Abstract:To assess changes in the lithium supply chain resulting from the development of the electric vehicle industry and corresponding impacts, this study established a regional dynamic flow model of the entire anthropogenic life cycle of lithium in China from 2000 to 2050. Based on historical data, this model provides output data including production, consumption and international trade of lithium embodied in five types of commodities. Results indicate that the amount of lithium flow in 2050 will be 13-20 times greater than that in 2015. The lithium applied in electric vehicles will account for the largest proportion of in-use stocks of lithium starting in 2022. Lithium recovery will not play a big role in reducing supply pressure until 2030. Comparing all types of lithium-containing commodities, import dependence on minerals will remain the greatest within the temporal boundary. This factor reflects a nonnegligible risk to the supply demand balance considering the high concentration of mineral import structure in China currently. Several policy recommendations are offered for the optimization of China's flow structure. On the demand side, limited capacity expansion and cutting overcapacity of downstream commodities should be under consideration to distribute lithium import more reasonably. On the supply side, the potential oversupply issues caused by low-grade scrap require further development of recycling technology.

Abstract:Flourishing sales of new electric vehicles have led to a considerable surge in demand for the vital, upstream raw material, lithium (Li). As an essential energy metal and raw material for the production of batteries, lithium has become indispensable to the electric vehicle industry. It has been identified as a strategic, emerging industrial mineral in China. Based on a literature review and qualitative analysis of the imbalance between the supply and demand of lithium raw materials in China, this paper analyzes the current challenges of China’s lithium supply chain, especially mining, pricing and recycling, that are obstructing the realization of China’s carbon neutrality. On this basis, relevant policy suggestions are proposed from three perspectives: strengthening lithium resource development and reserve capacity, promoting international cooperation for lithium supply, and properly regulating the circular economy of domestic lithium resources.

Impact of cobalt recycling on China's electrification process: Assessing the potential reduction in cobalt demand from battery recycling

Abstract:China is actively promoting the transition from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve its goal of carbon peaking and neutrality. However, this shift will result in a continuous increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries for EVs, leading to a significant rise in demand for cobalt, further exacerbating the risk of cobalt resource supply in China. The study considered three electrification levels, three battery technology routes, two battery capacities, two dynamic battery lifetimes, and two recycling efficiencies, resulting in 36 demand scenarios and 72 recycling scenarios while increasing the precision of the study to the inter-provincial level. The results indicate that China's cobalt demand will be huge, peaking around 2039, with annual demand ranging from 78.29 kt to 359.40 kt, and the current production capacity and reserves are completely inadequate to meet the growing cobalt demand. In some specific scenarios, secondary cobalt demand remains higher than or close to primary cobalt demand between 2035 and 2040, and secondary cobalt demand becomes a significant component affecting total cobalt demand. In terms of recycling, closed-loop recycling can cover 45.1%–59.3% of annual cobalt demand in 2039. With rapid recovery efficiency, cobalt recovery in multiple scenarios can already fully meet primary cobalt demand, and the recovery potential is enormous. Furthermore, adopting low-cobalt battery technology, which extends battery life and reduces battery replacement in EVs, can significantly reduce secondary cobalt demand. At the provincial level, cobalt demand and recycling in China are unevenly distributed, with provinces with high demand for cobalt showing a trend of shifting from inland areas in the northwest to central and eastern coastal areas. In contrast, the areas with the largest recycling volume remain in the north. Therefore, accelerating the promotion of low cobalt and long-life battery technology and improving recycling efficiency can greatly alleviate the cobalt supply risk in China's electrification process. Additionally, specific spatial layouts should be given attention to ensure the sound development of China's EV industry through national coordination so that the double carbon target can be accomplished on time or even ahead of schedule.

