Abstract:A rapid injection approach is used to synthesize the copper selenide nanoparticles and two-dimensional single crystal nanoplates. This technique excludes the use of toxic or expensive materials, increasing the availability of two-dimensional binary chalcogenide semiconductors. The structure of the nanocrystals has been studied and the possible formation mechanism of the nanoplates has been proposed. The optical absorption showed that the nanoplates demonstrated wide and tuneable absorption band in the visible and near infrared region. These nanoplates could be interesting for converting solar energy and for nanophotonic devices operating in the near infrared.
Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.
Method for preparing nano Cu2-xSe array on copper substrate by hydrothermal process

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for preparing a nano Cu2-xSe array on a copper substrate by a hydrothermal process, which comprises the following steps: (1) polishing the surface of the copper substrate, soaking the copper substrate in concentrated hydrochloric acid, washing, and drying for later use; (2) dissolving selenium powder in sodium hydroxide solution or potassium hydroxide solution by ultrasound; and (3) transferring the copper substrate and the obtained solution to a high-pressure reaction kettle, adding growth guide agent, adding deionized water or organic solvent B to 4/5-24/25 of the reaction kettle in volume, reacting at 20-200 DEG C for 0.5-50 hours, taking out the copper substrate after the reaction finishes, washing with ethanol, and drying to obtain the nano Cu2-xSe array on the copper substrate. The method has the advantages of simplicity for operation and low equipment requirement, can be used for large-scale production, and has wide application prospects in microelectronic devices and solar cells.

Abstract:The synthesis of copper nanowires (CuNWs) using modified polyols with hexadecylamine or octadecylamine as capping agents, known for their ease of operation, rapid reaction, and suitability for mass production, often encounters challenges such as the presence of copper particles, numerous copper nanorods, difficulty in purifying organic compounds, and air instability as by-products. In addressing these issues, this study introduces an innovative multiphase ultrasonic-assisted separation method. By utilizing ultrasound to accelerate the dissolution of hexadecylamine and facilitate the separation movement of CuNWs and by-products in hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases, the aim of achieving high purification of CuNWs is realized. Through the introduction of an ultra-thin hexadecylamine layer ( 3.5 nm) on the surface of CuNWs and leveraging the active adsorption of silver seed crystals, combined with the control CuNWs reaction concentration, silver-coated CuNWs with a dense and uniform surface thickness of 12–15 nm are obtained. By enhancing purity, stability, and cost-effectiveness, this research represents a significant advancement in the field of one-dimensional nanowires and their devices.

Abstract:Copper selenide-sulfide nanostructures were synthesized using metal-organic chemical routes in the presence of Cu- and Se-precursors as well as S-containing compounds. Our goal was first to examine if the initial Cu/Se 1:1 molar proportion in the starting reagents would always lead to equiatomic composition in the final product, depending on other synthesis parameters which affect the reagents reactivity. Such reaction conditions were the types of precursors, surfactants and other reagents, as well as the synthesis temperature. The use of 'hot-injection' processes was avoided, focusing on 'non-injection' ones; that is, only heat-up protocols were employed, which have the advantage of simple operation and scalability. All reagents were mixed at room temperature followed by further heating to a selected high temperature. It was found that for samples with particles of bigger size and anisotropic shape the CuSe composition was favored, whereas particles with smaller size and spherical shape possessed a Cu2-xSe phase, especially when no sulfur was present. Apart from elemental Se, Al2Se3 was used as an efficient selenium source for the first time for the acquisition of copper selenide nanostructures. The use of dodecanethiol in the presence of trioctylphosphine and elemental Se promoted the incorporation of sulfur in the materials crystal lattice, leading to Cu-Se-S compositions. A variety of techniques were used to characterize the formed nanomaterials such as XRD, TEM, HRTEM, STEM-EDX, AFM and UV-Vis-NIR. Promising results, especially for thin anisotropic nanoplates for use as electrocatalysts in nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), were obtained.

Abstract:A series of copper selenides (Cu2−xSe, Cu3Se2 and CuSe) nanocrystals were prepared by a sonochemical method based on the reaction of copper acetate and sodium selenosulfate in an aqueous system. The phases and sizes of the nanocrystals could be controlled by changing the ratio of [Cu2+]/[SeSO32−] and complexing agents. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to determine the phase, purity, size and morphology of the products.

