (TMAZ) exhibited the most superior fatigue resistance performance at stress intensity range below 17 MPa·m1/2 due to compressive residual stress and the crack closure effect. The fatigue fracture surfaces reveal that the crack propagation zone was characterized by the striations and secondary cracks. Also, inter-granular fracture behavior was responsible for the fastest FCG rates in the NZ.

Abstract:Fracture behaviour of a two phase TiAl alloy was investigated based on observations of fracture surfaces of three point bending (3PB) precracked specimens and detailed observations of configuration changes at precrack tips, based on which new findings are presented. The higher toughness of coarse, near fully lamellar microstructure as compared to that of finer duplex microstructure is attributed to the path of crack propagation. In coarser NFL microstructure, the crack should cross more large grains with unfavourable orientation or bypass them by much more tortuous path, which causes a much rougher fracture surface than that observed in the finer duplex microstructure. The inverse relationships, showing a low tensile ductility but a higher fracture toughness of the coarser NFL microstructure, are explained by the difference in sampling volume between tensile testing and toughness testing. In the precracked 3PB specimens, the sampling volume is restricted to the vicinity along the precrack direction. The coarser NFL microstructure shows the higher toughness. However, in tensile tests, where a much higher sampling volume includes the entire region within the gauge, the cleavage fracture of the coarser NFL microstructure is able to take the weakest route via the high number of interlamellar cracks. The toughening mechanisms, which make the main crack difficult to propagate or cause it to be stopped, are attributed to reducing the tensile stress perpendicular to the interface between lamellae.

Abstract:The prospect of joining titanium and aluminum components into structures is desirable for a wide range of aerospace and automobile industry applications. One of the problems related with the joining processes for dissimilar metals such as Ti and Al is the formation of residual stress in the bonded joint, which has significant effect on the joint mechanical properties. In this work, joining of a titanium alloy to an aluminum alloy by ultrasonic assisted brazing using a Zn-Al filler metal was investigated. The microstructures of the titanium/aluminum brazed joints were determined by OM, SEM and TEM. The local tensile deformation characteristics of the brazed joints were also examined using the digital image correlation (DIC) methodology by mapping the local strain distribution during in situ tensile tests. The results showed that the Ti7Al5Si12 phase and the TiAl3 phase were formed at the titanium/brazing seam interface. The brazing seam was primarily composed of a Zn-rich phase and a Zn-24.14% Al (mass fraction) eutectoid structure. At the aluminum/brazing seam interface, no interfacial reaction layer was observed and the primary phase Zn-Al dendrites nucleated at the aluminum base metal and grew into the inside of the bonding region. A diffusion layer was formed in the aluminum base metal. It was found that the tensile deformation of the brazed joints was highly heterogeneous, which led to the deflection of the crack during propagating in the joint. The fracture initiated at the Zn-rich phases, where contained the highest stress concentration due to their low elastic modulus, and propagated in the Zn-rich phases or through the interface between Zn-rich phase and Zn-Al eu-tectoid structure.

Abstract:Under tensile and shear loading conditions, 2024 aluminum alloy exhibits two types of distinctive ductile rupture mechanisms. The growth and internal necking of voids governs the rupture mechanism in tension dominated loading mode, while the internal shearing in the ligaments between voids dominants for shear conditions. To investigate the influence of stress states on the material ductility of 2024?T3 aluminum alloy, tensile experiments of a smooth round bar and three notched round bars with different notch root radii as well as a pure torsion experiment were performed. Based on the modification of Gurson model by Nahshon and Hutchinson, a void?based meso?damage constitutive relationship which can deal with both tensile and shear problems was developed and implemented in commercial software ABAQUS. The tensile and shear fracture behaviors of 2024?T3 aluminum alloy including the load?displacement response and crack propagation path were analyzed using the proposed approach and compared with experi?mental data. It is shown that the proposed approach can be used to predict the failure of ductile materials under complex loading conditions.

Abstract:The fracture behavior of a spray deposited AlSiFe alloy during tensile deformation has been studied. The results showed that the microcracks initiated both inside Si phases and al: the boundaries of Si phases with the matrix during the tension. Some microcracks inside Si phases existed before tensile deformation, while the others generated due to the brittle fracture of Si phase during tension deformation. Microcracks at the boundaries of Si phase with matrix were caused by microporosity and bad mechanical connecting between them. The failure of the materials occurred through joining of these microcracks.

