Abstract:This paper describes the structural layout and physical mechanism of the nacelle anti-icing system (NAIS) that is being deployed in a commercial aircraft. Based on the supplied heat above the requested heat principle, the critical design points (CDP) and corresponding heat flux with the NAIS are determined for both of dry and wet surface conditions. The droplet impinging collection efficiency for the NAIS is calculated in the frame of the two-fluid model, which is widely used in computational fluid dynamics for modeling multiphase flow. In the procedure the methods used to calculate droplet impinging collection efficiency in the wing anti-icing system and data similarity principle are also adopted. Under the wet surface conditions, some ice on the nacelle is built up, but the ice accretion must be below a particular thickness, which can be accepted by the ANIS design, or called as maximum ice accretion. Then commercial software, VSAERO/ICE, is used to predict the ice accretion in the NAIS. The computational results indicate the NAIS designed for the commercial aircraft is satisfied with the specified requirements, even under the worst conditions (CDP).
