Abstract:This study aims to model the temporal and spatial characteristics of end-of-life (EOL) power batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) in China. A Stanford estimation model is used, assuming that the lifetime of power batteries obeys a Weibull distribution. We collected the sales data for two types of power batteries used in four types of EVs from 2009 to 2018 in mainland China and predicted the sales data from 2019 to 2030 according to the Chinese government's plan. The results present a complete picture of EOL batteries in China: (1) the generation of retired power batteries in China is predicted from 2020 to 2036, including 112 k tonnes in 2020 and 708 k tonnes in 2030; (2) the potential economic value of retired batteries for echelon and recovery utilization is analyzed; and (3) the generation of retired power batteries in 20 provinces was estimated and compared with their collection station numbers. Considering the weight of different batteries and the service life increase caused by technology upgrades, our predictions for the quantity of retired batteries are lower and more accurate than others' predictions. Large-scale battery retirement will come later than previously anticipated. We should plan the number of recycling sites in main provinces based on the accurate retired amount

Abstract:A better understanding of the waste of end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) is a basis for their sustainable management. This study aims to estimate the waste of end-of-life EV batteries during 2006–2040 in China and to analyze the opportunities and challenges of subsequent utilization, based on a developed numerical model, real market data, and elaborately developed scenarios. The result shows that end-of-life batteries would increase from 0.1 to 7.8 thousand tons during 2012–2018, and then to 1500–3300 thousand tons in 2040. Of the waste streams, around 50% are estimated to be metal materials, representing great opportunities for battery recycling for material recovery. Economically, battery recycling for energy storage is estimated to create more economic benefits compared with that for material recovery solely (147.8 versus 76.9 billion US dollars). However, the supply of end-of-life batteries can hardly meet the demand for renewable energy storage in the near future, and a spatial mismatch of the supply and demand of energy storage capacity exists between the eastern and western regions in China. Accordingly, this study highlights national coordination for the rational layout of the collection, disassembly, and remanufacture facilities for the second use of end-of-life EV batteries in China.

Prediction of metal recovery potential of end-of-life NEV batteries in China based on GRA-BiLSTM

Abstract:As Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) sales continue to grow, end-of-life batteries have great potential for recycling in the future. In this study, a combined model based on Gray Relation Analysis and Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (GRA-BiLSTM) is proposed for predicting NEV sales, and the NEV battery life is modeled using the Weibull distribution. Then, the amount of end-of-life batteries, secondary utilization and metal recycling are calculated. The impact of end-of-life battery recycling on the supply and demand of key metals is studied. The results show that in 2040, the secondary utilization of end-of-life batteries in the Standard Growth Rate-Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Dominated-High Secondary Utilization rate scenario (SGR-LFPH) is 391.76 GWh. The recycling volumes of lithium, nickel and cobalt are 45,900 tons, 92,900 tons and 22,100 tons, respectively. In the Standard Growth Rate-lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide Battery Dominated-Low Secondary Utilization rate scenario (SGR-NCML), the recycling of lithium, nickel and cobalt is even greater, at 62,600 tons, 372,200 tons and 71,700 tons, respectively. End-of-life batteries recycling can reduce the demand for metals. However, as NEV sales continue to grow, the gap between metal supply and demand remains significant. The findings urge the Chinese government develop appropriate battery management strategies to increase the recycling rate of end-of-life batteries; and to encourage enterprises to research new types of batteries to resolve the conflict between supply and demand for metals.