Abstract:Ti3Al+Si+Nb alloys containing Ti5Si3 have the potential in ductility improvements. In this paper, the fracture mechanism of this alloy is under investigation. Three kinds of alloys in the as-rolled condition were prepared for determination of KIC values and calculation of J-resistance curves. The results show that the morphology of Ti5Si3 has a great influence on the KIC values of the alloys and crack growth resistance. The fracture mechanism is controlled by Ti5Si3 particles.

Abstract:The orientation dependence of long fatigue crack propagation was investigated for an aluminum–lithium (Al–Li) alloy (1420) at a stress ratio of 0.1. The methods used were three-point bending, compact tension and in situ pulsating fatigue in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber. The in situ fatigue observations were emphasized on crack path morphology during fatigue. The extrinsic toughening was analyzed for different plane orientations based on the fracture mechanics. It was indicated that, Al–Li alloy 1420, a multi-layer microstructure, can be regarded as an in situ laminated composite. The interface of the laminate plays a significant role on the fatigue crack growth. The crack path was governed by the weak interface of the laminated structure with the increase of the closure force. The crack propagation arresting is observed at the range of ΔK 3∼4 and 6∼9 MPa m1/2 for the L-T and T-S orientations, respectively. The delamination toughening and arresting toughening are the predominant extrinsic toughening mechanisms for the L-T and T-S orientations.

Abstract:Al-Li alloys has the advantages of low density and high modulus,but its tenacity is bad. The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr allogy was studied. The fracture toughness of the alloy was measured by means of the quasi-static and dynamic three-point bending testing, respectively. The results show that the dynamic fracture toughness of the alloy is superior to the quasi-static fracture toughness of it. The microscopic observations of the fractured surface show that the dynamic fractured surface has a great deal of long and deep delaminations. The further analysis by means of TEMand SEM shows that the delamination and split -up of the alloy are the main cause of the fracture toughness increasing.

Abstract:Friction stir welded 5 mm thick, Al-Li alloy rolled sheet, metallurgical, hardness and tensile strength measurements were performed. The results demonstrate that there exist three distinct zones in the FSW joint: the weld nugget zone (WNZ), and the thermal-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), and the heat-affected zone (HAZ). The microstructures in WNZ take on scale shape. Under the thermal cycle, the microstructures in HAZ occur recovery and generate the bar-shape recovery structure. The microstructures in TMAZ consist of the equiaxed grains, and the grain size of the microstructures at the retreating side is bigger than that at the advancing side. The tensile test results confirm that the highest tensile strength of Al-Li FSW joints welded with a cylinder-shape and non-thread pin is 296MPa(under the welding speed υ =40mm/min), and the highest elongation percentage is 8.6%( under the welding speed υ =80mm/min).The hardness measurements show that the weld is softened, and the softened scope of both the advancing and the retreating sides are almost the same. But the soften degree of the material at the retreating side is higher than that at the retreating side.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a typical automotive piston material to characterize its fractographic appearance after tensile rupture. The fracture of this heavily alloyed Al—Si alloy takes place in a brittle manner.The consecutive eutectic zone is found to break by debonding of Si platelets from the Al matrix or by fracturing of Si platelets.The various intermetallic particles break up complicatedly under the stress field of the propagating crack.The fracture tends to pass through or approach to the boundary between the eutectic Al matrix and Si platelets and there is a strong interaction between the propagating crack and the obstructing intermetallic compound.A tensile fracture mechanism in the heavily alloyed Al-Si alloy is elucidated.

Abstract:The influence of complex Cr, Yb and Zr alloying on the microstructures and fracture characteristics of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy has been investigated and the mechanism of toughening by adding Cr, Yb and Zr was analyzed. The results show that the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing Cr, Yb and Zr may form the spherical dispersoids containing the Cr, Yb and Zr homogeneously distributed in the Al matrix, which can strongly pin the dislocation and subgrain boundaries, retain the deformation-recovery Al matrix with low angle boundary in the alloy and inhibit the recrystallization of Al matrix. By complex Cr, Yb and Zr alloying to Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy tempered as T6, the fractographs consist of dimple-type transgranular cracking with minor intergranular cracking. Compared with the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy, the intergranular fracture resistance increases obviously, the precipitates free zone is wider with discontinuous distribution on the grain boundaries for the precipitates.

