Abstract:Formaldehyde, which is recognized as a harmful indoor air pollutant for human health, is emitted mainly from urea formaldehyde resin in wood products. Chamber tests are used to evaluate formaldehyde emission rates from these products. However, there is no available formaldehyde standard reference emission source to assess the performance of chamber testing systems. In this work, a LIFE (liquid-inner tube diffusion-film-emission) formaldehyde reference is described. The formaldehyde source consists of a polytetra-fluoroethene (PTFE) tube that holds a formaldehyde-water solution with a concentration of 16 g formaldehyde per 100 mL water, with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film cover. Formaldehyde emission parameters for the PDMS film (diffusion coefficient and partition coefficient) were determined experimentally, thereby enabling the prediction of the formaldehyde emissions from the source for use as a reference value in a chamber. Chamber tests were conducted in a 51 L stainless steel ventilated chamber. The impacts of temperature and relative humidity on the emissions were investigated Results show the LIFE's chamber test results match those predicted by a mass transfer model. As a result, this formaldehyde source may be used to generate a reference concentration in product emission testing chambers, thereby providing a powerful tool to evaluate the performance of the chamber testing systems.

Abstract:A formaldehyde liquid-inner tube diffusion-film-emission (LIFE) source was developed to evaluate the performance of chamber systems for furniture/building material formaldehyde emission tests consisting of a formaldehyde-water solution tube and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. The measurements of the formaldehyde LIFE source’s emission rate and the PDMS film’s key emission parameters (diffusion coefficient and partition coefficient) were made under various temperatures (10 ?, 23 ? and 30 ?). In this paper, the relation between the PDMS film’s emission parameters and temperature were investigated, and correlations between these parameters and temperature were established. The equivalent emission parameters (diffusion coefficient, partition coefficient, and initial emittable formaldehyde concentration) of the LIFE reference, fitting the LIFE reference as a one dimensional emitting building material, were determined by the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. Experimental correlations between the equivalent emission parameters of LIFE and temperature were also studied by fitting the data of the equivalent emission parameters of LIFE to the correlations for building materials, which were also well matched. The results show that the formaldehyde LIFE source can be used to evaluate the performance of a chamber system for determining formaldehyde emission rates from furniture/building materials and also evaluate key material parameters affecting emissions.
A standard reference for chamber testing of material VOC emissions: Design principle and performance

Abstract:Environmental chambers are widely used to test formaldehyde and other volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from indoor materials and furniture. However, there is a lack of a proven method to assess the precision of the test results of the chamber system. In this paper, we describe a new standard reference, LIFE (liquid-inner tube diffusion-film-emission), to address this problem. This reference has the following salient features: (1) Constant emission rate, with less than 3.0% change with an ambient airflow speed (>0.014 m/s) at furniture emission range (0.1–1.0 mg/m3 in a 30 m3 chamber with air change rate of 1/h) under standard chamber test conditions as specified by ISO 16000-9 (23 °C, 50% RH); (2) Long duration of emissions, on the order of 1000 h; (3) Easy to store, apply and maintain. The design principle and criteria of the LIFE reference are presented. An analytical model and dimensionless analysis were applied to optimize the factors influencing the emission rate, and experiments were conducted to validate the analytical results. In addition, the equivalent emission parameters of the reference, i.e., the initial emittable concentration, the diffusion coefficient and the partition coefficient, were determined through a three-parameter optimizing regression. This can then be used to check the reliability of a chamber method for testing these three parameters. The developed standard reference should prove useful for calibrating chamber systems for indoor material/furniture VOC emissions tests.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Prediction of Formaldehyde Emission and Sorption Processes in a Small Test Chamber with Mixing Fan and Vents

Abstract:Characterizing the emission performance of formaldehyde is critical for control strategies. Most previous emission models assume that formaldehyde concentrations are well-mixed. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics-based model is developed for simulating the mass transfer and adsorption/desorption processes of formaldehyde from particleboards in a chamber with a mixing fan. Numerical investigations on the impacts of the mixing fan, adsorption/desorption rate constants, and key transport parameters influencing the emission behaviors are conducted for the first time. The results show that the complete mixing assumption is not appropriate in the early emission period. Incomplete mixing becomes more significant with a decreasing rotation speed, leading to a time-dependent equivalent mass transfer coefficient. The deviation in the maximum concentration between the simulated curves with and without the adsorption/desorption effect is approximately 8.5%. A coefficient of mixing of 0.0283 is suitable for evaluating complete mixing in the chamber. With an increase in the rotation speed, the degree of mixing improves, and the mass transfer coefficient increases sublinearly. Secondary reemission becomes more significant and begins earlier for materials with lower partition coefficients and higher diffusivity.

