Abstract:The Radio Frequency (RF) signal of the Multi-Level Run-Length-Limited (ML-RLL) read-only disc is different from that of DVD, so the readout system of the ML-RLL read-only disc is built specially. The readout system of the ML-RLL read-only disc can realize servo control, RF signal readout and so on. The readout system consists of Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) traverse, analog front-end and digital processing part. Analog front-end can realize front-end amplification of the output signal of the optical pick-up and power drive of mechanism. Digital processing part mainly consists of digital circuits, which functions are the servo controlling, demodulation and decoding of RF signal, general control and so on. The whole system is implemented on two Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips and the experimental results show a good performance. We tested the important signals, and experimental results are also given to verify the performance of this development platform, which meets the controlling and detecting requirements to multi-level read-only disc completely. The Bit Error Rate (SER) can achieve below 10(-4).

Abstract:An innovative multilevel read-only recording method is proposed. In this method, a short pit/land is deliberately inserted to the original land/pit. This modifies the wave-shape of readout signal. Taking the wave-shape as the symbol of level detection, a signal wave-shape modulation (SWSM) multilevel method is realized. This method is carried out and validated on the DVD read-only manufacture and readout system. A capacity of 15 GB can be expected, and a bit error rate of 10−4 is achieved. The capacity can meet the demand of high definition movie publication. This method also provides a potential multi-level solution for other storage formats and systems.

Abstract:A new kind of multi-level recordable disc is presented in this paper. By improving the recording control signal in DVD-R/RW burning process, a Multi-level disc with signal waveform modulation can be achieved. The multi-level recording method increases the recording density but also the channel noise. The optimally designed partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) equalizer is effective in recovering channel symbol, and the original error rate reach 10E-4. This kind of multi-level method can be used for the purpose such as increasing the capacity of disc, hiding data and burning disc identification information etc.

Abstract:To improve the tracking servo performance, a novel signal waveform multi-level (SWML) read-only disc realized on the digital versatile disc (DVD) platform is presented. The characteristic of the differential phase detection (DPD) signal of the SWML read-only disc is analyzed both in theory and experiment. The amplitude of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc in an open tracking servo loop is about 2/3 of that of the DVD read-only disc. The uniformity and symmetry of the DPD signal of the SWML read-only disc are similar to those of the DVD read-only disc and better than the former multi-level run-length limited (ML-RLL) read-only disc.

Abstract:Multi-level optical recording using run-length-limited (RLL) modulation is a novel method to significantly increase the information recording density without changing optical or mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental results of four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile discs (DVD-ROM) are introduced. A new DC-free 4-level RLL (2,8) code with code rate of 8/10 (bits/symbol) is designed, and a partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detector is adopted to evaluate the detection performance of multi-level readout signals. By analyzing and comparing the simulation performances of different PRML schemes, we conclude that PR(1, 2, 2, 2,1) target is preferred to be applied in four-level RLL modulation DVD channels.

Abstract:A novel multi-level read-only recording using signal waveform modulation (SWM) is presented. The SWM is realized by inserting a sub-pit/sub-land to the original land/pit. Numerical simulation provides a helpful tool for the write strategy optimization. This method is experimentally validated on the DVD platform. Comparing with 2-level recording, an increase of 50% in capacity can be expected. It shows superiority over signal amplitude modulation (SAM) multi-level in replication processing, capacity increase and servo performance.

Abstract:Multilevel recording with run-length limited (RLL) modulation is a novel way to significantly increase the recording density without changing the optical or mechanical units of current optical, disc systems. In this paper, a new efficient 4-ary RLL(2, 13) code with special constraint is designed for four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile disc (DVD-ROM). This code can result in alternate multilevel pits and lands on the disc, and reduce the difficulty of multilevel disc replication. Further more, simulation results show the symbol error rate (SER) performance can be improved about 3 dB when the proposed code is used for optical recording channel with partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection.

Abstract:Multilevel run-length-limited (ML-RLL) recording technology is employed to increase the capacity of the read-only disc with no change on optical or mechanical units. 4L-RLL recording on read-only disc has been implemented with minimum recorded mark length same as that in conventional digital versatile disc (DVD). The capacity of a double layer DVD disc with 4L-RLL (2, 10) modulation reaches 15 GB. Experimental results show that the ratio of the standard deviation of noise to the dynamic range of readout signal amplitude is lower than 4.53%, which means that the requirement of signal detection for 4L-RLL can be satisfied.

