Abstract:A series of Mg(Ca)Zr-doped acid-base bifunctional mesoporous silica were synthesized to study the impact of the one-step or two-step impregnation method on material structure. The two-step method seems to be a better way to synthesize metal-based functionalized catalyst and their catalytic performance is investigated using deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction as the probe reaction. The coexisting dual active sites and suitable designing routes endowed highly efficient (Conv. >99.6%, Sel. >99.8%) and robust stability (10 consecutive cycles) of these materials. The present process succeeded in preparing catalysts decorated with acid-base sites by doping acidic and alkali metal species rather than grafting organic groups.
Impregnation synthesis of a novel macroporous silica-based crown ether polymeric material modified by 1-dodecanol and its adsorption for strontium and some coexistent metals

Abstract:4,4′,(5′)-Di-(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6(DtBuCH18C6) is a chelating agent having high selectivity mostly for Sr(II). To significantly reduce its leakage by molecular modification, a macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6 polymeric composite (DtDo/SiO2–P) was synthesized. It was performed by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol molecules into the pores of the SiO2–P particles utilizing an advanced vacuum sucking technique. The adsorption of a few fission and non-fission products Sr(II), Ba(II), Cs(I), Ru(III), Mo(VI), Na(I), K(I), Pd(II), La(III), and Y(III) onto DtDo/SiO2–P was investigated. It was done by examining the effects of contact time and the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1–5.0M at 298K. At the optimum concentration of 2.0M HNO3, DtDo/SiO2–P exhibited strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) great over all of the tested elements, which showed very weak or almost no adsorption except Ba(II). Meanwhile, It was found that the quantity of total organic carbon (TOC) leaked from DtDo/SiO2–P in 2.0M HNO3, 187.5ppm, was lower than 658.4ppm that leaked from DtBuCH18C6/SiO2–P, which was not modified. This was ascribed to the effective association of DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol through intermolecular interaction. The reduction of DtBuCH18C6 leakage by molecular modification with 1-dodecanol was achieved. It was of great benefit to application of DtDo/SiO2–P in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II), one of the main heat generators, from high level liquid waste (HLLW) in reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel in the MAREC (Minor Actinides Recovery from HLLW by Extraction Chromatography) process developed recently.
Preparation of Macroporous Silica-Based Crown Ether Materials for Strontium Separation

Abstract:To develop a separation process of Sr(II), a macroporous silica-based 4,4′,(5′)-di(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6) polymeric material, (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P, was synthesized by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-octanol into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles support. DtBuCH18C6 was modified with 1-octanol through hydrogen bonding. The adsorption of simulant elements of some typical fission products Ru(III), Pd(II), Ba(II), Mo(VI), La(III), Y(III), Sr(II), Cs(I) and those of non-fission products Na(I) and K(I) onto (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P were studied at 298 K. The effects of the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1–5.0 M and contact time on the adsorption were investigated. (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P showed excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) over all of the tested metals except Ba(II). Partitioning of Sr(II) from a 2.0 M HNO3 solution containing ~5.0 × 10−3 M of the tested metals was conducted utilizing (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P packed column. Pd(II), Mo(VI), Y(III), La(III), Ru(III), K(I), Cs(I), and Na(I) showed no adsorption and flowed into effluent along with 2.0 M HNO3. Sr(II) was retained on (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P and was eluted effectively by H2O, while Ba(II) showed similar elution behavior. The bleeding of total organic carbon leaked from (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P was evaluated. It was demonstrated that the macroporous silica-based (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P materials are promising in separation of Sr(II) from high level radioactive waste.

