Abstract:A series of image processing technologies and geometric measurement methods is introduced to quantify multiple scale microporosity in images. All the operations are non-destructive so as to ensure the accuracy of the results. With the application of these methods, various basic geometric parameters of the pores can be computed automatically in the computer, such as area, perimeter, direction etc. On the basis of these geometric parameters, probability entropy, probability distribution index and fractal dimension were introduced to describe the distribution of the three major characteristics of pore system, direction, area and form factor, respectively. Computer software developed on the basis of these methods was used to quantify the SEM images of clay samples during shear test. According to the quantification result, total pore area and average pore form factor reduce during the test. The variation of pore area and form factor is related to probability distribution index and fractal dimension, which indicates the variation of microstructures between pores. Error analysis shows that the deviation using the image processing is within 5%, and the deviations of statistical parameters are smaller in comparison with those of basic geometric parameters. The statistical methods are adapted to the quantification of 2D multiple scale objects. This paper offers a reliable basis for the quantification and characterization of microporosity by image processing.

Abstract:Clay is a material widely used in environmental geotechnics. Quantification of clay microstructure properties using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images is intuitively the simplest way, but the challenges remain in extracting more credible quantified micro-parameters that can represent the holistic macroscopic properties of clay from SEM images and with higher efficiency. In this paper, an improved quantification method is proposed to deal with this issue. The influence of different milling and drying methods on quantification results was analysed to improve reliability and efficiency. The A–K threshold determination method (A–K method) was proposed to calculate the optimal threshold in image processing. Also, the interval estimation method was introduced to obtain the optimal magnification and number of images. Then, this quantification method was applied to Hangzhou clay. The results show that anisotropy in the clay microstructure should be considered when choosing the observed surface. Moreover, there is no significant difference in micro-parameters between liquid nitrogen frozen-vacuum drying and critical point drying. A comparison among the A–K method, artificial method and theoretical methods that can determine thresholds shows that the proposed A–K method combines the advantages of all methods. The optimal magnification and number of images can be determined by mathematical theory, which also improves reliability and efficiency.

Abstract:In order to obtain SEM image information for soft clay microstructure quantitative research,a larger number of SEM images for soft clay in Zijingang of Hangzhou area were scanned;characteristics of soft clay microstructure porosity were described qualitatively,and three-dimensional porosity calculation model was built based on Image-pro Plus(IPP)software;according to calculus thought, three-dimensional porosity of soft clay was obtained; the connection between the feasibility of three-dimensional calculation model and the number and size of soft clay porosity changing with the threshold was studied;the relationship between plane porosity calculated by binarization processing and three-dimensional porosity obtained by three-dimensional calculation model was discussed.The results show that three-dimensional porosity calculation model is feasible,and statistical results conform to the logic of three-dimensional spatial distribution of pore;comparing with plane porosity calculated by binarization processing, the three-dimensional porosity obtained by three-dimensional calculation model is closer to the real situation; this method has a clear thinking and establishes a new approach for the quantitative research of microstructure of soft clay.

Abstract:Quantification of microstructure of fine-grained soil has been a difficult nut for long time. In this paper, authors introduce the computer image processing system and show some quantitative analyzing results of fine-grained soil's microstructure, and put forward three quantitative indexes for assessing soil microstructure, and finally make the quantitative appraisal for the microstructure of the compacted clay soil. The microstructure of clay soils is an important quality index of soil mass, which reflects the origin of soil mass, on the other hand is an important factor that determines the physical, mechanical and other engineering properties of soil mass. The microstructure of clay soils has been studied for several decades using a variety of techniques including optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction., transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, of which scanning electron microscopy, called SEM, is the most effective means. CIPS, which softwares for soil microstructure are made in Russion, has had great success in acquiring quantitative information of the microstruture of clay soils, especially in treating the orientation of the microstrutural units. The analysing results show that anisotropy,which is statistically computed by the CIPS automatically,can fully describe the orientation characteristic of microstructural image,but cannot reflect the order extent of microstructural units.

