Abstract:In recent years, the demand for cobalt is increasing dramatically because of its critical role in clean energy technologies globally. China has been a leading consumer and refiner of cobalt, and meanwhile is a scarce country of cobalt resources. Its growing domestic demand may impose significant pressure on sustainable development of cobalt resources and make it potentially vulnerable to supply shortages. Aiming at identifying the potential opportunities for improving cobalt resource efficiency and supply security, dynamic stocks and flows analysis was applied to track and quantify the anthropogenic cobalt cycles in mainland China such as its production, use, and trade over the years 1994–2016. The analysis results showed that the production, trade and consumption of cobalt resources in mainland China grew significantly in the past two decades. China has been a net importer of cobalt raw materials but a net exporter of cobalt chemicals and final cobalt-containing products, indicating that China is bearing increasing environmental burden of processing cobalt product for other economies. The in-use stock of cobalt has reached over 140,000 t by 2016, of which the cobalt contained in in-use batteries accounted for approximately 77%. The recycling rate of end-of-life (Eol) products kept at a very low level, less than 20% in the past decades. The cumulative domestic demand of cobalt is projected to exceed China's reserve base by around 2022 based on scenario analysis. Furthermore, some recommendations were proposed for the sustainable development of China's cobalt resource, including the improvement of national cobalt reserve system, development of diversified resource supply channel and the establishment of a recycling system and associated regulations for cobalt-containing obsolete products.

Abstract:Owing to its key role in high-tech industry and clean energy technology, cobalt has been regarded as a critical material in many countries. In this paper, material flow analysis was used to quantitatively track cobalt material flows in China throughout the entire life cycle from 2000 to 2021. Based on data pertaining to cobalt commodity trade, cobalt loss during raw material processing, and recovered cobalt, we analysed the actual cobalt consumption in China. During the study period from 2000 to 2021, the main findings were as follows: (1) China's cobalt raw material imports accounted for 84.7% of the total raw materials acquired, while the export of cobalt-containing end products amounted to 32.6% of the total production. (2) China's cumulative net import of all cobalt commodities reached 561 kt, and battery products accounted for 73.3% of the total cobalt consumption. (3) China recovered 77 kt of cobalt from end-of-life products, while 327 kt of cobalt was not recovered. (4) The cumulative cobalt loss during raw material processing reached 288 kt, with the highest loss occurring in refining (51.0%), followed by manufacturing and fabrication (26.5%), beneficiation (12.3%), and ore mining (10.2%). The overall utilization efficiency of cobalt was 73.8% throughout the entire life cycle. (5) China's actual cobalt consumption reached 497 kt, accounting for 51.9% of the apparent cobalt consumption. Moreover, 61.1% of the cobalt products produced in China was consumed domestically, while 38.9% was exported. The massive export of cobalt commodities resulted in China bearing a disproportionate responsibility for carbon emission reduction. The research results can provide a scientific reference for the reasonable adjustment of the trade structure of cobalt commodities and realization of the economic and efficient utilization of cobalt resources in China.

Abstract:Cobalt is an increasingly important strategic metal with the emerging of clean energy technologies. China is a resource scarcity country but the world's largest cobalt consumer. It is of great strategic significance to study the application and current status of cobalt resources for the sustainable development of China's economy. The objective of this study is to quantitatively investigate the status of cobalt flows from raw materials to waste management in mainland China in 2015 by using material flows analysis (MFA), and to identify the material efficiency and supply security strategy for sustainable use of cobalt. The results show that China's overall supply of raw materials, chemical production and product manufacture of cobalt in 2015 were 66.5 kt, 62.9 kt and 45.4 kt, respectively. China's cobalt is highly reliant on imports with a dependency of over 80%. Cobalt outflows were mainly from exports of cobalt chemicals and end-use products. At the end-use product stage, batteries consume the most cobalt, followed by superalloys, cemented carbides and magnets. The emerging of the electric vehicle industry seems to increase the burden of cobalt supply, but also represents huge opportunities for cobalt recycling as a secondary resource. Future efforts on improving material efficiency and ensuring supply security should focus on reducing losses at the beneficiation process by technology upgrades, improving the cobalt recycling rate by integrating cobalt resources into China's circular economy and environment policy, and establishing national cobalt collection system. This study can provide guidance for future decision-making around the clean production and rational utilization of cobalt resources. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Assessment of cobalt recycling potential and environmental impact in China from 1994 to 2020

