Abstract:The efficient collection of spent batteries is important for the recycling of power batteries and the sustainable advancement of electric vehicles (EVs). This study introduces and evaluates 14 power battery collection models, encompassing single-channel, dual-channel, and triple-channel scenarios, which encapsulate the dynamics of competition, cooperation, and co-opetition among key stakeholders. Employing Stackelberg game theory and simulation analysis, this study assesses the economic and environmental benefits of these models, with particular attention to the impact of consumer environmental awareness and competition intensity. Findings indicate that the collaborative collection model involving battery manufacturers, EV companies, and third-party recyclers (Model MVTP) delivers superior economic outcomes, with benefits ranging from 20.3 to 20.31 billion RMB. Meanwhile, the competitive three-party collection model (Model M-V-TP) stands out for its environmental benefits, achieving collection rates between 14.95 % and 25.65 %. Intriguingly, while competition intensity does not influence the outcomes of single-channel models, it diminishes both economic and environmental benefits in dual- and triple-channel scenarios. Moreover, enhanced consumer environmental awareness consistently elevates the economic benefits of all models, though its effect on environmental benefits varies—enhancing collection rates in single- and dual-channel models but detrimentally impacting the triple-channel model.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve the urgent problem to construct a recycling network of decommissioned batteries of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and clarify the recycling entities that will be responsible for its reverse logistics (RL) process. We consider the third-party recycling entities to develop a recycling network and conduct a case-study of Xi'an, a key industry of EVs in China to provide a reference for the government and enterprises to develop recycling plans. We scientifically optimize our recycling network, which will have a significant impact on the environmental and economic benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) in Xi'an in the future. Specifically, we consider the costs of transportation, construction, operation, recycling, packaging, and emission, as well as the profits achieved through sales revenue and subsidy offerings. We collect the actual data of potential facility locations in Xi'an, predict the quantity of decommissioned batteries in the future, and develop a fuzzy-based model to solve the optimal results of battery traveling path and distribution in the recycling process network. Our results show that with the rapid growth of the number of decommissioned batteries, third-party revenues will reach about 53.08 billion by 2035. When the facilities split the recycling process load appropriately, the network has increase in revenue while the utilization rate of facilities will decrease. We expect that splitting will be a major trend in the future development of recycling network in Xi'an. Finally, a sensitivity analysis finds that with the environmentally conscious and safe operation of recycling, the negative impact on the third-party enterprises' revenue will be small. Our proposed methodology can serve as a critical framework for other cities and governments to plan their recycling networks and formulate regulations, reflecting on the realistic projection of the scale of decommissioned batteries of EVs and the potential siting and sizing of the recycling facilities.

Temporal and Spatial Analysis for End-of-life Power Batteries from Electric Vehicles in China

Abstract:This study aims to model the temporal and spatial characteristics of end-of-life (EOL) power batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) in China. A Stanford estimation model is used, assuming that the lifetime of power batteries obeys a Weibull distribution. We collected the sales data for two types of power batteries used in four types of EVs from 2009 to 2018 in mainland China and predicted the sales data from 2019 to 2030 according to the Chinese government's plan. The results present a complete picture of EOL batteries in China: (1) the generation of retired power batteries in China is predicted from 2020 to 2036, including 112 k tonnes in 2020 and 708 k tonnes in 2030; (2) the potential economic value of retired batteries for echelon and recovery utilization is analyzed; and (3) the generation of retired power batteries in 20 provinces was estimated and compared with their collection station numbers. Considering the weight of different batteries and the service life increase caused by technology upgrades, our predictions for the quantity of retired batteries are lower and more accurate than others' predictions. Large-scale battery retirement will come later than previously anticipated. We should plan the number of recycling sites in main provinces based on the accurate retired amount

Abstract:Considering the features of long term load forecasting are complicated, this paper proposes a generic neural network model that is able to adapt to and learn from amount of non-linear or imprecise rules, so it is a model with highly robustness. For avoiding the inflexibility of the generic neural network itself, many experiences and opinions of experts are introduced during the use, so that a comprehensive effect of different factors that influence the power load can be reflected. The generic algorithm is able to search precisely at global scope, and the neural network is able to fit well at local scope, both of which are chosen together by this paper, i.e. the generic neural network algorithm. In the simulation training of the model, data from 1990 to 2007 of 16 indexes are used, and experience and opinions of national regulation factors of primary, secondary and tertiary industries that are provided by experts are also followed, and the long term load forecasting is carried out by rolling annual extrapolation.

