Abstract:We propose a reflective chromatic polarizer based on one dimensional metal–dielectric–metal grating structure, which can present a great feature of efficient color filtering for TE polarization and blocking feature for TM polarization at 45° incidence. Three primary chromatic polarizers (cyan, magenta, yellow) with excellent performance are obtained. The effect of the geometrical parameters on the polarizing property and chromatic character is fully analyzed. A convenient and fast approach is provided to achieve color tuning for chromatic polarizers by simply varying the thickness of the intermediate dielectric layer. Moreover, the chromatic polarizer can keep the optical property up to 10° of the azimuth angle. The Fabry–Pérot resonance and the similar effect of the wire grid polarizer account for the spectral filtering feature and the polarizing feature of the chromatic polarizer.

Abstract:Based on the 2D-PC wave multilayer film structure, a method to broaden the bandwidth of polarization beam splitter is proposed, which is composed of two different thickness periodic film stacks. Combined with the evaluation function of polarization splitting characteristic, the particle swarm optimization method is employed to design the optimal structural parameters. A broadband and compact polarization beam splitter is acquired, in which the center wavelength is 565 nm and its working range has achieved 220 nm with the average extinction ratio over 30 dB. In addition, by using the finite difference time domain method, the band structure and transmission spectrum of the wave-structure multilayer film are calculated, the angle sensitivity of the structure is investigated in detail. And we also study the electromagnetic field in the wavy-structure. Simulation results prove that the structure composed of the two different thickness periodic film stacks can avoid the discontinuity of bandgap, and PSO method can accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and extend the bandwidth effectively.

Abstract:Based on the mechanism of automatic shaping, the corrugated multilayer films of two_dimensional (2D) phtonic crystal is designed.This structure realizes omnidirectional polarization splitting with TM mode passing window between λ＝148 and 152μm, which is the complete band gap of TE mode. The variable rang es of the slope angle of the layers and the width of a-Si single layer are 38° —49° and 014—015μm, respectively. Band structure has been used to expl ain the omnidirectional polarization effect. An arrow-end_like 2D photonic cryst al which is the deformation of the corrugated multilayer films is introduced for comparison. It can only work as a wide-angle polarization splitter not as an o mnidirectional one for wavelength from 128 to 131μm. The comparison of th e band structures of these two different 2D photonic crystals leads to the metho d of extending the incident angle of polarization splitter.

Abstract:An ultra-compact TE-pass polarizer with an ultra-broad band is proposed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally by utilizing a silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The metal layer of the silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide is designed to have an F-P cavity as well as a Bragg grating so that the TM-polarized light is reflected efficiently while the TE-polarized light goes through with very low loss. By utilizing the present structure with a metal Bragg grating, the designed TE-pass polarizer is with a size of as small as 0.5 × 3.1 μμm2 and the theoretical extinction ratio is as high as 15 dB over a broad band of >200 nm.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:We propose a novel broadband polarizing beam splitter with a compact sandwich structure that has a subwavelength grating in the quasi-static domain as the filling. The design is based on effective-medium theory an anisotropic thin-film theory, and the performance is investigated with rigorous coupled-wave theory. The design results show that the structure can provide a high polarization extinction ratio in a broad spectral range.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband TM-pass waveguide polarizer based on thin-film LiNbO 3 -on-insulator waveguide and subwavelength grating (SWG) metamaterials is proposed and modeled. The device consists of an SWG in the central part and two coupling regions in the input and output sides. The SWG, formed by a series of bending nano-stripes, functions as a filter of polarization, and the two coupling regions serve to degrade mode mismatch loss. By tailoring the duty cycle of the SWG metamaterial, the SWG structure supports only the TM guided mode, while the TE guided mode is cutoff and thus filtered out. Simulation shows that, with a SWG meta-material formed by a series of 90°-bending nano-stripes, the polarizer can achieve an ultra-large bandwidth of ∼415 nm (1.26–1.675 μm) with an insertion loss 29.4 dB. Moreover, the proposed polarizer tolerates a 5 nm deviation in both width and thickness of the nano-stripes. Such an ultra-broadband device may find its use in high-capacity optical communication systems, and is proposed firstly on the basis of the lithium-niobate-on-insulator platform, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength polarizers have many essential applications in optics, quantum communication, Q switch and relating research fields. However, polarizing waveband of the traditional polarizer is restricted in the structure of fibers, which results in finite polarizing wavelengths. In this work, a novel D-shaped microstructure fiber polarizer (DMFP) with metal grating was proposed. Utilizing the abundant harmonic vector characteristics on the surface of metal grating, the DMFP can realize the function of multi-band polarization filtering. Numerical results show that it can achieve three bands of polarization filtering in x-polarized mode from 350 nm to 1600 nm and the resonance wavelengths are periodically modulated by grating. In the meanwhile, by optimizing grating parameters, the number of bands of polarization filtering can be further increased, thus, it fulfills the effective adjustment of polarization filtering. It is promising that metal grating based DMFP has great potential values in the fields of optical filter, communication, and functional devices, etc.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive multimode antisymmetric waveguide Bragg grating (MASWBG) filter based on an SiN–Si dual-layer stack is demonstrated. Carefully optimized grating corrugations patterned on the sidewall of a silicon waveguide and SiN overlay are used to perturbate TE and TM modes, respectively. Furthermore, the lateral-shift apodization technique is utilized to improve the sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). A good overlap between the passbands measured in TE and TM polarization states is obtained. Insertion losses, SLSRs, and 3-dB bandwidths of measured passbands in TE/TM polarizations are 1/1.72 dB, 18.5/19.1 dB, and 5.1/3.5 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A compact bidirectional polarization splitter based on two cascaded sub-gratings in a metallic-dielectric-air (MDA) waveguide is proposed and theoretically analyzed. The normally incident beam coupled to the MDA waveguide is split into left-going TE- and right-going TM-polarized modes by the structure. The operation principle is clarified and a coupled-mode model is developed for facilitating design. The polarization extinction ratio better than 33 dB and crosstalk less than -41 dB for TE-polarized mode and the corresponding 36 and -28 dB for TM-polarized mode are achieved at the operating wavelength 850 nm.