Abstract:Environmental chamber systems are usually employed in the testing of volatile organic compound (VOC) and formaldehyde emissions from building materials. The measurement accuracy of environmental chamber systems can be evaluated by VOC/formaldehyde emission references. However, the available VOC/formaldehyde emission references all have some limitations for applications to various scales of chambers. A framework for designing and using a target VOC/formaldehyde emission references to evaluate the performance of chamber systems for measuring VOC/formaldehyde emissions from building materials is studied. Liquid-inner tube diffusion-film-emission (LIFE) reference is improved in this study to meet the requirements of a target VOC/formaldehyde emission reference, such as reliability, similarity as building materials, efficiency for measurement. Equivalent emission characteristic parameters are designed for a toluene LIFE reference to perform similar to a building material. Chamber test of the LIFE reference is made in a 30 m(3) stainless steel ventilated environmental chamber at 23 +/- 1 degrees C and 50 +/- 5% relative humidity. The experimental data match the predictions using LIFE emission model as well as building material emission model. The improvement of the LIFE reference enables its application for the evaluation of the performance of all kinds of environmental chambers as a general reference in tests of VOCs/formaldehyde emissions from building materials. Design and Evaluation of Full-scale Chamber for Determining Chemical Contaminant Emissions from Indoor Materials/Products

Abstract:In this paper,the testing principles of indoor materials/products in full-scale chamber were introduced,and a construction scheme of full-scale chamber which had high control precision and low construction cost was proposed.This full-scale chamber consisted of three parts:chamber system,air purification system and temperature and humidity control system.Furthermore,the experiments were carried out to evaluate the chamber performances.The results indicated that air leakage of the chamber was 0.019 times /h,mixing level was 87%,temperature and relative humidity control precisions were ± 0.5 ℃ and ± 5% respectively,and the background concentration was less than 10% of the standard value.According to the current standard guidelines,this chamber could be used to carry out VOC emissions tests.Finally,this chamber was applied to test VOC emissions from a piece of wooden furniture,and the emission rules were studied.
USING AN AIRTIGHT CHAMBER TO MEASURE THE PARTITION COEFFICIENT OF FORMALDEHYDE ON TYPICAL ADSORBENTS

Abstract:Doping high performance adsorbents into synthetic building materials is a novel method to reduce source formaldehyde emission. Due to the lack of the adsorption data for formaldehyde in the literatures, this paper deals with a simple airtight chamber method to test the partition coefficient K of formaldehyde on typical adsorbents and choose the better one. Compared with the similar methods, a blank chamber experiment is added to determine the injection quantity of formaldehyde in this method. During experiments, the chamber system was well controlled under common indoor environmental conditions (i.e., temperature: 25 +/- 1 degrees C, humidity: 50 +/- 10%). K values of two typical adsorbents such as activated carbon fibre (ACF) and potassium permanganate impregnated alumina (PIA) were measured in a concerned range of equilibrium concentrations (i.e., <5 mg/m(3)). It was found that the adsorptions of both adsorbents satisfied Henry's Law; PIA had much better adsorption performance than ACF, which meant the former could be used as a potential adsorbent to reduce formaldehyde emission from building materials.

Abstract:The volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of building materials are represented by three parameters: the initial emittable concentration (C0), diffusion coefficient (D), and partition coefficient (K). Accurate measurement of these three parameters is key to the reasonable prediction and control of VOC emissions from building materials. In this study, a single airtight emission (SAE) method for determining the three emission parameters of building materials is proposed. Based on the dynamic analysis of the normalized relative sensitivity coefficient of the characteristic parameters in an airtight environment, the three parameters could be determined by piece-wise fitting of the experimental data. This method requires only a single airtight emission experiment for building materials, and the experimental time is short (<= 36 h). C0, D, and K can be simply calculated by nonlinearly fitting of the experimental data. It demonstrated some significant improvements towards better simplicity and accuracy compared to previous methods. The emission parameters of formaldehyde in the four types of building materials were determined following the SAE method, and the predicted values agreed well with the experimental values under various environmental conditions. Additionally, the possible sources of errors using this method were analyzed, and the influence of the initial hypothesis on the results was also discussed to further verify the feasibility and accuracy of the method. The SAE method proposed in this study can efficiently and accurately measure the formaldehyde emission parameters of building materials, and is suitable for application in engineering, requiring a short time and simple operation.

