Abstract:In this paper, water entry processes at various water entry velocities and attack angles are simulated in hydrostatic and wave environments by using a realizable k – ε turbulence model, Zwart–Gerber–Belarmri cavitation model and overset mesh. The numerical simulation method is validated by water entry experiments, and the numerical values are in good agreement with the experimental values. The results show that the wave environment affects the cavity shape. Since the cross flow prevents the cavity from expanding, the cavities on the two sides of the projectile have different sizes, and tail-slap is likely to occur. Furthermore, an appropriate increase in the water entry velocity should be considered to ensure the trajectory stability of the projectile in the wave environment. Compared with an initial velocity of 400 m/s to 100 m/s, the maximum values of the trajectory deflection, drag coefficient, and lift coefficient are reduced by 41.1%, 27.1% and 34.1%, respectively, and the velocity attenuation is decelerated by 0.6%. Besides, the projectile in positive attack angle has better ballistic stability. Compared to a positive attack angle of the same size, the maximum deflection of α = −2° and α = −4° decreased by 13.6% and 6.62%, respectively. The results in this paper can serve as a reference for the cavity and hydrodynamic characteristics of projectiles in a wave environment.
