Abstract:The structure and interaction of Mn/ceria interfaces were investigated under ultrahigh vacuum conditions with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) techniques. Mn was deposited on well-ordered reducible CeO2(1 1 1) thin films by thermal evaporation at room temperature. Deposition of Mn on both oxidized and reduced ceria surfaces can form the mixed Mn-Ce oxide at the interface. XPS data indicate that Ce4+ is partially reduced to Ce3+, while Mn is formally in the +2 oxidation state. STM results show the formation of two-dimensional manganese oxide features on ceria, which is consistent with the thermodynamics data. Our study demonstrates that Mn can modify both electronic and structural properties of ceria. (c) 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Interaction of Zr with oxidized and partially reduced ceria thin films

Abstract:The growth and electronic properties of Zr on the ceria thin films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and work function measurements. Metallic zirconium was vapor-deposited on the well-ordered fully oxidized CeO2(111) and partially reduced CeO2-x(111) (0<x<0.5) thin films, which were epitaxially grown on a Ru(0001) substrate, under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The results show that the deposition of Zr on both ceria surfaces leads to electron transfer from Zr to ceria, accompanied by partial reduction of Ce from Ce4+ to Ce3+ states and oxidation of metallic Zr to Zr4+. Moreover, with increasing the Zr coverage, the reduction degree of ceria films increases and eventually only Ce3+ is observed at a high coverage of Zr. The STM results suggest that Zr grows two-dimensionally (2D) on the CeO2(111) thin film at low coverages due to the strong interaction between Zr and CeO2(111).
A Theoretic Insight Into The Catalytic Activity Promotion Of Ceo2 Surfaces By Mn Doping

Abstract:In this paper, we investigated the primary reduction and oxygen replenishing processes over Mn substitutionally doped CeO2(111) surfaces by density functional theory with the on-site Coulomb correction (DFT + U). The results indicated that Mn doping could make the surface much more reducible and the adsorbed O-2 could be effectively activated to form superoxo (O-2(-)) and/or peroxo species (O-2(2-)). The Mn doping induced the Mn 3d-O 2p gap state instead of Ce 4f acting as an electrons acceptor and donor during the first oxygen vacancy formation and O-2 replenishing, which helped to lower the formation energy of the first and second oxygen vacancies to -0.46 eV and 1.40 eV, respectively. In contrast, the formation energy of a single oxygen vacancy in the pure ceria surface was 2.08 eV and only peroxo species were identified as the O-2 molecule adsorbed. Our work provides a theoretical and electronic insight into the catalytic redox processes of Mn doped ceria surfaces, which may help to understand the enhanced catalytic performances of MnOx-CeO2 oxides, as reported in previous experimental works.

Abstract:A series of CeO2/YbMn2O5 composite catalysts with varying CeO2 ratios are successfully synthesized using a typical co-precipitation method. The aim was to investigate the catalytic performance for CO oxidation to well understand the structure-activity relationship. Among all these catalysts, we observed that the complete oxidation temperature of the 30%-CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst for CO can be significantly reduced to around 240 °C. The results of XPS, BET, O2-TPD, CO-TPR, CO2-TPD and a range of characterizations have indicated that the CeO2/YbMn2O5 catalyst facilitates the redox cycle (Ce3+ + Mn4+ ↔ Ce4+ + Mn3+) on the CeO2-YbMn2O5 interface. This, in turn, improves the efficiency of electron transfer, increases active reaction sites, and further promotes activation of reactant molecules. This study provides a foundation for the research of composite catalysts based on mullite-type transition metal oxides in the field of CO catalysis.

