Abstract:CuI-nanoparticles-catalyzed cyanation of aryl bromides under mild conditions has been developed with K4[Fe(CN)6]as the cyanation reagent using water as the solvent in the presence of KI and N,N'-dimethylethyl-enediamine.This method was applicable to a wide range of substrates and more economical and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:Aryl nitriles can be efficiently synthesized through transition-metal-mediated cyanation of aryl halides, arenes, aryl boronic acids, and so on. Among those most commonly used transition-metals, copper catalysts are surely much more inexpensive and easier to handle, compared to any other metal catalysts. Considering the high-efficiency of copper catalysts in the activation of C–X, C–H, and C–B bond as well as in the formation of C–CN bond, this Letter summarizes various copper-mediated cyanations based on the different kinds of cyanide reagents, such as metal cyanides, potassium hexacyanoferrate(II), acetone cyanohydrins, DDQ, AIBN, benzyl cyanide, malononitrile, nitromethane, and DMF. Our group’s recent contributions to this area are also demonstrated.

Abstract:An efficient copper iodide mediated cyanation of arylboronic acids and aryl iodides with ethyl (ethoxymethylene)cyanoacetate as cyanating agent has been developed. The reaction involves a C(sp(2))-CN bond cleavage and tolerates a wide range of functional groups, affording the corresponding aryl nitriles in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract:The copper-catalyzed cyanation of arenes using benzyl nitrile as a cyanide anion surrogate furnishes aromatic nitriles in moderate to good yields. The cascade process involves a copper-catalyzed aerobic C-H oxidation, a retro-cyanohydrination, and a copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H functionalization.

Abstract:Copper-mediated cyanation of aryl C-H bond with removable bidenate auxiliary as a directing group has been developed, in which green and cheap acetonitrile is used as the "CN" source. By switching the reaction conditions, the C-H cyanated products and N-Ar-phthalimides can be provided in acceptable yields with high chemoselectivity, respectively. The use of quaternary ammonium salt is essential for cyanation reaction.

Abstract:A method for the efficient and reliable synthesis of aryl nitriles via the Cu2O-catalyed cross-coupling of aryl boronic acids or esters and TMSCN is presented. A broad range of substrates decorated by electron-rich and deficient, sterically very congested, and labile functionalities were tolerated. Moreover, the reaction can proceed under mild conditions at room temperature. These advantages paired with the use of cheap, readily available, and halogen-free Cu2O as catalysts make the protocol an appealing option for aryl cyanations.

Abstract:N-Arylation of (benz)imidazoles and amines with diarylborinic acids as cost-effective aryl source has been efficiently effected via Cu(OAc)2-catalyzed Chan-Lam coupling in assistance of tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) in methanol and pyridine (Py) in dichloromethane, respectively, in air at room temperature. The diarylborinic acids could be well accommodated by the Chan-Lam coupling oxidative conditions containing a proper combination of bases and solvents. The steric hindrance appeared to affect the copper-catalyzed N-arylation using the high-order arylboron reagent more significantly than the electronic factors, especially for low reactive anilines and aliphatic amines.

Abstract:Organoboron compounds are widely utilized in organic synthesis for their diverse reactivity, modular preparation, and stability compared to other classes of organometallic reagents. While organoboron species are commonly employed as nucleophiles in cross-coupling reactions, their potential as racemic building blocks in enantioconvergent transformations remains largely untapped. Herein, we demonstrate the direct utilization of alkylboronic pinacol esters in intermolecular enantioconvergent transformations. Specifically, this work describes the development and mechanistic study of an enantioconvergent deborylative cyanation enabled by Cu catalysis. This method imparts a high degree of enantioselectivity and tolerates a wide range of common functional groups and heterocycles. The reaction is proposed to proceed through a radical-relay mechanism. Aniline-assisted homolysis of the carbon–boron bond results in prochiral alkyl radicals that are functionalized by in situ generated Cu(II)(CN)2 species in an enantioselective fashion. The Cu(II)(CN)2 intermediate was characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and its electronic structure was probed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Computational studies were carried out to corroborate the proposed radical-relay mechanism.

Abstract:The cyanation of arylboronic acids by using acetonitrile as the "CN" source has been achieved under a Cu(cat.)/TEMPO system (TEMPO=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine N-oxide). The broad substrate scope includes a variety of electron-rich and electron-poor arylboronic acids, which react well to give the cyanated products in high to excellent yields. Mechanistic studies reveal that TEMPO-CH2 CN, generated in situ, is an active cyanating reagent, and shows high reactivity for the formation of the CN(-) moiety. Moreover, TEMPO acts as a cheap oxidant to enable the reaction to be catalytic in copper.

Abstract:A facile and efficient transformation of arylboronic acids to their corresponding aryl thiocyanates has been successfully developed. Based on the CuCl-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reaction between arylboronic acids and trimethylsilylisothiocyanate (TMSNCS) under oxygen atmosphere, the transformation can be readily conducted at ambient temperature. The newly-developed protocol provided a competitive synthetic approach to aryl thiocyanates that can tolerate a broad range of reactive functional groups and/or strong electron-withdrawing groups.

Abstract:We report herein an efficient synthesis of 3‐arylbenzothiazolin‐2‐one compounds. First, substituted benzothiazoles can be smoothly oxidized to benzothiazolin‐2‐one derivatives in the presence of CuCl2 and trifluoroacetic anhydride. Secondly, the Cu2S‐catalyzed N‐arylation of benzothiazolin‐2‐one with arylboronic acids yields a series of novel 3‐aryl benzothiazolin‐2‐one derivatives. The method provides good yields for a variety of substrates and shows good compatibility with functional groups. The usefulness of the skeleton was further illustrated by the derivatisation of 3‐aryl‐benzothiazolin‐2‐one. Mechanistic studies suggest that the oxidation of benzothiazole may undergo a free radical reaction process.
