Abstract:In order to approach the influence of TiO2configuration on photocatalysis,the photo-catalytic degradation process of methyl-orange by TiO2which was prepared by adsorption phase reaction technique and impregnation methods was studied.The influence of preparation conditions on the morphology and activity of TiO2was also investigated.After analyzing the reaction,it assumes that the diffusion and surface reaction are coupled.The controlling step depends on the activity of catalyst and the concentration of methyl-orange.It affects the apparent order of the reaction.After evaluating the activity of catalyst,it is deduced that the key factor affecting the photo-catalytic activity is the type of crystal of TiO2,secondly the content of Ti and diameter of the particles.The catalyst prepared by adsorption phase reaction technique has a larger content of Ti,smaller diameter,and can be better controlled,thereby better photo-catalytic.With the increasing of water content,the advantage of adsorption phase reaction technique is becoming more and more conspicuous.
Nanoporous core–shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposites with superior photocatalytic properties towards the degradation of methyl orange

Abstract:We present a facile two-step strategy to fabricate a novel nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposite photocatalyst. The photocatalyst was synthesized via the combination of dealloying of the as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 (at.%) precursor powders in alkaline media with subsequent surface oxidation in air. The microstructure of the as-prepared photocatalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the as-prepared photocatalyst exhibits an open, bicontinuous interpenetrating ligament (ca. 30 nm)-channel (ca. 15 nm) structure, and is comprised of Cu (core) and Cu2O (shell) phases. Methyl orange (MO) was used as the model pollutant, and photodegradation experiments were monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O photocatalyst shows excellent photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of MO under sunlight. The MO degradation rate can reach as high as 8.04 mg min(-1) g(cat)(-1). In addition, the influence of additive amounts of photocatalyst and initial concentrations of MO on the photodegradation process has been investigated. The photodegradation mechanism of the as-prepared photocatalyst has also been discussed.

Abstract:The photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) was investigated in aqueous suspension containing titania nanoparticles with mesostructures (m-TiO(2)) under UV irradiation. The experimental results show that 98% MO can be mineralized in the 1.0 g l(-1) m-TiO(2) suspension (pH 2.0) after 45 min illumination. Particular attention was devoted to the identification and the transformation of the fragments retaining the chromophoric group. The photodegradation mechanism of the quinonoid MO mainly involves three intermedial processes: demethylation, methylation and hydroxylation. Among those processes, demethylation is more favorable than the hydroxylation, but the hydroxylation results in the largest number of intermediates. The degradation pathway of quinonoid MO under the optimal conditions is also proposed.

Abstract:Natural mordenite, replacing the synthetic zeolites, has been employed as the support of TiO2, and its photocatalytic activity has been examined in methyl orange (MO) aqueous under UV light. AFM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and fluorescence spectra have been used to reveal the loading effects of TiO2 on mordenite. The results show that the photocatalytic degradation (PCD) reaction rates are sharply increased by natural zeolite supports. Since mordenite is photo-inert, the PCD-enhancement is mostly caused by the bonding effects of Ti–O–Si and Ti–O–Al. Moreover, another two distinct natural zeolites have been employed as the supports of TiO2, in order to check the universality of PCD-enhancement effect of natural zeolites on TiO2. And the factors of PCD reaction on TiO2–zeolite, such as pH and catalyst dose, have been investigated.
Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange by Using Different Shape-controlled TiO2 Micro-crystals

Abstract:Different shape-controlled TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared from titanium butoxide and titanium chloride precursors through the sol-gel method and using sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(DBS),sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMCS) as shape-controlled agent.The photocatclytic activity of the shape-controlled TiO2 micro-crystals was also investigated using methyl orange(MO) as model compound.The XRD results indicated that the TiO2 micro-crystals obtained at the anealling temperature of 500 ℃ were composed of the anatase crystalline phase.The UV vis absorption spectra suggested that the shape-controlled TiO2 micro-crystals showed a red shift and a lower band gap energy.The cubic TiO2 micro-crystals shaped by DBS had a higher photocatclytic activity than other samples.TiO2 micro-crystals calcined at 600 ℃ showed the highest photocatclytic activity with the highest decomposition rate of MO.

