Abstract:A novel method for trace gas detection is presented and developed. A fiber laser with a gas cell in the loop is constructed, whose output spectrum is changed with the concentration of the gas e. g., acetylene. As the concentration of acetylene changes from 0 to 100% under a standard atmosphere, the peak of output spectrum shifts 0.03nm. It means to our system, a resolution of 3.75 KHz in light frequency change will lead to a sensitivity of ppm in gas concentration measurement, which makes it a economical and promising technique to measure low density gas.

Abstract:An erbium-doped fiber (EDF) loop laser, based on a gas-self-filter (GSF), is developed with single or multiple wavelength emission. The GSF is a type of Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a gas cell in one arm. By matching the destructive wavelength of the interferometer with the gas absorption line, the self-filtering function is achieved. A GSF-based multi-wavelength laser with a side-mode suppression ratio of ~50 dB is performed. As an example, C₂H₂ gas is detected using a single-wavelength GSF-based laser with correlation spectroscopy, and a good linearity of the measurement is obtained. The present laser has the potential advantage for multiple gas detection, e.g., being free of wavelength calibration.

Abstract:We proposed a narrow spectral bandwidth erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser Q-switched by a homemade saturable dynamic induced grating (SDIG) which is introduced via reforming the structure of a fiber saturable absorbers (FSA) with a piece of EDF and a fiber Bragg grating. The SDIG integrates both saturable absorption and spectral filtering effect simultaneously, which was confirmed through theoretical analysis and experimental results for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Further study verified that the spectral width of the Q-switched emissions is decided by the length of the SDIG and the input power of the pump source. The Q-switched pulse with the narrowest spectral width of about 29.1 pm achieved in this work is the narrowest bandwidth pulse in the domain of the FSA Q-switched fiber lasers when the length of SDIG and pump power are 20 cm and 250 mW, respectively. Our method provides a simple way to obtain the Q-switched pulses with narrow bandwidths, which have promising applications for nonlinear frequency conversion, Doppler LIDAR and coherent beam combinations.

Abstract:In this paper, a single-wavelength fiber laser for gas sensing is developed, which is composed of an Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and a gas interference filter. The filter is an asymmetric optical fiber interferometer with a pressure-maintaining C2H2 gas cell in one arm. The output laser light can be auto-aligned to any absorption peak of C2H2 around 1550 nm with an approximately same linewidth. The wavelength fluctuations are smaller than 0.005 nm. An enhanced light source with absorption peak of different gas can be realized by replacing corresponding gas as the filter in the cell for various absorption-based gas concentration measurements.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (MEDFL) with simple line structure is experimentally demonstrated by using a Sagnac interferometer as a comb filter. It is shown that the multi-wavelength lasing is quite stable at room temperature due to the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect among different laser channels in the dispersion-shifted fiber cooperated in the laser cavity.

Abstract:We reported on the generation of the dual-wavelength rectangular pulse in an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with a topological insulator saturable absorber. The rectangular pulse could be stably initiated with pulse width from 13.62 to 25.16 ns and fundamental repetition rate of 3.54 MHz by properly adjusting the pump power and the polarization state. In addition, we verified that the pulse shape of the dual-wavelength rectangular pulse can be affected by the total net cavity dispersion in the fiber laser. Furthermore, by properly rotating the polarization controllers, the harmonic mode-locking operation of the dual-wavelength rectangular pulse was also obtained. The dual-wavelength rectangular pulse EDFL would benefit some potential applications, such as spectroscopy, biomedicine, and sensing research.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable linear cavity erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on Sagnac loop incorporating with polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The Sagnac loop was composed of 0.5 m length PM-PCF, 1 × 2 optical coupler with 50:50 splitting ratio, and one polarization controller (PC). For the proposed fiber laser, the working threshold was 35 mW, the 3 m length EDF was used as gain medium, and 0.5 m length EDF was selected as saturable absorber to improve lasers stability. In the experiment, the comb filter effect was generated by Sagnac interferometer, and period was 2.52 nm. When the pump power was 150 mW, single-wavelength tunable laser output was realized within the range of 1528.73–1531.45 nm through adjusting PC, wavelength tuning interval was more than 0.58 nm, power difference was less than 3.681 dB, and signal to noise ratio (SNR) were higher than 31.101 dB. For the designed fiber laser, different groups of dual- and triple-wavelength lasers output were obtained, the power difference was lower than 7.349 and 7.724 dB, and SNR was more than 31.752 and 38.623 respectively. The single-, dual- and triple-wavelength laser stability was test within 20 min, and power and wavelength fluctuation were 3.325 dB and 0.07 nm respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Suppressing nonlinear effects in high-power fiber lasers based on fiber gratings has become a hotspot. At present, research is mainly focused on suppressing stimulated Raman scattering in a high-power fiber laser. However, the suppression of spectral broadening, caused by self-phase modulation or four-wave mixing, is still a challenging attribute to the close distance between the broadened laser and signal laser. If using a traditional fiber grating with only one stopband to suppress the spectral broadening, the signal power will be stripped simultaneously. Confronting this challenge, we propose a novel method based on phase-shifted long-period fiber grating (PS-LPFG) to suppress spectral broadening in a high-power fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system in this paper. A PS-LPFG is designed and fabricated on 10/130 passive fiber utilizing a point-by-point scanning technique. The resonant wavelength of the fabricated PS-LPFG is 1080 nm, the full width at half maximum of the passband is 5.48 nm, and stopband extinction exceeds 90%. To evaluate the performance of the PS-LPFG, the grating is inserted into the seed of a kilowatt-level continuous-wave MOPA system. Experiment results show that the 30 dB linewidth of the output spectrum is narrowed by approximately 37.97%, providing an effective and flexible way for optimizing the output linewidth of high-power fiber MOPA laser systems.