Abstract:Cobalt recycling is important for solving environmental problems such as resource shortage and pollution emissions. This paper quantifies the positive significance of cobalt recycling on resource replenishment and pollution emission by using the substance flow analysis and life cycle analysis. The results show that the proportion of recycled cobalt supplied as cobalt raw material is 7.1%, which improves the supply structure of the resource. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of recycling cobalt using the combined treatment process is low. The environmental impact of mining cobalt from mines is about 4.03–41.53 times that of recycling cobalt from cobaltiferous waste materials. However, the overall cobalt recycling is not ideal. First, the cobalt recycling rate is growing slowly. From 1994 to 2020, 245,132 t of cobalt-containing final products entered waste management in China. However, only 79,593 t of cobalt have been recycled, with a recycling rate of 32.47%. Secondly, many recycling enterprises only carry out recycling for a certain type of cobaltiferous waste materials due to the non-uniform cobalt recycling process. Finally, China’s cobalt recycling policy does not divide the recycling channels for cobalt waste and does not regulate the specific process. In the future, China should set up separate recycling systems for cobaltiferous waste materials according to different categories and consider adopting combined treatment processes. China can only promote the sustainable use of cobalt if it ensures stable and orderly cobalt recycling in terms of policy and technology.

Abstract:China is actively promoting the transition from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve its goal of carbon peaking and neutrality. However, this shift will result in a continuous increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries for EVs, leading to a significant rise in demand for cobalt, further exacerbating the risk of cobalt resource supply in China. The study considered three electrification levels, three battery technology routes, two battery capacities, two dynamic battery lifetimes, and two recycling efficiencies, resulting in 36 demand scenarios and 72 recycling scenarios while increasing the precision of the study to the inter-provincial level. The results indicate that China's cobalt demand will be huge, peaking around 2039, with annual demand ranging from 78.29 kt to 359.40 kt, and the current production capacity and reserves are completely inadequate to meet the growing cobalt demand. In some specific scenarios, secondary cobalt demand remains higher than or close to primary cobalt demand between 2035 and 2040, and secondary cobalt demand becomes a significant component affecting total cobalt demand. In terms of recycling, closed-loop recycling can cover 45.1%–59.3% of annual cobalt demand in 2039. With rapid recovery efficiency, cobalt recovery in multiple scenarios can already fully meet primary cobalt demand, and the recovery potential is enormous. Furthermore, adopting low-cobalt battery technology, which extends battery life and reduces battery replacement in EVs, can significantly reduce secondary cobalt demand. At the provincial level, cobalt demand and recycling in China are unevenly distributed, with provinces with high demand for cobalt showing a trend of shifting from inland areas in the northwest to central and eastern coastal areas. In contrast, the areas with the largest recycling volume remain in the north. Therefore, accelerating the promotion of low cobalt and long-life battery technology and improving recycling efficiency can greatly alleviate the cobalt supply risk in China's electrification process. Additionally, specific spatial layouts should be given attention to ensure the sound development of China's EV industry through national coordination so that the double carbon target can be accomplished on time or even ahead of schedule.

