Abstract:The investigation of few mode optical fibers for fiber-to-the-home application is presented. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed fiber can support single-mode and low bending loss operation by connecting the fiber with single-mode optical fibers.

Abstract:Bending losses of nanofibers or nanowires with circular 90 degrees bends are simulated using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. Dependences of bending losses on wavelength and polarization of guided light are investigated, as well as the diameters, refractive indices, and bending radii of nanowires. The acceptable bending losses (approximately 1 dB/90 degrees) predicted in glass, polymer, and semiconductor nanowires with bending radii down to micrometer level may offer valuable references for assembling highly compact photonic integrated circuits or devices with optical nanowires.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber system composed of single-mode optical fiber and few mode step-index optical fiber is investigated. The relationship between the core radius and index difference for the few mode optical fiber with the same mode field diameter is analyzed using the finite-element method. The low bending loss characteristics of the few mode optical fiber is also demonstrated. The splicing losses of the few-mode optical fiber with the single-mode optical fiber are investigated by the beam propagation method. Numerical results demonstrate the low bending loss transmission and effectively single-mode guiding using the few-mode optical fiber.

Abstract:We propose a few-mode optical fiber for low-bending-loss applications. We demonstrate ultra-lowbending-loss operation in the fiber by tailoring the core radius and index contrast of step-index optical fibers. In addition, we investigate numerically splicing losses in single-mode optical fibers and demonstrate experimentally the ultra-low-bending-loss operation characteristics. The optical fiber elaborated provides a simple technique to realize the low-bending-loss operation.

Abstract:The design of a low-bending loss few-mode optical fibre is proposed. Low-bending loss for the fundamental mode is achieved by increasing the index contrast between the core and the cladding, and a microstructured mode filtering region is applied to filter out the higher-order modes in the fibre. Numerical results show that the fundamental mode loss is lower than 0.03 dB/turn and the high-order mode is higher than 4.4 dB/turn at the bending radius of 5 mm and 1300-1600 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:A few-mode microstructured optical fiber is designed for low bending loss applications. Low-index rods and air-holes are applied to lower the splicing loss with the standard single-mode optical fiber (SMF) and to achieve ultra-low bending loss. Abstract:Aiming at solving the problems of coupling between modes in a core and mode coupling between cores in few-mode multi-core fiber, a fiber with seven cores each with step index is proposed, and each core can support five modes. Each core has a central low refractive index region and a high refractive index ring to ensure that there is a large refractive index difference between modes in the core, so as to reduce the problem of mode coupling. The bending loss of central core and outer core, the crosstalk characteristics between modes and the influence of core parameters on crosstalk performance are simulated and analyzed by the finite element method. The simulation results show that at a wavelength of 1.55 μm and a bending radius of 50 mm, the bending loss of the proposed multi-core fiber is much lower than its attenuation loss, and the crosstalk between the adjacent cores of the five core modes are less than –20 dB/100 km. Therefore, this multi-core fiber can realize independent transmission of the core modes with long-distance under small bending radius.

Abstract:A novel refractive index profile for low bending loss fiber was proposed and the influence on the fiber bending loss was analyzed in detail as a function of various factors,including core diameter, first cladding thickness,difference between core-cladding refractive indices,and ratio of core to cladding diameter.By utilizing Complete Synthetic Technology (VAD+OVD) for the fabrication of optical fiber preforms,combining with a modified fiber drawing technique,a series of super-fine low water-peak bend-resistant optical fibers were fabricated and tested,with a naked diameter as small as 80 μm and coated diameter of 140 μm.The fiber is capable of meeting the standard transmission requirement when being bended to a radius as low as 7.5 mm.

Abstract:This paper investigates optical properties of few-mode fiber with non-uniform refractive index, namely: the few mode fiber with U-shape refractive index and the two-mode and four-mode few-mode fiber with bent radius. Finite element method is used to analyze the mode distributions based on their non-uniform refractive index. Effective mode control can be achieved through these few mode fibers to achieve vector beam generation. Finally, reflection spectra of a few-mode fiber Bragg grating are calculated theoretically and then measured under different bending conditions. Experimental results are in good accordance with the theoretical ones. These few mode fibers show potential applications in generation of cylindrical vector beam both for optical lasing and sensing systems.
Fourteen-core Dual-Mode Fiber with Low Bending Loss and Large Mode Area

Abstract:A 37-core optical fiber with 14 air holes is proposed in this paper. This optical fiber can transmit the fundamental mode and part of the second mode. Effects of structure parameters on effective refractive index, bending loss and effective area of the fundamental mode HE11 and the second-order mode HE21 are investigated systematically. By adjusting the structure parameters, at wavelength of 1550 nm and bending radius of 5 cm, the effective mode field area of the fundamental mode is 1776.289 μm2 , and the bending loss is 4.656×10-5 dB/m. Due to the flexibility of multi-core structure, it is significant for theoretical research and practical manufacturing.

Abstract:We propose a solid-core Bragg few-mode fiber with alternating layers of high/low refractive indices. The refractive index of the low-index layer in the cladding is the same as that of the fiber core. The influences of filling ratio, periodic structure width and core size on n(eff), Delta n(eff) and Alpha(eff) are investigated. Bending loss of each guided mode and differential mode delay (DMD) between adjacent spatial modes are also studied at 1550 nm. With appropriate geometrical parameters, the minimum effective refractive index difference (min Delta n(eff)) between adjacent modes is 2x10(-3) at 1550 nm. Wavelength-dependent performance is analyzed subsequently ranging from 1180 nm to 1630 nm. Numerical simulations indicate that such fiber could support 7 linearly polarized (LP) modes and have good bending insensibility performance. These results illustrate that the proposed fiber could be a promising candidate for mode division multiplexing to enhance optical transmission capacity.

