Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used: one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215 ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40 ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.

Abstract:This paper proposes a variable optical delay line based on the discrete harmonic oscillation in the waveguide lattice with a quadratic distribution of coupling coefficients. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation have shown that the device design can achieve a time delay of up to 10 ns, with the resolution of 0.5 ns, and the 3-dB bandwidth over the whole C-band. It allows a data packet of up to 17 bits at the rate of 100 Gb/s. In this design, the propagation path is folded by up to five times (or ten times for the one-port design). Compared with the conventional fiber-delay-line buffer, this design has a small footprint (about 10 mm × 0.5 mm). A group of them can be paralleled and cascaded within a small area (e.g., 20 copies into 1 cm2) as enabled by the microfabrication. With further optimization, this design has a potential for interconnecting and signal processing applications in optical communications and computing.

Abstract:We propose a novel single folded waveguide-based reconfigurable optical delay line. Due to waveguide self-coupling, light travels back and forth along the waveguide, forming resonances. With two phase shifters embedded in the waveguide, resonance modes and coupling can be conveniently controlled. Under proper phases, the delay line can be reconfigured to perform various types of delays. In particular, when the resonance input and mutual coupling strengths are properly matched, the group delay dispersion can be significantly reduced, favoring an optical signal delay with low distortion. The group delay can be continuously tuned at low tuning power by changing the phases.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) optical wavelength demultiplexing is demonstrated by employing multilevel arrayed waveguides as a 2D diffraction grating, named the 2D arrayed waveguide grating (2D-AWG). Since the monochromatic lightwave is diffracted by the 2D-AWG to a series of periodic spots with 2D diffraction orders in both x and y directions while the dispersion direction is never parallel to the x or y direction, we can obtain 2D wavelength demultiplexing exploiting diffraction orders of either the x or y direction. One of the two dispersion components is designed much larger than the other, and the correspondent spatial free spectral range component is set properly to ensure high diffraction efficiency. The input and output ports can also be designed based on the multilevel lightwave circuit (MLC), and their level planes can be tuned parallel to that of the MLC-based 2D-AWG, which makes it feasible to integrate the 2D-AWG with the input port and/or the output port. It provides a promising way to realize large-scale and high-density optical multiplexers/demultiplexers. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:We report on a channel drop filter with a mode gap in the propagating mode of a photonic crystal slab that was fabricated on silicon on an insulator wafer. The results, simulated with the 3-dimensional finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave methods, demonstrated that an index-guiding mode for the line defect waveguide of a photonic crystal slab has a band gap at wave vector k = 0.5 for a mainly TM-like light-wave. The mode gap works as a distributed Bragg grating reflector that propagates the light-wave through the line defect waveguide, and can be used as an optical filter. The filter bandwidth was varied from 1-8 nm with an r/a (r: hole radius, a: lattice constant) variation around the wavelength range of 1550-1600 nm. We fabricated a Bragg reflector with a photonic crystal line-defect waveguide and Si-channel waveguides and by measuring the transmittance spectrum found that the Bragg reflector caused abrupt dips in transmittance. These experimental results are consistent with the results of the theoretical analysis described above. Utilizing the Bragg reflector, we fabricated channel dropping filters with photonic crystal slabs connected between channel waveguides and demonstrated their transmittance characteristics. They were highly drop efficient, with a flattop drop-out spectrum at a wavelength of 1.56 μm and a drop bandwidth of 5.8 nm. Results showed that an optical adddrop multiplexer with a 2-D photonic crystal will be available for application in WDM devices for photonic networks and for LSIs in the near future.

