Abstract:Based on quantum chemical calculation, two cyano groups were introduced to an oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) unit to obtain a fluorophore with a low highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level and a strong emissive efficiency in an aggregate state. An alkyl-substituted phenylalaninamide moiety was linked to this fluorophore to produce a new gelator as a sensing material for the detection of organic amine vapors. Results revealed that the wet gels and xerogel nanofiber film generated strong emission. The fluorescence of the xerogel film could be rapidly and efficiently quenched by aromatic amine vapors at low concentrations. The detection limits for aniline, N-methylaniline, and N,N-dimethylaniline were as low as 21, 5, and 11 ppb, respectively. By contrast, the xerogel film emission was poorly sensitive to aliphatic amines because the gelator fluorophore possessed an appropriate HOMO energy level located between aromatic amines and aliphatic amines. Consequently, the sensing film became highly selective for aromatic amines.

Abstract:Two new low-molecular mass organic gelators (LMOGs) based on fluorenone and 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)benzamide auxiliary group (SOF and DOF) were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were investigated systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Both compounds exhibit 1π,π* transitions in the UV region, and broad, structureless intramolecular charge transfer (1ICT) absorption bands in the visible spectral region. Both compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature, which can be attributed to 1ICT state. In addition, the gel properties of the two compounds in 10 solvents was studied. Compared to SOF with a single auxiliary group, DOF bearing two auxiliary groups are easier to form gels in different solvents. Fluorescence behavior and sensing performance studies of DOF xerogel film obtained by self-assembling demonstrated that this film is chemically stable, and reversible and selective to the presence of aniline vapor through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The self-assembled properties of the LMOGs will be more conducive to the functionalization of photofunctional materials.
Strong Fluorescent Smart Organogel as a Dual Sensing Material for Volatile Acid and Organic Amine Vapors

Abstract:An L-phenylalanine derivative (C12PhBPCP) consisting of a strong emission fluorophore with benzoxazole and cyano groups is designed and synthesized to realize dual responses to volatile acid and organic amine vapors. The photophysical properties and self-assembly of the said derivative in the gel phase are also studied. C12PhBPCP can gelate organic solvents and self assemble into 1D nanofibers in the gels. UVNis absorption spectral results show H-aggregate formation during gelation, which indicates strong exciton coupling between fluorophores. Both wet gel and xero- gel emit strong green fluorescence because the cyano group suppresses fluorescence quenching in the self-assemblies. Moreover, the xerogel film with strong green fluorescence can be used as a dual chemosensor for quantitative detection of volatile acid and organic amine vapors with fast response times and low detection limits owing to its large surface area and amplified fluorescence quenching. The detection limits are 796 ppt and 25 ppb for gaseous aniline and trifluoroacetic acid (TEA), respectively.

Abstract:A naphthalimide-based fluorescent gelator (N1) containing an alkenyl group has been designed and characterized. This material is able to gelate alcohols via a precipitate-to-gel transformation when triggered with ultrasound for less than 2 min (S-gel). The gelation process in n-propanol was studied by means of absorption, fluorescence, and IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The fluorescence intensity of N1 decreased during the gelation process in a linear relationship with the sonication time. The S-gel of N1 could be used to sense aliphatic and aromatic amines by measuring the change in the signal output. For example, the addition of propylamine to the S-gel of N1 resulted in a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence intensity, accompanied by a gel-to-sol transition. On the contrary, when the S-gel of N1 was treated with aromatic amines such as aniline, fluorescence was quenched and there was no gel collapse. The sensing mechanisms were studied by (1)H NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering, SEM and spectroscopic experiments. It is proposed that isomerization of the alkenyl group of N1 from the trans to cis form occurs when the S-gel is treated with propylamine, resulting in a gel-sol transition. However, the aromatic aniline molecules prefer to insert into the gel networks of N1 via hydrogen-bonding and charge-transfer interactions, maintaining the gel state. As potential applications, testing strips of N1 were prepared to detect aniline.

Abstract:Novel gelators based on isomeric pyridine-hydrazide derivatives, namely, G1, G2, and G3 were successfully synthesized and characterized, among which G2 significantly surpassed G1 and G3, indicating that the position of the pyridine nitrogen remarkably affected the resulting gelation properties. Most interestingly, G2 was utilized as a naked eye chemosensor for many analytes such as F, Cu2+, and Fe3+. Among the tested anions, only F showed a notable change from transparent gel to white emulsion. And the detection limit of G2 for F is 8.483 x 10 6 M. Among the tested metal ions, G2-DCM gel could enrich Cu2+ or Fe3+ in water resources by forming stable metallogels. Furthermore, the different color changed in the organogel-to-metallogel transformation process could be also observed. Hence, the G2-DCM gel could act as a multi-stimuli-responsive sensor for detecting F, Cu2+, and Fe3+, and a promising smart soft material for enriching Cu2+ or Fe3+ in water resources.

