Abstract:Carbon nanotube and Polyaniline(Pani)composite for gas sensing were investigated in this paper.Pani coated multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)was synthesized by means of in-sute polymerization and dielectrophoresis.The nano-composite sensor showed a 3.4 reversible resistance change to 10×10-6 NH3 with a response time of 15 s while the sensitivities of Pani film sensor is 1.9 in the contrast experiment.The results indicate that the nano-composite sensitivity and sensing dynamic are improved due to the nanostructure with ultra-high surface-volume ratio and good conductivity.The mechanism of sensitivity to NH3 of the sensor was also discussed.

Abstract:Sensing technology is the key of intelligent packaging. A variety of different sensing systems for indicating freshness through intelligent packaging have been presented. Polyaniline (PANI) can change its color reversibly through the acid-base reaction with reactive compounds and has been widely used in different kinds of sensors. However, because PANI is insoluble in common organic solvents, this limits its practical usage in many applications. In this work, a highly stable polyaniline-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS) colloid has been developed as a facile colorimetric sensor of volatile amines. The results showed the PANI:PSS colloid is quite sensitive to changes in pH. When PANI:PSS colloids were homogenously deposited on filter paper, the paper are used as a sensor to detect triethylamine (TEA) vapor. The green color of the test paper changed to blue at a TEA concentration as low as 188 ppm.
In-Situ Self-Assembled Polyaniline/Carbon Nanotubes Nanofiber Thin Films For Ammonia Gas Sensors

Abstract:Polyaniline/carbon nanotubes (PANI/CNTs) nanocomposite thin films were fabricated through an in-situ self-assembled method on the interdigitated electrodes for ammonia (NH3) gas sensors. CNTs presented in this work consisted of single-walled CNTs (SWNT) and multi-walled CNTs (MWNT). The pure MWNT dispersed in N,N-Dimethyl Formamide (DMF) solution was also dipped on the interdigitated electrodes for gas-sensing property comparison. The SEM images showed clearly that PANI/CNTs nanocomposite thin films possess a nanofiber mesh like structure, and TEM analysis exhibited that the diameter of the pure MWNT was 10 nm whereas that of the PANI/MWNT nanofiber was about 50 nm, which confirmed a PANI layer packed on the surface of MWNT during the in-situ polymerization process. The gas-response of different sensing films to NH3 was investigated at room temperature. It was found that PANI/MWNT nanocomposite thin film exhibited the higher sensitivity than pure MWNT film and PANI/SWNT thin film, which might be ascribed to more active sites for gas adsorption for the PANI/MWNT nanocomposite thin film. The response-recovery property was studied when the PANI/MWNT thin film sensor was exposed to different concentrations of NH3 ranging from 23 to 141 ppm, and it was found that the sensitivity was linear to the concentrations of NH3. This sensor also had good reproducibility and selectivity.
Gas sensors for ammonia detection based on polyaniline-coated multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Polyaniline-coated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (PANI-coated MWNTs) were prepared by in situ polymerization method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the as-prepared PANI-coated MWNTs. Obtained results indicated that PANI was uniformly coated on MWNTs, and the thickness of the coatings can be controlled by changing the weight ratios of aniline monomer and MWNTs in the polymerization process. Sensors were fabricated by spin-coating onto pre-patterned electrodes, and ammonia gas sensing properties of the as-prepared PANI-coated MWNTs were studied. The results showed a good response and reproducibility towards ammonia at room temperature. In addition, PANI-coated MWNTs exhibited a linear response to ammonia in the range of 0.2–15ppm. The effects of the thickness of PANI coatings on the gas sensing properties were also investigated in detail. The results suggest a potential application of PANI-coated MWNTs in gas sensor for detecting ammonia.