Abstract:A macroporous silica-based 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6)-imprepated polymeric composite, (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P, was synthesized by molecular modification of DtBuCH18C6 with I-octanol through hydrogen bonding. This was achieved by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-octanol molecules in the pores of macroporous SiO(2)-P particles possessing a mean pore diameter of 50 pill. The adsorption of some fission and non-fission products contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) such as Ru(III), Mo(VI), Pd(II), Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), La(III) and Y(III) onto (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P was investigated at 298 K. The effects of contact time and HNO(3) concentration within the range 0.1-5.0 M were examined. Increasing the HNO(3) concentration from 0.1 M to 2.0 M led to a significant increase in the adsorption of Sr(II), followed by a decrease when the HNO(3) concentration yeas increased further to 5.0 M. The optimum concentration of HNO(3) in the adsorption of Sr(11) onto (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P was determined as 2.0 M. For the other ions examined with the exception of Ba(II), very weak or almost non-existent adsorption capacities were observed at all HNO(3) concentrations. The leaching of total organic carbon (TOC) from (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P into the aqueous phase was evaluated. Over the HNO3 concentration range 0.1-3.0 M, the quantity of TOC leached was ca. 40 ppm compared with 355.8-373.3 ppm at HNO(3) concentrations above 4.0 M. Significant reduction of TOC leaching from the macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6-impregnated polymeric composite was achieved in 2.0 M HNO3. Such behaviour could be of great benefit in using (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2),-P for the partitioning of Sr(II) from HLW by extraction chromatography.

Abstract:A dihydromyrcenol type of silane coupling agent,[2,6-dimethyl-8-(triethoxysilyl)octan-2-ol](DHMS) is prepared through hydrosilylation reaction of dihydromyrcenol with triethoxysilane using platinum complexes(Pt-PMVS) as a catalyst.The target product and by-products were characterized by means of GC-MS and 1HNMR.The effect of reaction conditions,such as solvent,reaction time,reaction temperature and Pt content,on the reaction products were investigated.Under the optimized reaction conditions,side reactions could be curbed effectively,and the DHMS was obtained with a yield of up to 69.7% and with its purity higher than 98% in weight.

Abstract:25,27-Bis(1-hexyloxy)-calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (HexylCalix[4]C6) was synthesized. A new macroporous silica-based composite material, HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2, was prepared through impregnation and immobilization of HexylCalix[4]C6 into the SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of 17 species of typical metals onto HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in the range of 0.3-5.0 M HNO3 was investigated. The material exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals except for Rb(I) and Pd(II). The optimum HNO3 concentration and the adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) onto the material were discussed. The solubility of HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in aqueous phase was evaluated by total organic carbon (TOC). The technical feasibility of application of Hexyl Calix[4]C6@SiO2 in Cs(I) separation was confirmed.

Abstract:Removal of Cs isotopes, one of the heat generators present in used fuel/reprocessing waste, is one of the most challenging obstacles in the disposal of these materials. For this purpose, a new silica-calix[4]crown material, CBisC6@SiO2, has been prepared. The material was created coupling a symmetric calixcrown derivative CBisC6 into the pores and channels of the SiO2-P particles through vacuum hybridization and immobilization. SEM, Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA-DSC and XPS were used to characterize the structure of the final material. The adsorption of Cs and some representative metals onto CBisC6@SiO2 has been investigated in the range of 0.4 to 6.0 M HNO3. CBisC6@SiO2 showed strong adsorption ability and selectivity for Cs over all of others except for Rb in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption mechanism of Cs was verified using XRD and FT-IR spectra. The separation of Cs from other waste materials by CBisC6@SiO2 was performed through six adsorption-desorption cycles. The removal efficiency of Cs was 99.5%, while other fission products were weakly absorbed except for Rb with the removal efficiency of 85.3%. A nearly quantitative removal of Cs by CBisC6@SiO2 was achieved.

Abstract:Nano-silica hybrid asymmetric membranes were prepared and characterized.The effects of the preparation methods and the character of the silica on their properties were investigated.The experimental results showed that the nano-silica hybrid membranes by the sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) were provided with the strengthened mechanical properties,well modified structure and good gas separation performance as compared with the hybrid membrane produced by blending procedure and the polymer membrane.Moreover,the loading amount of the inorganic phase was another important factor on the properties of the hybrid membrane,and the comprehensive performance was obtained when the addition amount of TEOS was around 30% based on the polymer content.