Abstract:The crystal phases are essential to the physicochemical properties and functionalities of materials. Copper selenide has emerged as an important and appealing semiconductor, which can exist in a variety of polymorphic phases. However, the richness of polymorphs also makes it a challenge to the direct preparation of copper selenide nanocrystals with tunable phases. Herein, two polymorphs, that is, quasi-tetragonal Cu2-xSe nanocubes and metastable wurtzite Cu2Se nanodisks, are successfully synthesized by using a single precursor, copper(I) selenocyanate (CuSeCN), as the Cu and Se sources. The key to phase modulation is the optimal choice of the ligand in the synthesis. The as-prepared nanocrystals possess different morphologies and compositions, giving rise to distinct optical properties and electrical conductivities. Interestingly, the copper selenide nanocrystals can provide a platform for the rational construction of two types of amorphous hollow AuCuSe nanostructures by reaction with Au(I) precursor, in which their final shapes are well kept as that of the original nanocrystal templates. This work provides an easy strategy for the phase-controlled synthesis of copper selenide nanocrystals and enables the design of new materials for broad applications.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) nanotubes and nanowires have been controllably prepared by a solution-phase approach consisting of hydrothermal process and subsequent sonochemical process in different solvent including methanol, ethanol, acetone, dimethyl formamide, water, isopropanol and ethylene glycol. It is revealed that the formation of the Se nanotubes or nanowires is dependent on the breakage or not of the in-situ generated Se nanoparticles. The effects of the solvents on the morphology of Se nanostructures have been preliminarily discussed. Finally, Se nanotubes and nanowires have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Single crystalline copper selenide (Cu2-xSe) nanocrystals (NCs) with well-defined octahedral morphology are successfully synthesized by a colloidal hot-solution injection method from the reaction of anhydrous CuCl with Ph2Se2 under argon flow, in which 1-octadecene (ODE) and oleylamine (OAm) are used as solvent and surfactant, respectively. The Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, EDS, FT-IR and XPS and it is found that they are in the cubic phase with high quality. The growth process of the nanostructures is investigated and it is noted that reaction temperature, reaction time and capping surfactant OAm play significant roles in controlling the morphologies of the final products. Meanwhile, the current-voltage (I-V) behavior of the as-prepared octahedral Cu2-xSe nanostructures is explored for the first time and it is found that the Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are promising candidates for application in photodetection and related areas.

Abstract:Nanocrystallites of nonstoichiometric copper selenide (Cu(2-x)Se) and stoichiometric copper selenides (beta-CuSe and Cu(3)Se(2)) were synthesized in different solutions via sonochemical irradiation at room temperature. The influence of solvents, surfactants, and ultrasonic irradiation on the morphology and phase of products has been investigated. The morphological difference of the products was mainly affected by the solvents and surfactants, which can self-aggregate into lamellar structures or microemulsions, and then these unique structures can act as both supramolecular template and microreactor to direct the growth of copper selenides. On the other hand, it was also found that the sonochemical irradiation and solvents played an important role in the formation of different phases of copper selenides. The proposed formation mechanism of copper selenides is discussed.

Abstract:Copper/silica-based nanostructures with different morphologies and microstructures have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal evaporation of CuO and SiO powders in an argon-hybridized hydrogen ambient at high temperatures. Systematically studies by scanning electron microscopy with field emission gun and transmission electron microscopy show that the composite nanowires have a core–shell structure with an average diameter of ∼120nm and lengths of several hundred nanometers to several ten microns. Electron diffraction pattern and electron energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis reveal that the core coincides with copper and the shell corresponds to amorphous silicon oxide with chemical composition SiO2−x (0≦x≦0.5). Besides the Cu/SiO2−x nanowires, many other nanostructures such as octpous-, pine-, and chain-like structures have also been found. The growth mechanisms of these products were briefly discussed.

Abstract:CdSe/Cu core/shell nanowires (NWs) are successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method for the first time. By utilizing the solution–liquid–solid (SLS) mechanism, CdSe NWs are fabricated by Bi seeds, which act as catalysts. In the subsequent radial overcoating of the Cu shell on the CdSe NWs, Fe ions have been proven to be an indispensable and efficient catalyzer. The thickness of the Cu shell could be well controlled in the range of 3 to 6 nm by varying the growth temperature (from 300 to 360 °C). Our synthetic strategy pioneers a new possibility for the controlled synthesis of semiconductor–metal heterostructure NWs (especially for II–VI semiconductors), such as CdS/Cu, ZnS/Au, and ZnO/Ag, which had broad application prospects in photoconductors, thin-film transistors, and light-emitting diodes. Theoretically, electrons flow from a higher Fermi-level material to the bottom Fermi-level at the metal–semiconductor heterojunction interface, which aligns the Fermi level and establishes the Schottky barrier. It leads to excess negative charges in metals and excess positive charges in semiconductors. Therefore, those effective electron traps reduce the probability of photogenerated electron–hole pair recombination efficiently, which has been widely applied in solar cells, sensors, photocatalysis, and energy storage. Abstract:With the use of elemental metals and selenium as resource materials, ZnSe and CdSe nanocrystals have been prepared through an aqueous method at temperature as low as 80°C in alkaline medium. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). Two kinds of chemical mechanisms for the formation of the products and the influence of experimental conditions are discussed.