Abstract:<p>Polymer sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI) can improve the response to ammonia. An ammonia sensor (BC/PANI-DBSA/PAMPS) with ultrafast, selective and sensitive detecting capability based on bacterial cellulose (BC) film with a three-dimensional nano-network structure is reported. The sensor consists of PANI coated BC nanofiber co-doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) and poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS), made by an <em>in situ</em> chemical oxidation polymerization route. The sensing response of the DBSA and PAMPS co-doping PANI composite in the range of 10−150 ppm ammonia vapor was greatly enhanced compared to sole doped composite, and showed high sensing selectivity towards ammonia, with a low detection limit of 200 ppb at room temperature. More importantly, the sensor display an excellent response (S = 6.1) and rapid response/recovery time (10.2 s/8.6 s) toward 100 ppm ammonia, and still showed excellent sensing capability after up to 60 days. Taken together, this work provides a facile and green approach to fabricate macroscale materials with ultra-fine nanoscale architecture for fast and sensitive gas detection.</p>

Abstract:By using spectral analysis in the visible/near-infrared region, we demonstrate a single waveguiding polyaniline/polystyrene nanowire for highly selective detection of gas mixtures with a NH3 detection limit on parts-per-million level and relative humidity sensing ranging from 37% to 84%. Abstract:With the increasing demand of environmental monitoring for toxic and odorous ammonia gas it is desired to develop specific green, cost-effective and in situ passive colorimetric alternatives to current complex instrumentations. In this work, we designed an ammonia gas sensor based on cholesteric liquid crystal films of copper(II)-doped cellulose nanocrystals (CNCCu(II)) whose structure, optical and sensing properties were investigated. The hybrid films using the low doping Cu(II) as a color-tuning agent inherited the chiral nematic signature and optical activity of CNCs, suggesting a strong chelation between copper ions and negatively charged CNCs. The sensing performance illustrates that the CNCCu(II)125 film was sensitive to ammonia gas which could merge into nematic layers of CNCs and trigger-sensed to copper ions chelated on CNCs, consequently arousing a red-shift of reflective wavelength as well as an effective colorimetric transition. Such a hybrid film is anticipated to boost a new gas sensing regime for fast and effective on-site qualitative investigations.

Abstract:Fe2O3 nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of the electrospun nanofibers containing FeCl3 and poly(vinyl butyral). As-prepared electrode was further dip-coated with water-dispersible polyaniline (PANI) to fabricate a resistance gas sensor based on Fe2O3/PANI nanocomposite. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposite were investigated by X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the nanocomposite sensor exhibited much higher response magnitude towards low concentration of NH3 (0.5-10.7 ppm) than the sensors based on either PANI or Fe2O3 at room temperature (similar to 20 degrees C), indicating an obvious synergetic effect. The nanocomposite sensor was featured with ultra high response magnitude (relative resistance change of similar to 3070% towards 10.7 ppm of NH3) and excellent selectivity towards NH3. A sensing mechanism has been put forward, which takes into account of the conducting network comprising of bulk PANI and composites of PANI and Fe2O3 nanosheets. It was proposed that the pin heterojunction established between Fe2O3 nanosheets and PANI coating played a major role in the highly desirable sensing performance of the composite. Abstract:Nanocomposites of SnO2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) were facilely prepared and their gas sensing properties towards low concentration of NH3 have been investigated at room temperature. Vertically aligned SnO2 nanosheets were in situ grown on the substrates via hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers containing SnCl2 precursors at a low temperature (135 degrees C), and coated with PPy by vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole. The SnO2 nanosheets and the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission microscopy. The nanocomposite sensors exhibited much higher response magnitude towards NH3 than the sensors based on PPy alone. The effect of the type of doping acids and polymerization time of pyrrole on the sensing properties of the nanocomposites was examined. The nanocomposite sensors revealed sensitive (sensitivity of 6.2%/ppm in the range of 1-10.7 ppm of NH3, detection limit of similar to 257 ppb), selective and repeatable response to NH3, and the sensing mechanism has been explored. This work could provide references for the facile preparation of advanced gas sensors based on in situ grown nanostructured metal-oxide semiconductors and their composites. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Facile Synthesis of Polyaniline/Carbon-Coated Hollow Indium Oxide Nanofiber Composite with Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Sensor at the Room Temperature