Abstract:Cobalt is a critical metal due to its emergent use in lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems. The global demand for cobalt is expected to grow significantly, leading to an enhanced global cobalt trade network. However, such trade induced a large amount of embodied CO2 emission, which has not been explored. This study fills this research gap by employing a trade-linked material flow analysis (MFA) for the year 2020. Future supply and demand for cobalt are also predicted by conducting scenarios analysis. Results show that consumer batteries (CB) and electric vehicles (EVs) were the top two primary cobalt consumption sectors in 2020. Also, regional disparities existed in terms of corresponding CO2 emissions and environmental externalities related with the global cobalt trade. Trade activities for cobalt-containing final products led to the highest embodied CO2 emission. It is therefore urgent to encourage cobalt recycling, internalize environmental externalities, mitigate cobalt supply risks, and encourage technology innovation.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the potential supply risks of critical battery materials, such as cobalt, for electric mobility transitions. While battery technology and recycling advancement are two widely acknowledged strategies for addressing such supply risks, the extent to which they will relieve global and regional cobalt demand–supply imbalance remains poorly understood. Here, we address this gap by simulating historical (1998-2019) and future (2020-2050) global cobalt cycles covering both traditional and emerging end uses with regional resolution (China, the U.S., Japan, the EU, and the rest of the world). We show that cobalt-free batteries and recycling progress can indeed significantly alleviate long-term cobalt supply risks. However, the cobalt supply shortage appears inevitable in the short- to medium-term (during 2028-2033), even under the most technologically optimistic scenario. Our results reveal varying cobalt supply security levels by region and indicate the urgency of boosting primary cobalt supply to ensure global e-mobility ambitions.

Dynamic material flow analysis of critical metals for lithium-ion battery system in China from 2000–2018

Abstract:<p>Lithium and cobalt are key raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study illustrates the evolution of lithium and cobalt metabolism in the LIB system in China by applying dynamic bottom-up material flow analysis. From 2000 to 2018, the consumption of LIBs increased from 1.4 kt (0.2 GWh) to 547.1 kt (102.9 GWh) in China. The cumulative consumption of lithium and cobalt for LIB production was 61.8 kt and 247.6 kt, respectively. From 2000 to 2014, the popularization of mobile phones and laptops promoted the consumption of lithium and cobalt. After 2015, electric automobiles gradually became a major driving force for the growth of lithium and cobalt consumption. The increasing use of LIBs resulted in the growth of in-use stocks of lithium and cobalt from 0.03 kt and 0.2 kt in 2000 to 17.5 kt and 31.0 kt in 2018, respectively. Meanwhile, end-of-life (EOL) LIBs were rapidly generated, with the increase from 0.1 kt/yr to 110.7 kt/yr. In 2018, 0.4 kt of lithium and 3.1 kt of cobalt were recovered from these EOL LIBs in 2018, which provided 4.2% and 12.8% of the lithium and cobalt supplies for new LIBs, respectively. Besides, 1.1 kt of EOL LFP batteries were used in echelon utilization in 2018. Based on the results, some recommendations were proposed for the sustainable development and waste management of LIB industries, including encouraging the innovation of LIB technology and combining multiple technologies, strengthening closed-loop management of LIBs, and promoting echelon utilization of EOL LIBs.</p>

Abstract:Understanding cobalt criticality and availability is necessary as lithium-ion battery demand, particularly for electric vehicles, is projected to increase exponentially throughout the next decade. With these increases in demand, supply concentration and mining limitations could have a significant impact on cobalt-dependent firms, sectors, and emerging technologies. Increased recycling, cobalt refining capability, and possible substitution away from cobalt in high demand sectors form the basis of modeling scenarios; these scenarios are created to identify the implications of changes in the cobalt supply-demand balance to 2030. Based on these, cobalt faces a tight but not impossible short-term market, where recycling and additional cobalt sources should be pursued and will become increasingly important out to and past 2030.
Analysis of material flow among multiple phases of cobalt industrial chain based on a complex network