Abstract:An infrared polarizer consisting of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) gratings is designed with transmittance exceeding 85% and polarization extinction ratio (ER) higher than 70 dB in the wavelength range from 1.5 to 8 μm. Moreover, the polarizer retains excellent performance even when the incident angle increases to as large as 80°. The MIM gratings support magnetic polariton (MP) in the near-infrared regime and operate non-resonantly in the mid-infrared regime, both of which result in the advantages of high extinction ratio, broadband, and wide angle. The proposed structure can find applications in polarizer, beam-splitter, filter, and isolator in the infrared range.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and low-loss transverse-electric (TE)-pass polarizer is proposed by utilizing a hybrid plasmonic ridge waveguide structure on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Since the transmission of a plasmonic polarizer is greatly influenced by the interaction between the metal and the optical field, there is a large insertion loss (IL) in the polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Here, the electric field distribution and the periodic coupling between the fundamental transverse magnetic mode and plasmonic mode are taken into consideration to decrease the IL and shorten the length of the device. For a 4.2 mu m-long polarizer, numerical simulations with the finite-differential-time-domain method show that it has a large extinction ratio (ER) of similar to 29.5 dB with a low IL of 0.18 dB at the central wavelength 1550 nm. In addition, a more than 23 dB ER is achieved across a wide bandwidth of 100 nm. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An ultracompact and broadband TE-pass polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is proposed on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The optimized design has an active region as small as 0.8 μm, which is the shortest polarizer reported until now, and exhibits high polarization-dependent transmission imposing a TM mode cutoff while leaving the TE mode almost unaffected. Finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals an insertion loss <;1 dB and an extinction ratio of 19 dB. The extinction ratio could be further improved to 25 dB over 300-nm bandwidth, with an insertion loss of 2.5 dB.

Abstract:An ultra-small and broadband polarization splitter is numerically and experimentally demonstrated based on the double-slit interference in a polymer-film-coated double-slit structure. The hybrid slab waveguide (air-polymer-Au) supports both the transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes. The incident beam from the back side can excite these two guided modes of orthogonally polarized states in the hybrid structure. By exploiting the difference slit widths and the large mode birefringence, these two guided modes propagate to the opposite directions along the front metal surface. Moreover, the short interference length broadens the operation bandwidth. Experimentally, a polarization splitter with a lateral dimension of only about 1.6 μm and an operation bandwidth of 50 nm is realized. By designing the double-slit structure in a hybrid strip waveguide, the device dimension can be significant downscaled to about 0.3 × 1.3 μm2. Such an ultra-small and broadband polarization splitter may find important applications in the integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:A new bidirectional polarization splitting coupler based on a metal thin film perforated with periodic slits and coated with dielectric is proposed and theoretically investigated. The back-side incident light coupled to the metal-dielectric-air waveguide is split and launched into TM plasmonic and TE photonic modes simultaneously. The operation principle is clarified and theoretically illustrated using the fully vectorial aperiodic Fourier modal method. Polarization extinction ratios better than 15 dB and crosstalk less than 15 dB are achieved for both polarizations over C-band ranging from 1530 to 1570 nm.

Abstract:We report on a broadband polarization splitting phenomenon in an aluminum grating with its period much smaller than the wavelength of incident light. Under oblique incidence, grating is highly transparent for one polarization, but it is opaque and reflects the orthogonal polarization. By using the Fourier modal method and planar waveguide theory, we show that, comparing with the traditional metallic wire grid polarizers, the improved confinement of TM0 mode within the sub-50 nm wide grating slits is responsible for this polarization splitting effect.

Abstract:Based on different photonic band structures of TE and TM polarization modes in periodic multilayers, a method to realize the waveguide polarizer is proposed. The waveguide structure contains a SiO2 core layer sandwiched between two multilayers of alternately stacked poly-Si and SiO2, and the whole structure can be grown on a Si substrate. Its propagation characteristics are studied theoretically. High extinction ratio over 40 dB at a light wavelength of 1.3 μm is expected in the waveguide of only 40 μm long, accompanied with very low propagation loss of the passive TE mode. These characteristics are very suitable for the applications in integrated optics. The fabrication of this polarizer structure by using the magnetron sputtering method is demonstrated.

Abstract:Polarization is the most fundamental property of electromagnetic waves and the key to control its propagation, while conventional methods can only achieve polarization conversion in narrowband and lack of optical transparency. In this paper, we design an ultra-broadband transparent polarization converter consisting of a surface-etched indium tin oxide (ITO)-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resonator, a laser-cut polymethyl methacrylate layer, and an ITO-PET substrate bonded together. The structure simulation can achieve the co-polarization reflection coefficient less than -10 dB in 13.1-32.3 GHz. Then, we analyze the conversion mechanism from electric field, magnetic field, and surface current distribution. Moreover, the actual test performance achieves polarization conversion over 90% at 11.5-25.2 GHz with wide-angle incidence performance and visible light transmittance up to 53%. The excellent performance of this structure provides a new idea for the future design of ultra-broadband transparent polarization converters and expands the application of polarization converters in optical fields such as RF.