Abstract:A Sagnac loop filter with two pieces of high birefringence fiber having equal lengths, and spliced together at a fixed angle of 30 degrees displacement between the two principle axes, is proposed in this letter. Gain equalization of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is implemented by tuning only the polarization controller in the loop filter. Experimental result shows that there remains a deviation of +/- 1 dB in the region of the flattened profile with the useful bandwidth of about 23 nm, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of the method. An effective mathematical model and mechanism is also given for further explanation.

Abstract:We demonstrate a C-band dual-wavelength synchronized mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser based on a common single-wall carbon nanotube saturable absorber and two loop resonators. The synchronous mode-locked pulses laser is with a repetition rate of 16.28 MHz and durations of 1.95 ps and 1.21 ps at 1533 nm and 1562 nm, respectively. The tolerance of a cavity-length mismatch is about 830μm . The proposed dual-wavelength laser system exhibits a flexibly controlled performance and a long-term stability, which offers great potential for a number of applications, such as difference-frequency terahertz-wave generation and field-enhancement Raman microscopy.

Abstract:Wavelength-switchable fiber laser systems have many potential applications. Herein, the use of an erbium-doped fiber laser based on parallel fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) (ASE: amplified spontaneous emission; BRM: broadband reflection mirror; CCD: charged-coupled device; EDFL: erbium-doped fiber laser; FBG: fiber Bragg gratings; IR: infrared; MZI: Mach–Zehnder interferometer; OSA: optical spectrum analyzer; OC: output coupler; PC: polarization controller; SNR: signal-to-noise ratios; 3D: three-dimensional; wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)) is proposed to achieve C + L band triple-wavelength-switchable laser output at approximately 1.5 μm. In the proposed system configuration, three parallel FBGs with different resonant wavelengths were fabricated using an 800 nm femtosecond pulsed laser. The proposed fiber laser incorporates first-order FBGs with the periods of 538, 542, and 547 nm. The femtosecond laser was propagated through polyimide coating and cladding and was focused onto the fiber core by a 63× oil lens, while FBGs were inscribed with the use of a point-by-point method to generate resonant wavelengths at 1555.3, 1569.2, and 1583.1 nm. When the FBGs were used as wavelength selectors, a lasing threshold of 85 mW was obtained, and switchable lasing with stable single- and dual-wavelength outputs was achieved based on the adjustment of a polarization controller. Concerning the switchable single-wavelength lasing, the signal-to-noise ratio was greater than 37.23 dB, and the 3 dB linewidth was less than 0.09 nm. The respective power fluctuation measurements were less than 0.22 and 0.68 dB for the single- and dual-wavelength lasers at 26 °C over a scan time of 30 min.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength switchable C-band erbium-doped fiber laser based on a hybrid comb filter composed of a Sagnac loop and Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is designed and experimentally demonstrated. In the designed ring cavity fiber laser, the MZI is composed of bi-tapered single-mode fiber fabricated by etching with hydrofluoric acid. In the experiment, the wavelength intervals in the comb spectra of the Sagnac loop and MZI are 3.4 and 18.8 nm, respectively, and by combining the Sagnac loop and MZI, measurements of the hybrid comb spectrum are obtained. When the pump power is 91 mW, lasing occurs at 1529.2 nm. Adjustment of the variable attenuator (VA) can provide 1541.9 and 1558.6 nm single-wavelength switchable lasers, for which the maximum peak power difference is less than 3.59 dB, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exceeds 19.25 dB, and the peak power fluctuation is less than 0.34 dB over a 30 min scan time at 26 °C. For dual-wavelength switchable laser emission, four different sets of wavelengths can be realized, and the SNR exceeds 15.57 dB with power fluctuations of less than 1.6 dB, under the same monitoring conditions. By further adjusting the VA, stable and tunable triple-wavelength lasing is also realizable; under these conditions, the SNR exceeds 15.02 dB and the power fluctuation is less than 0.91 dB. Furthermore, four- and five-wavelength lasing can also be achieved by adjusting the VA again, with SNRs exceeding 19.05 and 14.98 dB, respectively.

