Abstract:The curing behavior of thermosetting polymer materials is crucial to the quality and performance of their composite products, which promotes the development of the curing process monitoring. A novel strategy for real-time monitoring of the curing process of thermosetting resin using magnetic fiber (MF) with sensitive stress impedance effect is proposed. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamical mechanical analysis are performed to obtain the curing degree, modulus, and glass transition temperature (T-g) as a calibration curve to establish a relationship with the impedance of MF embedded in resin during the curing cycle, which is determined by the internal stresses around the MF mainly induced by the crosslinking reaction and cooling shrinkage of resin. The dynamic physical properties of epoxy resin during curing process can be effectively and continuously monitored in real-time through the curing electrogram from the integrated MF sensor signal output, which can digitalize the evolution of resin crosslinking reaction and capture the gelation point, T-g and local mechanical state. The MF sensors for curing process monitoring is a promising technology to be developed into a life-cycle structural health monitoring of polymer composites and instrumental to their smart manufacturing advancement.

Abstract:With the aid of the latest fiber-optic sensing technology, parameters in the cure process of thermosetting resin composite can be monitored entirely and efficiently. Based on the behavior of the refractive of resin matrix and intensity modulation of the transmitted light, experiment results of viscosity measurement in composite cure process using fiber-optic sensors are presented. The sensor signal can be used to monitor the process, detect the time when the viscosity of resin matrix is lowest and the end of the cure without calibration. The experiments of monitoring curing process of composite materials are successively made in hot-press, model autoclave and large autoclave in the manufacture field, the results are consistent and fit very well with the results of numerical simulation and the results monitored by dynamic dielectric sensor. With this technology, the cure process becomes more apparent and controllable, which will greatly improve the cured products and reduce the cost.

Abstract:A new sort of optic fiber sensor was designed, by measuring the speckle spatial spectrum at the end face of which, the variation of refractive index of resin surrounding the embedded optical fiber can be obtained by means of the method developed here. The variation of speckle spatial spectrum depended on the variation of resin refractive index occurred in its curing process was calculated, and the relation between refractive index and cutoff frequency was given. The instrument error of the sensor was estimated. It was found that this sort of fiber sensor can be used to detect not only the gel point and end point in the curing process of resin, but also the temperature variation or vibration occurred in a structure and caused by the environment factors.

Abstract:Multifunctional composites realized by embedded sensing materials draw much attention to structural health monitoring applications. However, conventional composites are not able to recognize their strain behavior, meanwhile, the embedded sensing elements lack compatibility with host structures and inevitably cause the degradation of the properties. Herein, flexible and micro magnetic fibers (MFs) as embedded sensing units enable conventional composites to possess intelligent self-sensing ability. Combining impedance measurement with mechanical test, the sensing mechanism of MFs is elucidated that the stress-sensitivity of MFs derives from the natural ferromagnetic resonance induced by its intrinsic magnetic anisotropy. The uniaxial tensile and cyclic loading are executed to investigate the electromechanical response ability and monitoring stability of MF monofilament as a sensing element. Then, MFs are embedded into glass fiber (GF) reinforced composites to realize multi-functional MF/GF composites with self-sensing capability, which also do not deteriorate their original mechanical properties. The MF/GF composites inherit high strain sensitivity with a maximum gauge factor of 376, and simultaneously exhibit the ability of bending orientation recognition and damage detection. The MF as a low invasive and embedded functional fiber has great potential to realize self-sensing ability of fiber-reinforced composites, which find particular priority application in pressure vessels and pipes.

Abstract:In order to monitor curing process of epoxy resin in real time, the system for cure monitoring is established based on Fiber Bragg Grating. First, a bare FBG, a FBG packaged with quartz capillary and an accurate resistance thermometer are closely stacked into a special mould. Then the mould is filled with mixture of epoxy resin and curing agent. Finally they are heated and cured together in the temperature-controlled cabinet. The changes of temperature inside epoxy resin are detected by resistance thermometer. Meanwhile, the reflection wavelengths of two Fiber Bragg Gratings are measured by spectrum analyzer. Experimental results indicate that the temperature evolution monitored by FBG packaged with quartz capillary is the same as measurement results of resistance thermometer. During curing process, inner strain changes of epoxy resin can be taken in by the variation of wavelength difference of two FBGs. At the beginning of polymerization reaction, the strain inside epoxy resin quickly increases, and then gradually trends to constant value. When the curing process ends, the inner strain is -945 με. When the temperature drops down to room temperature, it is - 2953 με. The temperature and shrinkage strain monitor of epoxy resin has been implemented via using two FBGs. It is a new approach to monitor curing process of polymer materials.

