Abstract:The preliminary design of a nuclear power plant could be optimized with satisfying design requirements and safety regulations. Optimization methodology is of great importance for the design of a nuclear power plant in such cases that either space or weight is limited. In this work, a mathematical model package, which is used to evaluate the weight and volume of the reactor coolant system in Qinshan I nuclear power plant, was built and verified. The parameters, which influence the weight or volume of the system greater than others, were selected as optimization variables through the sensitivity analyses. Then the optimization was performed by means of the immune memory clone constraint multi-objective algorithm. The results show that the model is reliable for the evaluation of the reactor coolant system. The weight and volume of the system could be at least reduced by 9.71% and 8.16% respectively as compared to the prototype after being optimized. An optimal scheme was verified by the RELAP5/MOD3.2 code, the results show that the reactor core safety could be ascertained under station blackout accident and small break loss of coolant accident.

Abstract:The detailed models, which indicate the dynamic processes of mega-kilowatt pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plant (NPP), have very high order. They are difficult to be appied to the medium-to-Iong term simulation of power system, so the reduction of their order is of great value. A new strategy, which deals with the physical thermal circuit and the control system separately, is proposed in this paper according to the structure and operation of PWR. Then, the dynamic responses, with and without the influence of main pump, are carefully studied using the detailed models. It is shown that only the change of the flux is needed to consider particularly in the modeling of coolant circuit. Finally, the method of reduction and identification is presented for each individual link of the original detailed models.

Abstract:Thermal hydraulic analysis was performed for the 2004 ITER blanket design, whichwas based on the fabrication methods of forging, drilling and welding. Results show that, inthe original design, the flow distribution in radial holes was far from uniform because differentflow drivers were used in the radial holes. Improvement of the flow driver is proposed in thisstudy. With the optimization of the flow drivers, it is clearly shown that the total pressure dropdecreases and a better velocity distribution in radial holes is obtained. The more uniform heattransfer coefficient among the radial holes is beneficial for reducing thermal stress.

Abstract:The optimization of the circulating water system of pressurized water reactor nuclear power plants can effectively improve the profit without affecting the primary circuit operation, which is of great significance in enhancing the market competitiveness of nuclear power plants. The circulating water system of the nuclear power plant is modeled, and the circulating water system optimization scheme is formed after the nuclear power unit is reformed from three aspects: condenser heat transfer area, condenser connection mode, and circulating water pump operation mode. The circulating water system optimization calculation is carried out for each scheme by using the minimum annual cost method. Based on the sensitivity analysis of the factors that affect the profits of nuclear power plants, the best circulating water system optimization scheme is finally given for new nuclear power plants and nuclear power plants in operation, which provides a reference for the construction of related nuclear power projects.

Abstract:The primary circuit system mathematical model evaluating procedures were compiled,and the effects of thermal and structure parameters on the primary circuit system weight and volume were discussed.The multi-objective optimization of the primary circuit system weight and volume was carried out based on the self-developed hybrid particle swarm optimization.The calculation results show that the total weight and total volume of primary circuit system were reduced by 12.75% and 13.69% respectively after using the optimization strategy,and the optimization effect is obvious.

Abstract:Nuclear power has garnered significant attention as a clean energy resource in expediting carbon peaking and achieving carbon neutrality. It contributes to sustainable economic growth while addressing national energy security concerns. As one of the most crucial components, pressurized water reactors require improvements in several key aspects, including strengthening the natural circulation capacity, increasing the reactor power, and reducing the reactor volume. However, the volume of pressurized water reactors is usually positively correlated with their power. Increasing the reactor power results in an expansion of its volume, which poses challenges for the reactor layout and also requires additional investment. Hence, in order to reduce the reactor volume while meeting its performance requirements, this study introduces a novel design optimization approach utilizing an improved quantum fish swarm algorithm and intuitionistic linguistic decision-making. Firstly, a nonlinear mathematical model for volume optimization of the steam generator (SG) and pressurizer (PR) is constructed. Then, the improved quantum fish swarm algorithm is proposed to obtain volume optimization alternatives for the SG and PR. Quantum computation strategies are introduced to enhance the global optimization ability and population diversity. Additionally, the vision range and step size of the quantum fish swarm are adjusted adaptively to improve the optimization precision. To further accelerate the algorithm convergence, the prospect-elimination strategy is built. Last but not least, the intuitionistic linguistic decision-making is presented to gain the optimal design alternative by taking four characteristics into account, namely, the fuzziness and hesitancy of evaluation information, the consensus reaching process, the bounded rationality of decision-making behaviors, and the complementarity, independence and redundancy among nuclear evaluation criteria. A case study on the SG and PR design optimization is implemented to demonstrate the reliability and reasonability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:T he pressurizer optimization scheme built by considering engineering con-straints was modified .Based on Qinshan Ⅰ Nuclear Power Plant primary loop in which the original pressurizer design scheme was replaced by the modified one ,a RELAP5 model was built and the performants of optimized pressurizer during SBLOCA-LOFW and LOFW-ATWS accidents were studied ,and the results were compared with that of the original model . T he results show that modified optimization scheme has yielded pressure increase in the secondary side of steam generator ,w hich is in favor of ensuring steam turbine efficiency and safety .In the scope of this study ,the capability of the opti-mization model coping with accidents is comparable with that of the original one .