Abstract:Porous Silica Gel was synthesized via Sol-Gel process with phase separation using TEOS as raw materials,thermal stability,microstructure and of which were studied by the heat treatment and by means of IR,TG-DTA and SEM.The adsorption property of porous silica gel for cerium ions in solution was studied by discontinuous process,providing some references to the processing of high-level liquid waste.The experimental results show that the synthesized porous silica gel with good thermal stability and high porosity has good adsorption properties for cerium ions in solution;For given initial concentration of cerium ions,with increasing the rate of solid to liquid the equilibrium adsorption capacity decreases while the equilibrium adsorption rate increases and the equilibrium adsorption ratio increases afterwards decreases when the rate of solid to liquid is 3:500.

Abstract:A series of dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6) homologues containing different alkyl substituents were synthesized for a comparative study of the extraction ability towards strontium. The synthesis and the structure characterization of the intermediates and the products were detailed. The crown ether homologues were labeled as CX-DCH18C6 (X=3∼7), where the X represents the number of the carbon atoms in the alkyl substituents. The extraction ability of the CX-DCH18C6 samples towards strontium in solvent extraction system was investigated. The substituent effect of the samples was discussed, and the factors affecting the separation such as solvent, acidity and initial metal concentration were examined.

Abstract:Silica gels composited with undecatungstochromoferrous acid have been prepared by the sol–gel method. FT-IR spectra and SEM declared that the Keggin structure characteristic of the Fe(H2O)CrW11O396− anion was found in the silica gel skeleton. The change of characteristic peaks in IR spectra was analyzed. XRD pattern showed that the gel was amorphous. The gel exhibited considerably high-proton conductivity, which increased from 1.88×10−3 to 1.11×10−2Scm−1 with the increase of the content of undecatungstochromoferrous acid at 20°C.

Abstract:A novel kind of polysiloxane resin functionalized with dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6) was synthesized through a post-modification approach. The DCH18C6 moieties bearing amino groups were firstly prepared, followed by covalent grafting to a silica precursor P-(CH(2))(3)-Cl (Where P represents a 3-dimentional polymerized silica matrix) based on nucleophilic substitution reaction. (29)Si and (13)C solid-state NMR, FT-IR, XPS, TGA, ESEM and elemental analysis were employed to systematically characterize the structure, thermal property and surface morphology of the functionalized resin. The results indicated that the DCH18C6 ligands were successfully bonded to the polysiloxane resin with a satisfactory grafting degree (33.6wt.%). Due to the robust organosilica framework and the covalent immobilization of the ligands, the functionalized resin had excellent thermal stability and acid resistance. Batch experiments showed that the resin could effectively separate Sr(II) in high acidity mediums. The distribution coefficient (K(d)) of 43.6cm(3)/g could be achieved in 5.0mol/L HNO(3) solution. The influences of contact time and acidity of HNO(3) on the resin's extraction performance were examined. The reusability and the selectivity to Sr(II) over interference ions were investigated. The DCH18C6-functionalized resin might be potentially applied for the radiostrontium removal in the high level liquid waste (HLLW).

Abstract:(R)-6,6'-Bis(triethoxysilylethen-2-yl)-2,2'-binaphtho-20-crown-6 (precursor, R-2) derived from (R)-2, 2'-BINOL derivative was-synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Heck reaction of (R)-6, 6'-dibromo-2, 2'-binaphtho-20-crown-6 (R-1) intermediate with vinyltriethoxysilane. The hydrolysis and polycondensation of the precursor gave rise to the corresponding xerogel. Both precursor and xerogel were analysed by NMR, FT-IR, UV, CD spectra, fluorescent spectroscopy, polarimetry and elemental analysis. The precursor and xerogel can emit strong blue fluorescence and are expected to have the potential application in the separation of chiral molecules as fluorescent sensor. The precursor exhibits strong Cotton effect in its circular dichroism (CD) spectrum indicating that it is a highly rigid structure.
Silica based click-dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether high performance liquid chromatography stationary phase and its application in separation of fullerenes

