Abstract:This paper numerically investigates the symmetrical and asymmetrical water entry of a three-dimensional (3D) bow-flared section by a Cartesian grid multiphase flow model with multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) motion. In this model, an improved 3D ghost cell method (GCM) is employed to treat the complex moving boundaries, and the gradient augmented level set (GALS) method is adopted to capture the large-deformation free surfaces. A six-DOF rigid body motion model is incorporated to describe the multiple DOF motion. The 3D water entry of a free-falling bow-flared section is simulated to validate the accuracy and reliability of the present model in comparison with the experimental results. Also, the effects of the roll angle and the drop velocity on the slamming load, the local pressure, the velocity variation, and the free surface evolution are discussed. The extremely large impulsive pressure, the secondary impact, and the high-speed jet flow are observed. Further, the effects of the multiple DOF motion are examined. It is found that the vertical slamming load and the impulsive pressure at the flared area increase remarkably compared with those in the single DOF. The flared slamming causes severe threats to the hull structure especially for a large roll angle or a large drop velocity.