Abstract:The aim of this work is to develop a two-level optimization method for designing the optimum initial fuel loading pattern and burnable poison placement in pressurized water reactors. At the lower level, based on the fuel loading pattern (LP) optimized by backward diffusion calculation theory, Pontryagin’s maximum principle is employed to investigate the optimum arrangement of burnable poison (BP) that can generate the lowest radial power peaking factor (PPF). At the upper level a multi-objective problem (MOP), with LP and BP as two objective functions, is proposed by coordinate the interrelationship of LP and BP, and optimized by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The results of optimum designs called ‘Pareto optimum solutions’ are a set of multiple optimum solutions. After sensitivity analysis is performed, the final optimum solution which is chosen based on a typical VVER-1000 reactor reveals that the method could not only save the fuel consumption but also reduce the PPF in comparison to published data.

Abstract:The size of a nuclear component could be reduced by optimum selections of the operational and structural parameters .Before an optimized design scheme is manu‐factured ,it is necessary to obtain its transient behaviors and verify its feasibility under design basis accidents .In this work ,the RELAP5/MOD3.2 code was employed to simulate the transient characteristics of a proposed optimized scheme under the complete loss of off‐site power ,loss of feedwater and small break loss of coolant accidents ,and the safety criteria were compared with the prototype reactor design . The simulation results indicate that the safety criteria of the optimized scheme satisfy the design requirements ,and the safety of the optimized scheme can be guaranteed in those three accidents .

Abstract:Printed circuit heat exchanger has become a new choice for the intermediate heat exchanger of the lead/lead–bismuth cooled fast reactor coupled with supercritical carbon dioxide nuclear power system because of its large heat transfer area density, high power density and ability to work at high temperature and high pressure. In this study, the channel dimensions of the intermediate heat exchanger were optimized to improve its thermal–hydraulic performance. An in-house code for the thermal–hydraulic design of printed circuit heat exchanger with lead–bismuth and supercritical carbon dioxide as working fluid was built. The relationship between the cold side pressure drop of intermediate heat exchanger and cycle efficiency of the nuclear power system is revealed. The power density and pressure drop of the cold side are selected as two optimization objectives, and the multi-objective optimization process is conducted with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms II. The optimal design results of the intermediate heat exchanger are obtained with Pareto-front method. The Pareto-front shows that when the heat exchange density increases, the pressure loss of the cold side also increases, but more quickly than the former. Finally, considering the design limitations, the intermediate heat exchanger core design scheme is selected by the auxiliary function which considering both capital cost and operating cost.

Abstract:The radial power distribution is uneven in the Pressure Tube type SuperCritical Water-cooled Reactor (PT-SCWR) bundle because of the high fuel enrichment, the separation of light water coolant and heavy water moderator. The uneven profile will usually result in higher cladding temperature which cannot meet the design limit for SCWR. In order to optimize bundle design, the analysis of coupled neutronics/ thermal-hydraulics was carried out.The neutronics code WIMS-AECL and the subchannel code ATHAS are selected to conduct the coupled neutronics/thermal-hydraulics analysis for the PT-SCWR 54-elements bundle design. The optimization was carried out through (1) adopting staggered radial uranium enrichment profile and (2) optimizing the pitch-circle radiuses of element rings.The results showed that the obtained optimized bundle can meet the demand of limiting criteria for peak cladding temperature and negative coolant temperature coefficient. Abstract:An optimization design of China supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR) with the rated electric power of 1000 MWe (CSR1000) conceptual core is proposed. Steady-state performance of the proposed core is then studied with the SCWR core steady-state analysis code system SNTA. These key parameters such as burnup performance, reactivity control capability, power distribution, maximum fuel cladding temperature, and maximum linear power density are analyzed. The relative coolant flow rate of the second flow path, which is suited with assembly power, is also presented. The study shows that the refueling cycle of CSR1000 core can be extended effectively under the optimization design.
Core design study of a supercritical light water reactor with double row fuel rods

Abstract:An equilibrium core for supercritical light water reactor has been designed. A novel type of fuel assembly with dual rows of fuel rods between water rods is chosen and optimized to get more uniform assembly power distributions. Stainless steel is used for fuel rod cladding and structural material. Honeycomb structure filled with thermal isolation is introduced to reduce the usage of stainless steel and to keep moderator temperature below the pseudo critical temperature. Water flow scheme with ascending coolant flow in inner regions is carried out to achieve high outlet temperature. In order to enhance coolant outlet temperature, the radial power distributions needs to be as flat as possible through operation cycle. Fuel loading pattern and control rod pattern are optimized to flatten power distribution at inner regions. Axial fuel enrichment is divided into three parts to control axial power peak, which affects maximum cladding surface temperature.