Abstract:Cytokine imbalances especially between T helper type (Th) 1 and Th2 and tryptophan breakdown were reported to be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The hyperactive inflammatory response system could induce enhanced tryptophan breakdown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cytokine changes, tryptophan breakdown parameter changes and clinical parameters in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with normal controls. In the plasma of schizophrenic patients, Th1-specific interferon-γ was significantly higher (F = 7.485, p = 0.007) and Th2-specific interleukin (IL)-4 was significantly lower (F = 126.327, p < 0.0001). The Th1-related cytokine IL-2 was lower (F = 5.409, p = 0.021) but tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Th2-related IL-6 were higher (F = 95.004, p < 0.0001 and F = 408.176, p < 0.0001, respectively) in the plasma of schizophrenic patients. After 6 weeks of treatment, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly reduced (t = –3.762, p < 0.0001 and z = –2.668, p = 0.008). At the time of admission, plasma tryptophan concentrations were lower (F = 6.339, p = 0.012) in schizophrenic patients and were negatively correlated with the total positive symptoms score (r2 = -0.343, p = 0.004). After 6 weeks of medication, both plasma tryptophan and kynurenine concentrations were increased (t = –2.937, p = 0.005 and t = –3.214, p = 0.002, respectively). The findings of this study indicate a hyperactive pro-inflammatory response inducing a change in tryptophan metabolism that might be related to the development of positive symptoms in schizophrenia.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of new energy vehicles, in-use electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) are becoming an important component of urban mining. This paper analyzed the metal stocks in EVBs in China from 2009 to 2019 using a bottom-up method, which focused on the in-use stock of seven main metals, namely, nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium, copper, aluminum, and iron, in primary use stage and secondary use stage of three EVB types, namely, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery (NMC), lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), and lithium manganese oxide battery (LMO). It was found that the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) contributed to a dramatic increase in in-use metal stocks from 0.7 kt in 2009 to 1.1 Mt in 2019. To assess the increase, three scenarios simulating metal stocks in EVBs from 2020 to 2030 were analyzed, namely, baseline, NMC-dominated, and LFP-dominated, and results indicated that metal stocks will reach 20.6 Mt, 23.2 Mt, and 17.9 Mt, respectively, by 2030. Across the scenarios there is little proportional difference in metal stocks between the two use stages. The proportion of the three EVB types correlates to the development trend of EVB technology under each corresponding scenario. Besides, the in-use metal stocks in EVBs have high implied recycling potential and environmental benefit. The recycling potential of these seven metals is 1.0 Mt in 2019, and it will reach 20.0 Mt, 22.6 Mt, and 17.4 Mt, respectively, in 2030 under the three scenarios. The results reveal the current status and evolution characteristics of metal stocks in EVBs in China, and provide data for material flow analysis and life cycle management of EVBs.

Abstract:Considering the features of long term load forecasting are complicated, this paper proposes a generic neural network model that is able to adapt to and learn from amount of non-linear or imprecise rules, so it is a model with highly robustness. For avoiding the inflexibility of the generic neural network itself, many experiences and opinions of experts are introduced during the use, so that a comprehensive effect of different factors that influence the power load can be reflected. The generic algorithm is able to search precisely at global scope, and the neural network is able to fit well at local scope, both of which are chosen together by this paper, i.e. the generic neural network algorithm. In the simulation training of the model, data from 1990 to 2007 of 16 indexes are used, and experience and opinions of national regulation factors of primary, secondary and tertiary industries that are provided by experts are also followed, and the long term load forecasting is carried out by rolling annual extrapolation.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. China's lithium mines are highly dependant on imports, and the mitigating role of recycling new energy vehicle (NEV) batteries is not yet clear. In this research, a multifactor input GRA-BiLSTM forecasting model for NEV sales is proposed to predict the sales of NEVs under three scenarios from 2023 to 2030, and the number of end-of-life batteries in each year is calculated by the Weibull distribution. The results show that NEV sales in 2030 will reach 15.49 million units in the base scenario, with up to 10.5 Mt of lithium resources recovered from 2023 to 2030, reducing import dependance to 63% overall. Under each scenario, recycled batteries could play a role in reducing the value of lithium import dependance by at least 16%.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly being seen as part of the solution to address environmental issues related to fossil fuel use. At the forefront of the EV revolution is China where EV sales have witnessed a dramatic increase. A direct consequence of a larger number of EVs on the roads is the growth in retired batteries once they have reached the end of their useful life inside an EV. This increasing stockpile of retired batteries raises the question of whether and how they can be disposed of, reused, repurposed or recycled. In this paper we investigate under which circumstances the use of second life batteries in stationary energy storage systems in China can be profitable using an operational optimization model. Our results show that an EV battery could achieve a second life value of 785 CNY/kWh (116 USD/kWh) if it is purchased with a remaining capacity of 80% and being abandoned when the capacity reaches 50%. Profit margins for energy storage firms are reduced if the acquisition costs of second life batteries are considered. The price range for second life batteries is assumed to range between a lower limit of the 'Willing to sell' price from the perspective of EV owners and an upper limit being the 'Market evaluation' price based on battery condition and the market price for a new EV battery. It's found that when the remaining capacity in retirement is below 87%, the application of retired battery energy storage can achieve pareto improvement from the perspective of social welfare. In addition, it's estimated that the optimal remaining capacity in retirement would be 77%. Our results suggest that EV adoption rates can be improved if a second life market can be successfully established.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) battery is a crucial component of energy storage components for electric vehicles. However, the environmental impact of EVs battery is still not clear. Therefore, this paper establishes a cradle-to-cradle life cycle assessment (LCA) frame and clarifies the environmental impacts on the entire lifespan of EVs battery in China. Specifically, the environmental impact of battery production, battery use, and recycling & disposal stages are analyzed and measured. In addition, the carbon reduction potential of recycling and secondary use under a future electricity mix is estimated. Results show that: (1) The production stage of EVs battery with the carbon emission of 105 kgCO2-eq/kWh, which has the most significant impact on the environment. (2) In the recycling process, cascade utilization can reduce 1.536 kgCO2-eq/kWh carbon emission. In terms of recycling methods, hydrometallurgy can reduce the most carbon emission (13.3 kgCO2-eq/kWh), followed by the combined hydro-pyrometallurgical process (8.11 kgCO2-eq/kWh) and pyrometallurgy (0.57 kgCO2-eq/kWh). (3) Under the estimated electricity mix in 2030, 2040, and 2050, the carbon emission in battery production can be approximately reduced by 31.9 %, 45 %, and 48.1 %, respectively.
Recycling potential of cobalt metal from end-of-life new energy passenger vehicles in China

