Abstract:A lightwave centralized and dispersion immune RoF scheme is demonstrated by combining the use of a dual-drive MZM in CO and an AWG in RN. Bidirectional transmission of 25 MS/s 128 QAM signal at 38.4 GHz and 1.25 Gb/s OOK signal with a RSOA is successfully achieved. The proposed scheme also features simple structure and high transmission stability.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:A bidirectional lightwave transport system employing direct modulation CATV and phase remodulation radio-over-fiber (ROF) signals in two-way transmission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To be the first system of reusing the phase of the transmitting lightwave with multi-carrier analog CATV signal, the transmission performances of CATV and ROF signals are investigated in bidirectional way, with the help of optical band-pass filters (OBPFs) at the receiving sites. Through a serious investigation, the transmitting light sources are successfully remodulated with RF signals for transmission. Brilliant transmission performances of composite second-order (CSO), composite triple-beat (CTB), and bit error rate (BER) were obtained; accompanied with acceptable carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) value. This proposed system reveals a prominent one with economy and convenience to be installed.

Abstract:A 34 Mb/s time-division photonic switching system is proposed. This system has significance in fiber sensor distribution networks and B-ISDN networks. A novel optical network is constructed. It consists of a 4 X 4 optical waveguide switch, a 1 X 4 fiber coupler, four fiber delay lines and polarization controllers. The wavelength in use is 1.3 micrometers . Four telephones are used as demonstrated terminals. All of the possible switching modes among four subscribers can work properly under the control of a micro-computer. Besides processing the normal audio signal and other integrated data, this system is also working in word-by-word mode. One word--the basic data structure and processing unit in this system--consists of eight bits. Moreover, one word can hold more than eight bits, so the throughput of the system can be promoted highly. System reliability and probability in public networks are discussed.

Abstract:To facilitate large-capacity wireless access with low cost and compact size, the broadband optical multi-Tx & multi-Rx module is developed by integrating multiple directly modulated lasers (DMLs) for the radio-over-fiber system. Under the WDM mode, the optical module can support multiple channels carrying heterogeneous traffics for both low-mobility and high-mobility scenarios. Through a 10-km analog radio-over-fiber (RoF) link, a data rate up to 1.4 Gbit/s is obtained. Furthermore, three real-time wireless traffics have been demonstrated in the trial, including TD-LTE, HD video (high-definition), and WiFi.

Abstract:We introduce an optical WDM communication system that uses 3 erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) with 12 channels and a total transmission length of 250 km. Eight of these 12 channels have a bit rate of 140 Mb/s each with a CMI code pattern, and the other 4 channels have a bit rate of 622 Mb/s each with an NRZ code pattern. This system works well with a low bit error rate. In China, this WDM system has the largest number of channels. The system setup and measured results are also shown

Abstract:A full-duplex CATV/wireless-over-fiber lightwave transmission system consisting of one broadband light source (BLS), two optical interleavers (ILs), one intensity modulator, and one phase modulator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The downstream light is optically promoted from 10Gbps/25GHz microwave (MW) data signal to 10Gbps/100GHz and 10Gbps/50GHz millimeter-wave (MMW) data signals in fiber-wireless convergence, and intensity-modulated with 50-550 MHz CATV signal. For up-link transmission, the downstream light is phase-remodulated with 10Gbps/25GHz MW data signal in fiber-wireless convergence. Over a 40-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and a 10-m radio frequency (RF) wireless transport, bit error rate (BER), carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), composite second-order (CSO), and composite triple-beat (CTB) are observed to perform well in such full-duplex CATV/wireless-over-fiber lightwave transmission systems. This full-duplex 100-GHz/50-GHz/25-GHz/550-MHz lightwave transmission system is an attractive alternative. This transmission system not only presents its advancement in the integration of fiber backbone and CATV/wireless feeder networks, but also it provides the advantages of a communication channel for higher data rates and bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper presents a 4-channel densely spaced optical frequency division multiplexing transmission/distribution system. Good bit error rate (BER) and eye diagrams are obtained. In more than 24 hours of continuous operation, no error bit is detected (BER < 1 X 10-14). The minimum received optical power measured before the demultiplexing Fabry-Perot filter is -30 dBm (BER equals 1 X 10-9).

