Abstract:Understanding the in-cabin microenvironment of vehicles is important for assessing human exposure to ultrafine particles (UFPs) of vehicular origin. Filtration through the cabin filter is one of the processes that determine the ratio of in-cabin to on-roadway (I/O) UFP concentrations. In this study, two filter test systems were used to measure the particle filtration efficiencies of fine, ultrafine, and coarse particles. Two types of particles (diesel exhaust UFPs and Arizona test particles) were used to represent the particle types expected in the on-roadway environment. The most penetrating particle size was around 300 nm with filtration efficiency lower than 20%. As the filter face velocity increased from 0.1 to 0.5 m s(-1), the filtration efficiency decreased by 10-20%. For vehicles that were frequently driven under heavy traffic conditions (65,000-72,000 vehicles day(-1)) the pressure drop across the cabin filter increased up to 45 Pa within 10 months. It took 20 months to achieve the same pressure drop under moderate traffic conditions (10,000-24,000 vehicles day(-1)) and 30 months under light conditions (700-2,000 vehicles day(-1)). When the vehicle ventilation fan was on and the recirculation was off, it took approximately 10 months under heavy traffic conditions for UFP I/O ratios to increase by 40%. Explicit relationships between UFP I/O ratios and filter usage under various conditions were derived to facilitate cabin filter change decisions based on individual preferences.
Investigation on Lowering Commuters' In-Cabin Exposure to Ultrafine Particles

Abstract:To determine ways to reduce commuters' ultrafine particle exposure, factors such as ventilation condition, mechanical airflow rate, driving speed, cabin air filter quality, and cabin air filter use are examined. The results show that the in-cabin to on-roadway ratio is reduced by 20% when the fan is set to recirculation-on versus when set to recirculation-off because fewer ultrafine particles are exchanged between the inside and outside of the cabin. Also, when the fan is set to recirculation-off, the ratio is reduced by 40% at lower mechanical airflow rates. The thickest cabin air filter resulted in a 30% in-cabin to on-roadway ratio decrease compared with the thinnest. Thus, driving conditions with the least UFP in-cabin to on-roadway ratio is when a vehicle is operating with a high efficiency cabin filter, the ventilation set to fan-on and recycling is recirculation on, and at a high ventilation airflow rate. Furthermore, recirculating in-cabin air through a high efficiency particulate air filter was found to significantly reduce in-cabin UFP exposure. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A mass-balance indoor particle dynamic model was adopted and modified to investigate how on-roadway ultrafine particle (UFP, diameter < 100 nm) concentrations and vehicle ventilation settings affect UFP levels inside vehicles. The model was first parameterized focusing on a mechanistic, simulation-based interpretation of in-cabin data reported in Zhu et al. (2007). Under three different ventilation conditions, (1) Fan off-recirculation (RC) off, (2) Fan on-RC off, and (3) Fan on-RC on, the modeled UFP in-cabin to on-roadway (I/O) ratios were found to be 0.40, 0.25, and 0.10, respectively, and agree with the experimental data very well. Then, analysis focused on how the model input parameters, such as ventilation settings, vehicle speed, filtration, penetration, deposition, and human respiration, affect I/O ratios in broader categories of vehicle cabin microenvironments. Abstract:The rapidly growing vehicle population has become a crucial contributor to severe air-pollution and public health issues. In urban areas, vehicles have become one of the important sources of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In particular, the on-road concentrations of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) are typically many times higher than normal ambient concentrations, potentially leading to high in-vehicle exposure levels to TRAPs. Limited studies have focused on the variability in in-vehicle concentrations of TRAPs and linked the pollution level to both out-cabin conditions and the in-cabin filtration performance during real-world travels. Therefore, this study measured on-roadway, in-cabin concentrations of PM2.5 and carbon dioxide (CO2) by using well-calibrated low-cost sensors during various conditions. Our results indicate that, although in-cabin PM2.5 concentrations are correlated to out-cabin PM2.5 concentration levels, the control efficiency would be affected by the ventilation mode and the adoption of vehicular filtration device. The PM2.5 reduction efficiencies could achieve 45% and 77% for in-use and new filters made by vehicle manufacturers respectively, with the average CO2 concentration remained at a safe level (<800 ppm) under the in-vehicle outside air ventilation. The application of a high-efficiency cabin air (HECA) filter can further enhance the PM2.5 filtration efficiency up to 85-96%, indicating the significance of advanced cabin air filtration technology for improving in-cabin air quality and reducing health risk of Chinese drivers.
Study of ultrafine particles near a major highway with heavy-duty diesel traffic