The Dynamic Evolution of the Material Flow of Lithium Resources in China

Abstract:As a strategic emerging mineral resource, lithium is widely used in new energy, new materials and other emerging industries. There exists a changing trend of the material flow, consumption and evolution of lithium resources in the market. Thus, this research constructed a material flow analysis system for lithium resources based on the trade correlation of the whole life cycle. The study used the material flow analysis method to analyze the supply, flow and stock of lithium resources in China from 2007 to 2020. The research shows that during that timeframe, China's cumulative consumption of lithium resources equivalent to lithium carbonate reached 309.9348 kt. The consumption of lithium in traditional and lithium electric fields increased from 14.3653 kt and 8.08228 kt in 2007 to 49.53125 kt and 90.75866 kt in 2020, respectively. From 2007 to 2011, the consumption of lithium in the traditional sector was greater than that in the lithium electric sector. From 2012 to 2020, with the innovation of network technology and the boom in the NEV market, the market for consumer lithium and power lithium grew rapidly, and the field of lithium with power batteries as the main driving force gradually became the major contributor to the consumption of lithium resources. With the rapid increase in the consumption demand for lithium resources, the supply structure of lithium resources in China has changed from domestic supply to international import. The external dependence of lithium resources has increased from 29.74% in 2007 to 70.75% in 2020. With increasing lithium consumption, the storage of lithium batteries increased from 20.69721 kt in 2007 to 341.6322 kt in 2020. At the same time, the scrap volume of lithium batteries increased rapidly, but the recycling volume of lithium resources was far lower than the scrap volume. The resource recycling potential is huge, and there is still a lot of room for the development of the sequential utilization of waste lithium-ion batteries.
Modeling the impact of nickel recycling from batteries on nickel demand during vehicle electrification in China from 2010 to 2050

Abstract:China is promoting the production and use of electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the shift will drive higher demand and tighter supply of nickel in China. We develop a stock-driven bottom-up dynamic substance flow analysis (SFA) model to simulate the demand trends of various EVs under 3 scenarios, the flow of nickel under 9 scenarios and the amount of recoverable nickel under 27 scenarios in China's EV industry from 2010 to 2050. The results indicate that China's current production capacity and primary reserves of nickel cannot meet the growing nickel demand, especially under the High EVs-LNCT scenarios, and closed-loop nickel recovery from EV batteries can effectively alleviate the demand-supply contradiction. In different scenarios, the annual recycling nickel could cover between 67.7 % and 96.6 % of the demand for EV batteries in 2050, and between 37.9 % and 58.1 % in terms of the cumulative quantity by 2050. When the low nickel battery technology is adopted and the recovery efficiency is rapidly improved, the recovered nickel would meet the demand for EV batteries to the highest degree. Therefore, sufficient attention should be paid to low-nickel battery technology and efficient recycling of spent EV batteries, which is of great significance to ensure the development of EV industry and the availability of nickel in China.

Abstract:Lithium has an increasingly strategic role as clean technologies emerge. This strategic role is especially evident for electric vehicle technology with a critical dependence on lithium-ion battery technology. China is the world's largest lithium consumer due to its rapid economic development, large population, and soaring consumer demand for electric vehicles driven by stricter air quality control regulations. Given this background, this study introduces the first lithium material flow analysis (MFA) for China. This MFA will inform national lithium management plans. The MFA results indicate that China's consumption was 86.7 kt of lithium carbonate equivalent in 2015, accounting for 50% of the global total. China's lithium resource is highly dependent on imports, 70% of spodumene concentrate is imported from Australia alone. Along the material life cycle (value) chain, lithium outflows were primarily from exports of lithium chemicals and lithium-embodied products. Remaining lithium in-use stocks are embodied in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, lubricating greases, and glasses/ceramics. Electric vehicle sales growth projections will likely increase China's dependence on lithium imports, lead to potential lithium supply security concerns for China. Large amount of lithium stock embodied in electric vehicles and other lithium-ion battery-containing products implies more opportunities for lithium recycling in a circular economy context.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is the key technology for climate change mitigation. The sustainability of LIB supply chain has caused widespread concern since the material utilization efficiency of LIB supply chain has not been well investigated. This study aims to fill this research gap by conducting a dynamic material flow analysis of lithium in China from 2015 to 2021. Results indicate that within the temporal boundary, lithium flow and in-use stock grew significantly in China due to the rapid development of the EV market, with lithium flow in domestic production of basic chemicals increasing by 614% to 100 kt, end-use consumption increasing by 160% to 35 kt, and in-use stock increasing by 62% to 195 kt. China has been a net importer of lithium, of which cumulative imports and exports were 343 kt and 169 kt, respectively. In addition, 103 kt of lithium was converted to inventories or was lost during the processing from 2015 to 2021. By optimizing inventory and processing, developing substitutes for lithium for non-battery applications, and improving lithium recycling, China's net import dependency of lithium could be reduced from 27%-86% to 0%-16%. Our study demonstrates that it is urgent to improve material utilization efficiency so that the lithium resource supply can be secured.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is significantly changing the landscape of human life. The feasibility of recycling and disposal of spent LIBs was proposed based on the study of their forecasted demand and distribution characteristics in China. The yearly processing capacity of recycling and disposal facilities of spent LIBs on a nationwide scale were estimated to be at least 50 kilotons. The recycling and disposal facilities should be established in the southeastern coast areas of China, which generated high-density spent LIBs. Beijing was chosen as a city case study to discuss the demand forecasting and present one detailed construction planning of spent LIBs recycling. The obtained thoughts and results can contribute to the recycling and disposal facilities of other Chinese megacities.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of new energy vehicles, in-use electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) are becoming an important component of urban mining. This paper analyzed the metal stocks in EVBs in China from 2009 to 2019 using a bottom-up method, which focused on the in-use stock of seven main metals, namely, nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium, copper, aluminum, and iron, in primary use stage and secondary use stage of three EVB types, namely, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery (NMC), lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), and lithium manganese oxide battery (LMO). It was found that the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) contributed to a dramatic increase in in-use metal stocks from 0.7 kt in 2009 to 1.1 Mt in 2019. To assess the increase, three scenarios simulating metal stocks in EVBs from 2020 to 2030 were analyzed, namely, baseline, NMC-dominated, and LFP-dominated, and results indicated that metal stocks will reach 20.6 Mt, 23.2 Mt, and 17.9 Mt, respectively, by 2030. Across the scenarios there is little proportional difference in metal stocks between the two use stages. The proportion of the three EVB types correlates to the development trend of EVB technology under each corresponding scenario. Besides, the in-use metal stocks in EVBs have high implied recycling potential and environmental benefit. The recycling potential of these seven metals is 1.0 Mt in 2019, and it will reach 20.0 Mt, 22.6 Mt, and 17.4 Mt, respectively, in 2030 under the three scenarios. The results reveal the current status and evolution characteristics of metal stocks in EVBs in China, and provide data for material flow analysis and life cycle management of EVBs.