Abstract:The simulations of a blanket cooling system were presented to address the choice of cooling channel geometry and coolant input data which are related to blanket engineering implementation. This work was performed using computer aided design (CAD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. Simulations were carried out for the blanket module with a size of 0.6 m × 0.45 m in toroidal plane, and the nuclear heat was applied on the cooling system at P n (neutron wall load) of 5 MW/m2. The structure factors and input data of hydraulics were investigated to explore the optimal parameters to match the PWR condition. It was found that the inlet velocity of first wall (FW) channel should be within the range of 2.48-3.34 m/s. As a result, the temperature rise (TR) of the coolant in the FW channel would be 24-25 K. This leads to the remaining space for TR within the range of 15 K in the piping circuits. It also indicated that the FW plays an important role in TR (reaches 60% of the whole cooling system) due to its high level of Pn and heat flux in the zones. It was predicted that the nuclear heat inside blanket module could be removed completely by the piping circuits with an acceptable pipe bore and the related input data. Finally, a possible design range of cooling parameters was proposed in view of engineering feasibility and blanket neutronics design. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Sub-channel analysis can improve the accuracy of reactor core thermal design. However, the important initial parameters contain various uncertainties during reactor operation. In this work, the Sub-channel Analysis Code of Supercritical reactor (SACOS) code, which is also applicable for Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), was used to study the coolant flow characteristic and fuel rod heat transfer characteristic of 1/8 assembly which has the maximum linear power density in 300 MWe PWR core firstly. Then the Wilks' method and Response Surface Method (RSM) were utilized to determine the influence of sub-channel input parameters uncertainties on the highest temperature of reactor core fuel rod and Minimum Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (MDNBR). The results show that in the most conservative conditions, the maximum temperature of the fuel rod and MDNBR were 2167.4 degrees C and 1.08, respectively. Considering the uncertainties of assembly inlet flow rate, inlet coolant temperature and system pressure, the 95% probability values (with 95% confidence) of fuel rod maximum and MDNBR calculated using response surface methodology were 2144.0 degrees C and 1.6, while they were 2137 degrees C and 1.74 calculated by Wilks' approach. Results show that the uncertainty analysis methods can provide larger reactor design criteria margin to improve the economy of reactor. Furthermore, the code was developed to have the capacity to perform the uncertainty study of sub-channel calculation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Investigation On Multi-Objective Optimal Design Of A Two Pass Condenser

Abstract:Condenser is one of the key components in nuclear power plant with pressurized water reactor. It is important to control the dimension and weight in the design of condenser through optimization techniques. In this paper, a mathematic model of a two pass condenser is set up for Qinshan I condenser. Some modifications are made based on the original multi-objective algorithm, and the comparison between modified algorithm and the original one is conducted. Furthermore, the multi-objective optimization design of the condenser, taking minimization of the coolant flow-rate and net weight as objectives, is carried out considering thermohydraulic and geometric constraints through hybrid Pareto-sorting multi-objective genetic algorithm (HPSMOGA). The sensitivities of some parameters, which may influence the coolant flow-rate and the net weight of condenser, are also analyzed. The results show that the mathematical model is agreeable for the condenser. it is also shown that the proposed multi-objective optimal method is more effective in searching non-dominated solutions. the sensitivity analysis show that the tube outer diameter, tube pitch, coolant velocity and coolant temperature rising influence the coolant flow-rate and net weight of the condenser more than other variables. The corresponding results would provide guidance in the engineering design of this type of condenser.

Abstract:Steam generator is one of the key equipments in the pressurized water reactor, from the performance point of view, it is necessary to apply optimization techniques to the design of the steam generator. In this work, the optimal designs of a U-tube steam generator (UTSG), taking minimization of the total volume and net weight as objective respectively, are carried out by considering thermohydraulic and geometric constraints using a complex-genetic algorithm (CGA). And the sensitivities of some parameters which influence the total volume and net weight of UTSG are also analyzed. Under the condition of constant secondary thermalhydraulic parameters of the steam generator, the optimal design indicates an obvious effect taking either the overall volume or the total weight of the steam generator as the objective. The optimization results show that the proposed optimal method is feasible and effective. And the results of optimal designs and sensitivity analysis would provide guidance in the engineering design of UTSG.

Abstract:For the compact PWR with cartridge fuel component, the application of flow partition design can significantly flatten the core outlet temperature distribution, improve the outlet subcooling, or reduce the coolant flow, to make more effective use of the coolant and greatly improve the core design performance. However, the three-dimensional power distribution shape of the core will change greatly during its lifetime, and it is difficult to reasonably distribute the flow. In this study, the closed channel core flow partition and water density feedback program is designed by studying the basis of flow partition and designing an optimization method that considers various factors. The optimization search of core flow distribution is carried out to maximize the subcooling degree at the component outlet and flatten the core outlet temperature distribution. In addition, the minimum coolant mass flow and the maximum outlet temperature are estimated under the given core thermal power, three-dimensional distribution and minimum outlet subcooling.