Abstract:The curing of epoxy resin is a complex thermo-chemical process that is difficult to monitor using existing sensing systems. We monitored the curing process of an epoxy resin by using long-period fiber gratings. The refractive index of the epoxy resin increases during the curing process and can be measured to determine the degree of curing. We employed long-period fiber gratings that are sensitive to the refractive index of an external medium for the measurement of refractive index changes in the resin. We observed that the resonances of long-period fiber gratings increased their depth with the increased refractive index of the resin, which was well described by our simulation taking the coupling to radiation modes into account. We demonstrated that the degree of cure can be estimated from the depth of the grating resonances using a phenomenological model. At the same time, long-period fiber gratings are sensitive to temperature variations and internal strains that are induced during curing. These factors may affect the measurements of curing degree and should also be addressed.

Abstract:In the autoclave curing of laminates, the viscosity of the resin is very important for controlling the fabrication of composite structures. In this paper it is proposed to measure changes of viscosity of composite resin using fiber optic microbend attenuation. Optical fibers are selected and processed to increase sensitivities. Experimental viscosity measurements for different layup conditions have been made, and the results are compared with those of dielectric measurement. It is found that fiber optic attenuation is sensitive to composite cure monitoring in an autoclave with good reliability, and can indicate the point of lowest viscosity, the gel point, and the end point of the cure. The sensitivity is found to be related to the crossing angle between optical fiber and reinforcing fiber and to the pressure in the cure process. Embedded optical fibers that can be used for cure monitoring and that maintain optical waveguide performance have been developed for use in two sorts of vibration sensors (SMS-A and SMS-B) based on fiber optic vibration-mode statistics. In an experiment using an SMS-A sensor, the sensor precision is evaluated and shows that the measurement results are accurate and credible. A method of evaluating mechanical characteristics by vibration measurement is also described. In an experiment using an SMS-B sensor, measurements of vibration frequencies and amplitudes were made, and the factors that influence their sensitivity and measurement range are discussed. Abstract:Real-time cure monitoring of composite materials is very important to improve the performance of advanced composite materials. It is very difficult to monitor the cure process online using conventional methods. Fiber optic sensors in smart composite materials provide a unique opportunity to monitor the cure process of composite materials in real time by using embedded sensors. In this paper, extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are embedded in carbon/epoxy composite laminates and used to monitor the cure process simultaneously. Furthermore, measurements of residual strains of composite laminates during the cure have been performed. The results show that both EFPI and FBG sensors can be used to monitor the strain development of composite laminates with and without damage during cure. An excellent correlation between the EFPI and FBG sensors is presented. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version).

Abstract:Resin matrix composites are often used with metallic materials.The unidirectional laminate was fabricated by a filament wound method.The Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) was embedded between filament wound composite lamination and aluminum plate to monitor the interface performance of two different materials during the cure process,and it was compared with the results from the internal composite monitoring.The results show that the temperature evolution of the composite cure process was monitored exactly by the Fiber Bragg Grating;it was found that there is an obvious difference between the strains before and after the curing process.The Fiber Bragg Grating provides a tool to monitor the cure process between two different materials and a new method to analyze the interface performance.

Abstract:Curing activity in the preparation of solid composite propellants determines the performance of solid rocket motors in operation. Limited by the lack of effective monitoring tools, the complete curing behavior and thermal-induced curing kinetics are rarely disclosed. It is still a challenge to monitor in situ and in real-time the physical and chemical cross-linking reaction during the curing of propellant. Herein, we demonstrate a promising approach based on optical fiber capable of being implanted inside the propellant to monitor the internal stress evolution during the curing process, by taking hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene propellant as an example. Attributed to the strain and temperature sensitivity of a pair of optical fiber gratings, the thermal-assisted physico-chemical cross-linking states of curing process have been demonstrated in detail. By tracking the stress-induced wavelength shifts of fiber gratings and calculating the curing mechanism function, the complete curing roadmap, including the viscous flow stage, gel stage, hardening stage can be clearly revealed, and the curing completion times are obtained as 154, 81, and 40 h, at the curing temperatures of 60, 70, and 80 °C, respectively. The apparent activation energy of this curing system obtained by calculation is 73.88 kJ/mol. This flexible fiber-based sensor provides an effective tool for unraveling the cure kinetic mechanism, and paves a universal pathway to guide the preparation and applications of versatile composite materials for solid rocket motors.

Abstract:This paper proposes a flexible and highly sensitive carbon nanotube buckypaper as a sensing layer embedded within a composite for cure monitoring applications. The buckypaper was fabricated with mono-dispersion of multi-wall carbon nanotubes by a spray-vacuum filtration method. Six different curing conditions (with maximum heating temperatures of 120 °C, 108 °C, 95 °C, 90 °C, 85 °C and 75 °C) were designed to characterize and analyze the electromechanical response of the BP sensor to the composite structure, and the results indicated that the temperature coefficient of resistance of buckypaper is associated to the resin curing behavior. The critical value (-7.18 × 10-4 °C-1) of the temperature coefficient of resistance was determined. Experimental results also show that a stable three-dimensional network of resin molecular chains is formed and that the polymer presents a glassy state when the value of the temperature coefficient of resistance is greater than the critical value. Based on this relationship, a hypothesis was raised that for the complete curing of the resin, the temperature coefficient of resistance of the buckypaper sensor should meet the critical value condition, which was also consistent with the differential scanning calorimetry testing of the curing degree. The buckypaper sensor was found to be sensitive to the curing degree of the resin, and has a promising future in applications in composite manufacturing processes. Moreover, the properties of composite components are indeed able to be improved via the monitoring and optimization of the curing parameters.