Abstract:With the massive number of end-of-life (EOL) electric vehicle (EV) power batteries, their effective collection and recycling is a pressing issue. In the context of carbon emission reduction, this study considers the EOL power battery echelon utilization and material recycling from the perspective of a closed-loop supply chain. The optimal collection and low-carbon decisions are derived from the three most common and practical recycling scenarios: (1) the retailer collects EOL power batteries, (2) the comprehensive battery utilization enterprise collects EOL power batteries, (3) the retailer and comprehensive battery utilization enterprise co-collect EOL power batteries. We obtain the equilibrium outcomes of the three recycling models by solving a Stackelberg game and investigate the EV manufacturer's optimal collection decision by comparing the different collection models. We further analyzed the impacts of exogenous parameters on carbon emissions reduction and the optimal collection models by numerical analysis. This study contributes theoretically to research on closed-loop supply chains of EV power battery recycling and provides a reference for practitioners under different recycling scenarios to make optimal collection and low-carbon decisions. Specifically, the optimal low-carbon level, EV market return rate and all members' profits are negatively correlated with the initial carbon emission. The optimal low-carbon level first increases and then decreases with the improvement of the carbon trading price. When the collection competition coefficient is small, the co-collection model is optimal for EV manufacturing profitability and carbon emissions reduction. When the collection competition is above a threshold, the co-collection model is inferior, and a single-channel collection model should be selected according to the collection incentive.

Abstract:<p>Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly being seen as part of the solution to address environmental issues related to fossil fuel use. At the forefront of the EV revolution is China where EV sales have witnessed a dramatic increase. A direct consequence of a larger number of EVs on the roads is the growth in retired batteries once they have reached the end of their useful life inside an EV. This increasing stockpile of retired batteries raises the question of whether and how they can be disposed of, reused, repurposed or recycled. In this paper we investigate under which circumstances the use of second life batteries in stationary energy storage systems in China can be profitable using an operational optimization model. Our results show that an EV battery could achieve a second life value of 785 CNY/kWh (116 USD/kWh) if it is purchased with a remaining capacity of 80% and being abandoned when the capacity reaches 50%. Profit margins for energy storage firms are reduced if the acquisition costs of second life batteries are considered. The price range for second life batteries is assumed to range between a lower limit of the 'Willing to sell' price from the perspective of EV owners and an upper limit being the 'Market evaluation' price based on battery condition and the market price for a new EV battery. It's found that when the remaining capacity in retirement is below 87%, the application of retired battery energy storage can achieve pareto improvement from the perspective of social welfare. In addition, it's estimated that the optimal remaining capacity in retirement would be 77%. Our results suggest that EV adoption rates can be improved if a second life market can be successfully established.</p>

Abstract:A better understanding of the waste of end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) is a basis for their sustainable management. This study aims to estimate the waste of end-of-life EV batteries during 2006–2040 in China and to analyze the opportunities and challenges of subsequent utilization, based on a developed numerical model, real market data, and elaborately developed scenarios. The result shows that end-of-life batteries would increase from 0.1 to 7.8 thousand tons during 2012–2018, and then to 1500–3300 thousand tons in 2040. Of the waste streams, around 50% are estimated to be metal materials, representing great opportunities for battery recycling for material recovery. Economically, battery recycling for energy storage is estimated to create more economic benefits compared with that for material recovery solely (147.8 versus 76.9 billion US dollars). However, the supply of end-of-life batteries can hardly meet the demand for renewable energy storage in the near future, and a spatial mismatch of the supply and demand of energy storage capacity exists between the eastern and western regions in China. Accordingly, this study highlights national coordination for the rational layout of the collection, disassembly, and remanufacture facilities for the second use of end-of-life EV batteries in China.