Abstract:In this paper, M/CeO2 (M=Pt, Ag, Au) photocatalysts were prepared and used for visible light degradation of methyl orange (MO) with H2O2 as a sacrificial reagent. Utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 physical adsorption (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photocurrent characterization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc., the structure, morphology, chemical state, and optical properties of the catalyst were investigated. The effects of the amount of catalyst, the initial concentration of methyl orange, the pH value of the solution and the number of reuses on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of MO were studied. The results showed that under optimized reaction condition of 15 mg 2Pt/CeO2 catalyst, the initial concentration of MO was 20 mg/L, pH=5, the reaction time was 195 min and the amount of H2O2 was 0.2 mL, the degradation percentage of MO reached 75.8%. The main active species of photodegradation are hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, which was determined by free radical capture experiments and combined electron spin resonance (ESR). The photocatalytic mechanism based on work function difference and electron transfer was also discussed in detail.

Effect of Natural Zeolite Supports for Photoactive TiO2 During the Photodegradation Process

Abstract:The porous natural zeolites have been employed as the TiO_2 supports,and the photocatalytic process of TiO_2/zeolite on methyl orange(MO) has been studied.The interface mechanism between the TiO_2 and the natural zeolite has been discussed,and the change of the kinetic process before and after TiO_2 loading has been studied for the first time.The "super reaction area" model has been brought out for liquid system,in order to explain the photocatalytic process of the TiO_2/zeolite system.The AFM,IR and spectra analysis,a certain amount of TiO_2 combined with natural zeolite by Ti-O-Si or Ti-O-Al chemical bond.At the initial stage of photcatalytic degradation(PCD) of MO,the addition of nature zeolite supports have made the initial reaction change from original poor "adsorption controlled" process to the "reaction controlled" process.Since all of the reaction rates of TiO_2/zeolite are higher than the pure TiO_2 powder,it's obvious that the zeolite supports have enhanced the rate of the slower adsorption process resulting in the increase of the initial reaction rate R_0.The first-order reaction rate k_1 shows that no matter what kind of process controlled the PCD process at the initial stage the whole process of PCD must be an adsorption controlling process undoubtedly because of the proliferating of the medial product.
TiO2 Nanoparticles Supported on PMMA Nanofibers for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange

Abstract:In this paper, a photocatalyst composed of TiO2 nanoparticles supported on the nanofibers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was successfully prepared by hydrothermally treating the electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide precursor at 135°C for 8h. As-prepared composite was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal gravimetric analysis and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements. It is revealed that high content (42%) of tetragonal anatase TiO2 nanoparticles are uniformly loaded on the PMMA nanofibers to constitute the composite (TiO2@PMMA) photocatalyst with BET surface area of 21.4m2g−1. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2@PMMA towards the degradation of methyl orange (MO), a model pollutant, has been investigated. It is observed that 0.1g of the composite could degrade 100mL of MO (10mg/L) completely within 50min under UV illumination, exhibiting a high catalytic activity. Moreover, the composite could be easily separated from the reaction system by filtration, and maintain high photocatalytic activity in five consecutive cycles of the degradation of MO, suggesting its potentials in recycling use. The work provides a new approach for the development of novel supported photocatalysts with high catalytic activity and good reusability.

Abstract:Natural rutile, which contains substituting metal ions as V5+ and Fe3+, was found to exhibit good photoactivity in visible light. The result showed that 60.59% of methyl orange (MO) was photodegraded after 1h visible light irradiation. Compared with P25 TiO2, the efficiency and mechanism of MO degradation by natural rutile was discussed. The visible light response was due to the substituting ions altering the band structure, and the effective photoactivity was related to the presence of H2O2 and surface hydroxyl groups. Moreover, the substituting metal ions in their high oxidation states could capture photogenerated electrons to suppress electron–hole combination.