Abstract:Ce0.5Zr0.5O2, Ce0.5Zr0.2Mn0.3O2 and Ce0.5Mn0.5O2 were prepared by citric acid sol–gel method. The effect of manganese on the structural and redox properties of ceria-based mixed oxides was investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses, temperature-programmed reduction and catalytic activity evaluation in the presence of excess O2. The results showed that some Mn cations could enter into the ceria lattice to form solid solutions. Mn3O4 appeared due to the instability of the mixed oxides with increment of the Mn doping ratio while another oxide Mn2O3 is detected in the physical mixture of ceria and manganese oxide. These Mn-doped mixed oxides, especially Ce0.5Mn0.5O2, presented better catalytic activities than Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 and even Pt-loaded catalyst for total oxidation of C3H8 and oxidative sorption of NO in the presence of excess oxygen. The oxidation ability of Mn and the strong interaction between Mn and Ce were suggested to promote the oxygen storage/transport capacity of the mixed oxides as well as reactive adsorption of nitric oxide and hydrocarbons.
Redox on Mn-Ce interface and its effects on low temperature selective catalytic reduction for NO x removal

Abstract:The objective of this work was to clearly elucidate the interactions on Mn-Ce interface and understand how they affect low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NO x removal. In this work, three Mn-Ce catalysts in similar particle size and morphology with different Mn-Ce interface areas were prepared. MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F had the tightest and largest amount of Mn-Ce interfaces compared with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -P and MnO 2 -CeO 2 -M, and also exhibited the highest NO conversion degree at 100–150 °C as well as the strongest activity of Mn species and lowest generation of N 2 O. The TG-DTG, XPS and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results proved the redox of Ce 4+ + Mn 3+ ↔ Ce 3+ + Mn 4+ on the Mn-Ce interface, and MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F had the highest Mn 4+ , Ce 3+ , O α concentrations. The results of the study on the redox reactions during the NH 3 -SCR process provided powerful evidence of the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ recycles that are important for low temperature NH 3 -SCR process. Moreover, the Mn-Ce interface was directly proved to benefit the surface acid sites, redox ability, and activity of the adsorbed intermediates. Both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) reaction mechanisms were observed in the SCR reaction with prepared Mn-Ce materials, where "fast SCR" can be observed with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F. Moreover, the Mn-Ce interface also lowers the activation energy of the low-temperature SCR process, with MnO 2 @CeO 2 -F having the lowest activation energy. The results from this work offered powerful evidences for the interactions of Mn/Ce redox at the Mn-Ce interface and elucidated clear understanding of the effects of Mn-Ce redox on low-temperature SCR process, which is expected to promote the NO x removal process.

In this study, we show that the steps at the (1 1 1) surface of CeO2 are highly reducible. Using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, we observed simultaneous loss of surface and subsurface oxygen close to a step. Despite their large changes in atomic coordination, the outermost Ce atoms in the Ce-terminated surface has a negligible relaxation compared with the O-terminated surface. The outermost and subsurface Ce atoms of the Ce-terminated surface are reduced to valences of +1 and +3, and electronic configuration of 5s25p64f16s2 and 5s25p64f1, respectively. Both of them have a local magnetic moment and they couple antiferromagnetically. The existence of the Ce-termination is important for a complete understanding of the surface structure and properties of CeO2.
Interaction between Cu Nanoparticles and CeO2(111) Film Surfaces

Abstract:The morphology and electronic structure of vapor-deposited Cu nanoparticles on a fully oxidized CeO2(111) surface at 300 K have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Cu nanoparticles were found dispersed on the CeO2 surface with a tendency to nucleate at step edges at very low coverage. The Cu atoms are oxidized to Cu+ upon deposition on CeO2 at 300 K, and this is accompanied by the partial reduction of the CeO2 thin film, as evidenced by the Cu LVV and Ce 3d spectra. Deposition of Cu above 0.5 monolayer (ML) gives rise to neutral Cu atoms and to the growth of two-layer Cu particles. These results indicate the presence of electronic metal-support interaction at the Cu/CeO2 interface, which involves electron transfer across the metal/support interface. Combining the SRPES and STM results, this charge transfer from Cu to CeO2 was quantified. It was found that the average charge transfer is largest at 0.22 ML (particle containing about 94 Cu atoms), where approximately one electron is transferred per Cu atom from Cu to CeO2, which agrees well with the Cu LVV result. Such quantitative insights will help to characterize the chemical state of active species and improve the understanding of particle size effects and the electronic metal-support interaction.

