Abstract:Modeling and simulation techniques have been playing a more and more important role in designing and developing high-performance traveling-wave tubes (TWT). Recent developments to the high-frequency circuit simulator (HFCS), a 3-D advanced finite-element electromagnetic-simulation tool for TWT, are presented in this paper, using new preprocessing and postprocessing architecture. And a high performance parallel preconditioner is developed. The numerical example shows that the efficiency of matrix solution is improved.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-speed cable (25 Gb/s) with a longitudinal screen is modeled using HFSS software, which is based on the finite element method. The cable model is constructed directly in HFSS software, where the simulation is performed in the frequency domain up to 20 GHz. Consequently, the single-mode S-parameters of the cable are obtained and transformed into the mixed-mode S-parameters using MATLAB codes. Moreover, the simulated mixed-mode S-parameters are compared with the measurement data obtained by a network analyzer in order to examine the accuracy of the modeling strategy, where a very good agreement is obtained. This HFSS modeling can help us to understand the operation of the cable and its mode conversions before the actual fabrication of the cable.

Abstract:To accurately predict High Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) effects in various systems is highly required for most commercial as well as defense applications, which is mainly based on electromagnetic simulation. Further, the validation of the simulated HIRF effects at different levels is also required. However, it is often difficult and needs some appropriate techniques and facilities. Here, in-house developed parallel Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) solver is at first employed for simulating the HIRF effects of two metallic cases with multiple slots and apertures, which is carried out on a high performance computer with tens of thousands of processors. The uncertainty analysis of the incident plane wave angle related to the electric field distribution in the metallic cases is finished with the help of non-intrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC) method, and the feature selective validation (FSV) is performed to quantify the difference between the measured and simulated field results. It is shown that the results obtained from the FSV method provide high reliability and confidence for our numerical characterization of HIRF effects in the metallic cases and even other complex structures.

Abstract:To validate HFCS-I, a newly developed design tool for high frequency circuits of microwave tubes, the high-frequency parameters (including dispersion, interaction impedance and attenuation constant) of a typical helical slow-wave structure (SWS) for millimetre wave travelling-wave tube are calculated by HFCS-I and MAFIA. Both the direct calculation method and the Non-Resonant Perturbation (NRP) technique are adopted to get the interaction impedance. The obtained high-frequency parameters from HFCS-I and MAFIA are compared in detail and the consistency has proved the reliability and validity of HFCS-I.

Abstract:Predicting the High Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) coupling in complex system is highly required in the aeronautic industry, which can be performed by electromagnetic simulation. But the validation of electromagnetic simulation is a difficult issue which needs proper flowchart and validation methods. In this paper, the numerical simulation by the parallel Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method is validated on a simplify model of a metallic case with apertures under the HIRF environment. Concretely, the uncertainty quantification analysis on the input parameter of incident angles is carried out for the electric field in the center of the model with the method of nonintrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC). Based on this, the feature selective validation (FSV) is performed to quantify the comparison of the experimental data and the best simulation estimate. And the results obtained from the FSV method provide a high reliability for the numerical simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, parallel multiphysics solver implemented on supercomputer is developed with an in-house massively parallel supporting scheme adopted. It integrates fullwave electromagnetic simulation of finite element method with transient thermal and thermal-induced stress simulations through an iterative scheme. Several RF components are simulated so as to capture both temperature and stress effects on their performance degradation, and in particular, the simulated results are validated in comparison with that of commercial software as well as measured ones.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of complex structure simulation, the local nonuniform griding technique is investigated in the finite difference time domain (FDTD) solver, where the single field (SF) and hybrid implicit explicit (HIE) algorithms have been introduced. Some structures with fine details in one direction are simulated by using the proposed stratagem. Typically, the magnetic field for obtaining the sampled currents and far-field data is selectively updated to save memory and CPU time. Reflection error from the truncating boundary is decreased compared to the conventional FDTD method, as well as the stability is validated. Moreover, the original SF-HIE-FDTD updating procedures is modified to improve multithread computing efficiency. A layered rectangular dielectric resonator antenna and a microstrip bandpass filter models have been simulated. Results are in very good agreement with those from the conventional FDTD solver and from the commercial software, but up to 58.14% computation time is saved. Our proposed method is significant for the simulation of microwave circuit and antenna with fine structure, especially, the use of the nonuniform grid.
A Coupled Efficient and Systematic Full-Wave Time-Domain Macromodeling and Circuit Simulation Method for Signal Integrity Analysis of High-Speed Interconnects