Abstract:Novel low-molecular-weight organogelators (LMOGs) 1 and 2 derived from glycine-glutamic-acids (GGA) based dipeptide were synthesized. The difference on the chemical structures between 1 and 2 resulted in some interesting variations on their gelling behavior and fluoride anion (F-) responsive properties. Gelator 1 could gel aromatic solvents effectively, while gelator 2 possessed excellent gelation ability in protic solvents. Upon the addition of 0.5 equiv. F-, the toluene gel of 1 transformed into solution due to the disruption of the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding, whereas the alcohol gel of 2 was stable and preserved even by introducing 20 equiv. F-. Interestingly, 2 could be regarded as an efficient receptor for F- in acetonitrile (MeCN) solution. After the addition of F-, the fluorescent emission band of 2 red-shifted from 360 to 420 nm with the emission intensity enhanced drastically; the intensity of the CD signal decreased and almost disappeared after addition of 2 equiv. F-. These changes were due to the conformational change and hydrogen-bonding interaction between urea groups and F-. The results indicated that GGA-based 1 and 2 might represent potential sensor materials for the naked-eye detection of F-.

Abstract:A phenyl and a 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl ring, each bearing a tris(n-dodecyloxy) benzylamine moiety via an amide bond, were tethered together through an imine linkage to give a non-covalent synthon (imine 1) with a strong capacity of supramolecular self-assembly. Gelation was observed in several organic solutions, within which fibrous aggregate morphologies were visualized by SEM and AFM. Both arene-perfluoroarene stacking and amide-amide hydrogen bonding interactions were responsible for such self-assembly behaviours, as evidenced by H-1 NMR studies. Hydrolysis of the imine linkage catalyzed by acid strongly weakened the intermolecular interactions, resulting in dissociation of the low molecular weight gelator and giving rise to an acid-mediated gel-sol transition.

Abstract:Two novel bent-shaped π-organogelators 6a and 6b having different terminal pyridine rings as responsive sites were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. A subtle difference in the position of the N atom at the pyridine ring greatly affected their fluorescence and gelation properties. 6b showed remarkably stronger fluorescence both in solution and in the solid state as compared to 6a. Theoretical calculation revealed a clear discrepancy in the electron distribution between them. Furthermore, driven by π–π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction, both 6a and 6b can gelate several organic solvents with different polarities. Rheological studies, spectroscopic tests and powder X-ray diffraction showed that 6a displayed a closer stacking mode leading to stronger gel robustness. The xerogel films of 6a and 6b were prepared and utilized to detect acid vapours. Both of them can fulfil the detection of acid vapours through a distinct fluorescence change which could be seen by the naked eye under a UV lamp, but with different sensing modes. A rare gel to gel transformation was also observed upon exposure to acid vapours accompanied by a morphological change.
Multi-stimuli-responsive Chiral Organogels Based on Peptide Derivatives.

Abstract:A series of chiral aryl amide compounds bearing peptide pendants have been investigated as low molecular weight gelators. A mechanistic study reveals that complementary hydrogen bonding from peptide pendants is the main driving force for the formation of organogels. This new class of organogels can exhibit multi-stimuli-responsive behavior upon applying (1) thermal, (2) pH, (3) enantiomeric purity, and (4) fluoride anion stimuli. Enantiomeric purity as a new external stimulus displays sensitive stimuli-responsiveness; only 0.02 equiv. of the enantiomer can completely disassemble the gel aggregate. They will serve as excellent smart materials with potential applications in chiral sensors, recognition, and separation.

Abstract:We reported here a new platform of supramolecular hydrogels crosslinked by the cooperation of metal-ligand coordination and hydrophobic interaction. An arylhydrazone-base ligand-terminal poly(ethylene glycol) (2SBH-PEG) was synthesized and formed small micelles in an aqueous environment. Addition of Ni2+ connected the low molecular weight 2SBH-PEG into a metallopolymer via metal-ligand coordination and led to micelle aggregation, resulting in gelation due to the enhancement of hydrophobic interaction. The forming hydrogel, Ni-PEGel, exhibited rapid self-healing ability and reversible pH-responsive property. Because of the containing metal coordination bond, it was also sensitive to the strong competing ligands, like EDTA and pyridine. In addition, Ni-PEGel showed colorimetric changes when exposed to biogenic amines (BAs) vapor. The color development of Ni-PEGel towards BAs making it a good candidate in monitoring food spoilage.

Abstract:Two L-phenylalanine derivatives with 5,8-bis(2-(carbazol-3-yl)vinyl)quinoxaline (PCQ) and 5,8-bis[2-(carbazol-3-yl)]-2,3-dimethylquinoxaline (DCQ) as fluorophores were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were measured and compared. The two compounds were found to gelate some organic solvents and self-assemble into 1D nanofibers in gels. The wet gel of PCQ emitted a weak orange fluorescence, but the DCQ gel had a strong green one. This result can be due to the presence of two methyl groups and the nonplanar conformation of fluorophore in DCQ. The gel film of DCQ also showed significantly stronger fluorescence than that of PCQ. Thus, the wet gel and xerogel film of DCQ were selected to study their sensing properties to acids. The yellow wet gel of DCQ transformed into a brown sol upon the addition of 0.2equiv trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), accompanied by emission quenching. The xerogel film of DCQ rapidly responded to volatile acids, such as TFA, HCl, and HOAc. The fluorescence of the xerogel film was gradually quenched with increased concentration of volatile acid vapors. The fibrous film exhibited low detection limits for volatile acid. The detection limits of the thin films for TFA, HCl, and HOAc reached 43, 122, and 950ppb, respectively.
A tripodal stimuli responsive self-assembly system and its application for detecting of organic amines, acids and Cu2+ ions aqueous solution