Abstract:Concerns over supply risks of critical metals used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries are frequently underscored as impediments to the widespread development of EVs. With the progress to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 for China, projecting the critical metals demand for EV batteries and formulating strategies, especially circular economy strategies, to mitigate the risks of demand-supply imbalance in response to potential obstacles are necessary. However, the development scale of EVs in the transport sector to achieve China's carbon neutrality is unclear, and it remains uncertain to what extent circular economy strategies might contribute to the reduction of primary raw materials extraction. Consequently, we explore the future quantity of EVs in China required to achieve carbon neutrality and quantify the primary supply security levels of critical metals with the effort of battery cascade utilization, technology substitutions, recycling efficiency improvement, and novel business models, by integrating dynamic material flow analysis and national energy technology model. This study reveals that although 18%–30% of lithium and 20%–41% of cobalt, nickel, and manganese can be supplied to EVs through the reuse and recycling of end-of-life batteries, sustainable circular economy strategies alone are insufficient to obviate critical metals shortages for China's EV development. However, the supplementary capacity offered by second-life EV batteries, which refers to the use of batteries after they have reached the end of their first intended life, may prove adequate for China's prospective novel energy storage applications . The cumulative primary demand for lithium, cobalt, and nickel from 2021 to 2060 would reach 5–7 times, 23–114 times, and 4–19 times the corresponding mineral reserves in China. Substantial reduction of metals supply risks apart from lithium can be achieved by the cobalt-free battery technology developments combined with efficient recycling systems, where secondary supply can satisfy the demand as early as 2054.

Abstract:Various lithium batteries including primary lithium batteries (PLBs) and rechargeable lithium batteries (RLBs) have been extensively used in electrical and electrics. China as a populous and rapid developing country has become an important manufacturer, consumer and supplier of lithium batteries. This paper predicates the amount of various discarded lithium batteries based on the latest statistics and models. The discarded PLBs as a typical utilization in micro-computer is forecasted and exceed 200 metric tons in 2020. However, pushing by the electric vehicle industry, the quantity and weight of discarded RLBs in 2020 can surpass 25 billion units and 500 thousand metric tons, respectively. Further, China will reveal a much rapider speed of discarding of lithium batteries than total global level.
Evaluating the electric vehicle popularization trend in China after 2020 and its challenges in the recycling industry

Abstract:In recent years, China has started to develop electric vehicles (EVs) and has become the largest EV market in the world since 2015. Accordingly, the lithium-ion battery (LiB) industry has also been developing quickly in China. However, the Chinese government has decided to cancel the subsidy policy on EVs, which makes the EV market in China unpredictable in the future. Moreover, there will be a considerable number of end-of-life (EoL) EVs and waste LiBs generated in China. These wastes should be appropriately recycled to avoid resource waste or pollution problems. Nevertheless, the quantity and type of EoL EVs and waste LiBs has not been obtained. This research aims at unravelling the trend of EV sales and the volume and type of EoL EVs and waste LiBs in China. We found that it is fair to predict that EVs will increase as the Chinese government has planned even without the subsidy policy. Moreover, we estimated the number of EoL EVs and waste LiBs number based on their calendar lifespan and found that there will be 1.36 million EoL EVs and 11.36 million waste LiBs generated in China in 2030. Furthermore, most of these waste LiBs will be of the nickel cobalt manganese oxide type of ternary LiBs. However, due to the flow of second-hand vehicles from economically developed cities to less economically developed cities, only 400,000 EoL EVs and 3.4 million waste LiBs will be recycled through the formal recycling route. Such information is necessary when evaluating the environmental effect or profitability of the EoL EV and waste LiB recycling industry.
Estimation of end-of-life electric vehicle generation and analysis of the status and prospects of power battery recycling in China

