Abstract:The removal and recycling of acetic acid from aqueous solutions is important for environmental protection and resource utilization. In this work, ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([EMIM][DEP]) as an entrainer for the extractive distillation of the system water + acetic acid was investigated. Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid + water, water + [EMIM]-[DEP], acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP], and water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] have been measured at 101.32 kPa by using an improved Rose Williams equilibrium still. The addition of [EMIM][DEP] showed a remarkable entrainer performance for the separation of acetic acid from its aqueous solution. The boiling point difference of the water + acetic acid system increased from 17.88 K (0 wt % IL) to 42.41 K (about 50 wt % IL), and the relative volatility (x(1)' = 0.9) increased from 1.60 (0 wt % IL) to 5.28 (about 50 wt % IL). On the basis of the chemical theory and the Hayden-O'Connell (HOC) method, the parameters of the NRTL model for the binary systems were obtained, and the predicted values of the ternary systems of water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] fitted the experimental VLE data well.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid+N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), acetic acid+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), DMSO+water, water+acetic acid+DMF, and water+acetic acid+DMSO have been measured at 13.33kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still. The association of acetic acid in vapor phase has been considered, and the nonideality of vapor phase was accounted for using the Hayden–O’Connell (HOC) method. The experimental binary data have been correlated by the NRTL, Wilson and van Laar models. The NRTL model parameters obtained from the binary data have been used to predict the ternary VLE data. The ternary predicted values obtained in this way agree well with the experimental values.

Abstract:Densities for binary mixtures consisting of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl) and water or hydrophilic organic solvents (methanol, acetonitrile. and N,N-dimethylformamide) have been determined at different temperatures ranging from (293.15 to 318 15) K and atmospheric pressure, with mole fractions of [bmim]Cl in the mixtures ranging from 0 to about 0 5. The density values increase as the [bmim]cl concentration increases or the temper attire decreases, and the temperature dependence has been correlated by a second-order polynomial equation The isobanic expansivity and apparent molar volume values for these binary mixtures have been calculated from the density data A comparison has been made for the obtained properties with those of similar systems reported in the literature when available

Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE) data for acetic acid+ dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) system was measured at 101.33 kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still.Thermodynamic consistency for the experimental data was examined by using point-by-point test,and the fugacity coefficients of components in the vapor phase were calculated by Hayden-O′connell method.van Laar,Wilson and NRTL Models were used during the data correlation,and the parameters were obtained. The calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental data.For NRTL model,the average absolute deviation of temperature is 0.26 K,and the average absolute deviation in vapor phase is 0.0027.These data provide the necessary basic data for the design of acetic acid extractive distillation process.

Abstract:The effects of ionic liquid mixtures on the phase behavior of azeotropic mixture of acetonitrile + water were presented through the experimental determinations of isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium for acetonitrile + water + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) and acetonitrile + water + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim][Cl]) + [BMIM][BF4] at atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa). The mole ratios of [BMIM][Cl] to [BMIM][BF4] in the mixing ILs were fixed at 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. The results showed that [BMIM][BF4] was ineffective in breaking the azeotropy of acetonitrile and water, which whereas could be broken when [BMIM]ICII reached a certain concentration in the mixing ILs. VLE data of ternary and quatemary mixtures were satisfactorily correlated and predicted with NRTL model and COSMO-SAC could give a reasonable prediction of VLE for the investigated mixtures. Additionally, the analysis of interactions among different molecules showed that the interactions between [BMIM][Cl] and water are strong while ones between [BMIM][BF4] and water weak. Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of acetic acid-N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) system was measured at 13.33 kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still. Thermodynamic consistency of the experimental data was confirmed. Acetic acid-DMF system has a maximum azeotropic point. The fugacity coefficients of components in vapor phase were calculated by the chemical theory. With the consideration of non-ideal state and association of acetic acid in vapor phase, van Laar, Wilson and NRTL models were used in data correlation, and model parameters were obtained. VLE calculated data were in good agreement with the experimental data. For NRTL model, average absolute value of deviation temperature is 0.47 K, and average absolute value of deviation vapor phase mole fraction of acetic acid is 0.0067. Acetic acid-DMF system azeotropic point is located by NRTL model, with the azeotropic point at 370.70 K, and mole fraction of acetic acid 0.3830.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the ternary system methanol (1) + dimethyl carbonate (DMC) (2) + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]) (3) were measured at 101.3 kPa by using a circulation VLE still. The mole fraction of [BMIM][PF6] (x 3) was varied from 0.05 to 0.15. Standard uncertainties of the experimental data were calculated. The experimental binary VLE data were correlated using Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC models. This work indicates that the addition of [BMIM][PF6] makes the methanol (1) + DMC (2) system have across-salt effect, change the activity coefficients of components, and increase the relative content of methanol in vapor phase. In addition, [BMIM][PF6] can totally eliminate the azeotropic phenomenon of methanol and DMC when its mole fraction in the liquid phase x 3 ≥ 0.05, which shows that [BMIM][PF6] can be used as an alternative extractant in the extractive distillation for the methanol (1) + DMC (2) system.