Abstract:A nanocrystal catalyst Ag/ZnO was successfully synthesized using a simple solvothermal method in this study. This catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that this catalyst was composed of metallic Ag and ZnO. The photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) was investigated in aqueous suspension containing Ag/ZnO catalyst under UV irradiation. Liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization ion-trap mass spectrometry was applied to the analysis of the samples coming from the photocatalytic degradation of MO. The experimental results showed that there were four intermediates existing in the photocatalytic reaction. MO could be mineralized in the Ag/ZnO suspension after 60 min illumination.
High performance photocatalyst TiO2@UiO-66 applied to degradation of methyl orange

Abstract:MOFs have considerable adsorption capacity due to their huge specific surface area. They have the characteristics of photocatalysts for their organic ligands can absorb photons and produce electrons. In this paper, the photodegradation properties of TiO2 composites loaded with UiO-66 were investigated for the first time for MO. A series of TiO2@UiO-66 composites with different contents of TiO2 were prepared by a solvothermal method. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was performed using a high-pressure mercury lamp as the UV light source. The effects of TiO2 loading, catalyst dosage, pH value, and MO concentration were investigated. The results showed that the degradation of MO by TiO2@UiO-66 could reach 97.59% with the addition of only a small amount of TiO2 (5 wt%). TiO2@UiO-66 exhibited significantly enhanced photoelectron transfer capability and inhibited efficient electron-hole recombination compared to pure TiO2 in MO degradation. The composite catalyst indicated good stability and reusability when they were recycled three times, and the photocatalytic reaction efficiencies were 92.54%, 88.76%, and 86.90%. The results provide a new option to design stable, high-efficiency MOF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:A novel magnetically recoverable AgBr@Ag3PO4/Fe3O4 hybrid was prepared by a simple deposition-precipitation approach and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results revealed that the photocatalytic activity and stability of AgBr@Ag3PO4/Fe3O4 composite toward decomposition of methyl orange (MO) dye were superior to those of pure Ag3PO4 under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity enhancement of AgBr@Ag3PO4/Fe3O4 is closely related to the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs derived from the matching band potentials between Ag3PO4 and AgBr, as well as the good conductivity of Fe3O4. Moreover, the photocatalyst could be easily separated by applying an external magnetic field due to its magnetic property. The quenching effects of different scavengers proved that active h(+) and O-center dot(2)- played the major role for the MO degradation. This work would provide new insight for the construction of visible light responsible photocatalysts with high performance, good stability, and recoverability.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange by Metal‐Tio2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:A series of transition metal‐doped TiO2 was prepared by a simple sol‐solvothermal method. Ag−TiO2 was chosen for further study due to its extraordinary reactivity. Ag−TiO2 produces more ⋅O2− and ⋅OH under visible light, which are responsible for the oxidation of methyl orange to CO2 and H2O and other inorganic small molecules. In this study, a series of transition metal‐doped TiO2 was prepared by a simple sol‐solvothermal method. Mix an ethanol solution of tetrabutyl titanate and metal nitrate solution to obtain a homogeneous sol, which is then subjected to solvothermal treatment. After calcination, the metal‐TiO2 naoncomposite was obtained. Selected transition metal precursors, including Cu, Fe, Ag, Cr, Co and Zn, were doped into TiO2 nanocatalysts to assess photocatalytic degradation activities. The results show that 1 mol % Ag−TiO2 photocatalyst has a larger specific surface area, a stable anatase phase and the narrowest forbidden band energy (3.00 eV). In photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) tests, 1 mol % Ag−TiO2 could reach 100 % decolourisation after 70 min and 75.43 % mineralisation after 90 min. ESR analysis confirmed that Ag doping significantly increased the content of ⋅O2− and ⋅OH for the TiO2 catalyst, which are responsible for the oxidation reactions and consequently degradation of pollutants. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism of MO was also proposed. The TOC analyses confirmed the mineralization of MO. The excellent thermal and chemical stability of 1 mol % Ag−TiO2 has also been demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis and cycling experiments. Electrochemical tests have also demonstrated the excellent electrochemical properties of 1 mol % Ag−TiO2.