Abstract:Motor vehicle emissions usually constitute the most significant source of ultrafine particles (diameter <0.1μm) in an urban environment. Zhu et al. (J. Air Waste Manage. Assoc., 2002, accepted for publication) conducted systematic measurements of the concentration and size distribution of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of a highway dominated by gasoline vehicle. The present study compares these previous measurements with those made on Interstate 710 freeway in Los Angeles. The 710 freeway was selected because more than 25% of the vehicles are heavy-duty diesel trucks. Particle number concentration and size distribution in the size range from 6 to 220nm were measured by a condensation particle counter and a scanning mobility particle sizer, respectively. Measurements were taken at 17, 20, 30, 90, 150, and 300m downwind and 200m upwind from the center of the freeway. At each sampling location, concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and black carbon (BC) were also measured by a Dasibi CO monitor and an Aethalometer, respectively. The range of average concentration of CO, BC and total particle number concentration at 17m was 1.9–2.6ppm, 20.3–24.8μg/m3, 1.8×105–3.5×105/cm3, respectively. Relative concentration of CO, BC and particle number decreased exponentially and tracked each other well as one moves away from the freeway. Both atmospheric dispersion and coagulation appears to contribute to the rapid decrease in particle number concentration and change in particle size distribution with increasing distance from the freeway. Average traffic flow during the sampling periods was 12,180 vehicles/h with more than 25% of vehicles being heavy-duty diesel trucks. Ultrafine particle number concentration measured at 300m downwind from the freeway was indistinguishable from upwind background concentration. These data may be used to estimate exposure to ultrafine particles in the vicinity of major highways.

Abstract:Among many environments, the motor vehicle cabin microenvironment has been of particular public concern. Although commuters typically spend only 5.5% of their time in vehicles, the emissions from various interior components of motor vehicles as well as emissions from exhaust fumes carried by ventilation supply air are significant sources of harmful air pollutants that could lead to unhealthy human exposure due to their high concentrations inside vehicles' cabins. This review summarizes significant findings in the literature on air quality inside vehicle cabins, including chemical species, related sources, measurement methodologies and control measures. More than 90 relevant studies performed across over 10 countries were carefully reviewed. These comprised more than 2000 individual road trips, where concentrations of numerous air pollutants were determined. Ultrafine particles, aromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyls, semi-volatile organic compounds and microbes have been identified as the primary air pollutants inside vehicle cabins. Air recirculation with high-efficiency air filter has been reported as the most effective measure to lower air pollutant concentrations. Future work should focus on investigating the health risks of exposure to various air pollutants inside different vehicles and further developing advanced air filter to improve the in-cabin air quality.
On-road quantification of the key characteristics of automobile HVAC systems in relation to in-cabin submicrometer particle pollution

Abstract:SUMMARY The key characteristics of vehicles which determine in-cabin pollutant concentrations from an external source are outside air flow into the compartment and the protection to pollutant penetration offered by the HVAC system and vehicle shell. We have quantified these variables in a fleet of vehicles of varying age and manufacturer under a recirculation ventilation setting, with a specific focus on submicrometer particulate matter. The particulate measurements were performed in an underground road tunnel in Sydney, Australia. The high levels of outside air infiltration and lack of a filter in the older vehicle examined (1989 Mazda 121) contributed to significantly increased I/O particulate ratios when compared to the newer vehicle (2005 VW Golf), which was fitted with a filter, and inside which outside air infiltration was ~4% of that measured in the older vehicle for the average speed maintained during tunnel trips. The particle concentrations measured in our study compare reasonably with those made in similar studies conducted overseas.

Abstract:The air supply from an airliner ventilation system is a mixture of outside air and recirculated air that passes through a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. The effectiveness of two commercial-available airliner cabin air filters were investigated in laboratory-based measurements due to the practical restrictions on airliner cabin filter testing during usage. The filtration efficiency and pressure drop were assessed at a particle size range of 20-500 nm under various airflow rates throughout the filter usage period. The Most Penetrating Particle Sizes (MPPS) were observed at similar to 150 and similar to 55 nm, where the filtration efficiency was 86% and 99% at the rated airflow rates (1600 m(3)/h and 1970 m(3)/h), respectively. The filtration efficiency decreased in response to the increased airflow rate from 1000 m(3)/h to 2200 m(3)/h, with the greatest reduction (similar to 10%) occurring at MPPS. An increase of 250 Pa in the pressure drop across the filter was observed as the airflow rate increased from 1000 m(3)/h to 2200 m(3)/h. Increased filter usage led to increases in both filtration efficiency and the pressure drop. The actual filter usage was estimated using dust loading in the laboratory. Filtration efficiency increased similar to 10% and the pressure drop increased similar to 800% when 220 g/m(2) dust was loaded on the filer, corresponding to similar to 6000 hours filter usage at an in-cabin PM10 concentration of 100 mu g/m(3). Explicit relationships among filtration efficiency, pressure drop and filter usage under various in-cabin particle concentrations are presented as a reference to facilitate the use of more appropriate airliner cabin air filter exchange periods.
Influence of Filtration on I/O Particle Concentration Ratios at Urban Office Buildings