Abstract:With the development of the electric vehicle (EV), vehicle end-of-life (EOL) management has become a significant challenge. This study sets two EV sales scenarios (low and high), compares the impact of two battery replacement methods (buying a new vehicle or replacing the battery) on future EOL EV production, and predicts the difference in the amount of EOL EV battery production under two probability functions (normal and Weibull's distributions). The results show that when the EV power battery is retired and the vehicle owner chooses to buy a new vehicle, the predicted scrap quantity under low sales and high sales (HS) scenarios in 2030 is 4.3 and 5.3 million, respectively. Replacing the battery and continuing to use the vehicle will mean fewer EOL vehicles are generated. Considering the construction of an EOL EV battery recycling management system in China is still in the exploratory period, it is necessary to encourage vehicle owners to replace the battery and continue to use the vehicle. Under a HS scenario, the predicted number of EOL EV batteries in 2030 is 3.8-7.4 million. In the next 10 years, the issue of EV recycling should be raised to the same level as the issue of EV popularisation.
The role of new energy vehicles battery recycling in reducing China's import dependance on lithium resources

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. China's lithium mines are highly dependant on imports, and the mitigating role of recycling new energy vehicle (NEV) batteries is not yet clear. In this research, a multifactor input GRA-BiLSTM forecasting model for NEV sales is proposed to predict the sales of NEVs under three scenarios from 2023 to 2030, and the number of end-of-life batteries in each year is calculated by the Weibull distribution. The results show that NEV sales in 2030 will reach 15.49 million units in the base scenario, with up to 10.5 Mt of lithium resources recovered from 2023 to 2030, reducing import dependance to 63% overall. Under each scenario, recycled batteries could play a role in reducing the value of lithium import dependance by at least 16%.

Dynamic material flow analysis of critical metals for lithium-ion battery system in China from 2000–2018

Abstract:<p>Lithium and cobalt are key raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study illustrates the evolution of lithium and cobalt metabolism in the LIB system in China by applying dynamic bottom-up material flow analysis. From 2000 to 2018, the consumption of LIBs increased from 1.4 kt (0.2 GWh) to 547.1 kt (102.9 GWh) in China. The cumulative consumption of lithium and cobalt for LIB production was 61.8 kt and 247.6 kt, respectively. From 2000 to 2014, the popularization of mobile phones and laptops promoted the consumption of lithium and cobalt. After 2015, electric automobiles gradually became a major driving force for the growth of lithium and cobalt consumption. The increasing use of LIBs resulted in the growth of in-use stocks of lithium and cobalt from 0.03 kt and 0.2 kt in 2000 to 17.5 kt and 31.0 kt in 2018, respectively. Meanwhile, end-of-life (EOL) LIBs were rapidly generated, with the increase from 0.1 kt/yr to 110.7 kt/yr. In 2018, 0.4 kt of lithium and 3.1 kt of cobalt were recovered from these EOL LIBs in 2018, which provided 4.2% and 12.8% of the lithium and cobalt supplies for new LIBs, respectively. Besides, 1.1 kt of EOL LFP batteries were used in echelon utilization in 2018. Based on the results, some recommendations were proposed for the sustainable development and waste management of LIB industries, including encouraging the innovation of LIB technology and combining multiple technologies, strengthening closed-loop management of LIBs, and promoting echelon utilization of EOL LIBs.</p>
Projecting Future Critical Material Demand and Recycling from China's Electric Passenger Vehicles Considering Vehicle Segment Heterogeneity

Abstract:Critical factors like electric vehicle market penetration, battery chemistry, and battery capacity determine future critical material demand and recycling potential from electric vehicles. However, current studies largely ignored the heterogeneity among vehicle segments. This study introduces a vehicle-model-based big-data driven approach to unveil electric vehicle characteristics at fleet-wide and vehicle-segment levels. Further, a bottom-up model was built to project the battery material flow dynamics in 8 scenarios, identifying middle and large vehicle segments as primary contributors. In the Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario, demand for lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese by 2050 will reach 182, 447, 61, and 44 kt, respectively, with recycled materials meeting 59 %, 58 %, 60 %, and 57 % of demand. The demand and recycling of critical materials have significant inherent uncertainty, with demand potentially fluctuating from one-quarter to twice the BAU level. Policies can greatly reduce primary resources for critical materials by guiding battery usage preferences and promoting recycling.
Potential for recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries in China