Abstract:Dielectric analysis (DEA) is an effective method for monitoring the curing process of epoxy resin (EP) in situ, but the influence of curing temperature on the measurement results limits the application of DEA in curing process monitoring with variable temperature. In this study, the theoretical basis of using the glass transition as a bridge and monitoring the curing degree by ionic conductivity was analyzed. DEA experiments and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) experiments were carried out and the mathematical model of ionic conductivity, glass transition temperature, and curing degree of the EP established. The parameters in the model were only related to the composition of EP system in the model as verified for implementing curing-degree monitoring of the EP system cured at variable temperature. The FT-IR spectra measurement was carried out and the activation energy of curing reaction was calculated by results of DEA and DSC, which verified the reliability and scientificity of the method. The method of using glass transition as a bridge can monitor the curing degree in the curing process with variable temperature and extends DEA to the monitoring of this process under variable temperatures.

Abstract:Compared to the traditional thermal curing method, ultraviolet light-curing can effectively avoid the problems of long curing time and complicated curing equipment. In this paper, a geometric and physical model of the light-curing process of the glass fiber reinforced composite multilayer laminate is established based on the theory of optics and curing kinetics, considering the propagation of ultraviolet light in the laminate is affected by the interlayer during the light-curing process. The meta-analysis method is adopted to calculate and predict the changes in the curing degree, temperature, and stress fields during the light-curing process of glass fiber composites, which also analyzes and summarizes the multi-field distribution and its variation law during the process. By comparing the experimental data with the predicted results, the model's accuracy is verified, and the causes of errors are analyzed, providing an efficient analysis method to investigate the composite light-curing.

Abstract:A new optical fiber sensor to monitor resin flow was developed with general single mode fiber.The sensor was made of usual multi-model optical fibers.The working principle and the method fabricated the sensors were introduced.The sensor was used to monitor the actual resin injection process.The results show that the optical sensors presented in this paper can successfully catch the resin flow front and it is fit to monitor the resin flow process.

Abstract:The monitoring system of fiber Bragg grating for the RTM curing process was established. The real time monitoring for residual strain induced by resin cure during the RTM process was realized by measuring the relationship among wave deflection,temperature and curing time. The result shows that the relationship between the residual strain and the temperature change is approximately linear during the process of cooling, which supplies experimental support for the residual stress analysis of composite plate.

Abstract:Monitoring the structural health of fiber-reinforced composites from fabrication to in-service is important. Herein, two types of glass fibers (GF) coated with hybrids carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Ti3C2TX (MXene) were developed for life-long structural health monitoring. Two conductive layers consisting of CNTs and MXene laminated structure (LS) and randomly mixed structure (MS) were constructed on the single glass fiber surface by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Compared to pristine GF, LS and MS improved the tensile strength of single fibers by 20.2% and 25.4% for GF with LS (GFL) and GF with MS (GFM), respectively. They also enhanced the interfacial shear strength of the GFL-based and GFM-based composites by 10.11% and 34.22%, respectively. This enhancement was attributed to multiple interactions between CNTs and MXene, such as the mechanical interlocking effect and chemical bonds. Additionally, they could detect the in-situ curing information of the resin, effectively capturing the resin phase change, enabling the monitoring of resin flow, and detection of dry spots. The porous mixed CNTs/MXene layer, which had more voids for resin infiltration, resulted in a superior peak of Delta R/R0 change (1000%) for MS. Furthermore, both conductive layers could monitor the damage and warn of failure, accurately reflecting the details and crack growth under tensile action. The continuous laminated MXene nanosheets in LS enabled GFL to exhibit excellent cyclic stability and high sensitivity to tensile strain. In sum, by rationally designing the conductive structures, the unique requirements of the sensing fibers for life-long structural health monitoring at different stages were satisfied.

Abstract:To increase the service life of composite materials, self-healing, and damage detection are essential. Although a lot of research has been done on self-healing and damage-reporting materials, it is still difficult to combine self-healing with in-situ and real-time damage detection in bulk resin and composites. By integrating extrinsic self-healing based on microcapsules and internal self-healing based on coordination interaction, the simultaneous self-healing of matrix and interface damage of fiber-reinforced composites was achieved in this study. Specifically, two-component microcapsules filled with epoxy/mercaptan repair agent were inserted into the matrix and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were introduced into the surface of carbon fiber by electroless plating. Upon the rupture of microcapsules, matrix self-healing was used to reach a desirable level of synchronous healing efficiency. In the meantime, the excess sulfhydryl reacted with AgNPs on the fibers to establish a coordination bond for interface self-healing. More intriguingly, the high exothermic action of epoxy resin and mercaptan repair agent in the self-healing process was observed when using infrared thermal imaging technology for in-situ and real-time damage detection.
