Abstract:In-vessel retention (IVR) is an important severe accident management strategy. The characteristics of the heat transfer and the calculation of heat flux in metal layer are both critical problems for IVR strategy. After the core has melted, a metal layer mainly composed of Fe and Zr will form as the top layer of the molten pool inside the lower head of reactor vessel. The Globe-Dropkin (G-D) correlation has been widely used to calculate the heat flux in the metal layer. However, the Rayleigh number (Ra) for the newly developed China Advanced Passive Plant CAP1400 (∼1011) has been shown to exceed the valid range for the G-D correlation (1.5·10 5≤Ra≤6.8·108). Therefore, the metal layer heat transfer behavior experiment (MELAHT) will be built to verify the G-D correlations under the high Ra condition expected in CAP 1400. The relationship between axial and radial heat transfer in the metal layer will also been studied. The simulating liquid is water. The bottom and the top surface satisfy the uniform temperature condition, while the other surfaces serve as the thermal insulation boundary for MELAHT. In addition, numerical simulation of natural convection with very high Ra is also performed, and the results imply that comparing with the RANS method, the LES method provides a better description to the experimental results.
