Abstract:The article analyzes the evolutionary concept of economic growth of Oded Galor, identifies its strengths and limitations. A comparative analysis of this concept and the Marxist theory of social development is carried out. The comparability of these theoretical constructions is postulated due to the similarity of their main research issues and the distinguished periods of human history that are being analyzed. It is emphasized that the differ-ences between the concepts under consideration consist in the methodological approach to the subject of study, the assessment of social development from different positions and taking into account the action of vari-ous factors. The article concludes that Oded Galor's evolutionary concept of economic growth and the Marxist theory of social development turn out to be complementary theoretical constructs, aggregate accounting of the results of which makes it possible to create a comprehensive view of the economic evolution of human society.

Abstract:This article opens the black box of total factor productivity by decomposing this “all‐in‐one” index into various input‐embedded and input‐free productivities in a new growth accounting framework. The new method identifies different channels through which growth drivers affect economic growth and finds the most effective way to boost the economy, which is unidentified in standard method. This new approach uses a varying coefficient stochastic frontier model, which integrates the standpoints of the endogenous growth theory and the induced innovation theory into a reduced‐form productivity analysis. The new growth accounting is then applied to study the impacts and contributions of R&D investments, international trade, and structural transformation to world agricultural growth during the period of 1962 to 2014. The empirical results provide new evidence to support the endogenous growth theory and the induced innovation theory, indicating the necessity of using the new growth accounting method.

Abstract:Growth accounting breaks down economic growth into components associated with changes in factor inputs and the Solow residual, which reflects technological progress and other elements. After a presentation of the standard model, the analysis considers dual approaches to growth accounting (which considers changes in factor prices rather than quantities), spillover effects and increasing returns, taxes, and multiple types of factor inputs. Later sections place the growth-accounting exercise within the context of two recent strands of endogenous growth theory—varieties-of-products models and quality-ladders models. Within these settings, the Solow residual can be interpreted in terms of measures of the endogenously changing level of technology.

Abstract:We have developed a theoretical model that incorporates trade,firm heterogeneity and quality upgrade into general equilibrium.This theoretical work has developed trade equilibrium models to formalize the role of quality as a determinant of trade patterns.The main objective of the present study is to explore the effect of trade liberalization on the level of quality-ladder as well as the firm heterogeneity.Firstly the level of product quality and the growth of intermediate goods trade are driven by reduction of trade cost from trade liberalization.Secondly this paper generates new insights on the effect of technology spillover and scale economy on the level of quality-ladder as well as the firm heterogeneity.In addition,we also confirm that quality upgrade is capital goods or machine intensive bias in developing country,and which is innovation or technology intensive bias in developed country.

Abstract:This paper constructs a growth model that is consistent with salient features of the recent Chinese growth experience: high output growth, sustained returns on capital investment, extensive reallocation within the manufacturing sector, falling labor share and accumulation of a large foreign surplus. The building blocks of the theory are asymmetric financial imperfections and heterogeneous productivity. Some firms use more productive technologies, but low-productivity firms survive because of better access to credit markets. Due to the financial imperfections, high-productivity firms — which are run by entrepreneurs — must be financed out of internal savings. If these savings are sufficiently large, the high-productivity firms outgrow the low-productivity firms and attract an increasing employment share. The downsizing of the financially integrated firms forces a growing share of domestic savings to be invested in foreign assets, generating a foreign surplus. A calibrated version of the theory can account quantitatively for China’s growth

Abstract:In this paper we extend the work by Ryuzo Sato devoted to the development of economic growth models within the framework of the Lie group theory. We propose a new growth model based on the assumption of logistic growth in factors. It is employed to derive new production functions and introduce a new notion of wage share. In the process it is shown that the new functions compare reasonably well against relevant economic data. The corresponding problem of maximization of profit under conditions of perfect competition is solved with the aid of one of these functions. In addition, it is explained in reasonably rigorous mathematical terms why Bowley's law no longer holds true in post-1960 data.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the quality of economic growth according to the stages of its generation and manifestation. Theoretical framework: The use of quantitative estimation when exploring economic growth can lead to misinterpretation or inaccurate judgments, since the economic reality implies not only quantitative, but also qualitative components. The goal of economic growth, its planning and statement are not an end in themselves, they are aimed to improve the welfare of society. Its implementation implies an improvement in the qualitative facet of economic growth. To date, attempts to assess the quality of economic growth are mostly based on its social outcomes. With such an approach, we miss the formation process of economic growth, focusing only on its effects. Design/methodology/approach: There are developed special indices for both economic growth generation quality and economic growth effects quality, based on macroeconomic and social indicators that play a significant role in the relevant process. These together, as subindices, form an economic growth quality index. The latter is calculated for 76 countries during 2005-2020. The following techniques and indicators are used in the process of the index calculation - normalization, percentiling, optimal lag length selection informational criteria, cointegration tests. Findings: The research empirically confirms that the economic growth quality in the world manifests itself more steadily than it is being formed. Between the leaders and the countries in the last positions in index rankings, the drastic difference mainly lies in their productivity, expenditures on education and lending to the private sector through domestic credit. Research, Practical & Social implications: The nature of the proposed economic growth assessment can serve as a baseline for further research studies in this context. On the other hand, the findings of this study can be used to analize the drivers and barriers to growth in each of the observed country. Originality/value: The approach according to which the economic growth quality index is constructed gives an opportunity to observe economic growth not as a static indicator but as a breathing organism, describing the development process with detailed growth causes and consequences.