Abstract:Epidemiological research has consistently shown an association between fine and ultrafine particle concentrations, and increases in both respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. These particles, often found in vehicle emissions outside buildings, can penetrate inside via their envelopes and mechanically ventilated systems. Indoor activities such as printing, cooking and cleaning, as well as the movement of building occupants are also an additional source of these particles. In this context, the filtration systems of mechanically ventilated buildings can reduce indoor particle concentrations. Several studies have quantified the efficiency of dry-media and electrostatic filters, but they mainly focused on the particle size range > 300 nm. Some others studied ultrafine particles but their investigations were conducted in laboratories. At this point, there is still only limited information on in situ filter efficiency and an incomplete understanding of filtration influence on I/O ratios of particle concentrations. To help address these gaps in knowledge and provide new information for the selection of appropriate filter types in office building HVAC systems, we aimed to: (1) measure particle concentrations at up and down stream flows of filter devices, as well as outdoor and indoor office buildings; (2) quantify efficiency of different filter types at different buildings; and (3) assess the impact of these filters on I/O ratios at different indoor and outdoor source operation scenarios.
PM2.5 and ultrafine particles in passenger car cabins in Sweden and northern China-the influence of filter age and pre-ionization

Abstract:The main aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of filter status (new and aged), pre-ionization, on the particle filtration in modern passenger cars. Measurements of in-cabin and outside PM2.5 (dp < 2.5 μm) concentration and UFP (ultrafine particle, dp < 100 nm) counts, to calculate I/O (indoor to outdoor) ratios, were performed. They were done at two locations, to study the influence of different outside conditions on the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system. The measurements were performed in two new cars, with similar HVAC systems and settings, using a new filter and an aged synthetic filter. Furthermore, an ionization unit was installed upstream of the filter in both cars. This enabled the study of filter status, with and without ionization, under common driving conditions. The results show that the HVAC system performances were very similar at the two locations, with average I/O ratios of 0.35-0.40 without ionization and 0.15-0.20 with ionization applied, although the outside conditions were considerably different. Furthermore, the aged filter clearly worsened the filtration ability. Considering the corresponding average PM2.5 I/O ratios in one location as an example, the average for the new filter was 0.20 and 0.60 for the aged filter. The corresponding UFP I/O ratios were 0.24 and 0.57. Other findings are that the aged filter with ionization reached a performance close to the new filter (without ionization), and that increased ventilation airflow and decreased recirculation degree, as expected, led to an increase in the I/O ratio for both particle sizes.
Ultrafine Particles Deposition Inside Passenger Vehicles

Abstract:Although commuting time typically accounts for only 6% of the day for Americans, it has become a significant source of exposure to ultrafine particles (d p < 0.1 μ m) from vehicular emissions. Particle deposition onto surfaces, as an important particle loss mechanism, has been studied extensively in the indoor environments. However since air velocities, surface area to volume ratios and other contributing factors differ greatly between indoor and in-cabin environments, conclusions from indoor studies may not be directly applied to in-cabin microenvironments. In this study, ultrafine particle deposition rates were characterized under a range of air velocities and surface areas conditions inside different types of passenger vehicles. A diesel generator was used as a particle source and a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) was used to measure ultrafine particle size distribution inside the test vehicles. As in-cabin air velocities increased from natural convection (< 0.02 m s–1 ) to 0.65 m s–1 , ultrafine particle deposition rates increased with the greatest increases occurred for smaller particles. Other influencing factors, such as the number of passengers inside the vehicle, were also considered and investigated. It was found that ultrafine particle deposition rates are proportional to the surface areas inside vehicles consistent with previous indoor studies. Compared with available ultrafine particle deposition rates reported in the indoor environments, the in-cabin ultrafine particle deposition rates found in this study are about 3 to 20 times greater. This is likely due to higher air velocities and larger surface area to volume ratios in the in-cabin microenvironment.