However, the traditional subsidy mechanism is not effective in the current recycling market. Moreover, it is not conducive for guiding the EV industry to reduce dependence on the governmental financial support. As the reward-penalty mechanism has been successfully applied in similar fields, such as the recycling of waste portable batteries, it is expected to become a feasible alternative policy to promote the recycling of retired EV batteries. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the social-economic-environmental impacts of recycling retired EV batteries under reward-penalty mechanisms by developing a Stackelberg game theoretical model. Three scenarios are proposed and compared: S1 no policy intervention, S2 subsidy mechanism, and S3 reward-penalty mechanism. The obtained results show that:(i) Compared with the subsidy mechanism, the reward-penalty mechanism presents greater effects on recycling rate and the social welfare; (2) Under the subsidy mechanism, consumer surplus and the profit of EV manufacturer are two main driving factors of the social welfare. Under the reward-penalty mechanism, the reduced environmental burden tends to be another key contribution; (3) A relatively low minimum recycling rate favors the environmental benefit, consumer surplus and profit of EV manufacturer, while a relatively high minimum recycling rate is beneficial to reduce both the policy implementation cost and environmental burden caused by untreated EV batteries.</p>

Abstract:Electric vehicles must be widely accepted because of environmental concerns and carbon restrictions. Previous research has looked at consumer policy preferences and their influence on electric vehicle adoption. However, none have investigated the impact of policies linked to battery recycling on electric vehicle adoption. This study used a discrete choice model (the panel-data mixed logit model) to evaluate 552 actual consumer choice data from Southwest China collected via an online questionnaire. Our results indicate that (1) 75% of respondents feel that electric vehicles enhance the environment and are eager to embrace them. However, the lack of strong recycling policies may hinder their adoption of electric vehicles. Specifically, the four battery recycling policies significantly impact electric vehicle adoption. (2) Consumers appreciate producer-oriented incentives more than consumer-oriented incentives to a lesser extent, such as mandated battery recycling policies and electric vehicle battery flow tracing policies. (3) Consumers place a larger willingness to pay on charging station density than vehicle attributes. (4) Regarding consumer heterogeneity, the usual young group in higher-rated cities prefers electric vehicles, while customers who own a car are more inclined to buy electric vehicles. Finally, more management insights and policy recommendations are provided based on these findings to help government and producer policymakers.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of new energy vehicles, in-use electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) are becoming an important component of urban mining. This paper analyzed the metal stocks in EVBs in China from 2009 to 2019 using a bottom-up method, which focused on the in-use stock of seven main metals, namely, nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium, copper, aluminum, and iron, in primary use stage and secondary use stage of three EVB types, namely, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery (NMC), lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), and lithium manganese oxide battery (LMO). It was found that the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) contributed to a dramatic increase in in-use metal stocks from 0.7 kt in 2009 to 1.1 Mt in 2019. To assess the increase, three scenarios simulating metal stocks in EVBs from 2020 to 2030 were analyzed, namely, baseline, NMC-dominated, and LFP-dominated, and results indicated that metal stocks will reach 20.6 Mt, 23.2 Mt, and 17.9 Mt, respectively, by 2030. Across the scenarios there is little proportional difference in metal stocks between the two use stages. The proportion of the three EVB types correlates to the development trend of EVB technology under each corresponding scenario. Besides, the in-use metal stocks in EVBs have high implied recycling potential and environmental benefit. The recycling potential of these seven metals is 1.0 Mt in 2019, and it will reach 20.0 Mt, 22.6 Mt, and 17.4 Mt, respectively, in 2030 under the three scenarios. The results reveal the current status and evolution characteristics of metal stocks in EVBs in China, and provide data for material flow analysis and life cycle management of EVBs.

Enhanced recycling network for spent e-bicycle batteries: A case study in Xuzhou, China