Abstract:This paper presents an accurate and systematic approach for analysis of the signal integrity of the high-speed interconnects, which couples the full-wave finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with scattering (S) parameter based macromodeling by using rational function approximation and the circuit simulator. Firstly, the full-wave FDTD method is applied to characterize the interconnect subsystems, which is dedicated to extract the S parameters of the subnetwork consisting of interconnects with fairly complex geometry. Once the frequency-domain discrete data of the S parameters of the interconnect subnetwork is constructed, the rational function approximation is carried out to establish the macromodel of the interconnect subnetwork by employing the vector fitting method, which provides a more robust and accurate solution for the overall problem. Finally, the analysis of the signal integrity of the hybrid circuit can be fulfilled by using the S parameters based macromodel synthesis and simulation program with integrated circuits emphasis (SPICE) circuit simulator. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is accurate and efficient to address the hybrid electromagnetic (interconnect part) and circuit problems, in which the electromagnetic field effects are fully considered and the strength of SPICE circuit simulator is also exploited.

Abstract:A fast simulation method is proposed in this paper to effectively deal with the difficulty of calculating frequency selective surface (FSS) on curved surfaces. This method extracts the equivalent circuit parameter of the FSS unit based on transmission line theory and uses it for building equivalent models of the FSS structure. Numerical examples show that the proposed method can significantly improve the calculation efficiency without losing accuracy. Hence, the equivalent modeling method for FSS (EMMF) can greatly help to verify and optimize the performance design of curved FSS.

Abstract:The wireless channel simulator can perform half-physical simulations of channel characteristics such as path loss, multipath fading, and frequency shift as a measuring instrument for wireless communication system testing and performance evaluation. To support the technical requirements of wireless channel simulation, we constructed a cross band and wide bandwidth dynamic channel simulator based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The actual test results show that the multipath fading distribution results of the channel simulator are consistent with the theory. Thus, it can provide a test method for the whole life cycle of the wireless communication system.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient and systematic approach for transient analysis of hybrid interconnect systems. The approach uses the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to fully characterize the subnetwork of the high-speed interconnects in the form of admittance parameters. It then uses the admittance parameters to construct a macromodel of the subnetwork by the vector fitting method (VFM). The resulting macromodel is ready to be synthesized into a SPICE-compatible circuit simulator to efficiently expedite the transient analysis of the hybrid system with interconnects and linear/nonlinear lumped circuit elements. Numerical examples show the validity of the method.

Abstract:The equivalent circuit simulation plays an important role in the design of ultrasound transducer. However, the existing methods are difficult to achieve the effect of matching and backing layer, and not able to accurately simulate the transducer with cable. Especially in the application of high frequency ultrasound, the long cable has a great influence on the performance of the transducer. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposed an improved equivalent circuit method, which combined Leach model and transmission line model. It can realize the complete simulation of ultrasound transducer with a long cable, matching layer, and backing layer in PSPICE circuit simulation software when the parameters were measured. Its principles were briefly introduced, and ultrasound transducers with different frequencies (12 and 20 MHz), different matching layers, and different cable lengths (0.5–2.5 m) were designed and fabricated to verify the effectiveness of the method, which is also compared with the traditional KLM method using PiezoCAD. The experiment results showed that the long cable, matching layer, and backing layer have a significant impact on the performance of high frequency ultrasound transducers, and this proposed method has good agreement with these results. Moreover, for the simulation of the complete transducer, the effect of this method is better than KLM model. Besides, this method does not need to know the specific equivalent circuit of matching, backing layer, or cable wire, it can accurately predict the impedance and phase of the transducer through the material parameters, which is very helpful for the material selection and optimization of subsequent transducer design and fabrication. The study indicates that this improved equivalent circuit method is suitable to be applied in the general circuit simulation software and provides strong support for the high frequency transducer and system design.