Abstract:The soil macro-mechanical properties depend on soil microstructure. In order to build the quantitative relation between the macro porosity and pore microstructure, Zhejiang clay was taken as an example in the paper. The pore microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and was quantitatively studied by Image Pro-Plus (IPP) software. The microcosmic indexes that describe the morphological feature and permutation characteristic were mainly measured. Especially, the pore grading curve was obtained to describe the permutation characteristic, and the nonuniformity coefficient of the pore grading curve was proposed, as well as the curvature coefficient. The regression analysis methods were used to build the quantitative relation. The results show that the structure and size of the clay pore are varied. The macro porosity is significantly related to the two microcosmic indexes of the roundness and the pore grading curve. Finally, the function relationship between macro porosity and pore microcosmic indexes was established.

Abstract:<p>An analyzing program SMAS based on digital image processing technique is developed for quantifying soil microstructure. By using SMAS, a series of geometrical and morphological indexes of soil particles/pores in microscale can be quantitatively determined. Three examples of using SMAS to quantify the microstructure features are shown. The analyzing results indicate that the developed program can effectively identify the morphology of soil particle and pore and accurately extract the soil microstructure indexes. A classification criterion for particle shape category is proposed based on the obtained values of morphology ratio and roundness. Moreover, effects of magnification and observation area of SEM images on the quantitative analysis results are discussed. It is important to select an appropriate magnification and observation area can cover as much structural information as possible while with high imaging quality. A recommendation approach is to stitch several images with relatively high magnification to one large image for quantification. Moreover, performing multiple scans on different zones of interest and then making comparative analysis is also an effective way to reduce quantification errors in microstructure observation. The findings of this investigation would be valuable for improving the reliability of quantitative characterization of soil microstructure on the basis of SEM images.</p>

Abstract:Analyzing the image of SEM of clay soil is a very important method to study the soil microstructure. But most of the traditional method is just qualitative. In fact, there are much information in the image of SEM, for example, the distance from the grain surface to the photographic plate. The authors apply GIS to recreate the three-dimension model of the clay through the SEM image. Also, the method of computing the porosity by GIS technique is introduced, including the two-dimension method and three-dimension method. At last, the analysis and comparison of these two methods are carried out. The result shows that the porosity obtained from two-dimension image (binary image) is affected by the threshold in binarization process, the lower the threshold, the more the volume of the grains, and the lower the porosity. Because the porosity obtained from three-dimension image is gotten directly from the grey-scale image and is not affected by the binarization process, it is more reasonable.

Abstract:In order to obtain a wealth of SEM image information for soil microstructure research，a larger number of SEM images for soft soil in Zijingang Hangzhou had been scanned. Three-dimensional calculation model was built by analyzing the characteristics of soft soil SEM image. First proposed the method of the use of Image-Pro Plus (IPP) to calculate soft soil three-dimensional porosity，the influences of calculated step size，magnification，threshold size and analysis area size on calculated results were studied. The results show that，calculation accuracy relates to step size，smaller step size is corresponding to a higher accuracy，and step size 2 can both satisfied the computing capacity and accuracy requirements. it is suitable to choose a magnification of 1200±300 times to calculate three-dimensional porosity. Threshold value size relates to magnification times，greater magnification should be increased threshold value accordingly. Area of analysis can not be too small，only by choosing over 70% of the total area of the image can effectively reflect the entire information of the image.

Abstract:Based on the image processing software PCAS,this paper studies the quantitative analysis method of the soil microstructure.By explaining the significance of threshold (T),pore throat closed radius (r),minimum pore area (S0) and statistical parameters during image identification.The method of selecting these parameters (T,r and S0) is proposed when the soil SEM image is processed.The SEM images of six clay samples were processed bysoftware,with different r and S0.Not only can the pore distribution image of the clay be analyzed automatically,but also the geometrical parameters and statistical parameters of the pore structure are obtained accurately,and the quantitative analysis of the pore structure in the clay is realized.The results of the image analysis finally show that the result image the pore distribution can better reflect the microstructure of the soil,with smaller r and S0.When there are less apparent porosity and the noise of the binary image.The microstructure image can be analyzed by increased r and S0 appropriately when there are more apparent porosity of the soil and noise in the binary image.