Abstract:Electric bicycles (e-bicycles) are a primary means of commuting in China because of their light weight, speed, and low maintenance costs. Owing to short service life and environmental pollution hazards, recycling and reuse of e-bicycle batteries has always been a focus of industry and academia. As a typical case of both production and use of large electric bicycles, 113 major sellers, 378 corporate and individual buyers, 147 large e-bicycle repair centers, and 1317 e-bicycle owners in Xuzhou City were investigated in order to understand the sales, use, recycling, and disposal of spent e-bicycle batteries. The findings show that the existing distempered recycling system is the main limitation of spent battery recovery, and the actual recovery rate of spent batteries is lower than the estimated output (QW) for the years 2011-2014. Electric bicycle sellers play a fundamental role in the collection of spent batteries in Xuzhou, accounting for 42.3±8.3% of all batteries recovered. The widespread use of lithium batteries in recent years has resulted in a reduction in spent battery recycling because of lower battery prices. Furthermore, consumer preferences are another important factor affecting the actual recovery rate according to survey results evaluated using canonical correspondence analysis. In this paper, we suggest that a reverse logistics network system for spent battery recycling should be established in the future; in addition, enhancing producer responsibility, increasing publicity, raising of public awareness, developing green public transport, and reducing dependence on e-bicycles also should be pursued. This study seeks to provide guidance for planning construction and management policies for an effective spent battery recycling system in China and other developing countries.

Abstract:The Forkhead Box f1 (Foxf1) transcription factor (previously known as HFH-8 or Freac-1) is expressed in the septum transversum and splanchnic (visceral) mesoderm and is required for proper development of gut-derived organs. Sequence comparisons of mouse and human Foxf1 genes have revealed highly conserved DNA sequences located within the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter region and the 400-nucleotide regulatory element located 1 kb 3′ to the Foxf1 gene (3′RE). To examine their transcriptional activity during mouse embryonic development, we generated transgenic mice in which the expression of the β-galactosidase transgene was controlled by the -2.7-kb Foxf1 promoter region, the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter region, or the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter region fused to the 3′RE. The -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter sequences induced appropriate transgene expression in the midgut and developing intestine, whereas the -2.7-kb Foxf1 promoter region was transcriptionally inactive. Addition of 3′RE to the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter restored proper transgene expression in the foregut, liver, and lung mesenchyme and prevented ectopic transgene expression in the developing nervous system. Cotransfection studies demonstrated that FoxA2 protein bound to the 3′RE region (+4506/+4529 bp) and was sufficient to inhibit expression of the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter. Furthermore, C/EBPβ and HNF-6 proteins bound to the 3′RE region (+4647/+4694 bp) and provided synergistic transcriptional activation of the -5.3-kb Foxf1 promoter in cotransfection assays. These studies demonstrated that the conserved Foxf1 3′RE region is essential for proper tissue-specific regulation of the Foxf1 promoter region during mouse embryogenesis.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of electric vehicles in China, their benefits should be scientifically identified to support the industry development. Although the life cycle benefits of electric vehicles have been analyzed worldwide, the recycling phase has not been fully studied yet, especially in China. Actually, electric vehicle recycling is becoming more and more important because of the increasing demand of materials. Therefore, this study focuses on the economic and environmental benefits of electric vehicle recycling in China. Based on the technology adopted by leading enterprises, the gross income and reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are calculated to reveal the benefits. The life cycle economic and environmental impacts of recycling equipment are not included. The results indicate that the gross income per electric vehicle recycled is about 473.9 dollars, and the reductions of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are about 25.6GJ and 4.1t CO(2)eq, respectively. Furthermore, the environmental benefits per technology cost are about 241.3 MJ/dollar and 36.3 kg CO(2)eq/dollar. The recycled metals are the major source of both economic and environmental benefits at present due to the huge amount, but the recycled cathode active materials will be more valuable with the development of traction batteries.

Abstract:Global climate change has prompted all sectors of society to take urgent action to reduce carbon emissions. Electric vehicles are the key to low-carbon transportation transformation, but their popularity has led to difficulties in disposing of used batteries. Improper handling will pollute the environment and violate the original goal of promoting low-carbon practices. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a sustainable battery-recycling and disposal system. This study uniquely incorporates the concept of battery echelon utilization into its analytical framework using a Stackelberg game model, exploring the equilibrium strategies for stakeholders in a closed-loop supply chain under carbon emission constraints. We analyzed the impact of multiple factors in the recycling process, as well as the influence of digital technology, on enterprise pricing, recycling efficiency, and the choice of recycling channels. The study found that the market pricing of batteries and electric vehicles is not influenced by recycling participants, but is instead related to the application of digital technology. Numerical simulations further reveal that the battery's echelon utilization rate and carbon emission limit policies jointly motivate enterprises to be more proactive in recycling. In the joint recycling model, battery suppliers can achieve more substantial profit growth compared to electric vehicle manufacturers, providing new insights and directions for innovation and the development of collaborative models within the supply chain.