Co Oxidation Activity and Tpr Characterization of Ceo2-Supported Manganese Oxide Catalysts

Abstract:Cerium dioxide supported manganese oxide catalysts have been prepared and their catalytic activities for CO oxidation investigated. The catalysts have been characterized by using TPR and XRD. Only a small amount of Mn (10%) is needed to form active sites for CO oxidation, and the excess Mn oxide form bulk MnO2 particles which may cover a part of the active Mn oxide species resulting in the decrease of the catalytic activity. The catalytic activity also depends on the calcination temperature. The optimum calcination temperature is 600 degrees C. Two reduction peaks are observed in all Mn/CeO2(400 degrees C) catalyst The low-temperature peak is attributed to reduction of MnO2 or/and Mn2O3 to form Mn3O4; while the high-temperature peak is attributed to the reduction of Mn3O4 forming MnO. The MnO species on the reduced catalyst is more easily reoxidized to Mn3O4 than to MnO2. The average valence number of Mn atom in the catalyst decreases with increase in calcination temperature, and increases with Mn loading.

Interfacial structures and reactivities of CeO2/Cu(1 1 1) catalyst with strong interfacial interaction and charge transfer

Abstract:Interfacial interactions have been recognized as a crucial factor affecting interfacial structures and catalytic performance. Herein, the interfacial structures, interactions, and catalytic properties of CeO2/Cu(111) composites including monolayer, bilayer and trilayer CeO2(111) on Cu(111) substrate were comparatively studied by DFT + U calculations. Our results showed that the interfacial interaction between CeO2(111) and Cu(111) substrate increased linearly with the increase of CeO2(111) thickness. This trend was well rationalized by analyzing the strong interfacial interactions, which were mainly due to the strong O-Cu chemical bonds formed by the hybridization of O-2p orbitals and Cu-3d orbitals at the interface. Significant charge transfer from Cu(111) substrate to CeO2(111) layer resulted in the charge accumulations of surface O-Ce-O layer in order of ML-CeO2/Cu(111) (- 1.06 |e|) > BL-CeO2/Cu(111) (- 0.40 |e|) > TL-CeO2/Cu(111) (+ 0.36 |e|). The intrinsic activity was further identified by employing CO oxidation as model reaction, and followed the order of BL-CeO2/Cu(111) > ML-CeO2/Cu(111) > TL-CeO2/Cu(111) > ML-CeO2(111) > TL-CeO2(111) > BL-CeO2(111). The results showed that the strong interfacial interaction and charge transfer were key factors for the good stability and excellent catalytic activity of CeO2/Cu catalyst. All these findings provided insights for the design and application of ceria-based catalysts.

Unraveling the Interaction Between Fe and CeO2(111) Through Growth, Structure, and Thermal Stability Studies

Abstract:Fe on CeO2, inheriting the oxygen storage/release capacity of ceria and the catalytic activity of Fe with various d orbitals, has been widely used in heterogeneous catalysis. To explore the morphological and electronic structures of the ceria supported iron model catalyst, we employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to comprehensively investigate the growth, structure, and thermal stability of Fe deposited onto 3 nm thick well-ordered CeO2(111) thin films grown on Cu(111) at room temperature. At low coverage, Fe clusters tend to a two-dimensional random growth on CeO2(111). Charge transfer occurs between Fe and CeO2(111), leading to the oxidation of Fe to Fe2+ and reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+. The average charge per Fe atom and local surface dipole indicate the formation of Fe-O-Ce mixed oxides instead of FeO at the interface. Notably, an unprecedented (2/root 3 x 2/root 3)-R30 degrees wetting layer can be identified at high Fe coverage at 420 K. The evolutions of electronic and morphological structures of Fe on CeO2(111) provide deep insight into the metal-support interactions.
Morphology effects in MnCeOx solid solution-catalyzed NO reduction with CO: Active sites, water tolerance, and reaction pathway