Abstract:The advantages of read-only storage is the predominance of optical recording relative to magnetic and other rewritable methods. Multilevel (ML) read-only technology has been a trend to improve the data capacity and transfer rate. Based on the principle and coding method of ML, this paper demonstrates some ML read-only recording methods, of which a new ML read-only recording is developed. This recording method integrates amplitude modulation achieved by the reaction mechanism of physics and chemistry of photoresist with the run-length-limited technology. The discs can be achieved using standard photoresist mastering and replication techniques with great compatibility to conventional binary read-only discs.

Abstract:Signal waveform modulation multi-level (SWML) read-only discs employ sub-lands/sub-pits to achieve multi levels. However, the tracking error signal derived from the conventional differential phase detection (DPD) method deteriorates in the SWML read-only disc owing to sub-lands/sub-pits inserted in the conventional pits/lands. To solve this problem, a new DPD method, which employs a signal adjuster and a phase regenerator, is proposed. The experimental results show that the tracking error signal derived from the new DPD method has better characteristics of uniformity and signal-to-noise ratio than that derived from the conventional DPD method in the SWML read-only disc.

Abstract:This paper presents the new development of the signal waveform modulation optical disc. The signal waveform modulation optical disc is realized through inserting a sub-pit/sub-land into an original land/pit. More storage states are realized with changing the size and position of the sub-pits/sub-lands, which influence the corresponding readout signal waveforms. Modulation code and its realization are key technologies for signal waveform modulation optical disc. In this study, we employ maximum run transition code and level modulation process as the modulation code of signal waveform modulation optical disc. A 5/6MTR (2, 10) code is designed as the first step of the proposed modulation code, and the level modulation process are used to avoid multilevel on shortest runs. The realization process of the proposed code is presented, and the maximum level numbers for different run-length marks are investigated with the calculated readout signals.

Abstract:A novel timing recovery method for multilevel run-length-limited read-only disc is described. This timing recovery system employs interpolation method, which extracts multilevel run-length limited (ML-RLL) data directly from asynchronous oversampling RF data. The timing recovery system in the proposed read channel has a feedback architecture and consists entirely of digital circuits. It uses Viterbi detector output to calculate the phase error feedback to interpolator, and a special sync pattern is inserted to help frequency detection. The experimental results show that the acquisition time is much smaller than conventional timing recovery system.

Abstract:A multi-level method using wave-shape modulation is presented. In this method, a short pit or land is added to the original marks, which leads to a recognizable "disturbance" in the readout signal and results in wave-shape modulation of readout signal. Using a simplified mastering model and angular-spectrum decomposition-based readout model, this method is simulated on the DVD system. Simulation determines how many levels can be realized for each run-length as well as the writing parameters for each level. Experiments on typical run-length of 6T and 11T are carried out. The readout signal agrees with the simulated one. Level error rates less than 1×10-4 and 1×10-5 are achieved. Experiments validate this new multi-level recording method.

Abstract:The multilevel run-length-limited (ML-RLL) modulation recording can improve the capacity and the data transfer rate of the optical disc without changing the optical and mechanical units. A viterbi detector with feedback is used to improve the performance of the partial-response maximum likelihood (PRML) system for ML-RLL optical recording. It can avoid the complexity of viterbi detector caused by the overlength of the memory length of the partial-response mode. The principle, implementation and the simulated results of the viterbi detector with feedback used in ML-RLL system are all presented.

Abstract:Multi-level run-length limited(ML-RLL) cording can increase the capacity of CD to 2.4 times of the conventional CD.A model of ML-RLL recorded mark is introduced with scalar diffraction theory,and the readout signal of ML-RLL CD is calculated.It is recognized from simulation results that influence of the change of recorded mark length to the amplitudes of readout signal is little for ML-RLL recording.It is beneficial to separate detection of the width of the recorded mark from the detection of the length.But the boundary of recorded mark is difficult to distinguish for continuous 3T recorded marks with different widths.
