Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:The Terahertz modulator based on polymer electro-optic modulation is designed by Macher-Zehnder structure. The ridge waveguide is used to realize TM00 mode transmission, and the Y-branch with double circular arch type is to decrease the loss of transmission in modulator. The transmission of THz is analyzed by the beam propagate method (BPM). The structure parameters of the M-Z modulator, such as the size of ridge waveguide, the type of Y-branch and the optical offset structure for phase, are optimized to realize THz amplitude modulation. The depth of modulation is 83.8% when the applied field is 31.5V.

Abstract:A silicon-on-insulator-based adiabatic waveguide taper with a high coupling efficiency and small footprint is presented. The taper was designed to reduce the incidence of mode conversion to higher-order and radiation modes inside the waveguide. In connecting a 0.5-mu m-wide output waveguide and a 12-mu m-wide input waveguide of a grating coupler, a compact 120-mu m-long taper was demonstrated, achieving a transmission of 98.3%. Abstract:In this paper, a dual cylindrical metallic grating-cladding polymer hollow terahertz waveguide is proposed for the transmission of a wavelength range between 100 μm and 1.5 mm with low loss. The waveguide is comprised of copper cylindrical gratings embedded in both sides of hollow high-density polyethylene tubing. Numerical calculation shows that the dual cylindrical metallic grating-cladding polymer hollow waveguide can guide terahertz waves in the central air core with excellent mode qualities, and experimental results confirm that the attenuation constant of linear polarization HE11 mode can be reduced to 0.62 dB/m.

Abstract:Efficient broadband coupling of light between a dielectric waveguide and a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. A plasmonic linear taper is used as a coupler which connects the two types of waveguides. Broadband coupling is realized by such a compact plasmonic taper with a length of only 0.4 microm, which achieves a coupling efficiency of 70% (1.5 dB) at the 1.55 microm telecommunication wavelength.

Abstract:We propose a low-loss air-core polarization maintaining polymer fiber for terahertz (THz) wave guiding. The periodic arrangement of square holes with round corners in the cladding offers a bandgap effect for mode guiding. Numerical simulations show that the bandgap effect repels the modal power from the absorbent background polymers, resulting in a significant suppression of absorption loss of the polymers by a factor of more than 25. The phase-index birefringence of the proposed THz fiber is in the order of 10(-3).

Abstract:A novel tapered optical fiber coupler was proposed with its waveguide refractive index gradually changing, induced by germanium defects under the UV irradiation. The refractive index change of 6*10-3 in the single-mode communication fiber was achieved in the experiment by means of pre-treating the fiber in high pressure and low temperature environment. A particular index taper profile function was obtained by delicately controlling the exposure conditions, and the mode field radius (MFR) was reduced from 4.8 to 3.2 micrometer in single mode fibers. The coupled wave theory analysis shows that the tapered coupler is capable of excellent transmission for fundamental mode with very small model conversions.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) circular photonic crystal fiber (CPCF) with the similar distribution of air holes as that in variable-size circular photonic crystal in polyethylene material was introduced. Guiding and dispersion properties of the CPCF with different parameters have been accurately computed. Results show that the CPCF is a useful terahertz waveguide which has good ability to confine THz fields, low group-velocity dispersion parameter and low relative dispersion slope. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) band is expected to satisfy the ever‐increasing demand for high‐capacity wireless data transfer. Multifunctional photonic devices with compactness and low loss are highly pursued for future THz communications. Here, a strategy for planar THz photonics is proposed that enables free wavefront manipulation with submillimeter thin liquid crystal polymer (LCP) films. Such elements work on the spatial geometric phase modulation, which is accomplished by preprogramming the axis orientations of LCP. The LCP monomers follow the guidance of local photoalignment agent and are further polymerized under UV exposure at the existence of a doped photo‐initializer. Thanks to the high resolution and excellent flexibility of the photopatterning technique, THz elements with versatile functions can be realized. As examples, waveplates, polarization gratings, and lenses, which are suitable for the polarization control, beam deflecting, focusing, or collimating, are demonstrated. Due to the intrinsic flexibility of LCP films, an f‐tunable lens enabled by mechanically induced deformation is exhibited. Specific mode generators for vortices and Bessel beams are also presented, which can function as separate channels for the mode division multiplexing in THz communications. This work provides a robust platform for fabricating integrated, low‐loss, and tunable THz elements suitable for the advanced THz apparatuses.

Abstract:Waveguide taper, a key component in the photonic integrated circuit (PIC), enables on-chip mode conversion, but large-footprint tapers are detrimental to the PIC, which desires compact and efficient devices. Polarization sensitivity also limits the tapers in the applications involving orthogonal modes. In this work, we design an efficient polarization-insensitive ultra-short MMI-based waveguide taper, through the mode spreading principle and the self-image principle. The proposed taper is 26.3 µm long, one order of magnitude shorter than the standard linear taper. We fabricate the taper, and experimentally demonstrate that it exhibits a high transmission efficiency of ∼70% and a wide 1 dB bandwidth of >54nm, for both TE and TM polarizations.