Abstract:The formaldehyde (CH/sub 2/O) emission rates of combustion sources and solid CH/sub 2/O resin-containing products commonly found in domestic environments are surveyed. The potential contribution of these sources to indoor CH/sub 2/O concentrations are estimated using simple steady-state, indoor pollutant concentration models. The strongest contributors to indoor CH/sub 2/O are pressed-wood products and foam insulation containing urea formaldehyde resins. Combustion sources and phenon-formaldehyde resin-bonded products are generally weak emitters. Potential corrective measures to reduce indoor CH/sub 2/O concentrations are reviewed. Ammonia fumigation, permeation barriers on non-decorative surfaces, and increased ventilation may be useful techniques to reduce the contribution of strong solid emission sources until the CH/sub 2/O emissions are reduced to more acceptable levels through normal product aging. 38 references, 1 figure, 11 tables.

An Investigation on Formaldehyde Emission Characteristics of Wood Building Materials in Chinese Standard Tests: Product Emission Levels, Measurement Uncertainties, and Data Correlations between Various Tests

Abstract:As a large producer and consumer of wood building materials, China suffers product formaldehyde emissions (PFE) but lacks systematic investigations and basic data on Chinese standard emission tests (CST), so this paper presented a first effort on this issue. The PFE of fiberboards, particleboards, blockboards, floorings, and parquets manufactured in Beijing region were characterized by the perforator extraction method (PE), 9-11 L and 40 L desiccator methods (D9, D40), and environmental chamber method (EC) of the Chinese national standard GB 18580; based on statistics of PFE data, measurement uncertainties in CST were evaluated by the Monte Carlo method; moreover, PFE data correlations between tests were established. Results showed: (1) Different tests may give slightly different evaluations on product quality. In PE and D9 tests, blockboards and parquets reached E1 grade for PFE, which can be directly used in indoor environment; but in D40 and EC tests, floorings and parquets achieved E1. (2) In multiple tests, PFE data characterized by PE, D9, and D40 complied with Gaussian distributions, while those characterized by EC followed log-normal distributions. Uncertainties in CST were overall low, with uncertainties for 20 material-method combinations all below 7.5%, and the average uncertainty for each method under 3.5%, thus being acceptable in engineering application. A more complicated material structure and a larger test scale caused higher uncertainties. (3) Conventional linear models applied to correlating PFE values between PE, D9, and EC, with R2 all over 0.840, while novel logarithmic (exponential) models can work better for correlations involving D40, with R2 all beyond 0.901. This research preliminarily demonstrated the effectiveness of CST, where results for D40 presented greater similarities to EC-the currently most reliable test for PFE, thus highlighting the potential of Chinese D40 as a more practical approach in production control and risk assessment.

Abstract:The indoor pollution caused by formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from building materials poses an adverse effect on people's health. It is necessary to understand and control the behaviors of the emission sources. Based on detailed mass transfer analysis on the emission process in a ventilated chamber, this paper proposes a novel method of measuring the three emission characteristic parameters, i.e., the initial emittable concentration, the diffusion coefficient and the partition coefficient. A linear correlation between the logarithm of dimensionless concentration and time is derived. The three parameters can then be calculated from the intercept and slope of the correlation. Compared with the closed chamber C-history method, the test is performed under ventilated condition thus some commonly-used measurement instruments (e.g., GC/MS, HPLC) can be applied. While compared with other methods, the present method can rapidly and accurately measure the three parameters, with experimental time less than 12h and R(2) ranging from 0.96 to 0.99 for the cases studied. Independent experiment was carried out to validate the developed method, and good agreement was observed between the simulations based on the determined parameters and experiments. The present method should prove useful for quick characterization of formaldehyde/VOC emissions from indoor materials.
Characterisation of VOC and Formaldehyde Emission from Building Materials in a Static Environmental Chamber: Model Development and Application

Abstract:This paper first derives an analytical solution based on Laplace transformation for describing the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde emission characteristics from building materials in a static chamber; the modelling method is then validated by application using previously reported experimental data. Based on the analytical solution and normalised analysis, the VOC emission characteristics can be advantageously deduced by scaling in dimensionless forms. The findings of this study shows that the dimensionless emission rate is a function of three dimensionless parameters: the ratio of the mass transfer Biot number to the partition coefficient; the mass transfer Fourier number; and the ratio of the VOC mass in the building material to that measured in the chamber at equilibrium. A group of dimensionless correlations for predicting the dimensionless emission rate were obtained through numerical simulation and characteristic parameter regression, and this was verified by experimental data. The dimensionless correlations are simple to use, and would allow scaling of the emission characteristics obtained from the static chamber to the more realistic conditions of a building and this would be useful for design engineer to minimize emissions of VOCs and formaldehyde in building environments.
A Study on the Formaldehyde Emission Parameters of Porous Building Materials Based on Adsorption Potential Theory