Abstract:TiAl alloys were produced by investment casting method combined with induction skull melting (ISM) technique. In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to study the fracture characteristics and crack propagation of a notched investment cast TiAl specimens in tension under incremental loading conditions. The whole process of crack initiation, propagation and failure during tensile deformation was observed and characterized. The results show that the fracture mechanism was sensitive to not only the microcracks near the notched area but also lamellar orientation to loading axis. The high tensile stress leads to the new microcracks nucleate along lamellar interfaces of grains with favorable orientation when local stress intensity reaches the toughness threshold of the material. Thus, both plasticity and high tensile stress are required to cause notched TiAl failure.
An Investigation on Dynamic Tensile Properties of TiAl Intermetallic Alloy

Abstract:Room-temperature tensile properties of polycrystalline Ti–;47Al-2Mn–;2Nb alloy with nearly lamellar (NL) microstructures were investigated at the strain rates between 10 -;5 and 1000 s -1 using a self-designed Split-Hopkinson tensile bar setup with a rotating disk and conventional testing machine. It was found that tensile ductility varies within a narrow range with the strain rate while dynamic strengths (σ d ) of the alloy are obviously higher than static strengths (σ s ). There exists a linear relationship between σ s and the logarithm of the strain rate (lnε̇), and between σ d and the strain rate itself (ε̇). Fractography analysis indicated that the alloy fractured in a mixed mode of predominant transgranular cleavage and minor intergranular cracking under static and dynamic strain rates. Environmental effect was excluded from the main cause for the room-temperature brittleness of the investigated alloy.
Study on Notch Fracture of TiAl Alloys at Room Temperature

Abstract:In-situ observations of fracture processes combined with one-to-one observations of fracture surfaces and finite-element method (FEM) calculations are carried out on notched tensile specimens of two-phase polycrystalline TiAl alloys. The results reveal that most cracks are initiated and propagated along the interfaces between lamellae before plastic deformation. The driving force for the fracture process is the tensile stress, which is consistent with a previous study. [1] In specimens with a slit notch, most cracks are initiated directly from the notch root and extended along lamellar interfaces. The main crack can be stopped or deflected into a delamination mode by a barrier grain with a lamellar interface orientation deviated from the direction of crack propagation. In this case, new cracks are nucleated along lamellar interfaces of grains with favorable orientation ahead of the barrier grain. The main crack and a new crack are then linked by the translamellar cleavage fracture of the barrier grain with increasing applied load. In order to extend the main crack, further increases of the applied load are needed to move the high stress region into the ligament until catastrophic fracture. The FEM calculations reveal that the strength along lamellar interfaces (interlamellar fracture) is as low as 50 MPa and appreciably lower than the strength perpendicular to the lamellae (translamellar fracture), which shows a value higher than 120 MPa. This explains the reason why cracks nucleate and preferably extend along the lamellar interfaces.
Micromechanisms of Deformation and Fracture in a Ti3Al-Nb Alloy

Abstract:The object of this study has been to gain a greater understanding of deformation and fracture processes in a Ti-24Al-11Nb (at %) alloy. The in-situ TEM deformation technique has been used to observe these processes as they occur. Material characterization studies revealed the existence of three different crystal structures in the material (α2, B2 and orthorhombic (0)). Slip is first initiated in the B2 and 0 phases. Although dislocations are observed in the α2 phase in the deformed material, they are seen only in high-stress regions and only in some laths. While numerous dislocations may be injected into the corresponding grain and phase boundaries, slip does not easily propagate into the α2 phase. Cracks are seen to originate most frequently in the regions transformed fully to α2 laths, and sometimes in the regions that contain α2 laths at prior β grain boundaries. Failure of grain or phase boundaries in the B2 or 0 phases where no α2 is present is not observed. Crack branching in the α2 phase is common, particularly in the vicinity of phase boundaries. Crack propagation in the B2 and 0 phases occurs by plastic thinning, and cracks formed in the α2 lath regions are either stopped in phase boundaries or blunted in the neighboring 0 or B2 grains.
