Abstract:Bumby proved that the only positive solutions to the quartic Diophantine equation 3x 4 − 2y 2 = 1 are (x, y) = (1, 1), (3, 11). In this paper, we extend this result and prove that if the class number of the field $${{\rm Q}(\sqrt{1-3a^{2}})}$$ is not divisible by 2, the equation 3a 2 x 4 − By 2 = 1 has at most two solutions. However, both solutions occur in only one case, a = 1, b = 2, as solved by Bumby. The proof utilizes the law of quadratic reciprocity that seems very rare in solving Diophantine equations, and the solution will be also obtained effectively through the proof when it exists.

Abstract:By using the elementary method of recurrent sequence,congruent formula and quadratic residue,the authors prove that the diophantine equation x3+27=139y2 has only the integer solutions(x,y)=(-3,0),(13,±4).In the process of proving the conclusion,the authors also prove that the diophantine equation x3+1=417y2 has only the integer solution(x,y)=(-1,0),and then give all integer solutions of x3+27=139y2.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:We develop a novel method to completely solve the 3-term partial exponential Diophantine equation that represents a generalization of the standard discrete logarithm problem. Our method not only reveals the internal structure of the equation's solution and yields a numerical algorithm to solve it systematically, but also provides an alternative approach to the discrete logarithm problem.

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract:In this note we consider the title Diophantine equation from both theoretical as well as experimental point of view. In particular, we prove that for $k=4, 6$ and each choice of the signs our equation has infinitely many co-prime positive integer solutions. For $k=5, 7$ and all choices of the signs we computed all co-prime positive integer solutions $(x, y, a, b)$ satisfying the condition $\op{max}\{a, b\}\leq 50000$.