Abstract:Morphological effects of nanoparticles are crucial in many solid-catalyzed chemical transformations. We herein prepared two manganese-ceria solid solutions, well-defined MnCeO x nanorods and MnCeO x -nanocubes, exposing preferentially (111) and (100) facets of ceria, respectively. The incorporation of Mn dopant into ceria lattice strongly enhanced the catalytic performance in the NO reduction with CO. MnCeO x (111) catalyst outperformed MnCeO x (100) counterpart due to its higher population density of oxygen vacancy defects. In-situ infrared spectroscopy investigations indicated that the reaction pathway over MnCeO x and pristine CeO 2 is similar and that besides the direct pathway, an indirect pathway via adsorbed hyponitrite as an intermediate cannot be ruled out. X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies as well as first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the enhanced catalytic performance of MnCeO x can be traced back to its "Mn—O L (VÖ)—Mn—O L (VÖ)—Ce" connectivities. The Mn dopant strongly facilitates the formation of surface oxygen vacancies (VÖ) by liberating surface lattice oxygen (O L ) via CO* + O L → CO 2 * + VÖ and promotes the reduction of NO, according to NO* + VÖ → N* + O L and 2N* → N 2 . The Mn dopant impact on both the adsorption of CO and activation of O L reveals that a balance between these two effects is critical for facilitating all reaction steps.

Relationships between the activities and Ce3+ concentrations of CeO2(111) for CO oxidation: A first-principle investigation

Abstract:CO oxidation at ceria surfaces has been studied for decades, and many efforts have been devoted to understanding the effect of surface reduction on the catalytic activity. In this work, we theoretically studied the CO oxidation on the clean and reduced CeO2(111) surfaces using different surface cells to determine the relationships between the reduction degrees and calculated reaction energetics. It is found that the calculated barrier for the direct reaction between CO and surface lattice O drastically decreases with the increase of surface reduction degree. From electronic analysis, we found that the surface reduction can lead to the occurrence of localized electrons at the surface Ce, which affects the charge distribution at surface O. As the result, the surface O becomes more negatively charged and therefore more active in reacting with CO. This work then suggests that the localized 4f electron reservoir of Ce can act as the “pseudo-anion” at reduced CeO2 surfaces to activate surface lattice O for catalytic oxidative reactions.

Abstract:The development of Ce-based materials is directly dependent on the catalyst surface defects, which is caused by the calcination steps required to increase structural stability. At the same time, the evaluation of cerium's redox properties under reaction conditions is of increasing relevant importance. The synthesis of Ce-UiO-66 and CeZr-UiO-66 and their subsequent calcination are presented here as a simple and inexpensive approach for achieving homogeneous and stable CeO2 and CeZrOx nanocrystals. The resulting materials constitute an ideal case study to thoroughly understand cerium redox properties. The Ce3+/Ce4+ redox properties are investigated by H2-TPR experiments exploited by in situ FT-IR and Ce M5-edge AP-NEXAFS spectroscopy. In the latter case, Ce3+ formation is quantified using the MCR-ALS protocol. FT-IR is then presented as a high potential/easily accessible technique for extracting valuable information about the cerium oxidation state under operating conditions. The dependence of the OH stretching vibration frequency on temperature and Ce reduction is described, providing a novel tool for qualitative monitoring of surface oxygen vacancy formation. Based on the reported results, the molecular absorption coefficient of the Ce3+ characteristic IR transition is tentatively evaluated, thus providing a basis for future Ce3+ quantification through FT-IR spectroscopy. Finally, the FT-IR limitations for Ce3+ quantification are discussed.
CeO2(111) Electronic Reducibility Tuned by Ultra-Small Supported Bimetallic Pt-Cu Clusters