Abstract:scanning electron microscope has been widely used to research the microstructure of clayey soil. From the gray-scale image (SEM), much useful information can be extracted for quantitative analysis of clayey soil microstructure. Traditional image processing software can not satisfy all the requirements for quantitative analysis. Some useful spatial analysis tools that originally designed for macro terrain analysis in ArcGIS were introduced in this paper to extract particles, boundaries of particles .A clayey soil SEM from Ningming city, Guangxi province in China was used as example to illustrate mentioned operation and proved to be convenient and effective. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:The orientation of microstructures of clayey soils is a very important factor which influences soil engineering properties. In this paper, two quantitative techniques for soil microstructures are introduced, which include the D/MAXIII A autofabric goniometer ad Videolab image processing system. Four quantitative indexes are advanced, including Anisotropy, probability entropy, frequancy distribution function of platelet orientation of clay minerals (F(��))and frequency distribution function of orientation of clay aggregates (Q(��)). Finally, three kinds of soils, i. e. clay, silty clay and silt in Huaiyin, Jiangsu Province, which are moulded and prepared by same method, are analysed quantitatively. The research results show that there are obvious differences in orientation among these soil samples due to their different grain size and mineral composition. F (��) and Q (��) of the soil are usually not in agreement. To choose the frequency distribution function for appraising the orientation of soil depends on the study content and soil properties. The research results are of important significance for established the micromechanic model of ansotropical soil.

Abstract:SEM has been widely used to study the microstructure of clayey soil.Other than quantitative methods,most of them were qualitative methods.A method was presented to determine a fractal dimension associated with microstructure of clayey soil by image-processing techniques and Geographical Information System(GIS) software.Through the method of volume-area,the 3D fractal dimension was computed by use of GIS.This method could simplify the data process and raise the working efficiency.Through comparison between area-volume method and perimeter-area method,it was considered that the former method could reflect the 3D information more than the latter one.

Abstract:An indispensable process of geotechnical modeling with transparent soils involves capturing and analyzing images, in which favorable transparency is required for optical measurements. This paper proposes an objective framework for quantification of transparency in transparent soil based on its transmittance. Specifically, transparent soil with fused quartz serves as the soil sample for the detection of transmittance, and transmittance’s impact on imaging quality in geotechnical modeling with transparent soil is investigated through an evaluation function of image clarity. According to the results of research about transparent soil with fused quartz, viewing depth and refractive index matching are the dominant factors that affect variations in transmittance of transparent soil, and the variations of transmittance are subjected to exponential decay regarding viewing depth or refractive index matching based on the theoretical modeling’s function of curve fitting. Moreover, experimental results indicate that imaging quality of geotechnical modeling with transparent soil is enhanced with increasing transmittance, and imaging quality shows a remarkable improvement when transmittance is greater than 90%.

Abstract:The microstructure of soil is an important internal factor that determines its engineering properties. However, preparing suitable samples for microstructure analysis and quantifying structural parameters have always been challenging. A method of vacuum freeze drying-glue injection for preparing sandy soil samples is introduced. This method can remove water and maintain the samples' original structure for further processing. A series of sample images with different grain sizes were taken by SEM and optical microscope, respectively. Based on the self-developed soil microstructure quantitative analysis system SMAS, the images were quantitatively analyzed. A quantitative index system composed of soil particle number, particle perimeter, apparent porosity, shape factor, equivalent diameter, fractal dimension and shape ratio were proposed and used to quantitatively evaluate the microstructure characteristics of sand soil samples. The results show that the vacuum freeze drying-glue injection method for preparing samples has the advantages of convenient operation and reliable results, which can effectively maintain original structured sand. In comparison, SEM is more suitable for the microstructure analysis of fine sand, while optical microscopy is more suitable for medium/coarse sand. SMAS can effectively identify soil particles and pores in microstructure images, providing an efficient tool for quantitative analysis of the microstructure characteristics of sand or other soils.

