Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:A new tunable optical delay scheme based on real-time Fourier transformation and ramp-type phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is adopted to implement the real-time Fourier transformation, and tunable delay is realized by changing the ramp-type modulating signal's period. Experimental results agree well with the theory. The signal distorts little after the delay, and a 18 ps delay is achieved for a 2-ps-wide optical pulse.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to build a tunable fiber-optic delay line based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a single-mode optical fiber. The frequency of a continuous-wave lightwave served as the Brillouin probe is linearly swept to determine the location in the fiber where a pulse signal served as the Brillouin pump is reflected and thus delayed via SBS-intensified acoustic grating. The novel fiber-optic delay line has a linear tunability of more than 4 µs. The pulse distortion is also studied.

Abstract:An on-chip tunable photonic delay line is a key building block for applications including sensing, imaging, and optical communication. However, achieving long and tunable delay lines within a small footprint remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate an on-chip tunable photonic delay line using ultralow loss high confinement Si3N4 waveguides with integrated microheaters. As an example of potential application, we embed a 0.4 m delay line within an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. We show that the delay line can extend the OCT imaging range by 0.6 mm while maintaining a high signal to noise ratio. Our tunable photonic delay line is achieved without any moving parts which could provide high stability, critical for interference based applications.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the nonlinear coupled model equations of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) under self-pumping circumstances and by semi-implicity Runge–Kutta method, dynamic simulation model is established. By this model in case of self-pumping, the characteristics of all-optically tuned group delay of transmission optical pulse are discussed in detail. The paper studies how the delay time of transmission pulse is affected by the parameters of grating and incidence pulse, and analyzes the conditions for obtaining the optimally tuned delay. Results show that the optimal combination of grating parameters, operating wavelength, and pulse parameters should be carefully selected for obtaining delay maximum and actually realizing all-optically tuned delay of dispersionless transmission pulse.

Abstract:As light cannot be stopped or directly stored in any media, optical delay lines are usually used to temporally trap the optical signals. We report a wide-range continuously tunable optical delay line chip consisting of a ring resonator array and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switch array on the 60-nm-thick silicon waveguide platform. The ring delay line provides continuous delay tuning of more than 10 ps with a push-pull differential tuning method. The MZI switchable delay line provides digitally programmable delay tuning with a resolution of 10 ps upon reconfiguration of the MZI switches to establish different optical routing paths. Dual-stage MZI switches are used to ensure low crosstalk with an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The delay line chip can generate a maximum delay of > 1 ns with an on-chip insertion loss of 12.4 dB. Optical pulse time-division multiplexing and quasi-arbitrary waveform generation are realized based on the delay line chip. These results represent a significant step towards the realization of highly reconfigurable optical signal processors enabled by optical delay manipulation with broad applications for optical communications and microwave photonics. Abstract:Based on the nonlinear coupled-mode equations (NCMEs) of fibre Bragg grating (FBG), all-optically tuned delay is realized in two linearly apodized FBGs in simulation. The characteristics of tuneable delay under the control of input optical power are analyzed, and the sensitivity of delay time with optical power is discussed. Results show that the delay maximum can be obtained at the optimal points in connection with input power, operating wavelength and grating length.

Abstract:We present a reflective-type optical delay line using waveguide side-coupled 13 microring resonators terminated with a sagnac loop reflector. Light passes through the microring resonator sequence twice, doubling the delay-bandwidth product. Group delay is tuned by p-i-p type microheaters integrated directly in the microring waveguides. Experiment demonstrates that the delay line can potentially buffer 18 bits and the delay can be continuously tuned for 100 ps with a power tuning efficiency of 0.34 ps/mW. Eye diagrams of a 20-Gbps PRBS signal after 10 and 110 ps delays are also examined.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the series-coupled double micro-ring resonator as tunable optical delay line. Tunable optical delay line can be achieved by tunable self-coupling coefficient and attenuation factor of micro-ring waveguide. Through choosing suitable parameters of structure, the series-coupled double micro-ring resonator can obtain flat delay line that mitigates the deleterious effects of group delay dispersion.