Abstract:Controlling Ce4+ to Ce3+ electronic reducibility in a rare-earth binary oxide such as CeO2 has enormous applications in heterogeneous catalysis, where a profound understanding of reactivity and selectivity at the atomic level is yet to be reached. Thus, in this work we report an extensive DFT-based Basin Hopping global optimization study to find the most stable bimetallic Pt-Cu clusters supported on the CeO2(111) oxide surface, involving up to 5 atoms in size for all compositions. Our PBE+U global optimization calculations indicate a preference for Pt-Cu clusters to adopt 2D planar geometries parallel to the oxide surface, due to the formation of strong metal bonds to oxygen surface sites and charge transfer effects. The calculated adsorption energy values (E-ads) for both mono- and bimetallic systems are of the order of 1.79 up to 4.07 eV, implying a strong metal cluster interaction with the oxide surface. Our calculations indicate that at such sub-nanometer sizes, the number of Ce4+ surface atoms reduced to Ce3+ cations is mediated by the amount of Cu atoms within the cluster, reaching a maximum of three Ce3+ for a supported Cu-5 cluster. Our computational results have critical implications on the continuous understanding of the strong metal-support interactions over reducible oxides such as CeO2, as well as the advancement of frontier research areas such as heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SAC) and single-cluster catalysts (SCC).
Sm on CeO 2 (111): A Case for Ceria Modification via Strong Metal–Ceria Interaction

Abstract:The growth, electronic structure and stability of Sm on ordered CeO 2 (111) thin films grown on Cu(111) were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Metallic samarium was deposited on the CeO 2 (111) surface by thermal evaporation under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at room temperature. The XPS data suggest that metallic Sm is oxidized to Sm 3+ upon the deposition of Sm on CeO 2 , accompanied by the reduction of Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ . With increasing the Sm coverage, the concentration of Ce 3+ increases monotonically. After depositing 6 ML of Sm, only Ce 3+ is observed within the detection depth of XPS. The STM results indicate that Sm exhibits a two-dimensional growth on the CeO 2 (111) surface at low coverages. Annealing to higher temperatures leads to the agglomeration of Sm particles and concurrent diffusion of Sm into the ceria film. These results illustrate that Sm can modify both the electronic and structural properties of ceria.

Abstract:Ceria-based catalytic materials are known for their crystal-face-dependent catalytic properties. To obtain a molecular-level understanding of their surface chemistry, controlled synthesis of ceria with well-defined surface structures is required. We have thus studied the growth of CeOx nanostructures (NSs) and thin films on Pt(111). The strong metal-oxide interaction has often been invoked to explain catalytic processes over the Pt/CeOx catalysts. However, the Pt-CeOx interaction has not been understood at the atomic level. We show here that the interfacial interaction between Pt and ceria could indeed affect the surface structures of ceria, which could subsequently determine their catalytic chemistry. While ceria on Pt(111) typically exposes the CeO2(111) surface, we found that the structures of ceria layers with a thickness of three layers or less are highly dynamic and dependent on the annealing temperatures, owing to the electronic interaction between Pt and CeOx. A two-step kinetically limited growth procedure was used to prepare the ceria film that fully covers the Pt(111) substrate. For a ceria film of ~3–4 monolayer (ML) thickness on Pt(111), annealing in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) at 1000 K results in a surface of CeO2 (100), stabilized by a c-Ce2O3(100) buffer layer. Further oxidation at 900 K transforms the surface of the CeO2(100) thin film into a hexagonal CeO2(111) surface.

Abstract:MnO and CeO2 powders were mechanically mixed by a spatula and by milling to obtain loose-contact and tight-contact mixed oxides, respectively. The monoxides and their physical mixtures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brun-auer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO). The MnOx-CeO2 solid solu-tions did not form without any calcination process. The oxidation state of manganese tended to increase while the ionic valence of ce-rium decreased in the mixed oxides, accompanied with the formation of oxygen vacancies. This long-ranged electronic interaction occured more significantly in the tight-contact mixture of MnO and CeO2. The formation of more Mn4+and oxygen vacancies pro-moted the catalytic oxidation of NO in an oxygen-rich atmosphere.