Abstract:An all-optical forwarding relay (AOFR) system is proposed to provide an arbitrary forward with multiple channels and demonstrated by incorporating multiple acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) systems and an arbitrary optical forwarding system (AOFS) with eight channels carrying passive loads. The insertion loss and arbitrary switching time of the AOFS are tested to be <1.1 dB and ~3 ms, respectively. The number of hops, bit error rate, and $Q$ factor are evaluated with three modulation formats, 997 Mb/s 16-QAM, 27 Gb/s BPSK, and 54 Gb/s QPSK. The results indicate that the connection time of the optical communication is reduced to a few milliseconds by using the rapid arbitrary channel switching and the pre-point of ATP systems. In addition, the AOFR system is fully transparent to the channel wavelengths, forwarding ports, data rates, and modulation formats. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed AOFR system demonstrates the first arbitrary channel forwarding solution for large-capacity passive load among satellites, which will be an enabling solution for future interstellar optical communication networks.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a full-duplex radio-over-fiber system using a,single light source at central station (CS). Optical carrier suppression modulation scheme was employed to generate 40-GHz optical millimeter wave and up-convert the baseband signal simultaneously at CS for downlink transmission while the same optical carrier was reused at base station for uplink connection. The bidirectional full-duplex 2.5-Gb/s data was successfully transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SMF-28) for both upstream and downstream channels with less than 2-dB power penalty. This system shows simple cost-efficient configuration and good performance over long-distance delivery.

Abstract:A novel full-duplex radio-over-fiber (ROF) system was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system generates the optical millimeter wave using a phase modulator and a fiber Bragg grating at central station, and simultaneously, transmits the un-modulated optical carrier and the generated optical millimeter to the base station, at which the unmodulated optical carrier separated by the circulator and the fiber Bragg grating can be used for the uplink. The results of the experiment on the eye diagrams of the uplink and the downlink show that the proposed system has good performance in long-distance transmission.

Abstract:The high density wavelength division multiplexing (HD-WDM) system presented here has 8 channels in 1.55 micrometers optical band with wavelength spacing of 100 GHz. Each channel operates at 622 Mb/s by using directly modulated DFB-LD. Accurate temperature control and current control methods have been taken to ensure the wavelength stability of 200 MHz in standard deviation. Three high-quality EDFA's are used in the 420 km optical fiber transmission to compensate the loss of fiber, star couplers and F-P optical filter. An F-P filter with 0.3 nm bandwidth and 1.2 dB insertion loss is used as a demultiplexer in front of the receiver to select every channel and reduce amplified spontaneous emission noise. An optical receiver with PIN-FET front-end has been used, which has sensitivity of -31 dBm BER equals 10-10. Good SNR characteristic is obtained for all channels after the transmission. In this paper we describe an 8 X 622 Mb/s HD-WDM experiment system and its 420 km optical fiber transmission. Some critical problems in long distance HD-WDM transmission also have been studied in this paper.

Abstract:A five-node, eight-channel, wave-length division multiplexing (WDM) experimental all-optical network is present in China. The network has nodes of three OADMs and two OXCs, management function and self-healing function. Digital signal of 2.5 Gbit/s and analogue signals of CATV can be transmitted through and cross-connected. BER is less than 1.5 × 10-13 with digital signal of 2.5 Gbit/s through four of EDFAs and fiber of 143.2 km.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of re-configurable all optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) with dynamic gain control function is presented. The channel spacing of the input four-wavelength WDM signal is 3.2nm The function of adding and dropping any wavelength component of the signal is demonstrated. The total loss is less than 1dB (The gain of each SOA is set to about 6dB). Under the control of the gain management unit (GMU), the difference of each channel is less than 0.3dB. Due to the transparency of the OADM, it can add/drop different kinds (such as different format or bit rate) of optical signal. In this paper, we also presented the experimental setup and discussed its results. The highest test bit rate of the WDM signal is 2.5Gbit/s. Its applications in the WDM all optical networks are also discussed.

Abstract:A novel scheme of OADM(Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer) is proposed. It has the property of arbitrary add/drop channel compositions ( up to 4 wavelengths). In order to supress more of the homodyne crosstalk, we proposed a novel scheme of utilizing OLM(Optical Loop Mirror) so that we can utilizes the demultiplexer back-and-forth, thus utilizes it both as a demultiplexer and a multiplexer. The results show that we get a 5dB improve on the crosstalk; depression, that means a 3 times larger network scale than normal scheme of demultiplexer+switch array+coupler. We found that the reflection on the input port of demultiplexer is the main cause of homodyne crosstalk.