Abstract:Few-mode optical fibers have played an increasingly important role in breaking through the transmission capacity limitations of single-mode optical fiber and alleviating the bandwidth crisis in optic fiber communication systems in recent years. Nevertheless, traditional solid core few-mode optical fibers usually suffer from optical fiber nonlinearity and mode coupling, leading to mode crosstalk between channels. Hollow core negative curvature fibers (HC-NCF) have attracted widespread attention due to their advantages such as low latency, low nonlinearity, low dispersion, low transmission loss, and large operating bandwidth. In this work, a novel low-loss few-mode HC-NCF with symmetrically double ring nested tube structure is designed, which supports six core modes including LP 01 、LP 11 、LP 21 、LP 02 、LP 31a 、LP 31b . The designed optical fiber is based on silica dioxide substrate and adopts a unique symmetrical double ring nested cladding structure, which can effectively suppress the coupling between the core mode and the cladding mode. The finite element method (FDE) was used to numerically analyze the properties of the proposed few-mode HC-NCF and optimize the structural parameters of the few-mode HC-NCF. Moreover, the confinement loss and bending loss of all core modes were investigated. The simulation results show that the proposed few-mode HC-NCF can support the independent transmission of six weakly coupled core modes (with the effective refractive index difference greater than 1×10 -4 between the adjacent core modes, which greatly avoids the coupling between the adjacent modes in the fiber core). Within the 400 nm bandwidth (1.23-1.63 μm, covering the O, E, S, C, and L bands), all six modes in the fiber core maintain low loss transmission. Moreover, within the range of 1.3-1.63 μm, the CL of LP 01 , LP 11 and LP 21 modes is less than 1×10 -3 dB/m, and the CL of LP 02 and LP 31b modes is less than 3×10 -3 dB/m. The CL of each mode reached the lowest value at 1.4 μm, and the LP 01 mode has the lowest CL of 4.3×10 -7 dB/m. In addition, for a bending radius of 7 cm, each mode maintains the low bending loss characteristic over a certain operating wavelength range. Within the range of 1.23-1.61 μm, the BL of LP 01 is less than 4.5×10 -4 dB/m, and the BL of LP 11 is less than 1.3×10 -3 dB/m. The tolerance analysis shows that even with a structural parameters deviation of ±1%, the few-mode HC-NCF can still maintain the characteristic of low-loss and weak coupling. The designed few-mode HC-NCF has ultra-low CL and bending-insensitive characteristics, while supporting independent transmission of six modes, which will find huge application potential in the future high performance mode division multiplexing systems.

Abstract:We propose a bend-insensitive distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing by using a singlemode-multimode-singlemode optical fiber structure for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The sensing fiber is a graded-index multimode fiber (GI-MMF) sandwiched by two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) with centrally alignment splicing at the interface between GI-MMF and SMF to excite the fundamental mode only in GI-MMF. The sensing system can resist a minimal bend radius of 1.25mm while maintaining the measurement performance, with which the measured coefficient of strain is 421.6MHz/%. We also demonstrate that the higher-order modes exciting in GI-MMF can be easily influenced by bending, so that the fundamental mode exciting is essential for bend-insensitive distributed sensing.

Abstract:We study the coupling between two identical weakly-coupled few-mode fibers based on coupled-mode theory. The coupling behavior of non-circular-symmetric modes, such as LP11 and LP21, is investigated analytically and numerically. By carefully choosing the fiber core separation and coupler length, we can design orientation-insensitive fiber couplers for non-circular-symmetric modes at arbitrary coupling ratios. Based on the design method, we propose an orientation-insensitive two-mode fiber coupler at 850nm working as a mode multiplexer/demultiplexer for two-mode transmission using standard single-mode fiber. Within the band from 845 to 855nm, the insertion losses of LP01 and LP11 modes are less than 0.03dB and 0.24dB, respectively. When the two-mode fiber coupler is used as mode demultiplexer, the LP01/LP11 and LP11/LP01 extinction ratios in the separated branches are respectively above 12.6dB and 21.2dB. Our design method can be extended to two-mode communication or sensing systems at other wavelengths.

Abstract:The liquid-core fiber with relatively high refractive index difference between the core and cladding is proven to be bending insensitive. The single mode condition and bending loss of the fiber with a mixture of toluene and chloroform as its core material are studied. The results show that the bending loss of this fiber is not only much smaller than the conventional silica single mode fiber but also can be tuned by the temperature and liquid mixture ratio. This kind of fiber may find its potential applications in all-optical network.

Abstract:One of the major trends in optical fiber science is to be able to obtain fibers with large-mode-area (LMA), optimized for various applications such as high power delivery, fiber amplifiers, and fiber lasers. In order to ensure the high beam quality and the ultimate controllability of the damage threshold in the fiber's material, it is required to have a LMA property and of course to operate in a single mode fashion. While the conventional fibers have some difficulties in providing simultaneously LMA, single mode operation, as well as low macro-bending loss characteristics, all-silica holey fibers are highly attractive candidates for realizing LMA single-mode fibers with low bending losses. In this paper, we present a novel type of effectively single-mode holey fibers with effective mode area of about 1400 mum(2), small allowable bending radius as small as 5 cm, good beam quality factor of 1.15, and high confinement losses exceeding 1 dB/m for the higher-order mode at 1.064-mum wavelength.