Abstract:Microstructure of clayey soil is an important factor determining engineering properties of the clayey soil. Several latest techniques for analyzing microstructures of engineering clayey soil are presented, including the freeze-cut-drying method for preparing a soil specimen of high moisture content for analysis with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), image processing technique for quantifying the microstructure of the soil, the application of the energy dissipate X-ray technique (EDX) in determining the interparticle chemical compositions, and the CT technique in monitoring the development of internal failure in soil under loading. These techniques provide a series of effective tools to analyze systematically the microstructure and internal failure evolution of engineering clayey soil.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to determine a fractal dimension associated with microstructure of clayey soil by image-processing techniques and Geographical Information System (GIS) software. And the method of determining threshold in image-processing is discussed. Through analysis of SEM of clayey soil of Yun County of China, a conclusion is drawn that the microstructure of clayey soil is fractal, and the relationship between the fractal dimension and the microstructure of clay soil is invertigated.
Computer Vision Applied to In-Situ Specimen Orientation Adjustment for Quantitative SEM Analysis

Abstract:Quantitative analysis methods based on the usage of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), such as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, often require specimens to have a flat surface oriented normal to the electron beam. In-situ procedures for putting microscopic flat surfaces into this orientation generally rely on stereoscopic methods that measure the change in surface vector projections when the surface is tilted by some known angle. Although these methods have been used in the past, there is no detailed statistical analysis of the uncertainties involved in such methods, which leaves an uncertainty in how precisely a specimen can be oriented. Here, we present a first principles derivation of a specimen orientation method and apply our method to a flat sample to demonstrate it. Unlike previous works, we develop a computer vision program using the Scale Invariant Feature Transform to automate and expedite the process of making measurements on our SEM images, thus enabling a detailed statistical analysis of the method with a large sample size. We find that our specimen orientation method is able to orient flat surfaces with high precision and can further provide insight into errors involved in the standard SEM rotation and tilt operations.

Influencing factors on SEM images quantification of soil fabric

Abstract:Based on a series of SEM observations on the studied soil samples, the apparent porosity and fractal dimension were calculated, the influences of threshold, analyzing size, scanning position and magnification ratio on quantitative analysis results of soil microstructure were investigated, and the involved mechanisms of the relevant factors were discussed. It is found that the pore structure parameters obtained at relatively low threshold values are close to soil real fabric. Relatively high threshold value is necessary and reasonable when analyzing the morphological characteristics of soil particles. Magnification ratio plays an important role in analyzing the microstructure of soil by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and a reasonable magnification ratio should be chosen on the basis of research subject and purpose. According to the research results, some useful threshold values and magnification ratio are recommended in this investigation. The suggestions and comments related to testing, observing, and image analyzing techniques during scanning process are given. It is significant for obtaining real and objective microstructure parameters by using SEM. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Abstract:A new technique for quantitative analysis of the orientation distribution of soil grains from SEM images,slope-aspect technique,was described in this paper.The pixels at the edge of the particles of SEM were abstracted by the method of slope analysis.Because the aspect values of the pixels at the edge of the particles are orthogonal to the orientation of the particles,the orientation characteristics of a SEM image of soil samples can be obtained by quantitatively analyzing the aspect of the pixels at the edge of the particles in SEM.Some quantitative analysis techniques,including rosette diagrams,index of anisotropy and main orientation angle were also used.Through some examples,the slope-aspect technique is proved to be an efficient technique in examining orientation patterns of clay or sand soil microstructure,and it can provide more reasonable rosette histogram,index of anisotropy and main orientation angle.It also shows that the results in low slop classes can not present the orientation characteristics of whole sample because of noise and algorithmic error.But aspect values of pixels with higher slope class on the boundaries of particles can well present the orientation pattern of soil samples.