Abstract:The growing demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has resulted in a corresponding increase in demand for cobalt as a critical material. It is crucial to estimate the cobalt resource recycling potential of China's NEV industry to ensure a balance between the supply and demand for cobalt metal minerals. This article is based on using the historical data of the new energy passenger vehicle (NEPV) sales volume from 2013 to 2022 to estimate the NEPV sales volume from 2023 to 2035. On this basis, the Weibull distribution was used to analyse the different sales scenarios (low sales and high sales) of NEPVs in China, and the recycling potential of cobalt metal in NEPVs was evaluated under three battery life scenarios (8, 10 and 12 years) from 2023 to 2035. Based on the above scenarios, in 2035, the greatest recycling potential of cobalt is predicted to be 166.9 kilotonnes, with economic values of CNY 49.01-94.60 billion. Moreover, the extent to which the recycling potential of cobalt can cover the market demand for NEPVs was analysed. Our analysis concluded that recycling cobalt as a secondary supply has emerged as a necessary solution to supplement the primary supply, which can make a significant contribution to alleviating the pressure of the supply and demand.

Abstract:The rapid expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) in China will induce a potential imbalance in the demand and supply of critical metals, which emphasized the importance of recycling critical metals. Evaluating their stock and recycling potential is essential to the electrification transformation in the automobile industry and provides references to the overall national resource strategy. In this study, we identified the critical metals in the electrification transformation of the automobile industry, estimated the stock of critical metals from 2022 to 2050 under multiple scenarios in China, and assessed the recycling potential of critical metals in EVs as well as their economic value. The results show that China's passenger vehicles will reach 547.5–623.8 million in 2050. According to China's current energy conservation and emission reduction policies, fuel vehicle (FV) ownership will peak in 2042, at 488.2 million. If strict energy conservation and emission reduction policies are adopted, electric vehicle ownership will increase from 148.3 million to 293.9 million by 2050, leading to a rapid increase in the stock of critical metals. The total stock of key critical metals under the scenario with stringent policies will be 29.27 million tons in 2050, 10.55 million higher compared to the scenario with no ban on fuel vehicles. Based on our results, the recycling of critical metals can be an effective option for the inadequate critical metal supply, especially given the policy context of increasingly expanding EV ownership in the near-term future.

