Abstract:Signal waveform modulation multi-level (SWML) read-only discs employ sub-lands/sub-pits to achieve multi levels. However, the tracking error signal derived from the conventional differential phase detection (DPD) method deteriorates in the SWML read-only disc owing to sub-lands/sub-pits inserted in the conventional pits/lands. To solve this problem, a new DPD method, which employs a signal adjuster and a phase regenerator, is proposed. The experimental results show that the tracking error signal derived from the new DPD method has better characteristics of uniformity and signal-to-noise ratio than that derived from the conventional DPD method in the SWML read-only disc.

Abstract:A novel read channel for signal waveform modulation multi-level disc is presented in this paper.This read channel employs timing recovery system and partial response maximum likelihood detector.Compared to the previous read channel composed of level detection and run-length detection,the present read channel shows superiority in capacity increase and robust performance.Especially,relying on the partial response maximum likelihood detection,lower bit error rate can be obtained.

Abstract:Signal waveform modulation is a novel multi-level method and can achieve higher recording density than the amplitude multi-level modulation. Affected by multi-level modulation, the tracking error signal generated by the conventional differential phase detection (DPD) method deteriorates in the signal waveform modulation multi-level (SWML) disc. In the paper, a new tracking error signal detection method called the amplitude-sampling DPD (AS-DPD) method is proposed. The experimental results show that the characteristics of the tracking error signal generated by the AS-DPD method are better than that of the DPD signal in the SWML disc.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe an improved adaptive partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) method combining modulation code for signal waveform modulation multi-level disc. This improved adaptive PRML method employs partial response equalizer and adaptive viterbi detector combining modulation code. Compared with the traditional adaptive PRML detector, the improved PRML detector additionally employs illogical sequence detector and corrector. Illogical sequence detector and corrector can avoid the appearance of illogical sequences effectively, which do not follow the law of modulation code for signal waveform modulation multi-level disc, and obtain the correct sequences. We implement the improved PRML detector using a DSP and an FPGA chip. The experimental results show good performance. The higher efficient and lower complexity can be obtained by using the improved PRML method than by using the previous PRML method. Meanwhile, resource utilization of the improved PRML detector is not changed, but the bit error rate (BER) is reduced by more than 20%.

Abstract:A new kind of multi-level recordable disc is presented in this paper. By improving the recording control signal in DVD-R/RW burning process, a Multi-level disc with signal waveform modulation can be achieved. The multi-level recording method increases the recording density but also the channel noise. The optimally designed partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) equalizer is effective in recovering channel symbol, and the original error rate reach 10E-4. This kind of multi-level method can be used for the purpose such as increasing the capacity of disc, hiding data and burning disc identification information etc.

Abstract:A high-efficient and novel varying-level multilevel run-length-limited modulation code is proposed for signal waveform modulation (SWM) optical discs. The proposed code is composed of a maximum transition run (MTR) code and a level modulation process. The MTR code is employed to realize high code rate and satisfy the requirements of channels. Level modulation is used to eliminate inappropriate codewords for SWM channels and determine the level numbers for different runs. The rate of the presented code is 7/8 bits/symbols, and the recording density parameter RBPF (recording bits per 400 nm) is 2.26, which is 50.7% more than that of a digital versatile disc (DVD). The realization of the proposed code in SWM discs and the corresponding signal characteristics are also shown. With the run-length detection and level detection solution, the bit error rate (BER) is less than 2×10-4, which is feasible for SWM multilevel optical discs.

Abstract:Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication system is a special index modulation (IM) technique with low hardware complexity and physical layer security potential. However, the deployment of the SFDM system is always complicated and time-consuming. To solve the problems, an adaptive SFDM system without phase measurement is proposed and implemented in this paper. We design a system architecture fit for self-adjustment and propose the corresponding adaptive algorithm. The state isolation and the BER performance are measured under an indoor channel, which verifies its validity.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dynamic mastering process model for signal waveform modulation (SWM) optical disc. To form the ideal microstructures and solve the problems in the SWM master manufacturing process, we use this model to simulate the three-dimensional mark profiles in the SWM read-only disc. The simulated micro-patterns of recording pits and lands are employed to optimize the writing strategy and provide a quantitative basis for manufacturing the sub-pits and sub-lands. The simulation mark profiles are compared with the experimental ones, which are produced with the optimized writing strategy parameters. Comparison results demonstrate that the simulated profiles are highly consistent with the actual ones.

Abstract:To improve the tracking servo performance, a novel signal waveform multi-level (SWML) read-only disc realized on the digital versatile disc (DVD) platform is presented. The characteristic of the differential phase detection (DPD) signal of the SWML read-only disc is analyzed both in theory and experiment. The amplitude of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc in an open tracking servo loop is about 2/3 of that of the DVD read-only disc. The uniformity and symmetry of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc are similar to those of the DVD read-only disc and better than the former multi-level run-length limited (ML-RLL) read-only disc.