Spectroscopic Analyses on Ros Generation Catalyzed by Tio2, Ceo2/Tio2 and Fe2o3/Tio2 under Ultrasonic and Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:In this work, the TiO2, CeO2/TiO2 and Fe2O3/TiO2 powders were irradiated, respectively, by ultrasound and visible-light, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were estimated by the method of Oxidation-Extraction Photometry (OEP). That is, the 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) can be oxidized by generated ROS into 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO), which can be extracted by mixed solvent of benzene and carbon tetrachloride. The DPCO extract liquor displays an obvious absorbance at 563nm wavelength. In addition, some influencing factors, such as (ultrasonic or visible-light) irradiation time, catalyst addition amount and DPCI concentration, on the generation of ROS were also reviewed. The results indicated that the quantities of generated ROS increase with the increase of (ultrasonic or visible-light) irradiation time and catalyst addition amount. Moreover, the displayed quantities of ROS are also related with DPCI concentration. And then, several radical scavengers were used to determine the kinds of the generated ROS. At last, the researches on the sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation of several organic dyes have also been performed. It is wished that this paper might offer some important subjects for broadening the applications of sonocatalytic and photocatalytic technologies in future environment treatment.

Abstract:Pollution from dye-containing industrial wastewater is a major health hazard in many nations, necessitating modern remediation approaches. Herein, zinc oxide (ZnO) was employed to degrade methyl orange (MO) as an organic dye pollutant under UV light irradiation. The performance was observed experimentally and theoretically under optimized conditions including the pH (11), the concentration of the nanoparticle solution (900 ppm), and time (3 h), resulting in a degradation efficiency of 89.6%. Furthermore, the influence of various parameters on MO degradation was evaluated by response surface methodology (RSM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed to investigate the crystallinity and morphological behavior of ZnO-NPs. In addition, the surface chemical composition was evaluated by the XPS analysis. This study evaluates the degradation efficiency of ~ 90% using single metal oxide to degrade MO, opening new opportunities for environmental applications.

Abstract:BiOI/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts with various BiOI amounts were prepared by a simple deposition method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and low temperature nitrogen adsorption. The photocatalytic performance of BiOI/Bi2WO6 catalysts was evaluated using the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol in an aqueous solution under UV and visible light irradiation. The results indicate that compared with commercial Degussa P25 and pure Bi2WO6, the 13.2% BiOI/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst shows much higher UV and visible light photocatalytic performance. The obviously increased photocatalytic activity could be mainly attributed to the effective transfer of the photogenerated electrons and holes at the interface of Bi2WO6 and BiOI, which reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs. A transfer process of photogenerated carriers is proposed based on the band structures of BiOI and Bi2WO6. Radical scavengers experiments demonstrate that center dot OH, h(+), center dot O-2(-) and H2O2, especially h(+), together dominate the photodegradation process of MO and phenol.
Catalytic degradation of methyl orange by Ag-doped Zn3(VO4)2 photocatalyst

Abstract:Ag-doped Zn3(VO4)2 photocatalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method combined with subsequent heat treatment process.The properties of as-prepared photocatalyst for degradation of methyl orange under visible light were studied,and then the influence of catalyst dosage,initial concentrations and pH value of methyl orange solution,Na2SO4 concentrations and H2O2 amounts was investigated.The repeated use performance of Ag-Zn3(VO4)2 photocatalyst was evaluated.The results showed that the degradation rate of methyl orange reached 99.18% under the optimal condition of catalyst dosage 2.0 g·L-1,initial concentrations of methyl orange solution 20 mg·L-1,pH=6.2 and irradiation time 5 h.Addition of Na2SO4 inhibited photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange,and the inhibition action strengthened as the salt concentration increased.H2O2 accelerated photocatalysis in a certain concentration range,and the degradation rate of methyl orange could be improved by 21.68 percentage points under the condition of methyl orange solution 100 mL and 30% H2O2 amount 1.0 mL.After five recycling runs,Ag-Zn3(VO4)2 photocatalyst still kept 75.99% removal rate of methyl orange under the irradiation for 5 h.

