Abstract:In the present work, TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) were inserted in working electrode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The surface states of TNTs and their influences on charge recombination in cell were studied. The results of the absorption spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that Ti3+ species exist on TNTs' surfaces in the form of oxygen vacancy-Ti3+ states, and the analysis of the electrochemical impedance spectra of cells demonstrate that the electron recombination is aggravated in TNTs-containing cell due to the insertion of TNTs in working electrode. The possible reason was proposed. The inserted TNTs introduce oxygen vacancy-Ti3+ states in the band gap of TiO2, which can capture electrons validly and act as charge recombination centers, leading to the aggravated electron recombination in TNTs-containing cell. The results in this work demonstrate that, though Ti3+ ions absorbing the visible light is of great significance in photocatalysis, the oxygen vacancy-Ti3+ states, which exist on TNTs' surfaces, aggravate the electron recombination in DSSCs instead.