Abstract:An effective numerical method for accurate extraction of the properties of slow-wave structures (SWSs) with the full-wave simulator is proposed in this article. With the short-open-load (SOL) calibration technique, the ABCD matrix of the core SWS can be extracted by calibrating out the effect of error boxes at its two terminals under approximate excitation in full-wave modeling. Then, the per-unit-length properties including the complex transmission coefficient and the complex characteristic impedance can be calculated with the ABCD matrix of the core SWS. The coupling effect among unit cells is reduced by introducing more periods of core SWS in modeling. This method allows us to determine all four per-unit-length parameters of the SWS with good accuracy. After a detailed description is executed on its calculation process, two verification structures (microstrip meander line and planar helix with straight edge connections) are studied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The calculated propagation constant turns out to be consistent with those from the eigenvalue method. Furthermore, the calculated characteristic impedance of the SWS provides a powerful ability in the design of an SWS circuit terminated by other circuits or loads. Both structures are fabricated and their measured S-parameters are confirmed with good impedance matching properties as predicted.

Abstract:A physics-based hybrid implicit-explicit finite-difference time domain (HIE-FDTD) method is developed for electromagnetic modeling of multi-passband frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). Using this self-developed HIE-FDTD simulator, several dualand tri-passband FSSs are designed and further fabricated. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation ones, which prove high accuracy of the self-developed HIE-FDTD algorithm. In addition, the resonant frequencies of the designed FSSs can be effectively adjusted by changing their geometric parameters. This work provides electromagnetic guides of structure and parameter selections for designing multi-passband FSS.

Abstract:This paper aims at the simulation problem which is caused by multiple modular characteristic and high frequency of high frequency link DC solid state transformer (HFL-DCSST).The method of achieving HFL-DCSST's real-time simulation is presented and the theory is analyzed.In the aforementioned method,the control system is achieved in CPU while the main circuit is completed in FPGA.Not only can this action satisfy the demand for simulation step but also make full use of resource.In order to solve the problem which from HFL-DCSST's multiple modular characteristic and high frequency,the theory of inductor segmentation is analyzed.And then,the HPL-DCSST model can real-time running with multi-FPGA simulator.At last,a model of HFL-DCSST is completed in this way,and the result of comparative experiment with Matlab offiine simulation verifies the correctness of the theory and the practicality of HFL-DCSST's real-time simulation.

Abstract:In this work, the scattering field excited by the perfect conducting quadratic surface is comprehensively studied. The numerical steepest descent path method (NSDP) is invoked to calculate the high oscillatory physical optics integral. Its result agrees very well with the Gordon's integral than asymptotical method. Moreover, the computation effort for the highly oscillatory integral is frequency independent. In the end, we use the Fourier quadrature method to calculate transition and deep shadow scattering field excited by the conducting cylinder.

Abstract:It is important for HIRFL to improve the whole operation level if SSC accelerating voltage can be increased. In order to increase the voltage, it should firstly analyze the maximum voltage that SSC RF cavity can achieve in theory. SSC RF cavity was thoroughly analyzed and the main parameters of the cavity were obtained by using a three-dimensional electromagnetic calculation code. Based on the simulation results and the practical operations parameters the possibility of increasing the voltage is discussed. Since the little power loss in high-power operation may affect the stability of the cavity-amplifier system, the power coupling system was also analyzed. The limit of power reflection is got and the improving methods are discussed too.