Abstract:Hollow carbon-coated In2O3 (C#In2O3) nanofibers were prepared using an efficiently combined approach of electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and hydrothermal process. The polyaniline (PANI)/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composites were synthesized used hollow C#In2O3 nanofibers worked as a core through the in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The morphology and crystalline structure of the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite were identified using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The gas-sensing performances of the fabricated PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor were estimated at room temperature, and the response value of the composite sensor with an exposure of 1 ppm NH3 was 18.2, which was about 5.74 times larger than that of the pure PANI sensor. The PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor was demonstrated to be highly sensitive to the detection of NH3 in the concentration range of 0.6~2.0 ppm, which is critical for kidney or hepatic disease detection from the human breath. This composite sensor also displayed superior repeatability and selectivity at room temperature with exposures of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH3. Because of the outstanding repeatability and selectivity to the detection of NH3 at 1.0 and 2.0 ppm confirmed in this investigation, the PANI/hollow C#In2O3 nanofiber composite sensor will be considered as a favorable gas-sensing material for kidney or hepatic disease detection from human breath.

Abstract:Exposure to high ammonia concentration can cause lung damages, burns to throat, nose, eyes, and respiratory tract, and can even cause death. Herein, we reported the development of colorimetric cellulose acetate nanofibers (CANF) to function as a colorimetric sensor for ammonia. Red cabbage plant is a natural source of spectroscopic probe known as anthocyanin (CYN). In order to create mordant/anthocyanin (M/CYN) nanoparticles, the CYN direct dyestuff was immobilized into cellulose acetate fibers in the presence of a mordant (potash alum). Anthocyanins have been suitable indicators for ammonia because of their small molecular size, water solubility, high sensitivity, and rapid detection. CIE Lab coordinates and absorption spectra were utilized to investigate a purple-to-green color change in the smart CANF fabric after being exposed to aqueous ammonia. The colorimetric cellulose acetate nanofibrous fabric displayed a detection limit range of 50–800 mg/L for aqueous ammonia. The anthocyanin probe showed hypsochromic alterations in absorption spectra, with a decrease in wavelength from 568 nm to 437 nm as a function of ammonia concentration in an aqueous solution. This could be explained by modifications to the molecular structure of anthocyanin as a result of intramolecular charge transfer. TEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles of M/CYN had diameters of 5–7 nm, whereas SEM images showed that the nanofibers of CANF had diameters of 50–150 nm. Moderate variations in stiffness and air-permeability were detected after immobilization of M/CYN into CANF.

A Flexible and Attachable Colorimetric Film Sensor for the Detection of Gaseous Ammonia

Abstract:A cost-effective, simple, flexible, and disposable colorimetric film sensor was constructed for the rapid detection of gaseous ammonia. The sensor was designed to consist of three layers, namely top, middle, and bottom layers of a polymeric elastomer. The bromocresol (BCG) indicator embedded in the middle layer of the film facilitated a change in color of the sensor from yellow-orange to blue upon exposure to gaseous ammonia. The color change was visually observed by the naked eye. The sensitivity of the sensor was verified by a successful detection of gaseous ammonia at concentrations from 4 to 235 ppm within 3 min, and the corresponding visual detection of ammonia gas was at a concentration as low as 11 ppm. The sensor also achieved a selective detection of gaseous ammonia over a variety of alkaline chemicals. The color of the sensor exposed to ammonia reverted from blue to the original yellow-orange upon subsequent exposure to the fume of acetic acid or aeration for 48 h, and it showed reliable performance for the detection of gaseous ammonia even after five repeated uses. The applicability of the sensor was validated by attaching it onto a safety helmet for a simulation of an industrial ammonia gas leak. The results indicated that our colorimetric film sensor is affordable, disposable, and reproducible, and can serve as an effective alternative for simple and rapid recognition of gaseous ammonia in environmental and air quality monitoring as well as in industrial applications.