Abstract:The emission of formaldehyde from building materials is characterized by three key parameters: the initial emittable concentration, the partition coefficient, and the diffusion coefficient. Scholars have conducted considerable research to determine these three parameters. However, the experimental methods are mostly time consuming, and the experimental data cannot provide a mechanism to explain the influence of the main control factors on the emission parameters. Theoretical prediction models have been built to predict a certain parameter based on different theories and with different applicable scopes. Thus, it is necessary to establish a theoretical system that can analyze the formaldehyde emission process based on a fundamental theory and can simultaneously predict the emission parameters. Based on adsorption potential theory, this paper disassembled the pore structure of porous building materials and calculated the adsorption potential for a given pore diameter. According to the relationship between the molecular kinetic energy and the adsorption potential, the emittable ratios for each independent potential field were calculated. The initial emittable concentration of the whole material was finally obtained by reconstruction. Our previous study proposed a prediction model for the partition coefficient based on adsorption potential theory. Combining this proposed model with the effective diffusivity model, a new correlation between the diffusion coefficient and temperature was derived. Three types of medium density fiberboards and one type of particle board were used in the mercury intrusion porosimetry tests and the environmental chamber experiments of formaldehyde emission. The emission parameters calculated by the prediction models agreed well with the experimental data.
Computational fluid dynamics analysis of a micro-scale chamber for measuring organic chemical emission parameters

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to model the velocity field and the transport of a passive scalar within a micro-scale chamber used to measure diffusional transport through various building materials. Comparisons of solutions obtained using a steady, laminar flow assumption with velocity measurements obtained from hot-wire anemometry show that the numerical method generally underpredicts the near surface velocity field. The results improve for higher flow rates and for carpeted test materials, modeled as a porous resistive layer. Calculations involving scalar transport within the upper chamber of the sampling device are performed for different flow rates and Schmidt numbers. The results are used to develop a model for the convective mass transfer coefficient, correlated as a function of the Reynolds and Schmidt numbers as well as the porosity of the carpet. This model is integrated into a steady-state mass transport model for predicting the diffusion of gaseous formaldehyde through various test materials. Predictions of diffusion and partition coefficients for vinyl flooring, gypsum wall board, and carpet are within the ranges of literature data. The results indicate that a perfectly mixed upper part of the sampling device is an adequate assumption.

Adsorption of Formaldehyde on the Surface of Environmental Test Chamber

Abstract:The tracking experiments in an environmental test chamber for 25 d were carried out, including the stages of intrinsic formaldehyde concentration test, formaldehyde release, formaldehyde concentration attenuation, ventilation and formaldehyde release after it was adsorbed on the chamber surface. So it is necessary to investigate its releasing rules in order to improve the subsequent testing and propose guidance on the control of indoor pollution. The research results show that the formaldehyde concentration (C) in the chamber changes consistent with a logarithmic function: C=Alnt+B [when formaldehyde in the chamber releases, A≥0, B≥0, when formaldehyde attenuates, A<0, B≥0, t is time (h)], where A is closely related to the relative equilibrium concentration established again after the adsorbed formaldehyde releases. Using suction type ventilation system for the chamber is in favor of residual formaldehyde reduction. After closing the ventilation system, the initial concentration of formaldehyde in the chamber increases quickly, and then a relatively low concentration of formaldehyde (0.3203 mg/m3) will be established again in balance. Adsorption degree of formaldehyde in the chamber is related to the substrate surface adsorption ratio θ and hitting quantity of the adsorbate on the substrate surface U.
A variable volume loading method to determine the initial emittable concentration of VOC and formaldehyde in building materials

Abstract:The initial emittable VOC and formaldehyde concentration in building materials is a key parameter for characterizing and classifying these materials. This paper proposes a novel variable volume loading (VVL) method to determine this parameter. For the method, variable volumes of the material are put in an airtight chamber separately and perform emission process until equilibrium for each volume, and repeated experiments are performed to reduce measurement error. The presented method has the following features: (a) test the samples under practical conditions; (b) convenient for routine measurements; and (c) require short experimental time. The initial emittable concentrations of formaldehyde, propanal and hexanal in one kind of medium density fiberboard have been measured. In addition, it is found that the ratios of the measured formaldehyde concentration obtained via this method are less than 10% from that using the perforator method, as recommended in the Chinese National Standard.

