Abstract:Tuning heterogeneous nucleation of CaCO3 could enable new bio-mimic structures and address inorganic fouling in desalination and petroleum industries. However, few fundamental principles exist to guide surface modification for controlling this complex nucleation process. Additionally, industrial applications often require high stability for harsh operational conditions and nanoscale thickness for low heat transfer resistance. Such robust nanoscale coating materials have not yet been reported, motivating the current study of durable ultrathin (<= 100 nm) organic covalent networks synthesized by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). The low surface energy of the iCVD films results in a high energy barrier for CaCO3 heterogeneous nucleation, leading to slow kinetics with extended induction periods. We also found the dominant role of electrochemical oxidation on Cu/Ni surfaces in affecting heterogeneous nucleation of CaCO3 in a hot aqueous environment. With excellent stability and passivation capability, our iCVD coatings effectively inhibit corrosion-induced heterogeneous nucleation, thus reducing the amount of CaCO3 fouling by up to 14 times at 110 degrees C.
Continuous Processing of Phase-Change Materials into Uniform Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared-triggered Drug Release

Abstract:We report a method based on interfacial, anti-solvent-induced precipitation in a fluidic device for the continuous and scalable processing of phase-change materials (PCMs) into uniform nanoparticles with controlled diameters in the range of 10-100 nm. A eutectic mixture of lauric acid and stearic acid, with a well-defined melting point at 39 °C, serves as an example to demonstrate the concept. In the fluidic device, a coaxial flow is created by introducing a PCM solution in ethanol and a lipid solution in water (the anti-solvent) as the focused and focusing phases, respectively. The formation of lipid-capped PCM nanoparticles is governed by diffusion-controlled mixing of ethanol and water. During the production, both doxorubicin (DOX, an anticancer drug) and indocyanine green (ICG, a near-infrared dye) can be readily loaded into the PCM nanoparticles to give a smart drug release system. Upon irradiation with near-infrared light, the photothermal heating caused by ICG can melt the PCM and thereby trigger the release of DOX. This work not only provides a new technique for the continuous processing of PCMs and other soft materials into uniform nanoparticles with controlled sizes but also demonstrates a biocompatible system for controlled release and related applications.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced spinodal decomposition was conducted in glycolic solutions of phloroglucinol/formaldehyde copolymer and poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) to synthesize bicontinuous macroporous morphologies with microdomains from 0.5 to 6 mu m. The polymeric materials were further carbonized at elevated temperature to yield bimodal meso-/macroporous carbon monoliths after the thermal decomposition of the PEO-PPO-PEO template. The bimodal porous nature of the resultant carbon monoliths was derived from the dual phase separation in which spinodal decomposition and microphase separation occurred simultaneously. We demonstrated the tunability of macropores without alteration of mesopore sizes.

Abstract:CO2/Ca(OH)2 precipitation reaction was used to prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles in this work. As a fast reaction system, nice mixing and a fast mass transfer rate of CO2 are required to enhance supersaturation. To increase the mixing performance, a microstructure reactor, a membrane dispersion minireactor, which has microfiltration membranes as the dispersion media, was introduced and CaCO3 nanoparticles with average diameters ranging from 34.3 to 110 nm were prepared. Several operating conditions were investigated for the purpose of controlling the particle size. In addition, a deep analysis on the mass transfer flux density of CO2 was carried out and the particle size decreased with the increasing of the mass transfer flux density during the reaction. Compared with a membrane-free reactor, it was found that the mixing performance was significantly enhanced by the effect of the micropore membrane, and nanoparticles cannot be prepared without it.

Abstract:In this study, steady liquid-gas phase separation is realized by applying a hydrophobic small microchannel array (SMA) to bridge two large microchannels, one for liquid phase and one for gas phase. In this structure, a capillary pressure difference between that in the SMA and the larger channel results in a steady liquid-gas interface. The generated liquid-gas interface allows for fast gas dissolving speed. By coupling the liquid-gas interface with a one directional fluidic field, a steady dissolved gas concentration gradient (DgCG) is generated. The DgCG distribution is easily designable for linear or exponential modes, providing improved flexibility for gas participated processes on chip. To demonstrate its applicability, a CO2 DgCG chip is fabricated and applied for screening CaCO3 crystal growth conditions in the DgCG chip. Crystals with transitional structures are successfully fabricated, which is consistent with the CO2 DgCG distribution.