Femtosecond Laser-Written Small-Period Long-Period Fiber Grating for an L-Band Normal Dispersion Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

Abstract:We utilize a femtosecond laser-inscribed small-period long-period fiber grating (SP-LPFG) to induce a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect for mode-locking pulses in a normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The SP-LPFG has a length of 2.5 mm and a period of 25 μm. At wavelengths of 1556 nm and 1561 nm, it exhibits polarization-dependent loss (PDL) values of 20 dB and 14.5 dB, respectively, sufficient to trigger the NPR mechanism. With the pump power increased to 500 mW, the laser achieves normal dispersion mode-locked pulses centered at 1575 nm in the L-band, with a 3 dB bandwidth of 1.35 nm and a pulse width of 1.61 ps. The radio frequency (RF) spectrum reveals an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of up to 63.6 dB, demonstrating the excellent stability of the laser operation. This SP-LPFG holds promising applications, paving the way for efficient, compact, and stable normal dispersion ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:In recent years, mid-infrared fiber lasers based on gas-filled photonic crystal hollow-core fibers (HCFs) have attracted enormous attention. They provide a potential method for the generation of high-power mid-infrared emissions, particularly beyond 4 μm. However, there are high requirements of the pump for wavelength stability, tunability, laser linewidth, etc., due to the narrow absorption linewidth of gases. Here, we present the use of a narrow-linewidth, high-power fiber laser with a highly stable and precisely tunable wavelength at 2 μm for gas absorption. It was a master oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) structure, consisting of a narrow-linewidth fiber seed and two stages of Thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs). The seed wavelength was very stable and was precisely tuned from 1971.4 to 1971.8 nm by temperature. Both stages of the amplifiers were forward-pumping, and a maximum output power of 24.8 W was obtained, with a slope efficiency of about 50.5%. The measured laser linewidth was much narrower than the gas absorption linewidth and the wavelength stability was validated by HBr gas absorption in HCFs. If the seed is replaced, this MOPA laser can provide a versatile pump source for mid-infrared fiber gas lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a tunable and switchable low-threshold multi-wavelength erbiumdoped fiber pulsed laser. It is based on a composite structure of Lyot filter and nonlinear optical loop mirror. At a threshold of 30 mW, single-wavelength and dual-wavelength states can be obtained with a tuning range of 5 nm for the single wavelength and 1 nm for the dual wavelength. By adjusting the pump power and polarization controllers, the laser can achieve at most eightuple-wavelength operation. We use the nonlinear optical loop mirror as a saturable absorber to realize stable pulse output. The pulse sequences begin to appear when the pump power is 100 mW. The pulse repetition rate corresponding to the dual-wavelength is 40.52 kHz, and the pulse width is 144 ns. Due to its abundant range of wavelengths and significant pulse phenomenon, the proposed laser is widely used in fiber sensing and other fields.

The output pow er is above 2 dBm. The 3 dB bandwidth is below 0.1 nm. The wavelength repetitio n precision is below 0.01 nm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) operation by using a saturable absorber based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FONP) in magnetic fluid (MF). As a kind of transition metal oxide, the FONP has a large nonlinear optical response with a fast response time for saturable absorber. By depositing MF at the end of optical fiber ferrule, we fabricated a FONP-based saturable absorber, which enables a strong light-matter interaction owing to the confined transmitted optical field within the single mode fiber. Because of large third-order optical nonlinearities of FONP-based saturable absorber, large modulation depth of 8.2% and non saturable absorption of 56.6% are demonstrated. As a result, stable passively Q-switched EDFL pulses with maximum output pulse energy of 23.76 nJ, repetition rate of 33.3 kHz, and pulse width of 3.2 {\mu}s are achieved when the input pump power is 110 mW at the wavelength of 980 nm. The laser features a low threshold pump power of ~15 mW.

Abstract:This letter describes a switchable multi-wavelength actively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) structure with Sagnac filter and electro-optic modulator (EOM). The intensity-dependent loss (IDL) generated by the constructed NPR structure can suppress the mode competition caused by EDF, combined with a comb filter Sagnac loop which composed of only 2-m-long polarization maintaining fiber (PMF), the constructed laser generates nine-wavelengths laser output with a constant wavelength interval of 3 nm. When the NPR structure is removed, the constructed laser generates quadruple-wavelengths laser output with 3 nm constant wavelength interval. It is proved that the effect of the NPR can suppress mode competition to achieve multi-wavelength laser output. In the laser with the constructed NPR structure, the nine-wavelengths laser output has a maximum wavelength shift of 0.21 nm and a maximum power fluctuation of 0.69 dB, while when the NPR structure is removed from the constructed laser, for the quadruple-wavelengths laser output, the maximum wavelength shift is 0.16 nm and the maximum power fluctuation is 0.29 dB. When the constructed laser with or without NPR structure, the minimum Q-switched pulse width and maximum average output power are 1.42μs, 1.24μs and 3.2μW, 10.2μW, respectively.