Abstract:In this work, a novel electrochemical sensing platform was designed based on carbon cloth-supported polypyrrole-platinum nanosheets (Pt-PPy-CC) for detection of ammonia-nitrogen in water. The Pt-PPy-CC electrode was synthesized by growing PPy and Pt nanosheets on CC via electrochemical deposition and exhibited great electrocatalytic activity for oxidation reaction of ammonia, further showed great detection ability for ammonia-nitrogen with high sensitivity of 6.67 mu A mu M-1 and low detection limit of 0.24 mu M (sensitivity/noise = 3; S/N = 3). The electrochemical behavior of the sensing platform could be ascribed to the catalytic activity of Pt nanosheets, self-supported structure of electrode and high-quality Ohmic contact between p-type PPy and Pt. This study provided a new strategy to fabricate electrochemical sensor for ammonia-nitrogen.
A Cyanine Dye Encapsulated Porous Fibrous Mat for Naked-Eye Ammonia Sensing.

Abstract:Electrospun ultrathin fiber-based sensors are desirable because of their practicality and sensitivity. Ammonia-detection systems are in high demand in different areas, including the industrial and agricultural fields. However, current technologies rely on large and complex instruments that restrict their actual utilization. Herein, we report a flexible naked-eye ammonia sensor, the polylactic acid-cyanine (PLA-Cy) fibrous mat, which was fabricated by blending a carboxyl-functionalized cyanine dye (D1) into electospun PLA porous fibers. The sensing mat was shown to undergo a naked-eye-detectable color change from white to blue upon exposure to ammonia vapor. The mat showed high selectivity to ammonia gas with a detection limit of 3.3 ppm. Aggregated D1 was first encapsulated by PLA and was then ionized by NH3. These mechanisms were examined by photophysical studies and scanning electron microscopy. The aggregation-deaggregation process of D1 in the PLA-Cy fibrous mat led to the color change. This work provides a facile method for the naked-eye detection of ammonia and a novel strategy for the use of organic dyes in ammonia sensing.
Porous Flexible Polyaniline/polyvinylidene Fluoride Composite Film for Trace-Level NH3 Detection at Room Temperature

Abstract:Flexible, highly sensitive, selective, and room temperature ammonia (NH3) sensor based on porous polyaniline/polyvinylidene fluoride (PANI/PVDF) composite film was developed by an in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization process. The obtained flexible PANI/PVDF film showed a three-dimensional and hierarchical porous structure, which greatly enhanced the sensing performance of the PANI film sensor. It exhibited an excellent selectivity to NH3 at 25 degrees C with 110% response towards 5 ppm. Furthermore, the PANI/PVDF film sensor can detect 1 ppm NH3 (Response = 27%) along with excellent stability and response reproducibility. To 0.2 ppm NH3, the PANI/PVDF showed 6.5% response at 25 degrees C. Furthermore, it also showed a good linearity relationship between the response and the concentration of NH3. Additionally, the PANI/PVDF film exhibited excellent bending stability, showing very little response value fluctuation at different bending angles. This work shows that the proposed PANI/PVDF film is promising for detecting trace-level NH3 at room temperature, and can be applied in real-time environmental monitoring. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Electrospun polyaniline (PAni) fibers doped with different levels of (+)‐camphor‐10‐sulfonic acid (HCSA) are fabricated and evaluated as chemiresistive gas sensors. The experimental results, based on both sensitivity and response time, show that doped PAni fibers are excellent ammonia sensors and that undoped PAni fibers are excellent nitrogen dioxide sensors. The fibers exhibit changes in measured resistances up to 60‐fold for ammonia sensing, and more than five orders of magnitude for nitrogen dioxide sensing, with characteristic response times on the order of one minute in both cases. A time‐dependent reaction‐diffusion model is used to extract physical parameters from fitting experimental sensor data. The model is then used to illustrate the selection of optimal material design parameters for gas sensing by nanofibers.