Abstract:In recent years, with the continuous growth of consumer electronic products and the vigorous development of the new energy vehicle industry, the demand for global cobalt resources has increased sharply. The increasing demand is putting enormous pressure on the sustainable development of cobalt resources and exposing them to the risk of supply shortages. At present, most of the researches on cobalt resources are limited to trade between countries or to resource flows within individual countries, and fail to consider the flow of cobalt resources from the international and domestic perspectives as a whole. To observe the cobalt resources in global flows and analyses cobalt resource dependence at the global and national levels, this article systematically combs the various cobalt element forms by using the concept of the industrial chain. Additionally, it constructs a trade-related global cobalt element material flow network model of each phase in the cobalt industrial chain, using the cobalt production data and products containing cobalt trade data in 2016, 2018 and 2020, based on complex network and material flow analysis. This article used network indicators to analyze the important trading countries (regions), and trading hubs for the cobalt. And then it used the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to measure the concentration of importing and exporting markets in each phase of the cobalt industrial chain. For the important trading countries (regions), this article further calculated the degree of resource dependence between industrial chain phases within each country (region) and classified them accordingly. The results showed that the important trading countries (regions) of cobalt resources have been occupied by specific countries in recent years. Most of the important trade hub countries (regions) for cobalt are the countries (regions) experiencing rapid economic development. The export trade has a higher degree of monopoly than import trade in the cobalt industrial chain. According to the degree of dependence between the industrial chain phases, the important trading countries (regions) can be divided into four categories, the overall dependence of the industrial chain phases in countries (regions) with higher levels of economic development will be deeper. According to the results, some suggestions were put forward for the sustainable development of cobalt in different countries, including extending the industrial chain, establishing and improving national recovery systems.

Abstract:Cobalt has excellent electrochemical, magnetic, and heat properties. As a strategic resource, it has been applied in many high-tech products. However, the recent rapid growth of the battery industry has substantially depleted cobalt resources, leading to a crisis of cobalt resource supply. The paper examines cobalt ore reserves and distribution, and the recent development and consumption of cobalt resources are summarized as well. In addition, the principles, advantages and disadvantages, and research status of various methods are discussed comprehensively. It can be concluded that the use of diverse sources (Cu-Co ores, Ni-Co ores, zinc plant residues, and waste cobalt products) for cobalt production should be enhanced to meet developmental requirements. Furthermore, in recovery technology, the pyro-hydrometallurgical process employs pyrometallurgy as the pretreatment to modify the phase structure of cobalt minerals, enhancing its recovery in the hydrometallurgical stage and facilitating high-purity cobalt production. Consequently, it represents a promising technology for future cobalt recovery. Lastly, based on the above conclusions, the prospects for cobalt are assessed regarding cobalt ore processing and sustainable cobalt recycling, for which further study should be conducted.

The Dynamic Evolution of the Material Flow of Lithium Resources in China

Abstract:As a strategic emerging mineral resource, lithium is widely used in new energy, new materials and other emerging industries. There exists a changing trend of the material flow, consumption and evolution of lithium resources in the market. Thus, this research constructed a material flow analysis system for lithium resources based on the trade correlation of the whole life cycle. The study used the material flow analysis method to analyze the supply, flow and stock of lithium resources in China from 2007 to 2020. The research shows that during that timeframe, China's cumulative consumption of lithium resources equivalent to lithium carbonate reached 309.9348 kt. The consumption of lithium in traditional and lithium electric fields increased from 14.3653 kt and 8.08228 kt in 2007 to 49.53125 kt and 90.75866 kt in 2020, respectively. From 2007 to 2011, the consumption of lithium in the traditional sector was greater than that in the lithium electric sector. From 2012 to 2020, with the innovation of network technology and the boom in the NEV market, the market for consumer lithium and power lithium grew rapidly, and the field of lithium with power batteries as the main driving force gradually became the major contributor to the consumption of lithium resources. With the rapid increase in the consumption demand for lithium resources, the supply structure of lithium resources in China has changed from domestic supply to international import. The external dependence of lithium resources has increased from 29.74% in 2007 to 70.75% in 2020. With increasing lithium consumption, the storage of lithium batteries increased from 20.69721 kt in 2007 to 341.6322 kt in 2020. At the same time, the scrap volume of lithium batteries increased rapidly, but the recycling volume of lithium resources was far lower than the scrap volume. The resource recycling potential is huge, and there is still a lot of room for the development of the sequential utilization of waste lithium-ion batteries.
Examining the Temporal Demand and Sustainability of Copper in China