Abstract:A novel fluorescent tripodal low-molecular weight gelator (LMWG) with the triaminoguanidinium cation unit as the center and triphenylamine groups modifying was designed and synthesized. The unique gelators (X) formed microfibers with different size and distribution characteristics in different solvents, which was closely crucial to the stability of gels. The self-assembly structures were performed characterization analyses by scanning electron microscope (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), rheology, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). It was found that the most stable gel XMG was formed in DMSO-CH3OH (1:9, v/v), which had the gelation-induced fluorescence enhancement characteristic and the fibers with small and thick structure features, uniform dispersion as well as high distribution density. In addition, XMG can be used as a multi-stimulus response fluorescent gel material to make special responses to copper ions, TEA and TFA directly and indirectly. The lowest limit of quantitation (LOQ) for TEA and TFA as well as the minimum limit of detection (LOD) for Cu2+ were in the range of 8.24 × 10−10, 9.75 × 10−10 and 5.39 × 10−10 M respectively. The gelator possesses the potential of application in the field of detection chemical, environmental and biological samples.

Abstract:An organogelator named N-4-dodecyloxyphenyl-N′-4-((4-nitrophenyl)azophenyl) benzohydrazide (1) was synthesized and was tested to gel aromatic solvent giving stable gels. SEM images revealed that the xerogels consisted of fibers, within which molecules self-assembled to a layered structure, while fibers entangled to 3D network. Both UV–vis spectra and FT-IR studies showed that the major driving force for the formation of fibers was the intermolecular hydrogen bondings, π–π interactions and the microphase segregation between the rigid-rod core and the flexible chains. The gels exhibited gel–sol transition and color change upon addition of anion (F− and AcO−) stimuli.

Abstract:Based on Schiff base unit with/without a perfluoroalkyl group, novel multi-functional compounds 1 and 2 were proven to be able to form gels with different solvents. The difference in the molecular structure of compounds 1 and 2 was the presence of a perfluoroalkyl chain. The self-assembly pattern was studied by the employment of rheological analysis, UV–vis absorption, fluorescence spectrum, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The gelation behaviors showed a sensitive and selective "turn-off" fluorescence response with Cu 2+ . Due to the protonation or deprotonation of compounds 1 and 2 with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or triethylamine (TEA), the xerogel films which were prepared from DMSO:H 2 O (9:1, v/v) at 5 wt% presented the emission quenching and recovery upon TFA and TEA vapors. In this sense, the work will open up a novel pathway to detect Cu 2+ , TFA, and TEA in the environment, using stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect.

Abstract:Being different from common sensing molecules existing as monomer in solution, the gelators as sensing molecules self-assembled together in gels. Therefore, the interaction strength between gelators is believed as an important factor for gels to recognize selectively anions. In this paper, we choose two gelators, presenting similar binding sites for anions, but different strengths in intermolecular interaction. Moreover, their anion responsive behaviors in organogels were examined by observing phase state and measuring UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. We found that the organogel formed by 2 with strong intermolecular interaction could selectively recognize fluoride anion. However, the gels of 1 could be transformed into sol phases by addition of F-, Cl-, Br-, AcO- and H2PO4- because of the small aggregate constant of 1 in o-dichlorobenzene, presenting poor selectivity. Moreover, their UV-vis and emission spectra acting as testing methods also suggested the same conclusion.

Abstract:An D-A-D gelator (DTCQ) was designed and synthesized using 2,3-dimethyl-5,8-di(thiophen-2-yl)quinoxaline and N-alkyl 3-aminocarbazole units as acceptor and donor, respectively, which were linked by a single bond. The compound could gelate several solvents, such as benzyl alcohol, aniline, acetophenone, and o-dichlorobenzene, as well as self-assemble into one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers in gel phase. The absorption and infrared spectra of the gels indicated that π-π interactions between aromatic moieties, intermolecular hydrogen bonds between amide units, and van der Waals forces were the driving forces for the formation of 1D self-assemblies and gel. DTCQ gel was red and emits red fluorescence because it has a strong absorption band at 487 nm and an emissive band at 620 nm. Moreover, DTCQ and a fullerene carboxylic acid formed two-component gel, in which the two compounds developed a hydrogen bond complex and self-assembled into 1D nanofibers with closely connected p- and n-channels. The nanofibrous xerogel film can rapidly generate a photocurrent under visible-light radiation through electron transfer from the gelator to fullerene, and then, the excellent exciton separation and charge transfer to two electrodes.
