Abstract:The crystal model of NaCl-type FCC-TiC (1− x ) N x was established, and the crystal structure of nonstoichiometric TiC (1− x ) N x was optimized by first-principles calculation method. The binding energy, formation energy, elastic modulus, density of states (DOS) and charge density of TiC (1− x ) N x were calculated. The crystal structure, electronic structure and mechanical properties of TiC (1− x ) N x were studied. The effects of bonding types and bonding properties on the mechanical properties were analyzed. The results show that the optimized TiC (1− x ) N x crystal structure, with the increase in N content, lattice constant and cell volume decrease, TiN crystal structure is easy to form, and its thermodynamics is the most stable. The analysis of B/G, B/C44, Cauchy pressure and Poisson's ratio shows that TiC has the highest brittleness, and TiN has the best toughness, while TiC (1− x ) N x is between TiC and TiN. The covalent bonds are mainly Ti-C and Ti-N bonds, but there are also a certain number of C-N bonds, Ti-C and Ti-N ionic bonds, and Ti-Ti metallic bonds. The doping of N changes the interaction force between the electrons in the metallic d layer and the non-metallic 2p orbital electrons, and also changes the interaction force between the electrons in the metallic bond d layer, thus affecting the hardness and toughness of TiC (1− x ) N x . As C atoms are gradually replaced by C atoms in the TiC (1− x ) N x crystal structure, the density of states at EF gradually increases, which leads to the enhancement of the metal bond Ti d –Ti d , thereby improving the conductivity of the material. The transition from Ti–C bond to Ti–N bond leads to the decrease in covalent bond, the enhancement of ionic property, the increase in hardness and the decrease in toughness. The nonstoichiometric TiC (1− x ) N x powders were synthesized by carbothermal reduction technique, and the lattice constants obtained by XRD were basically consistent with the calculated values. XPS analysis shows that there are Ti–C, Ti–N, C–C and C–N bonds in TiC (1− x ) N x . The experimental results are in good agreement with the calculated electronic structure and bond type, which indicates the reliability of the crystal model and calculation method.