Abstract:A comprehensive study is carried out to determine (1) the annual historical demand and supply, (2) the annual prospective demand, and (3) the carrying capacity and future sustainability of copper resources in China. The results of the first analysis show that both the demand and the supply have substantially increased since 2000 after remaining relatively minute for the period from 1950 to 2000. By 2015, the per capita total and domestic demands had reached 7.6 and 5.4 kg, respectively. The annual demand prospects suggest that the copper demand will peak in 2030 and either stabilize or marginally drop thereafter. This was found to be the case for all population variants and demand growth rates that were considered herein, with the exception of the "stable scenario". Under the considered scenarios, the domestic demand in the year 2050 is predicted to fall by 6.7-15 million metric tons (Mt), while the total demand will likely fall by 9.4-21.2 Mt. The projected drastic increase in the cumulative primary demand suggests that China should pursue more industrially sustainable options. If the current trends continue, demand will likely surpass even the projected reserve base of 2050 sometime from 2025 to 2035 unless necessary actions to change the course are initiated as soon as possible. Chinese efforts to promote recycling in recent decades have been admirable but are not sufficient to meet the primary demand, thus leaving a large proportion of the demand to be met using imports. Thus, to reduce the primary copper imports, it is desirable to increase recycling rates to 60-70%. The shortcomings of the domestic recycling industry include poor end-of-life collection and an elastic policy framework. These issues merit attention in the short term to increase the long-term sustainability of copper resources in China.
Resilience assessment of the cobalt supply chain in China under the impact of electric vehicles and geopolitical supply risks

Abstract:Cobalt, one of the essential new energy materials, is widely applied in many crucial industries. In recent years, the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to increased cobalt demand, and geopolitical changes have increased the risk of cobalt supply disruption. To investigate the impact of geopolitical risks and demand shocks of EVs on the cobalt supply chain system, we applied the system dynamics model to assess the cobalt supply chain resilience and construct four subsystems of price, production capacity, supply, and demand to explore the resilience mechanism of the cobalt supply chain. Through Vensim simulation experiments, three resilience enhancement measures from recycling technology, inventory, and material substitution under the impact of the EVs demand and geopolitical supply risks are used as model scenarios. The research results revealed that the cobalt supply chain is less resilient under the impact of EVs and geopolitical risks. The reduction of cobalt imports under geopolitical risks has a direct impact on cobalt prices and produces a superimposed effect. When a 20%, 50%, and 100% reduction in China's cobalt imports due to geopolitical events, the cobalt price rises from 2026 by 8.24%, 10.67%, and 15.01% in 2027, respectively, compared to the baseline scenario, to reach the maximum cobalt price in 2028. The improvement in recycling technology makes the Chinese cobalt supply chain more resilient, as evidenced by capacity growth. A 33% improvement in recovery technology, increasing cobalt supply capacity by 12.57% and relieving supply pressure by 16.47% under cobalt supply disruptions. Inventory is one of the apparent improvements in the cobalt supply chain to respond to shocks in EV demand. Material substitution improves resilience in both scenarios, but is less effective in supply disruptions under geopolitical risk shocks.

Abstract:Cobalt is considered a key metal in the energy transition, and demand is expected to increase substantially by 2050. This demand is for an important part because of cobalt use in (electric vehicle) batteries. This study investigated the environmental impacts of the production of cobalt and how these could change in the future. We modeled possible future developments in the cobalt supply chain using four variables: (v1) ore grade, (v2) primary market shares, (v3) secondary market shares, and (v4) energy transition. These variables are driven by two metal‐demand scenarios, which we derived from scenarios from the shared socioeconomic pathways, a "business as usual" (BAU) and a "sustainable development" (SD) scenario. We estimated future environmental impacts of cobalt supply by 2050 under these two scenarios using prospective life cycle assessment. We found that the environmental impacts of cobalt production could likely increase and are strongly dependent on the recycling market share and the overall energy transition. The results showed that under the BAU scenario, climate change impacts per unit of cobalt production could increase by 9% by 2050 compared to 2010, while they decreased by 28% under the SD scenario. This comes at a trade‐off to other impacts like human toxicity, which could strongly increase in the SD scenario (112% increase) compared to the BAU scenario (71% increase). Furthermore, we found that the energy transition could offset most of the increase of climate change impacts induced by a near doubling in cobalt demand in 2050 between the two scenarios.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is the key technology for climate change mitigation. The sustainability of LIB supply chain has caused widespread concern since the material utilization efficiency of LIB supply chain has not been well investigated. This study aims to fill this research gap by conducting a dynamic material flow analysis of lithium in China from 2015 to 2021. Results indicate that within the temporal boundary, lithium flow and in-use stock grew significantly in China due to the rapid development of the EV market, with lithium flow in domestic production of basic chemicals increasing by 614% to 100 kt, end-use consumption increasing by 160% to 35 kt, and in-use stock increasing by 62% to 195 kt. China has been a net importer of lithium, of which cumulative imports and exports were 343 kt and 169 kt, respectively. In addition, 103 kt of lithium was converted to inventories or was lost during the processing from 2015 to 2021. By optimizing inventory and processing, developing substitutes for lithium for non-battery applications, and improving lithium recycling, China's net import dependency of lithium could be reduced from 27%-86% to 0%-16%. Our study demonstrates that it is urgent to improve material utilization efficiency so that the lithium resource supply can be secured.
Recycling potential of cobalt metal from end-of-life new energy passenger vehicles in China