Abstract:Vehicle electrification stands as a pivotal catalyst for effecting a low-carbon transition within the transportation sector. End-of-life (EoL) battery treatment, which is mainly aimed at facilitating material recycling, provides considerable co-benefit in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study assesses the life-cycle GHG emissions from battery production, and examines the impact of three EoL battery treatment strategies: second use, regeneration, and recycling. Prospective scenarios of GHG emissions from electric vehicle battery production in China are further provided. The results show that under the Business as Usual (BAU) scenario, GHG emissions peak at 36 million tons in 2030, with 18 million tons for LFP and 18 million tons for NCM, and decrease to 11 million tons in 2060, with 4 million tons for LFP and 7 million tons for NCM. GHG emissions have more reduction potential as the collection rate increases and the proportion of different strategies applied changes. In a scenario with improved collection rates, GHG emissions would be reduced by 21% in 2060 compared to BAU. In a prioritized regeneration scenario, GHG emissions can be reduced by 32% in 2060, with 64% of lithium resources being supplied by regenerated batteries. In a prioritized second use scenario, GHG emissions can be reduced by 104% in 2060, which involves replacing 27 kilotons of lithium input and mitigating 13 million tons of GHG emissions related to the energy storage system. In light of these findings, we advocate for policy recommendations aimed at fostering the advancement of EoL battery treatment technologies and expediting the transformation of battery manufacturing processes towards carbon neutrality.
Governance strategies for end-of-life electric vehicle battery recycling in China: A tripartite evolutionary game analysis

Abstract:End-of-life (EOL) electric vehicle (EV) batteries have both economic and environmental benefits if recycled in an environmentally friendly manner while they may cause environmental pollution if treated improperly. China is currently working hard to promote the development of a circular economy by EOL EV battery recycling. However, conflicts of interest among electric vehicle manufacturers (EVMs), consumers, and the government often hinder efficient recycling. This study constructs a tripartite evolutionary game model under the condition of bounded rationality, analyzes the evolutionary stability strategy of three participants, and combines with numerical simulation to explore the feasible governance strategies of EOL EV battery recycling. The results show that four evolutionary stable strategies (ESSs) correspond to the three stages of the EOL EV battery recycling industry: early stage, development stage, and maturity stage. In the early stage, the punishment strategy is more critical to motivate EVMs and consumers to actively participate in battery recycling. The subsidy mechanisms can influence the strategic choices of the three participants, but the excessive subsidy is not conducive to the sustainable development of the EOL EV battery industry. In addition, when the industry matures, the government will gradually decrease intervention, thereby realizing the development path of EOL EV battery recycling from exogenous government supervision to endogenous profit drive.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the most essential power source for electric vehicles today due to having the advantages of no memory, large capacity, and high energy density. Additionally, with the maturity of LIBs and the promotion of a series of supporting policies, China's electric vehicle industry has undergone extensive changes. This study takes the batteries of 26 kinds of pure electric passenger vehicles and 12 kinds of plug-in hybrid electric passenger vehicles produced and sold in mainland China from 2013 to 2018 as the research objects. The theoretical scrap number of electric passenger vehicles is calculated by the Weibull distribution, and then the scrap vehicles are classified according to the power battery type. It is estimated that by 2025, the numbers of spent pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles will reach 367,242 and 116,923, respectively. LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) and LiFePO4 (LFP) are the two main battery types in electric passenger vehicles. The number of spent pure electric passenger vehicles with LFP will reach a peak of 78,719 in 2023, while that with NCM will reach a peak of 287,211 in 2024. The numbers of spent plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) equipped with LFP and NCM batteries have increased quickly and will reach maximum values of 10,613 and 113,297 in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Then, the recovered amounts of the main metals in the cathode materials are calculated by different methods. Corresponding suggestions are put forward at the end of the article.

Abstract:With the rapid development of China's automobile industry, the surge in the number of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) has put great pressure on the environment. On the other hand, ELVs contain multiple recyclable metal resources and can be regarded as an important source of urban mining. In order to explore the potential of secondary resources supplies from urban mines in the automotive industry, considering different policy conditions, this study not only forecasts China's recyclable metal resources from 2021 to 2030 at the national level, but also introduces two indicators of area and population, focusing on the differences in provincial distribution. Combined with the characteristics of each province, the gap between future demand for vehicle scrap recycling and the current status of China's ELV management is analyzed. The results show that although the extension of vehicle service life in the future will effectively reduce the number of ELVs, there will be an obvious imbalance of ELV between provinces by 2030 due to the different development conditions of provinces. In the future, considering the insufficient landfills and high disposal costs in relatively developed areas, ELV recycling channels should be set up in multiple geographical locations within China, so that the pressure of controlling total domestic ELV recycling can be eased, as well as the governance of dismantling enterprises.

