Abstract:Superplasticizers, polyacrylate latexes and asphalt emulsions were employed to investigate the influences of chemical admixtures with different sizes on the pore structure and impermeability of hardened cement pastes. With different admixture types and contents, pore structure and impermeability of specimens cured for 28 days were tested by mercury intrusion porosimetry and alternating current impedance, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy was also used to observe the microstructure of fresh and hardened pastes. The results show that, porosity, average pore size and inkbottle pores volume in the hardened cement pastes as well as permeability presented slight decrease with the increase in the content of superplasticizers. For the specimens with low latex content, the pore size in the hardened cement paste remained unchanged, or was coarsened, and the compactness and impermeability declined; for those with high latex content, the pore size was refined and compactness and impermeability were enhanced. Both of the compactness and impermeability increased with the increase in asphalt emulsion content. At the same content, the latex Ll, having smaller particle size was more effective than latex L2 and, the anionic asphalt emulsion was more effective than cationic asphalt emulsion on improving pore structure and impermeability, respectively. It was accepted that chemical admixtures were able to improve the flowability of fresh paste by enhancing the dispersion of cement grains, further the effects were extended to affect the pore structure and impermeability of hardened one. Meanwhile, the polymer was also effective to compact the interfacial zone between phases by filling up the pore space, which would lead to more compact structure of hardened paste. For the same type of chemical admixture at low content, the pore structure and impermeability were mainly influenced by the dispersion of cement grains, while at high content, the filling effect become dominant. For different types of chemical admixtures with the same filling effect, the better dispersion of cement grains would result in finer pore structure and higher impermeability.