Abstract:Economic growth is measured as the rate of relative change in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Yet, when incomes follow random multiplicative growth, the ensemble-average (GDP per capita) growth rate is higher than the time-average growth rate achieved by each individual in the long run. This mathematical fact is the starting point of ergodicity economics. Using the atypically high ensemble-average growth rate as the principal growth measure creates an incomplete picture. Policymaking would be better informed by reporting both ensemble-average and time-average growth rates. We analyse rigorously these growth rates and describe their evolution in the United States and France over the last fifty years. The difference between the two growth rates gives rise to a natural measure of income inequality, equal to the mean logarithmic deviation. Despite being estimated as the average of individual income growth rates, the time-average growth rate is independent of income mobility.

Abstract:The economics of growth centered on technological knowledge in endogenous growth models and the new institutional economics of growth centered on institutions have largely chartered their separate courses so far. In this paper, we construct a new growth model that brings the two economics of growth together by first bringing the quality of the stock of knowledge and the quality of economic institutions into an endogenous growth model and then making the model an evolutionary one via competition and selection of agents with different institutions. Our new model, illustrated with historical data and agent-based modeling (ABM) simulations, nicely accounts for two key stylized facts of economic growth: the coming of the Industrial Revolution and the “Great Divergences” thereafter. Our new model also makes it clear that the most critical factor shaping economic performance across time and space is the (mis-)allocation of production factors by political decisions: Who, under what institutions and power relationship, decides to deploy what knowledge and other production factors to make what. As such, the science of economic growth must be political economy with power/politics rather than neoclassical economics without power/politics.

Abstract:If a country follows the international division of labor in accordance with its initial advantage,it is actually to give up the potential effects in other sectors,and it may be trapped in a comparative advantage trap.Learning effect is the important deciding factors for the increasing returns to scale and the evolution of dynamic advantage.Those countries with national scale advantages will pay more attention to the market scale effects of products and the learning by doing effect when choosing industries,regardless of whether such products have initial advantage or not.The by doing effect can affect a country’s economic growth by influencing the level of human capital.Through trade and opening up,the developing countries can obtain the effect;both the material production sector and the educational sector will produce increased returns to scale at the same time,thus a country’s economic growth can have the possibility of catching up or overtaking the advanced countries,which provides a theoretical foundation for the successful interpretation of the East Asian miracleand the Chinese miracle.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the growing literature on the child quantityquality (QQ) trade-off. During the transition from the traditional agricultural economy to modern economic growth, household real income increases, fertility decreases, and human capital investment per child increases. Motivated by this observation, economists started to develop theoretical models of the child QQ trade-off in the 1970s. Macroeconomic models that theoretically incorporate the QQ trade-off flourish. As a parallel development, empirical studies exploit multiple sources of exogenous variations in family size, such as twin births, child sex composition, and family planning policies, to identify the causal effect of fertility on child quality. Dialogues between theoretical and empirical analyses should empower future research on the child QQ trade-off.

Abstract:In a neoclassical growth framework with a typical political-economy mechanism, this paper reexamines the relationship between the income inequality and economic growth by introducing government spending into the production function and the utility function. It demonstrates that Kuznets’ famous inverted-U shape relationship between inequality and economic growth will hold—the growth rate will be first increasing with the income inequality before the growth rate decreases with inequality.

Abstract:We build a model of firm-level innovation, productivity growth, and reallocation featuring endogenous entry and exit. A new and central economic force is the selection between high- and low-type firms, which differ in terms of their innovative capacity. We estimate the parameters of the model using US Census microdata on firm-level output, R&D, and patenting. The model provides a good fit to the dynamics of firm entry and exit, output, and R&D. Taxing the continued operation of incumbents can lead to sizable gains (of the order of 1.4 percent improvement in welfare) by encouraging exit of less productive firms and freeing up skilled labor to be used for R&D by high-type incumbents. Subsidies to the R&D of incumbents do not achieve this objective because they encourage the survival and expansion of low-type firms. (JEL D21, D24, H25, L52, O31, O34)

Abstract:We use China's growth experience as a laboratory to study how reductions in administrative and regulatory entry barriers contribute to growth. We develop a model of endogenous productivity and market structure with heterogeneous firms and frictional entry and calibrate it to Chinese manufacturing firms. We show that the reduction of entry barriers brings about 1.05 percentage points of productivity growth over the 1990–2004 period, accounting for 18.3% of the productivity growth in the 2004–7 period. A decomposition exercise shows that entry mainly affects growth through promoting a more competitive market structure, which more than offsets the negative Schumpeterian effect.