Abstract:Vehicle cabin air filters are exposed to humid air more frequently than any other air filters during routine use. The filtration performance of several commercially-available cabin air filters was investigated, along with the humid exposure period, using laboratory-based measurements. The averaged filtration efficiency and pressure drop were measured at similar to 70% and 75 Pa, respectively. Significant increases in filtration efficiency (up to 15%) and pressure drop (up to 250 Pa) were observed as the humid exposure time increased. Filtration efficiency increased similar to 15% and pressure drop increased 250 Pa as 140 g water was absorbed, which represents similar to 60 minutes humid exposure at a relative humidity of 90%. The pressure drop increased significantly at the beginning of the humid exposure due to the greater water absorption capacity of dryer dust in the filter. The dust load had a significant effect on the changes in filtration efficiency and pressure drop. The filtration efficiency and pressure drop of the 12-month used filter increased 2 times faster than that of the new filter at the same exposure conditions. The filtration efficiency and pressure drop were explicitly expressed as functions of the water absorption mass in the filter. Two coefficients were empirically derived and successfully accounted for the effects of humid exposure on filtration efficiency and pressure drop.
Investigating the filtration performance and service life of vehicle cabin air filters in China

Abstract:To protect occupants in vehicle cabin environments from the health risks of high concentrations of particulate matter (PM), it is important to install vehicle cabin air filter (VCAF) to eliminate PM. In this study, we investigated the filtration performance of 22 VCAFs. Results showed that the minimum average filtration efficiency was 56.1 % for particles with a diameter of 0.1-0.3 μm, a pressure drop of 33.2-250 Pa at air velocity of 2.5 m/s, and the dust-holding capacity ranged from 5.8 to 19.4 g. In addition, as the filter area increased from 0.23 m2 to 0.50 m2, the filtration efficiency for particles with a diameter of 0.1-0.3 μm increased from 56.7 % to 77.5 %, the pressure drop decreased from 96.1 to 62.5 Pa, and the dust holding capacity increased 2.7 times. Furthermore, we compared the service life of VCAF from 31 major Chinese cities and found that the service life varied greatly from maximum of 1730 h for Haikou to minimum of 352 h for Shijiazhuang. Considering occupant health risks, Beijing requires that VCAFs have PM2.5 filtration efficiency at least 88.1 %, and Liaoning requires minimum of 97.5 %. Hence, choosing the appropriate VCAF based on the atmospheric environment of different cities deserves our attention.
Effect of cabin ventilation rate on ultrafine particle exposure inside automobiles

Abstract:We alternately measured on-road and in-vehicle ultrafine (<100 nm) particle (UFP) concentration for 5 passenger vehicles that comprised an age range of 18 years. A range of cabin ventilation settings were assessed during 301 trips through a 4 km road tunnel in Sydney, Australia. Outdoor air flow (ventilation) rates under these settings were quantified on open roads using tracer gas techniques. Significant variability in tunnel trip average median in-cabin/on-road (I/O) UFP ratios was observed (0.08 to approximately 1.0). Based on data spanning all test automobiles and ventilation settings, a positive linear relationship was found between outdoor air flow rate and I/O ratio, with the former accounting for a substantial proportion of variation in the latter (R(2) = 0.81). UFP concentrations recorded in-cabin during tunnel travel were significantly higher than those reported by comparable studies performed on open roadways. A simple mathematical model afforded the ability to predict tunnel trip average in-cabin UFP concentrations with good accuracy. Our data indicate that under certain conditions, in-cabin UFP exposures incurred during tunnel travel may contribute significantly to daily exposure. The UFP exposure of automobile occupants appears strongly related to their choice of ventilation setting and vehicle.
Experimental investigation of interpersonal particle transport in an aircraft cabin mockup with nanofiber air filters