Abstract:The continual increase in new energy vehicles (NEVs) has created the urgent need to recycle lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the power battery installed in them. To solve the waste problem spent LIBs has created, identifying their number and utilizing them remain crucial, both as a result of economic and environmental concerns. In the current study, the logistic growth curve was adopted to predict NEV sales beginning 2013 through to 2030 in China. It is predicted NEV sales will reach 1.56 billion by 2030. Based on these figures, spent LIBs and the proportion of valuable metals they encase were estimated using the methods-of-material-flow analysis, the Weibull distribution model, and a sampling investigation. The economic potential for recycling spent LIBs from the extraction of valuable metals was therefore estimated. Results showed that based on the continual increase in NEV sales, 5.56 billion US dollars can be generated from extracting valuable metals from spent LIBs and LIBs2U.The economic potential from the recycling of spent LIBs could significantly fast-track the development of the spent LIB recycling industry in China. This could also alleviate the issue of the environmental degradation that occurs as a result of improper spent LIBs disposal.

A Paradox over Electric Vehicles, Mining of Lithium for Car Batteries

Abstract:Lithium, a silver-white alkali metal, with significantly high energy density, has been exploited for making rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). They have become one of the main energy storage solutions in modern electric cars (EVs). Cobalt, nickel, and manganese are three other key components of LiBs that power electric vehicles (EVs). Neodymium and dysprosium, two rare earth metals, are used in the permanent magnet-based motors of EVs. The operation of EVs also requires a high amount of electricity for recharging their LiBs. Thus, the CO2 emission is reduced during the operation of an EV if the recharged electricity is generated from non-carbon sources such as hydroelectricity, solar energy, and nuclear energy. LiBs in EVs have been pushed to the limit because of their limited storage capacity and charge/discharge cycles. Batteries account for a substantial portion of the size and weight of an EV and occupy the entire chassis. Thus, future LiBs must be smaller and more powerful with extended driving ranges and short charging times. The extended range and longevity of LiBs are feasible with advances in solid-state electrolytes and robust electrode materials. Attention must also be focused on the high-cost, energy, and time-demand steps of LiB manufacturing to reduce cost and turnover time. Solid strategies are required to promote the deployment of spent LiBs for power storage, solar energy, power grids, and other stationary usages. Recycling spent LiBs will alleviate the demand for virgin lithium and 2.6 × 1011 tons of lithium in seawater is a definite asset. Nonetheless, it remains unknown whether advances in battery production technology and recycling will substantially reduce the demand for lithium and other metals beyond 2050. Technical challenges in LiB manufacturing and lithium recycling must be overcome to sustain the deployment of EVs for reducing CO2 emissions. However, potential environmental problems associated with the production and operation of EVs deserve further studies while promoting their global deployment. Moreover, the combined repurposing and remanufacturing of spent LiBs also increases the environmental benefits of EVs. EVs will be equipped with more powerful computers and reliable software to monitor and optimize the operation of LiBs.

Uncovering the Evolution of Lead In-Use Stocks in Lead-Acid Batteries and the Impact on Future Lead Metabolism in China.

Abstract:This study aims to illustrate the evolution of lead in-use stocks, particularly in lead-acid batteries (LABs), and their impact on future lead metabolism in China. First, we used a bottom-up methodology to study the evolution of lead in-use stocks in China from 2000 to 2014. It was found that the lead in-use stocks increased from 0.91 to 7.75 Mt. The principal driving force of such change is the rapid development of LABs-driven electric vehicles. Then, we proposed three scenarios, low, baseline, and high in-use stocks, to project the lead demand and supply toward 2030. The results show that the LAB demand will decrease as a result of competition and replacement by lithium ion batteries. The lead demand in China will come to a peak around 2018-2020 under the three scenarios, then reduce to 3.7, 4.6, and 5.3 Mt/yr in 2030. Meanwhile, primary lead outputs will follow the increase of zinc production in China. Secondary lead recovered from spent LABs will also increase gradually. The overall unused lead stocks in 2030 will be 49.6, 44.8, and 41.2 Mt under the three scenarios, some 3.5-5.7 times as big as the lead in-use stocks. Thus, a large amount of lead will have to be safely stockpiled or exported in China.