Abstract:Ionic liquid (IL) was selected as extractive distillation entrainer to separate the binary mixture of methanol and methyl propionate with the lowest azotropic temperature. Experimental determination of isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium for the system of methanol + methyl propionate + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BMIM][NTf2]) was made at atmospheric pressure with an all-glass dynamic recirculating still. The results show that the addition of [BMIM][NTf2] can produce an obvious salting-out effect and well enhances the relative volatility of methanol to methyl propionate, and the azeotropy of the investigated binary system is ultimately eliminated by increasing the concentration of IL to a certain value in liquid phase. Additionally, the experimental data were well fitted with the NRTL model and the binary parameters were obtained. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for the ternary system of ethyl acetate + acetonitrile + acetate-based ionic liquids (ILs) were obtained with a modified Othmer still at 101.3 kPa, and the used ILs were 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([BMIM][Ac]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][Ac]). The VLE data were correlated with the nonrandom two-liquid model and fitted well, indicating that the minimum mole fractions of [BMIM][Ac] and [EMIM][Ac] to eliminate azeotrope were 0.028 and 0.067, respectively. Both [BMIM][Ac] and [EMIM][Ac] led to a salting-out effect on ethyl acetate, and a higher concentration of ILs signified a stronger salt effect. In addition, interactions between ILs and solvents were estimated, and the polarity was analyzed with the σ-profiles, revealing the effect of ILs and the separation mechanism of the ternary system. The results indicated that both [BMIM][Ac] and [EMIM][Ac] could be qualified as solvents to separate ethyl acetate and acetonitrile. Based on the experimental data measured on the equilibrium scale and the separation mechanism calculated at the molecular scale, this work provides a useful strategy for studying the application of IL in extractive distillation in the future.

Abstract:The effect of C2-H of alkylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids on the interaction and vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) of the ethyl acetate + ethanol mixture was studied using spectroscopy and the COSMO-RS method. Concentration-dependent H-1 NMR chemical shifts of ethyl acetate + ethanol + [Bmim]BF4 or [Bmmim]BF4 (x(IL) = 0.1 and 0.3) systems show that the interaction between [Bmim]BF4 and ethanol is much stronger than that between [Bmmim]BF4 and ethanol. Moreover, the experimental and predicted VLE demonstrate that the improvement of relative volatility of ethyl acetate to ethanol by [Bmim]BF4 is better than that by [Bmmim]BF4. Also, sigma-profile obtained from COSMO-RS method indicates that the hydrogen bonding donator ability of [Bmim](+) is greater than that of [Bmmim](+). Therefore, it can be deduced that the acidic C2-H plays an important role in the interaction differentiation of the ionic liquids and their effect on the VLE of the ethyl acetate + ethanol system, resulting from the interaction of the acidic C2-H with the ethanol that is much stronger than with the ethyl acetate.
Determination and calculation of isobaric vapor equilibrium for acetonitrile+water+ionic liquid

Abstract:Acetonitrile is easy to form an azeotropic mixture with water and it is impossible to separate them through ordinary distillation technology. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) are employed as entrainer to separate acetonitrile and water. The isobaric vapor liquid equilibria (VLE) of acetonitrile + water + 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([EMIM] [DEP]), acetonitrile + water + {1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM] [OAC]) +[EMIM][DEP]} are determined at atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa) in a glass equilibrium still with a vapor cycle, indicating that the selected ILs can well improve the separation of acetonitrile and water mixture, and further eliminate its azeotropy. The VLE data of ternary and quaternary mixtures containing ILs are well correlated with NRTL model, and the binary interaction parameters of acetonitrile-[EMIM] [DEP], water-[EMIM] [DEP] and [EMIM] [OAC]-[EMIM] [DEP] are obtained. The experimental VLE was predicted using COSMO-SAC and the results were satisfactory. The interactions among different molecules are analyzed through quantum calculations showing that the interactions between water and ILs are stronger than ones between water and acetonitrile so that the used ILs here can improve the separation of acetonitrile and water.