Abstract:China is actively promoting the transition from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve its goal of carbon peaking and neutrality. However, this shift will result in a continuous increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries for EVs, leading to a significant rise in demand for cobalt, further exacerbating the risk of cobalt resource supply in China. The study considered three electrification levels, three battery technology routes, two battery capacities, two dynamic battery lifetimes, and two recycling efficiencies, resulting in 36 demand scenarios and 72 recycling scenarios while increasing the precision of the study to the inter-provincial level. The results indicate that China's cobalt demand will be huge, peaking around 2039, with annual demand ranging from 78.29 kt to 359.40 kt, and the current production capacity and reserves are completely inadequate to meet the growing cobalt demand. In some specific scenarios, secondary cobalt demand remains higher than or close to primary cobalt demand between 2035 and 2040, and secondary cobalt demand becomes a significant component affecting total cobalt demand. In terms of recycling, closed-loop recycling can cover 45.1%–59.3% of annual cobalt demand in 2039. With rapid recovery efficiency, cobalt recovery in multiple scenarios can already fully meet primary cobalt demand, and the recovery potential is enormous. Furthermore, adopting low-cobalt battery technology, which extends battery life and reduces battery replacement in EVs, can significantly reduce secondary cobalt demand. At the provincial level, cobalt demand and recycling in China are unevenly distributed, with provinces with high demand for cobalt showing a trend of shifting from inland areas in the northwest to central and eastern coastal areas. In contrast, the areas with the largest recycling volume remain in the north. Therefore, accelerating the promotion of low cobalt and long-life battery technology and improving recycling efficiency can greatly alleviate the cobalt supply risk in China's electrification process. Additionally, specific spatial layouts should be given attention to ensure the sound development of China's EV industry through national coordination so that the double carbon target can be accomplished on time or even ahead of schedule.

The role of nickel recycling from nickel-bearing batteries on alleviating demand-supply gap in China's industry of new energy vehicles

Abstract:China has become the global largest country in application of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and installed capacity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the contradiction between the demand and supply of nickel used as the typical critical resource for manufacturing LIBs, is ever-increasing aggravated especially under the tendency of cobalt-free nickel-rich. This research, hereby, predicts the nickel recycling potential from end-of-life NEVs under three sales growth scenarios by linear regression and Weibull distribution, and investigates the role of recovered nickel during closing nickel loop quantitatively. It is predicted that China's NEVs sales can achieve approximately 3800 thousand units, and the quantities of end-of-life NEVs can reach 2300 thousand units under the higher growth rate (HGR) in 2030. If the spent nickel-bearing batteries (NBBs) can be fully recycled, 44.5 Mt of nickel can be recovered, which will account for nearly one third of the total demand for manufacturing NBBs. The results indicate that the recovered nickel from spent NBBs can play a vital role during closing nickel loop in the industry of NEVs in China.

Abstract:With the development of the electric vehicle industry, the number of power batteries has increased dramatically. Establishing a recycling EOL (end-of-life) battery network for secondary use is an effective way to solve resource shortage and environmental pollution. However, existing networks are challenging due to the high uncertainty of EOL batteries, e.g., quantity and quality, resulting in a low recycling rate of the recovery network. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a stochastic programming approach for recovery network design under uncertain conditions of EOL batteries. Firstly, a multi-objective model for battery recovery network is established, considering carbon emissions and economic benefits. Secondly, a stochastic programming approach is proposed to clarify the model. Subsequently, the genetic algorithm is employed to solve the proposed model. Finally, a recovery network case of Region T is given to verify the credibility and superiority of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed model reduces carbon emissions by 20 metric tons and increases overall economic benefits by 10 million yuan in Region T compared to the deterministic model. Furthermore, the two portions affecting the optimization results are also discussed to provide a reference for reducing carbon emissions and improving economic efficiency in recycling networks.

Abstract:Electric vehicles, which are primarily powered by lithium-ion batteries, have gained much attention as the future of transportation for their environmental and economic benefits. However, the current economy of lithium-ion battery management is quite linear. A circular economy with reusing and end-of-life recycling of lithium-ion batteries, would reduce the social and environmental costs associated with the mining of metals, decelerate the depletion of natural resources, and prevent the improper management that often accompanies disposal. This research suggests improvements to the end-of-life management of lithium-ion batteries in the US, considering current and emerging recycling technologies, current collection and transportation infrastructure, current reuse applications, and an analysis of the current regulatory policies in place. Along with providing a comprehensive overview of these topics, this research compiles and provides a set of actionable End-of-Life (EOL) management recommendations for the US on policy, infrastructure, and technology.