Abstract:Crown ether is a type of typical macrocyclic polyether compounds, which can produce strong interactions with cationic species, such as metal ions and protonated amines due to its cavity structure and the strong electronegative effect of heteroatoms on the crown ether ring. In this paper, a type of silica based crown ether stationary phase was prepared by covalently bonding dibenzo-18-crown 6-ether (DBCE) on silica gel via copper (I) catalyzed azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC). The tetraazido DBCE was rapidly prepared by bromomethylation and subsequent azido substitution of DBCE. Finally, this key intermediate was covalently bonded to silica beads by click chemistry to get click-DBCE. Its structure was confirmed by FT-IR and elemental analysis, and the structures of all related intermediates were confirmed by NMR, IR and MS spectra. The crown ether based stationary phase showed good chromatography characteristics and column efficiency (up to 43,553 plates m-1 theoretical plate number is obtained in the case of fluoranthene) under reverse phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) model. The primary chromatographic evaluation showed that click-DBCE displayed better chromatography efficiency than commercial C18 stationary phase (THERMO BDS HYPERSIL), when they were applied in the separation of regio-isomers of benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and macrolide pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, this stationary phase could also be used to separate fullerenes under normal phase mode, and in this case, 1-chloronaphthalene was suitable additive for improving chromatographic separation ability.

Abstract:Silica gel containing 64 wt.% undecatungstocobaltoaluminic acid was prepared by means of sol–gel method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and infrared (IR) spectrum revealed that the Keggin structure characteristic of [Al(H2O)CoW11O39]7− anion was present in the silica gel skeleton. The change of the characteristic peaks in the infrared spectrum was investigated. Thermogravimetry (TG) curve shows that there are three steps of weight loss. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve shows that the thermal stability of the gel is lower than that of pure undecatungstocobaltoaluminic acid. The silica gel exhibits considerably high proton conductivity of 1.30×10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature (14 °C).

Abstract:The extraction ability of crown-ethers has been studied with respect to cesium and strontium from nitric acid solutions in heavyweight polar organic solvents: chloroform; 1,2-dichloroethane; bis(2-chloroethyl)ether; nitrobenzene; 1,1,7-trihydrododecafluoroheptyl alcohol. Using bis(2-chloroethyl)ether as a new polar solvent in the extraction processes of dibenzo21-crown-7 and 4,4' (5')-ditretbutyldibenzo-18-crown-6, rather high distribution coefficients of cesium are achieved (DCs) from solutions with a nitric acid concentration of 1-5 mol / dm3. In the extraction of dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 strontium, the highest DSr values were obtained, using chlorine-substituted hydrocarbons and bis(2-chloroethyl)ether with an extraction maximum of 1-3 mol / dm3 HNO3, depending on the diluent used. Extraction systems based on selective crown-ethers in a solvent mixture for the joint extraction of cesium and strontium from chemically complex nitric acid solutions are proposed.

Abstract:Zinc isotope fractionation has been studied in different cavities of crown ether resins that were synthesized in porous silica beads. Displacement chromatography was performed, as a breakthrough manner, in glass columns by feeding in a zinc chloride solution. From the mass analysis of effluents, the heavier isotopes of zinc were enriched at the beginning of the zinc adsorption band. The front maximum enrichment (1.0168), separation coefficient (8.1 x 10(-4)), and smaller HETP (0.205 cm) for the isotopic pair Zn-68/Zn-64 were obtained with the use of the benzo-15-crown-5 resin. Zinc isotope fractionation was obviously affected by the cavity size of the crown ethers.

Abstract:A kind of hydrophobic zeolitic monolith were prepared by mixing HY/ZSM-5, additives and water, followed by processes of extrusion and drying, and then hydrophobic modification with SiCl4. The structures and properties of the adsorbent were examined by nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurement, XRD, and benzene adsorption experiment. The results show that those adsorbents possess hierarchical pore structures and excellent hydrophobicity.