Abstract:We propose a kind of square porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for polarization-maintaining terahertz (THz) wave guidance. An asymmetry is introduced by implementing rectangular array air holes in the porous core of the PCF, and ultrahigh birefringence and low effective material loss (EML) can be achieved simultaneously. The properties of THz wave propagation are analyzed numerically in detail. The numerical results indicate that the proposed fiber offers a high birefringence of 0.063 and a low EML of 0.081 cm(-1) at 1 THz. Moreover, a very low flattened dispersion profile is observed over a wide frequency domain of 0.85-1.9 THz. The zero flattened dispersion can be controlled. It is predicted that this PCF would be used potentially in polarization maintaining and dispersion management of THz waves. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A thermally-induced long-period grating on tapered polymer waveguide is designed and fabricated for realizing a broadband reconfigurable LP01-LP11a mode conversion. Our fabricated device shows a 10-dB bandwidth over the entire C+L band and with a maximum conversion efficiency of 99.99% at 1529.55 nm.

Abstract:A novel design featuring a porous core photonic crystal fiber (PC-PCF) is proposed in this paper for terahertz (THz) waveguide application. This work uses finite element method (FEM) and a boundary condition related to perfectly matched layer (PML) for analyzing the guiding properties. This methodology is supported by a fiber type featuring a slotted core and slotted cladding, utilizing Zeonex as the material. It offers high birefringence valued at 0.0978, small confinement loss of 10 −14 dB/cm, a meager amount of effective material loss (EML) valued at 0.011697 dB/cm and a very high core power fraction (CPF) of 67.156%. Additionally, it shows a flattened pattern of dispersion measuring 0.4 ± 0.2 ps/THz/cm at an extensive frequency range of 0.5 THz to 2 THz. Other significant waveguide properties: effective refractive index, numerical aperture (NA), V-parameter, effective area, spot size, and beam divergence of the suggested fiber are numerically analyzed and conferred thoroughly. Regarding its mode of operation, the proposed fiber primarily functions in multimode, but it can also operate in single mode for higher porosity levels and lower core diameters. This unique characteristic renders the proposed PC-PCF structure well-suited for a broad range of applications, offering versatility as to its mode of operation.

Abstract:High efficiency coupling from fiber to slot and strip waveguides using a double-tip coupler is presented. The double tips are inverse tapered, while their distance is decreased. The coupling efficiency reaches 90.9% with a taper length of only 30μm for coupling fiber to slot waveguides. With a mode transformer, the slot waveguide mode can be converted to strip waveguide mode with an efficiency of 99.3% in a length of 15μm. The impact of several parameters, such as distance between tips, taper length, and tip-end width, are simulated and optimized to improve the coupling efficiency. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, a low loss circular photonic crystal fiber (C-PCF) has been suggested as Terahertz (THz) waveguide. Both the core and cladding vicinity of the suggested PCF are constituted by circular-shaped air holes. The optical properties such as effective material loss, effective area, core power fraction and V-parameter have numerically been probed by utilizing full vectorial finite element method (FEM) with perfectly matched layers (FMLs) boundary condition. The reported PCF reveals low absorption loss and large effective area of 0.04 cm −1 and 2.80×10 −07 m 2 respectively at 1 THz operating frequency. In addition, the core power fraction of the fiber is about 50.83 % at the same activation frequency. The V-parameter shows that the proposed PCF acts as a single mode over 0.70 to 1.15 THz frequency. So, the reported PCF offers the best performance in long distance communication applications.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive experimental study of terahertz (THz) wave propagation utilizing surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the interfaces of a thin dielectric core layer sandwiched between two corrugated metallic claddings. THz wave impinges on the structured surfaces at normal incidence. Long-lasting oscillation propagation features are observed in the temporal waveform after traveling through the periodic arrays. The enhanced THz transmission can be achieved due to the coupling between incident waves to SPPs at the bottom and top interfaces. The finite element method is used to simulate the field distribution and the transmission mode in the waveguide. The hybrid waveguide with low absorption has great potential applications in THz integrated devices.

Abstract:This paper presents the transmission characteristics of flexible solid circular dielectric waveguides in the terahertz frequency band. In this paper, we measured the electrical properties of certain polymers within 325–500 GHz. Through simulation and measurement, the transmission loss, bending loss, and electric field distribution of solid-core polymer dielectric waveguides were analyzed and discussed. Additionally, we considered the surrounding cladding of the dielectric waveguide, the signal-feeding mode transmitter, and the interconnection of the dielectric waveguide. Ultimately, in the operating frequency range of 325–500 GHz, we selected PTFE rods with diameters of 0.5 mm and 1 mm as the dielectric waveguides, with measured transmission loss of less than 30 dB/m and 33 dB/m, respectively, and bending loss of less than 1 dB/m. The described dielectric waveguide has engineering significance for short-distance connections in complex geometric environments and provides a reference for subsequent research.