Abstract:Formaldehyde emissions of building materials are greatly influenced by the indoor air temperature. An accurate evaluation of the influence of formaldehyde emissions on indoor air quality requires an investigation of the emission characteristic parameters at different temperatures. Based on the adsorption potential theory, this paper derived the correlation between the initial emittable concentration (C-0) and the partition coefficient (K) of formaldehyde emissions from building materials. On account of the characteristics of a high equilibrium concentration of formaldehyde emissions under high temperatures in an airtight environment, a step temperature rising emission (STRE) method to simultaneously determine the characteristic parameters of formaldehyde emissions at multiple temperatures was proposed. This innovative method was validated by theoretical models in the literature and via independent experiments. In addition, an optimization method for determining the appropriate volumetric air/material phase ratio was discussed and analyzed to improve the accuracy and reliability of the STRE method. This method aims to improve the measurement efficiency of the emission characteristic parameters and provides inspiration for evaluating the hazard posed by formaldehyde emissions from furniture and building materials.

Abstract:The initial mobile formaldehyde concentration, C-m,C-0; the partition coefficient, K; and the diffusion coefficient, D, of a dry building material are key parameters to characterize formaldehyde emissions from the building material. The solvent extraction method and direct thermal desorption method can overestimate C-m,C-0 because of high temperature. A new method has been developed to determine C-m,C-0 under similar conditions to common indoor environment, together with K and D. In the proposed method, the tested materials are placed in an airtight environmental chamber for which the temperature can be controlled by a water bath, then the materials undergo a multisorption/emission process and the instantaneous formaldehyde concentration in the chamber is recorded. The K and C-m,C-0 are determined from the equilibrium concentrations after every sorption by means of the linear least-square regression, and D is obtained by fitting the concentration at the emission stage into a mass-transfer-based model in the literature. Four kinds of wooden medium-density boards are tested. The C-m,C-0 measured using this method is the mobile formaldehyde concentration in the material, which differs significantly from the total formaldehyde concentration in the material measured by using the traditional method recommended by the Chinese standard (GB/T 176S7-1999) extraction method. This means that the mobile formaldehyde takes only a small portion of the total quantity in the tested material. The K, D, and C-m,C-0 values measured using this new method are used to predict formaldehyde concentrations for sorption processes. The results agree well with experimental data. In addition, some factors influencing the accuracy are analyzed.
Early-Stage Emissions of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compounds from Building Materials: Model Development, Evaluation, and Applications.

Abstract:Emissions of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building materials may result in poor indoor air quality. The emission process can be divided into three stages over time: early, transition, and equilibrium stages. In existing studies, mass transfer models without distinguishing the early and transition stages have been widely used for characterizing the formaldehyde/VOC emissions, with three key parameters involved in these models. Many methods have been proposed for determining these parameters by fitting the corresponding models to experimental data. However, multiple groups of best-fit parameters might coexist if experimental data are obtained at the early stage (to shorten the experimental time). Therefore, we developed a novel mass transfer model to describe the early-stage emissions by assuming the building material as semi-infinite medium. The novel model indicated that the early-stage emission was governed by only two parameters, instead of three parameters, which explained the reason for the multi-solution problem of existing methods. Subsequently, the application condition of the early-stage model was clarified, showing that the early stage was very common in the emissions of formaldehyde/VOCs. Finally, a novel approach for characterizing the emissions of formaldehyde/VOCs from building materials was proposed to eliminate the negative effects of the multi-solution problem.
Estimates of Parameters for Formaldehyde Emission Model from Plywood Panel under Various Temperature and Relative Humidity Conditions

Abstract:The initial emittable concentration, C-m,C-0, the material phase diffusion coefficient, D-m, and the air/material partition coefficient, K, are the key parameters used to predict the formaldehyde emissions from indoor building materials. This work presents formaldehyde emission experiments of plywood panels in a climatic chamber under various environmental conditions, which provides information on how relative humidity, temperature, and loading degree affect the formaldehyde emission. The experimental results showed that formaldehyde concentration in the climatic chamber increased rapidly during the initial 3 h, and then reached equilibrium after 7 h. The equilibrium concentration of formaldehyde in the closed chamber was increased by 1.1-1.3 times with the relative humidity increased by 20%, and 1.3-2.5 times with the temperature increased by 5 degrees C, respectively. In agreement with the experimental treatment, a new method of estimating parameters was carried out in a theoretical model from formaldehyde emission, opening the way to a factorial analysis of the relevant parameters for relative humidity and temperature. The theoretical model with estimated parameters was further validated by experiments with different environmental conditions, which should help to quickly determine the parameters needed to predict formaldehyde emissions.