Abstract:Two kinds of receivers' structures and algorithms of time division-synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) system based on joint detection (JD) or RAKE were analyzed. Transmission performance of these two kinds of receivers were compared through simulation considering multi-user under different multi-path fading conditions with various speeds in both uplink and downlink, and the implementation complexity was analyzed. Analysis result shows that because of multi-user signal synchronicity in downlink, RAKE receiver performs well with low complexity, while in uplink the performance of JD receiver, which is about the same as its downlink, is much better than that of RAKE receiver. RAKE receiver is sensitive to slow speed and deep fading condition, and there obviously exists error floor in uplink under multi-user condition.

Abstract:This paper presents the new development of the signal waveform modulation optical disc. The signal waveform modulation optical disc is realized through inserting a sub-pit/sub-land into an original land/pit. More storage states are realized with changing the size and position of the sub-pits/sub-lands, which influence the corresponding readout signal waveforms. Modulation code and its realization are key technologies for signal waveform modulation optical disc. In this study, we employ maximum run transition code and level modulation process as the modulation code of signal waveform modulation optical disc. A 5/6MTR (2, 10) code is designed as the first step of the proposed modulation code, and the level modulation process are used to avoid multilevel on shortest runs. The realization process of the proposed code is presented, and the maximum level numbers for different run-length marks are investigated with the calculated readout signals.

Abstract:Our team have proposed and implemented a new type of multi-level DVD, which features in using the waveform to differentiate levels. Servo accuracy is an important issue for an optical disk system, since it can directly influence the quality of readout signal. This paper analyses the influence of servo error on the readout signal for our multi-level DVD using numerical simulation. A readout model is established, where focus error (FE) and tracking error (TE) is introduced. A new parameter, waveform deviation, is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the influence. Simulation results show that the influences of TE/FE on readout signal are similar. Each of them will shrink the dynamic range of readout signal. When TE/FE exceeds a threshold, the waveform deviation will increase sharply.

Abstract:This paper presents the profile measurement method for recording marks in signal waveform modulation multilevel (SWM) read-only disc. In SWM disc, multilevel is realized with the combined varying size and position of inserted subpit/ sub-land in an original recording land/pit. The micro-patterns of the recording marks are key identifier for level of run-lengths. In mastering process, the mark profile is shaped with timing duration variation of the power of laser beam recorder (LBR). To form ideal SWM recording pit microstructure, atomic force microscope (AFM) is used to measure the pit profile, which is feedback and used to adjust the writing strategy. The measured parameters including depth, height and position, etc. 6T land and pit are selected as examples to describe the relationship between the variation of these parameters and levels of run-lengths. The recording symbol microstructures of DVD and signal amplitude modulation (SAM) multilevel optical disc are also measured with AFM, which are compared with the mark profile of SWM disc. The experimental results show that the AFM measurement for SWM recording marks is an effective method. These quantitative measurement results provide theoretical basis for SWM stamper disc manufacturing process.

Abstract:A new method for implementing a multilevel run length limited (ML-RLL) modulation code used in a signal waveform modulation multilevel (SWMM) optical disc, termed bimodulation code (BMC), is proposed. BMC is implemented with two steps: run length modulation and level modulation. A code rate of 5/6 BMC is realised, and the code efficiency reaches 94.47%. The parameter user bits per 400 nm of the presented code is 1.96, which is 30.7% more than that of EFMplus code used in a DVD system.
Fast Identification of Digital Amplitude Modulation Level at Low Signal-to-noise Ratio

Abstract:In order to rapidly and automatically identify the modulation level of digital amplitude modulated signals at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a method of identifying the modulation levels of M -ary quadrature amplitude modulation ( M -QAM) and M -ary amplitude shift keying ( M -ASK) is proposed. In this method, wavelet transform with the optimal scale is used to identify the modulation levels of M -QAM and M -ASK signals. The performance of this method was investigated through simulations. Simulation results show that when the SNR is not lower than −4 dB, the percentage of correct identification of M -QAM is higher than 93 %, and when the SNR is not lower than −10 dB, the percentage of correct identification of M -ASK is higher than 90 %, using only 100 observed symbols. It shows that this method can rapidly acquire good performance at a low SNR.

Abstract:A multi-level method using wave-shape modulation is presented. In this method, a short pit or land is added to the original marks, which leads to a recognizable "disturbance" in the readout signal and results in wave-shape modulation of readout signal. Using a simplified mastering model and angular-spectrum decomposition-based readout model, this method is simulated on the DVD system. Simulation determines how many levels can be realized for each run-length as well as the writing parameters for each level. Experiments on typical run-length of 6T and 11T are carried out. The readout signal agrees with the simulated one. Level error rates less than 1×10-4 and 1×10-5 are achieved. Experiments validate this new multi-level recording method.