Abstract:In recent years, new energy vehicles (NEVs) have taken the world by storm. A large number of NEV batteries have been scrapped, and research on NEV battery recycling is important for promoting the sustainable development of NEVs. Battery recycling is an important aspect of the sustainable development of NEVs. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the current status of research on NEV battery recycling from a new perspective using bibliometric methods and visualization software. This study shows that research targeting the recycling of NEV batteries is growing rapidly, and collaborative networks exist among researchers from different countries, institutions, and fields. The focus of research has shifted from lead-acid batteries to lithium batteries, and the supply chain and circular economy related to NEV battery recycling is an emerging research hotspot. Based on our analysis, we propose that the government should establish policies to improve the recycling networks at the collection stage and provide subsidies to attract consumers. Enterprises should develop low-cobalt and cobalt-free technologies, utilize green solvents, and develop new battery swap modes. The establishment of an information platform is conducive to the further development of collaborative networks.

The results are as follows: (1) Deposit policy has a greater battery recycling rate and lower environmental impact than fund policy, so the best trade-in mode is with the EV manufacturer as recycling entity; (2) Battery supplier and EV manufacturer gain more from the fund policy when recycling themselves, whereas external recycler prefers the deposit policy; (3) Battery supplier recycling under ‘high deposit-high subsidy’ is more likely to promote social welfare, while EV manufacturer recycling under ‘high deposit-low subsidy’ will help the government balance revenue and expenditure.

Abstract:Cytokine imbalances especially between T helper type (Th) 1 and Th2 and tryptophan breakdown were reported to be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The hyperactive inflammatory response system could induce enhanced tryptophan breakdown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cytokine changes, tryptophan breakdown parameter changes and clinical parameters in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with normal controls. In the plasma of schizophrenic patients, Th1-specific interferon-γ was significantly higher (F = 7.485, p = 0.007) and Th2-specific interleukin (IL)-4 was significantly lower (F = 126.327, p < 0.0001). The Th1-related cytokine IL-2 was lower (F = 5.409, p = 0.021) but tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Th2-related IL-6 were higher (F = 95.004, p < 0.0001 and F = 408.176, p < 0.0001, respectively) in the plasma of schizophrenic patients. After 6 weeks of treatment, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly reduced (t = –3.762, p < 0.0001 and z = –2.668, p = 0.008). At the time of admission, plasma tryptophan concentrations were lower (F = 6.339, p = 0.012) in schizophrenic patients and were negatively correlated with the total positive symptoms score (r2 = -0.343, p = 0.004). After 6 weeks of medication, both plasma tryptophan and kynurenine concentrations were increased (t = –2.937, p = 0.005 and t = –3.214, p = 0.002, respectively). The findings of this study indicate a hyperactive pro-inflammatory response inducing a change in tryptophan metabolism that might be related to the development of positive symptoms in schizophrenia.
Consumer preference and willingness-to-pay for formal recycling of electric vehicle batteries: A discrete choice experiment in China

Abstract:The burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market poses a substantial challenge to battery recycling systems, yet understanding EV battery recycling behavior from the demand side remains limited. Previous studies have analyzed perceptual or attitudinal factors, neglecting the observable attributes of EV battery recycling. To this end, we proposed a discrete choice model to investigate the differences between formal and informal recycling behaviors, identifying consumer preferences and willingness to pay. By analyzing 1190 sample data collected from Chongqing, China, we find that: (1) The formal recycling market exhibits greater sensitivity to prices compared to the informal recycling market. (2) The formal recycling market favors recycling by EV battery producers, whereas the informal recycling market shows the least preference for recycling by automobile producers. (3) Door-to-door recycling services are the most effective in facilitating the transition from informal to formal recycling markets for EV batteries. (4) Capacity subsidy policies outperform one-time fixed subsidy policies in incentivizing formal recycling. (5) The formal recycling market for EV batteries necessitates "traceability to the recycling outlet", as opposed to being untraceable. (6) The high-awareness group exhibits greater sensitivity to government policies compared to those with lower environmental concerns and less knowledge of EV battery recycling.