Abstract:The challenge of continuous CaCO3 particle synthesis is addressed using microfluidic technology. A custom microfluidic chip was used to synthesize CaCO3 nanoparticles in vaterite form. Our focus revolved around exploring one-phase and two-phase synthesis methods tailored for the crystallization of these nanoparticles. The combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, and small-angle scattering allowed for an evaluation of the synthesis efficiency, including the particle size distribution, morphology, and polymorph composition. The results demonstrated the superior performance of the two-phase system when precipitation occurred inside emulsion microreactors, providing improved size control compared with the one-phase approach. We also discussed insights into particle size changes during the transition from one-phase to two-phase synthesis. The ability to obtain CaCO3 nanoparticles in the desired polymorph form (∼50 nm in size, 86-99% vaterite phase) with the possibility of scaling up the synthesis will open up opportunities for various industrial applications of the developed two-phase microfluidic method.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a simple strategy for fabricating hollow CaCO3 microspheres. We employed poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in one system, as a template for the controlled growth of hollow CaCO3 microspheres. It suggests that the PEG–SDS complex micelles play a key role in controlling the growth of biominerals. The variation of polymer molecular weight drastically changed the morphology and polymorph of the obtained CaCO3. These results also present a facile route to biomimetic inorganic synthesis.

Abstract:Nanoparticles have been produced by a T-junction microchannel device in our previous work (Li et al., Langmuir. 2008;24:4194-4199). As a scaling-up strategy, pore array microstructured devices were designed to prepare nanoparticles in this article. H2SO4 and BaCl2, respectively, in two phases to form BaSO4 nanoparticles was used as a test system. The characteristics of a well controlled liquid-liquid two-phase flow in the pore array, microstructured devices were presented. Nanoparticles with small size and good dispersibility were produced through drop or disk flows in the microstructured devices. The influence of mass transfer and chemical reaction on interfacial tension and flow patterns was discussed based on the experiments. Meanwhile, the effect of the two phase flow patterns on the nanoparticle,size was discussed. It was found that the increase of the amount of mass transfer and chemical reaction could change the flow patterns from disk flow to drop flow. The droplet diameter could be changed in a wide range. Flow patterns could be distinguished based on the measured interfacial tension it? different concentrations. The prepared nanoparticles were ranged from 10 nm to 30 nm. Apparently the particle size was decreased with the increase of the droplet size in both the drop flow region and the disk flow region whereas it had a reverse trend in the transition region. Abstract:This study presents a novel process of in situ surface modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles using a multiple-orifice dispersion microreactor. CO2/Ca(OH)2 precipitation reaction was employed to prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles with sodium stearate surfactant. Synthesized CaCO3 products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infra-red (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer–Emmet–Teller analysis (BET). The effect of various operation parameters on nanoparticles and the dosage of sodium stearate were determined. The results showed that the preparation process could be precisely controlled with efficient mass transfer process. The particles were highly hydrophobic with a contact angle of 117° and monodisperse with an average size of 30nm. The adsorptions of sodium stearate and calcium ion on solid particles during the in situ surface modification process were investigated.

Abstract:This work describes a novel method for the preparation of monodispersed calcium alginate microbeads in a microfluidic device. A novel microfluidic device comprising of two cross-junction channels and a synthesizing channel was designed by controlling the mixing condition with laminar flow and two-phase droplet flow in microfluidic devices. At the first junction, the side two streams, sodium alginate aqueous solution and calcium chloride aqueous solution, were separated to prevent contact by the injection of deionized water in the middle channel. Then the aqueous mixture solution was induced into monodispersed droplets by a focusing sheath of immiscible oil phase at the second junction. The formed droplets were solidified in situ in the synthesizing channel with the rapid mixing of reactants in the droplets. The size of the Ca-alginate microbeads can be controlled from 50-300 mu m in diameter with a variation of less than 2 %, simply by changing the two-phase flow ratio. The proposed microfluidic platform is capable of generating uniform emulsions and has the advantages of in situ solidification and good control of particle size.