Abstract:Improving aircraft environmental control systems could reduce the risk of airborne infectious disease transmission in aircraft cabins. The high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters used in the existing systems exhibit high pressure drop, which results in high consumption of energy and fuel. Nanofiber air filters fabricated by electrospinning can reduce pressure drop, but their performance in aircraft cabins is unknown. Therefore, this study experimentally investigated the interpersonal particle transport in an aircraft cabin mockup with nanofiber air filters. First, a full-scale, fully occupied, 7-row, single-aisle aircraft cabin mockup was constructed. Nanofiber filtration units were fabricated using the electrospinning technique. Under the well-sealed laboratory testing conditions, both the small-scale nanofiber and HEPA filter media exhibited a particle removal efficiency of around 99 %. The performance of nanofiber and HEPA filtration units installed in the environmental control system of the mockup was then measured. Finally, the interpersonal particle transport in the cabin was measured. The results show that the particle removal efficiency of the nanofiber filtration units installed in the environmental control system ranged from 64 to 72 % when the particle size was 0.3-0.4 μm, which primarily reflected the large air leakages associated with the filter installation. At the filter media level, the pressure drop across the nanofiber units in the mockup was 61-67 % lower than that across the HEPA units under the same airflow rate, which however may not necessarily translate into lower pressure drop for actual filters in aircraft due to the potentially different design in terms of media face area. The average normalized particle concentration in the breathing zones of fellow passengers in the cabin mockup with the nanofiber filtration units was by 0.23, 0.29, and 0.32, respectively, when the index passenger was seated at the window, middle, and aisle.
A Study on the Filtration Characteristics of DPF for Diesel Vehicle Particulates in Different Driving Conditions

Abstract:By comparing the particle size distribution of number and mass concentrations of a light diesel vehicle behind diesel particulate filter (DPF) with that before DPF in different phases of NEDC test cycle, the effects of DPF on the filtering results of particulates with different sizes are analyzed. The results show that the filtering effects for particulates especially fine particulates with a size smaller than 1μm is relatively low in the high-speed sharp deceleration conditions of suburban driving phase, leading to a low overall filtration efficiency (only 52%) of DPF in that vehicle with NEDC test cycle.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the results and analysis of a recent field campaign in August 2007 investigating the impacts of emissions from transportation on air quality and community concentrations in Beijing, China. We conducted measurements in three different environments, on-road, roadside and ambient. The carbon monoxide, black carbon and ultrafine particle number emission factors for on-road light-duty vehicles are derived to be 95gkg−1-fuel, 0.3gkg−1-fuel and 1.8×1015 particleskg−1-fuel, respectively. The emission factors for on-road heavy-duty vehicles are 50gkg−1-fuel, 1.3gkg−1-fuel and 1.1×1016 particleskg−1-fuel, respectively. The carbon monoxide emission factors from this study agree with those derived from remote sensing and on-board vehicle emission testing systems in China. The on-road black carbon and particle number emission factors for Chinese vehicles are reported for the first time in the literature. Strong traffic impacts can be observed from the concentrations measured in these different environments. Most clear is a reflection of diesel truck traffic activity in black carbon concentrations. The comparison of the particle size distributions measured at the three environments suggests that the traffic is a major source of ultrafine particles. A four-day traffic control experiment conducted by the Beijing Government as a pilot to test the effectiveness of proposed controls was found to be effective in reducing extreme concentrations that occurred at both on-road and ambient environments.

Abstract:In this paper, a HVAC assembly for a domestic automotive air conditioner is studied. The 3D modeling and fluid simulation of the HVAC assembly are carried out. The flow of the gas-solid two-phase flow in a certain concentration of PM 2.5 is studied, including the velocity distribution of the upper surface of the filter element and the trajectories of the internal fluid and particles are analyzed. According to the simulation results, the unreasonableness of the existing HVAC assembly structure is found and the optimization suggestion is put forward.

Abstract:Abstract The main aim of this study is to develop a mathematical size-dependent vehicle cabin model for particulate matter concentration including PM 2.5 (particles of aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) and UFPs (ultrafine particles of aerodynamic diameter less than 100 nm), as well as CO 2 concentration. The ventilation airflow rate and cabin volume parameters are defined from a previously developed vehicle model for climate system design. The model simulates different filter statuses, application of pre-ionization, different airflow rates and recirculation degrees. Both particle mass and count concentration within 10–2530 nm are simulated. Parameters in the model are defined from either available component test data (for example filter efficiencies) or assumptions from corresponding studies (for example particle infiltration and deposition rates). To validate the model, road measurements of particle and CO 2 concentrations outside two vehicles were used as model inputs. The simulated inside PM 2.5 , UFP and CO 2 concentration were compared with the inside measurements. Generally, the simulation agrees well with measured data (Person’s r 0.89–0.92), and the simulation of aged filter with ionization is showing higher deviation than others. The simulation using medium airflows agrees better than the simulation using other airflows, both lower and higher. The reason for this may be that the filter efficiency data used in the model were obtained at airflows close to the medium airflow. When all size bins are compared, the sizes of 100–300 nm were slightly overestimated. The results indicated that among others, expanded filter efficiency data as a function of filter ageing and airflow rate would possibly enhance the simulation accuracy. An initial application sample study on recirculation degrees presents the model’s possible application in developing advanced climate control strategies.