Abstract:The hydrogen-bonding properties of binary systems consisting of a representative Bronsted acidic hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoracetate ([Bmim] [CF3CO2]) and a cosolvent, water or methanol, over the entire concentration range have been investigated by methods of attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. It has been found that the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the anion [CF3CO2](-), rather than the cation, and the cosolvent molecules are dominant at low concentration of cosolvent. The H-bond interaction site between the IL anion and water/methanol is the O atom in the -COO group, while the -CF3 group makes a positive contribution by donating electron to the carboxylic group, forming a cooperative hydrogen-bonding system. For the cation [Bmim](+), although the C2-H is the favorable proton donor in H-bonding interactions, the water/methanol molecules form H-bonds with the alkyl C-H at low water/methanol concentration due to the stronger interaction between C2-H and [CF3CO2](-). Interestingly, we found that the interaction between methanol and the IL is stronger than that between water and the IL because the methyl group in methanol has a positive contribution to the formation of H-bonds. The following sequential order of interaction strength is established: [Bmim](+)-methanol-[CF3CO2](-) > [Bmim](+)-water-[CF3CO2](-) > [Bmim](+)-[CF3CO2](-) > [CF3CO2](-)-methanol > [CF3CO2](-)-water > [Bmim](+)-methanol > [Bmim](+)-water.

Abstract:In this study, thermodynamic properties of the binary mixtures of ionic liquid with an organic compound, as potential solvent systems in pharmaceutical industry applications, are studied. The densities and viscosities of the binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4mim][BF4]) with acetonitrile, N,N-dimethylacetamide, methanol, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone were measured at atmospheric pressure over the [C4mim][BF4] mole fraction range from 0.1 to 0.9 and at temperatures from 303.15 to 333.15 K at intervals of 10 K. The densities were measured using a vibrating-tube digital density meter and the viscosities were measured using a capillary viscometer. The excess molar volumes (VE) and viscosity deviations (Δη) were calculated from densities and viscosities of mixture, respectively, and fitted to the Redlich–Kister polynomial. The optimally fitted parameters are also determined and the correlation results are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the excess molar volumes of binary mixtures of ionic liquid with different organic compounds are compared and discussed using the Hansen solubility parameter.

Abstract:Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) are widely studied in the biochemical process. In this work, because of the high viscosity of the IL, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, the organic solvents of dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and N,N-dimethylformamide were selected as the additives or diluents to reduce the viscosity of IL. The experimental measurements of the viscosity and density were performed at atmospheric pressure in the temperature ranging from (303.15 to 348.15) K. The influences of the organic solvents on the properties of IL were quantitatively analyzed. The excess properties were calculated to further understand the interaction between the IL and organic solvents.

Abstract:The formation of azeotrope brings severe challenges to the separation of butanone and ethyl acetate, two important chemical raw materials. In this article, two ionic liquids, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl] {[HMIM][NTf2]} and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl] {[EMIM][NTf2]}, and ethylene glycol (EG) were selected as entrainers to separate butanone and ethyl acetate. Vapor–liquid equilibrium data of butanone–ethyl acetate–[EMIM][NTf2], butanone–ethyl acetate–[HMIM][NTf2], and butanone–ethyl acetate–EG were measured at atmospheric pressure. The results show that the three extractants can effectively break the azeotrope of butanone–ethyl acetate, and the significant salt effect makes [EMIM][NTf2] and [HMIM][NTf2] show better separation ability than EG. Then, a non-random two liquid (NRTL) thermodynamic model was further used to fit the experimental data, and the average relative deviation was only 0.033, indicating that the NRTL model can well describe the influence of these three entrainers on the phase equilibrium behavior of butanone–ethyl acetate.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor liquid equilibria (VLE) data were measured at 101.3 kPa for three binary systems (water + 1-methoxy-2-propanol), (water + 2-methoxy-1-propanol), and (1-methoxy-2-propanol + 2-methoxy-1-propanol) by using a modified Rose-Williams still, in which both vapor and liquid phases circulate continuously. Positive deviations and azeotropic behaviors were found in systems (water + 1-methoxy-2-propanol) and (water + 2-methoxy-1-propanol), while a negative deviation was found in the system (1-methoxy-2-propanol + 2-rnethoxy-1-propanol). All of the experimental VLE data for the three binary systems were tested and verified to be thermodynamically consistent by the Herington area test and Van Ness point test. The nonideality of the vapor phase was corrected by the Hayden O'Connell method. The experimental isobaric VLE data were correlated'by using the universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) and nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) models, and the binary interaction parameters for the two models were reported. Results showed that both models correlated the experimental data with good accuracy.