Abstract:Optical delay lines (ODL) are one of the key components in integrated photonic circuits and systems. We propose a novel optical delay line structure based on multimode conversion. The silicon multi-mode converter is optimized via an inverse design method to simultaneously convert the $\mathbf{TEi}$ modes to $\mathbf{TE}_{\mathrm{i}}+1$ modes $(\mathbf{i}=1,2$, and 3) at the wavelength of 1550 nm. It only occupies an area of 4 $\mu \mathbf{m}\times 3 \mu\mathbf{m}$. Simulation results show that the insertion loss of the mode-order converter is less than 1.6 dB and the crosstalk is lower than −22 dB for all three modes.
Broadband Brillouin Slow Light Based on Multifrequency Phase Modulation in Optical Fibers

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:Despite the promise of an orders-of-magnitude increase in transmission capacity, practical implementation of mode-division multiplexing faces a number of challenges. The most important among them is the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) for compensating mode crosstalk and modal dispersion. The most promising method proposed so far for reducing this DSP complexity is strong mode coupling. We propose and demonstrate, for the first time, a method of inducing strong mode coupling and reducing group delay spread using uniform long-period gratings (LPGs). Even though the LPGs have a fixed grating period, mode coupling is effective among all mode groups and over a broad wavelength range. Both insertion loss and mode-dependent loss can be significantly reduced by optimizing the index profile of and the number of modes supported by the fiber in which the LPG is applied.

Abstract:We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/lnP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically integrated Rowland circle grating. The design incorporated ten wavelength channels at 1.55 mu m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm. The total on-chip loss was about 10 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels was as low as -25 dB. It was shown that low-loss etched turning mirrors can reduce the total on-chip loss by about 4 dB compared to traditional 90 degrees curved multimode waveguides. By replacing standard hat grating facets with retro-reflecting V-shaped facets in the echelle grating, the loss was further reduced by 4 dB, Polarization independent operation within a passband of 0.5 nm was achieved by using multimode output waveguide, The potential sources producing the crosstalk have been analyzed and fabrication modifications for further improvement are suggested.

Abstract:Configuration of a novel compact dispersive and focusing device based on a Curved Waveguide Grating (CWG) is presented, which is essentially an integrated optic wavelength demultiplexer consisting of a curved stripe waveguide with tilted grating, a slab waveguide adjacent to it, and a set of output waveguides locate on focal line of the curved waveguide. Underlying wavelength demultiplexing mechanism of CWG is theoretically illustrated by employing the Fourier optics approach. Analysis shows that device based on CWG possesses fine wavelength resolution, compact configuration, and potentially low cost as well, which make it a promising wavelength demultiplexer, or a network performance monitor, in DWDM optical networks.

Abstract:A novel approach for a delay line interferometer (DLI) based purely on forward Bragg scattering is proposed. We have numerically and experimentally demonstrated that a Bragg grating can deliver the functionality of a DLI in its transmission mode along a single common interfering optical path, instead of the conventional DLI implementation with two interfering optical paths. As a proof of concept, a fiber Bragg grating has been designed and fabricated, showing the desired functionality in the transmission mode of the Bragg grating. The proposed "Bragg-DLI" approach is applicable to any kind of Bragg grating technology, such as volume Bragg gratings, dielectric mirrors, silicon photonics, and other optical waveguide based Bragg structures.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to build a tunable fiber-optic delay line based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a single-mode optical fiber. The frequency of a continuous-wave lightwave served as the Brillouin probe is linearly swept to determine the location in the fiber where a pulse signal served as the Brillouin pump is reflected and thus delayed via SBS-intensified acoustic grating. The novel fiber-optic delay line has a linear tunability of more than 4 µs. The pulse distortion is also studied.

Abstract:As light cannot be stopped or directly stored in any media, optical delay lines are usually used to temporally trap the optical signals. We report a wide-range continuously tunable optical delay line chip consisting of a ring resonator array and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switch array on the 60-nm-thick silicon waveguide platform. The ring delay line provides continuous delay tuning of more than 10 ps with a push-pull differential tuning method. The MZI switchable delay line provides digitally programmable delay tuning with a resolution of 10 ps upon reconfiguration of the MZI switches to establish different optical routing paths. Dual-stage MZI switches are used to ensure low crosstalk with an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The delay line chip can generate a maximum delay of > 1 ns with an on-chip insertion loss of 12.4 dB. Optical pulse time-division multiplexing and quasi-arbitrary waveform generation are realized based on the delay line chip. These results represent a significant step towards the realization of highly reconfigurable optical signal processors enabled by optical delay manipulation with broad applications for optical communications and microwave photonics.