Abstract:In this work, we describe a novel and simple microfluidic method for fabricating nanoparticle-coated chitosan microspheres. Uniform droplets of aqueous chitosan solution were dispersed into an oil phase containing partially hydrophilic nanoparticles via a co-axial microfluidic device. Recirculating flow in the continuous phase in the area between drops enhanced mixing and allowed the nanoparticles to coat the surface of the droplets as they passed through the channel. The chitosan droplets were then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and nanoparticle-coated microspheres were obtained. SEM characterization shows that the microspheres are monodispersed with uniform nanoparticle distribution on the surface. The dispersity, size and composition of the microspheres could all easily be controlled by changing the microfluidic flow parameters and three different types of nanoparticles were successfully used to synthesize hybrid microspheres to demonstrate the method's versatility.

Abstract:Calcium alginate microspheres (CAMs) have attracted extensive attention as a novel drug carrier due to their cheapness, biodegradability, biocompatibility and nontoxicity. The existing preparation technologies of CAMs require complex process steps and involve multiple types of equipment, which are difficult to achieve the real-time and on-demand supply of microspheres in micro-reaction experiments. In this work, CAMs for prolonged drug release are prepared by the designed piezoelectric microfluidic devices using sodium alginate (NaAlg) and calcium chloride (CaCl2). Specifically, the on-demand CAMs are synthesized timely by piezoelectric micro-jet followed by the transportation of piezoelectric micro-pump. Furthermore, various solution concentrations, main parameters of excitation signal and different nozzle diameters are evaluated in terms of size, morphology and drug release rate. The control method of CAMs' size is obtained based on the multi-physics coupling analysis. Experimental results show that the doxorubicin hydrochloride loaded CAMs (DOX-CAMs) which can be prepared on demand, have excellent uniformity and dispersion, and the minimum average particle size is about 81.9 mu m. The controlled drug release rate of DOX-CAMs reaches 83.2 % after 24 h. Moreover, the piezoelectric micro -fluidic devices and corresponding control methods may have potentials to be adapted for synthesizing other inorganic composite microspheres.

Abstract:This article presents a simple and novel approach to prepare monodispersed gas-in-oil-in-water (G/O/W) and gas-in-water-in-oil (G/W/O) double-emulsions in the same dual-coaxial microfluidic device. The effects of three phase flow rates on the sizes of microbubbles and droplets and the number of the encapsulated microbubbles were systematically studied. We successfully synthesized two different types of gas/liquid/liquid (G/L/L) double emulsions with different inner structures in the same geometry by adjusting the flow rates sequentially. Mathematical models were developed to predict the size and structures of the double emulsions. This simple approach gives a new idea for preparing hollow and porous microspheres with microbubbles as the direct core/pores templates.

Abstract:Nano-sized calcium carbonate, as a multifunctional material, is widely used in various industrial fields. The morphology, particle size, surface property of CaCO3 particles have great impact on the application effect. This study presents an energy-saving and efficient approach to controllably prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles and conduct surface modification simultaneously. Ca(OH)(2)/CO2 carbonation method was adopted to prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles using a membrane dispersion microreactor in the presence of calcium stearate (CaSt(2)) surfactant. The effects of gas and liquid flow rates, temperature and the dosage of surfactant were systematically investigated. The effect of surface modification was evaluated by contact angle and active ratio. The as-prepared hydrophobic CaCO3 nanoparticles were of good dispersity, with an average particle size of 34 nm, a specific surface area of above 30 m(2)/g and a contact angle of 107.8 degrees. In this work, the effect of surfactant on the carbonation reaction was greatly diminished by adding CaSt(2) surfactant to a portion of Ca(OH)(2) slurry. Additionally, the modification process was carried out without organic solvents and high temperature. As compared to post-modification method, the in-situ modification process is of significant practical importance because of high production efficiency, excellent process stability, and high product quality. Abstract:Tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate (TPGDA) was found to be an excellent monomer for the stabilization and dispersion of inorganic nanoparticles. Uniform nano-Au/poly(TPGDA) and nano-ZnO/poly(TPGDA) composite microbeads were synthesized in situ using a designed axisymmetric capillary-based flow-focusing microfluidic device without any additional surfactant or coupling agent. Using the designed mixing-enhanced microfluidic device, homogeneous nano-inorganic/polymer composites with a high content of nanoparticles were obtained. Morphologies of the composites were characterized by SEM, TEM, surface microscopy, dark-field microscopy and internal fluorescence.