Abstract:The growing demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has resulted in a corresponding increase in demand for cobalt as a critical material. It is crucial to estimate the cobalt resource recycling potential of China's NEV industry to ensure a balance between the supply and demand for cobalt metal minerals. This article is based on using the historical data of the new energy passenger vehicle (NEPV) sales volume from 2013 to 2022 to estimate the NEPV sales volume from 2023 to 2035. On this basis, the Weibull distribution was used to analyse the different sales scenarios (low sales and high sales) of NEPVs in China, and the recycling potential of cobalt metal in NEPVs was evaluated under three battery life scenarios (8, 10 and 12 years) from 2023 to 2035. Based on the above scenarios, in 2035, the greatest recycling potential of cobalt is predicted to be 166.9 kilotonnes, with economic values of CNY 49.01-94.60 billion. Moreover, the extent to which the recycling potential of cobalt can cover the market demand for NEPVs was analysed. Our analysis concluded that recycling cobalt as a secondary supply has emerged as a necessary solution to supplement the primary supply, which can make a significant contribution to alleviating the pressure of the supply and demand.
Perspectives on Cobalt Supply through 2030 in the Face of Changing Demand

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery demand, particularly for electric vehicles, is projected to increase by over 300% throughout the next decade. With these expected increases in demand, cobalt (Co)-dependent technologies face the risk of significant impact from supply concentration and mining limitations in the short term. Increased extraction and secondary recovery form the basis of modeling scenarios that examine implications on Co supply to 2030. Demand for Co is estimated to range from 235 to 430 ktonnes in 2030. This upper bound on Co demand in 2030 corresponds to 280% of world refinery capacity in 2016. Supply from scheduled and unscheduled production as well as secondary production is estimated to range from 320 to 460 ktonnes. Our analysis suggests the following: (1) Co price will remain relatively stable in the short term, given that this range suggests even a supply surplus, (2) future Co supply will become more diversified geographically and mined more as a byproduct of nickel (Ni) over this period, and (3) for this demand to be met, attention should be paid to sustained investments in refined supply of Co and secondary recovery.

Abstract:Cobalt is a strategic and critical mineral whose demand is expected to grow rapidly. This study aims to provide a comprehensive summary of cobalt extraction and recovery research from 2012 to 2021 in the form of bibliometric analysis. The work was based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science) and carried out using the InCites of Clarivate for bibliometric data analysis and the software VOSviewer for science mapping. By analyzing a dataset of 4967 publications, the most influential journals, countries, authors, institutions, and publications were identified, and the keyword co-occurrence networks were mapped. The China mainland produced the most publications, while the USA had the highest average number of citations per publication and the UK was the most collaborative with other countries. The keyword analysis shows that the research hotspots gradually shifted over time from early means and methods for determination of cobalt in solution to recovery of cobalt from spent lithium batteries, smelting slag, copper-cobalt ore, etc. The research will be focused on further improvement and optimization of the separation, extraction, and recovery processes of cobalt from spent batteries in recent and future years, and three approaches were promoted to facilitate economization and industrialization of the processes in this field.
