Evidence for the working memory dependent research: Tradeoff between mental model theory and probabilistic theory

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To introduce the mental model theory and probabilistic theory with their disputation and tradeoff in conditional inference domain.DATA SOURCES: A computer-based online search of Academic Source Premier database in the foreign journal EBSCOhost database was undertaken to identify the relevant articles published in English between 2000 and 2005 with the Keywords of "mental model, probabilistic theory".STUDY SELECTION: In the first trial, the papers which wholly introduced the mental model theory and probabilistic theory were chosen, especially mentioned their disputation and tradeoff.DATA EXTRACTION: Totally 75 references were collected, and 5 were involved according to the above criteria, and then the obtained references were searched, and 11 relevant ones were collected.DATA SYNTHESIS: Of the 11 papers, 2 particularly introduced the mental model theory and probabilistic theory, 2 introduced their disputation and 1 paper introduced their tradeoff.CONCLUSION: Although the mental model theory and probabilistic theory have their own idea on the cognitive mechanism of conditional inference, however, there were researches between conditional inference and working memory. By means of a verbal report study, it showed that participants with low working memory capacity were more often likely to use probabilistic information, whereas participants with higher working memory capacity were more likely to use counterexample information.In other word, it is a tradeoff between mental model theory and probabilistic theory.