Abstract:A convenient hydrothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se, based on the reactions of CuCl2·2H2O and AgNO3 with elemental selenium in dilute aqueous ammonia systems, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) examinations were carried out to determine the phase, grain size, morphology, and purity of the products. The aqueous ammonia system plays an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline CuSe and Ag2Se. A possible mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:A novel method for producing stable copper nanoclusters by incorporating selenides into the framework has been developed. The resulting nanocluster, denoted as Cu32Se7, represents a pioneering example for the investigation of copper–selenide semiconductor nanoclusters. The Cu32Se7 cluster exhibits exceptional performance and high cyclability in the borohydration of alkynes. Copper nanoclusters with stable compositions and precise structures have long been sought after, as they possess properties that are absent in gold and silver counterparts. However, the creation of copper nanoclusters with novel compositions, structures, and functionalities remains largely unexplored in the literature. In this study, we demonstrate that selenide doping is an effective method for fabricating stable copper nanostructures through controlled synthesis and structure determination of a copper–selenide nanocluster. The nanocluster of [Cu32Se7(BnSe)18(PPh3)6]+ (denoted as Cu32Se7, Bn is benzyl) has been prepared by reducing copper salts in the presence of organic diselenides. The atomic structure of the Cu32Se7 cluster, accurately determined through single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, reveals a core–shell arrangement of Cu20Se7@Cu12(BnSe)18(PPh3)6, where Se2− anions are well dispersed in the Cu20 framework. Notably, this cluster represents a rare example of copper–selenide semiconductor nanoclusters. Experimental and theoretical analysis shows strong interactions between Se ligands and metal atoms, resulting in high stability of the Cu32Se7 cluster. Furthermore, the cluster exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydroboration reaction of alkynes, producing a range of vinylboron compounds with adjustable structures and functions. Importantly, the cluster undergoes no structural or nuclearity changes during the reaction, as confirmed by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. This study not only presents a molecular cluster model highlighting the effectiveness of selenide dopants in fabricating new copper nanostructures but also paves the way for utilizing stable copper nanoclusters in diverse and exciting areas beyond catalysis.

Abstract:AbstractSemiconducting nanosheets with microscale lateral size are attractive building blocks for the fabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices. The phase‐controlled chemical synthesis of semiconducting nanosheets is of particular interest, because their intriguing properties are not only related to their size and shape, but also phase‐dependent. Herein, a facile method for the synthesis of phase‐pure, microsized, two‐dimensional (2D) CuSe nanosheets with an average thickness of approximately 5 nm is demonstrated. These hexagonal‐phased CuSe nanosheets were transformed into cubic‐phased Cu2−xSe nanosheets with the same morphology simply by treatment with heat in the presence of CuI cations. The phase transformation, proposed to be a template‐assisted process, can be extended to other systems, such as CuS and Cu1.97S nanoplates. Our study offers a new method for the phase‐controlled preparation of 2D nanomaterials, which are not readily accessible by conventional wet‐chemical methods.

Abstract:Despite the promising applications of copper selenide nanoparticles, an in-depth elucidation of the inherent properties of tetragonal Cu2Se (beta-Cu2Se) has not been performed because of the lack of a facile synthesis on the nanoscale and an energy-intensive strategy is usually employed. In this work, a facile wet-chemical strategy, employing HCOOH as reducing agent, has been developed to access single-crystalline metastable beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched architectures for the first time. The process avoids hazardous chemistry and high temperatures, and thus opens up a facile approach to the large-scale low-cost preparation of metastable beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched architectures. A possible growth mechanism to explain the formation of the beta-Cu2Se dendritic morphology has been proposed based on time-dependent shape evolution. Further investigations revealed that the metastable beta-Cu2Se can convert into the thermodynamically more stable cubic a-Cu2-xSe maintaining the dendritic morphology. An increase in electrical conductivity and a tunable optical response were observed under ambient conditions. This behavior can be explained by the oxidation of the surface of the beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched structures, ultimately leading to solid-state phase conversion from beta-Cu2Se into superionic conductor a-Cu1.8Se, which has potential applications in energy-related devices and sensors.

Abstract:A precursor to prepare nanocrystalline Cu2−xSe was obtained in the solvothermal reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with elemental selenium at 140°C for 10 h in ethylenediamine (en). Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermal analyses (TGA-DTA), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analyses showed that the precursor could be a complex with the form Cu2−xSe(en)2, which released the ligand ethylenediamine to obtain Cu2−xSe crystals by pyrolysis or protonation. XRD, transition electron spectroscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to investigate the phase, size, morphology, and composition, respectively, of the final product. The analyses indicated that it was a pure nanocrystalline Cu2−xSe with cubic structure.