Abstract:Microparticles with uniform anisotropic structures are widely used in physical, chemical, and biological fields owing to their ability to combine multiple functions on a micro-scale. Here, a microfluidic emulsion-based external gelation method was demonstrated for the first time to produce monodisperse Janus calcium alginate (Ca-alginate) hydrogel microparticles consisting of two compartments. This approach provided a fast reaction condition under which we could prepare magnetic Janus Ca-alginate microparticles with diameters ranging from 148 to 179 μm and a coefficient of variation (CV) less than 4%. Moreover, the boundaries between the two compartments were clear. In addition, the volume fraction of each compartment could be adjusted by varying the flow rate ratio between two dispersed phases. Next, we produced fluorescent Janus beads and magnetic-fluorescent Janus beads with an average diameter of ∼150 μm (CV < 4.0%). The magnetic Janus hydrogel microparticles we produced could be manipulated by applying a magnetic field to achieve self-assembly, rotation, and accumulation. Magnetic Janus hydrogel microparticles are also capable of mammalian cell encapsulation with good cell viability. This article presents a simple and stable approach for producing monodisperse bi-compartmental Janus hydrogel microparticles that could have great potential for application in physical, biochemical, and biomedical fields.

Abstract:It is a long-standing dream to fabricate micron-sized inorganic spheres that have nanocompartments enclosed by a permeable shell and thus resemble the shape of natural cells. Here, we demonstrate a novel synthesis protocol to attain this goal for the first time. This protocol unprecedentedly harnesses interfacial sol–gel growth around Pickering droplets coupled with a surfactant assembly-directed sol–gel process within droplet-confined spaces. This protocol enables us to fabricate novel mesoporous silica microspheres (MSMs) with tunable interior architectures, such as hollow MSMs, hollow nanosphere-containing MSMs (hn@MSMs), nanosphere-containing MSMs (n@MSMs), yolk-shell-structured MSMs (y@MSMs) and “solid” MSMs. The obtained multi-compartmentalized MSMs exhibit good permeability to external molecules and good mechanical strength against stress. Moreover, their structural features benefit practical applications of CO2 capture and enzymatic reactions. Due to the high dispersion of tetraethylenepentamine and enzyme in the spatially separated nanocompartments, the developed CO2 sorbents and catalysts exhibit significantly enhanced CO2 capture efficiency and catalysis efficiency. Abstract:Alginate as a good drug delivery vehicle has excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In the ionic gelation process between alginate and Ca2+, the violent reaction is the absence of a well-controlled strategy in the synthesizing calcium alginate (CaA) microgels. In this study, a concentration-controlled microfluidic chip with central buffer flow was designed and 3D-printed to well-control the synthesis process of CaA microgels by the diffusion mixing pattern. The diffusion mixing pattern in the microfluidic chip can slow down the ionic gelation process in the central stream. The particle size can be influenced by channel length and flow rate ratio, which can be regulated to 448 nm in length and 235 nm in diameter. The delivery ratio of Doxorubicin (Dox) in CaA microgels are up to 90% based on the central stream strategy. CaA@Dox microgels with pH-dependent release property significantly enhances the cell killing rate against human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). The diffusion mixing pattern gives rise to well-controlled synthesis of CaA microgels, serving as a continuous and controllable production process for advanced drug delivery systems.