Abstract:Zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) are emerging multifunctional agents for contaminant treatment. However, Fe2O3-Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NIO), which are generated when nZVI is oxidized, can also make a meaningful contribution to the photocatalytic degradation of organics. Taking this into account, NIO and a Fe2O3-Fe3O4-montmorillonite nanocomposite (NIO-M) were prepared, and their morphology and microstructure were investigated via a series of characterization methods. The presence of montmorillonite is critical to decreasing the aggregation and size of the crystals, which helps improve the thermal stability of the crystals. The photocatalysis performance of NIO and NIO-M for the degradation of methyl orange was evaluated, and the data indicated that NIO-M exhibited an excellent optical response and photocatalytic activity in the visible region. The degradation rate of methyl orange was 1.47 times faster within 45 min of irradiation compared with NIO. The results indicate that NIO-M is a promising type of visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the degradation of organics in aqueous solutions.
Electrochemical and Photocatalytic Properties of Ru-doped TiO2 Nanostructures for Degradation of Methyl Orange Dye

Abstract:This study was focused on chemical synthesis of the pure TiO2 nanorods and Ru-doped TiO2 nanorods and their applications as photocatalyst for photodegradation of the methyl orange (MO) dye under UV and visible irradiations. The morphology, crystallinity, optical, electrochemical and photocatalyst properties of prepared films were characterized by FESEM, XRD, UV-visible absorption, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photodegradation analyses. The FESEM and XRD studies showed both of films were synthesized in nanorod shape and anatase crystal phase. The optical studies indicate that the optical band gap values were obtained 3.37 eV and 3.22 eV for nanostructured pure TiO2 and Ru-doped TiO2 films, respectively. EIS analysis indicates that Ru-doped TiO2 film exhibited lower recombination rate of photo-excited carriers through effective separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Photodegradation studies of MO show that the degradation rate significantly was improved by Ru doping and the complete removal of MO were obtained after 55 and 45 minutes under UV and sunlight irradiation, respectively. While, degradation efficiency of MO on pure TiO2 photocatalyst were achieved 57.0 % and 4.8 % after 60 minutes UV and sunlight irradiations, respectively. Therefore, the photodegradation rate of doped film was remarkably enhanced under both UV and sunlight irradiations. Moreover, photocatalytic activity was remarkably promoted under sunlight on doped photocatalyst because of narrowing optical band gaps.

Abstract:A photocatalytic reactor using an ozone-generating mercury vapor lamp with the capability to simultaneously utilize the ozone internally generated from the lamp was fabricated. The reactor included a microbubble-generating mechanism to facilitate the dissolution of ozone and oxygen in the reaction liquid. Photocatalytic and photolytic degradation were investigated using two types of mercury vapor lamps: an ozone-generating lamp emitting at both 254 nm and 185 nm as well as a germicidal lamp emitting only at 254 nm. The roles of ozone, 254 nm light and 185 nm light under the degradation of methyl orange were investigated. In particular, the mineralization of methyl orange in different processes, namely pure ozonation, photolysis under an ozone-generating lamp with or without the assistance of ozone, photolysis under a germicidal lamp, TiO2 photocatalysis under an ozone-generating lamp with or without the assistance of ozone and TiO2 photocatalysis under a germicidal lamp, were analyzed with the chemical oxygen demand and UV-visible absorption measurements.