Abstract:A widely tunable narrow-linewidth laser consisting of a sampled-grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) laser and an external silica-based multi-period-delayed feedback (MPDF) photonic circuit is fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. The measured results show that a 58-nm lasing wavelength tuning range together with a more than 40 dB side-mode suppression ratio can be achieved. Notably, among the wavelength tuning range, all linewidths remain below 1 kHz, which are narrowed by more than three orders of magnitude compared to the average intrinsic linewidth of 3 MHz for the original SG-DBR laser. Besides, since the proposed MPDF structure has an ultra-dense distribution of the multi-period feedback, the linewidth reduction capability can be maintained over the entire operating wavelength range does not require free spectral range (FSR)-alignment or any extra phase match. Such widely tunable narrow-linewidth laser might offer a compact, cost-effective and easily-implemented solution for next-generation applications including ultra-wideband dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems.

Abstract:A tunable time delay for a 100-ps pulse is achieved via a SOA cascaded band-pass filter, which can be tailored by tuning the filter or changing the SOA injection current. For a single pulse, when the pulse propagates through the cascaded system, a delay of 99.6 ps and an advance of 42.6 ps can be achieved by altering the SOA injection current at two different wavelengths located in the red band and blue band of the filter, respectively. The corresponding tunable delay range is 165 ps, and the maximum delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is 1.65. For an optical sequence, to our knowledge, it is the first time that the time delay is tailored over 145.6 ps corresponding to a DBP of 1.46 by tuning the wavelength from 1556.075 to 1556.955 nm, and 45.2 ps (95.6 ps) advance (delay) by tuning the injection current from 100 to 500 mA at 1556.155 nm (1556.955 nm). The dependence of the time delay on the injection current and filtering configuration has been discussed based on plenty of experiments data. Based on SOA's fast switching, this device can be used for signal synchronization and bit-by-bit signal processing in a communication system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optical tunable delay lines based on novel self-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW) resonators. Due to the co-excitation of the contra-propagating modes in the SCOW resonator, it features a high delay-bandwidth product suitable for broadband optical signal buffering.

Abstract:A novel and simple chirp tuning device of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed, which possesses a C shape and consists of a straight beam and two half-round arches. A linear strain field is induced over the straight beam by applying stress on the arches. As a result, the uniform FBG bonded on the surface of the beam is converted to a linearly chirped fiber grating. The bandwidth of the FBG is tuned linearly by applied stress with the sensitivity up to 0.34 nm/N and a linearity of 0.9982. In the experiment, a chirp bandwidth of about 7 nm can be obtained with the stress of 20 N. Additionally, the reflective spectra are quite flat. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analyses. Due to the characteristic of the bandwidth immunity to environmental temperature variation and large tunable range of bandwidth, the device can be applied in fields such as measurement of stress (strain, curvature, etc.), fiber laser, chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:A novel tunable laser with digital concatenated grating reflectors, which has a flatter envelope of reflection peaks, is designed and fabricated. The key concept of the approach is to utilize multi-sampled gratings which have different Bragg wavelengths and the same sampling period. The difference of each Bragg wavelength is integer multiple of the space between the peaks of sampled gratings. Here, nanoimprint lithographic technology is used to fabricate the complex gratings. The typical threshold current of the tunable laser is 34 mA, and the tuning range is larger than 32 nm. The non-uniformity of the output power is less than 2 dB.

Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates the feasibility of the electrically and continuously tunable optical delay line using a semiconductor laser. The time delays for a 10 Gbps data signal are electrically delayed by adjusting the bias current of laser, and the maximum delay is approximately 41 ps. We also measure the bit error rate against the receiver power by various bias currents and wavelength detuning (Δλ). Measurements are made to verify the feasibility to use in optical communication systems.
