Abstract:It has been demonstrated that organic semiconductor micro-/nanocrystals with multicolor emission/waveguide characterizations would be widely utilized as ideal building blocks for the next generation of miniaturized optical, electronic and logic operation devices. However, rational synthesis of one dimensional micro-/nanocrystals with multicolor emission and optical waveguide performances are highly desirable and still remain a challenge. Here, the DCM doped Alq3 single-crystalline microrods are fabricated via a facile solution-exchange method. It is found that a redshift in light-emission frequency is extremely sensitive to the doping concentration of 4-(dicyano-methylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylamino-styryl)-4Hpyran (DCM) guest molecule. The green emission at 527 nm of Alq3 is the main emitting peak when doping concentration of DCM in Alq3:DCM is less than 150:1. Then, when the doping concentration of DCM in Alq3:DCM is larger than 100:2 such as 100:10, the red emission at 635 nm becomes the dominant emitting peak, the redshift amounts can reach to roughly 108 nm. In addition, the DCM-doped Alq3 microrods exhibit a lower optical loss of 0.019 dB/μm as a multicolored waveguide material. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the DCM-doped organic micro/nano crystals can be utilized as a promising building block for various optoelectronic components.

Abstract:AlGaN nanorods have attracted increasing amounts of attention for use in ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronic devices. Here, self-assembled AlGaN nanorods with embedding quantum disks (Qdisks) were grown on Si(111) using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE). The morphology and quantum construction of the nanorods were investigated and well-oriented and nearly defect-free nanorods were shown to have a high density of about 2 × 1010 cm−2. By controlling the substrate temperature and Al/Ga ratio, the emission wavelengths of the nanorods could be adjusted from 276 nm to 330 nm. By optimizing the structures and growth parameters of the Qdisks, a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the AlGaN Qdisk nanorods of up to 77% was obtained at 305 nm, which also exhibited a shift in the small emission wavelength peak with respect to the increasing temperatures during the PL measurements.

Abstract:Surface-bound nanowires of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) have been fabricated by an adsorbent-assisted physical vapor deposition method and investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The as-deposited Alq3 nanowires are the single crystals, which are monodispersed. Moreover, the cathode luminescence spectrum of Alq3 nanowires exhibits a strong fluorescence emission at 497 nm. The conductive atomic force microscopy images reveal that the current flow along the physically contacted probe increases monotonically with the bias voltage above a critical value of 3.0 V. The point current can reach up to 500 pA when the bias voltage is set at 5 V. The results imply that the surface-bound Alq3 nanowires are of potential in organic photonic and electronic applications.

Abstract:Well-defined Alq(3) nanoflowers were fabricated via a facile and fast sonochemical route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the structure and shape of the as-prepared product. The results showed that the resulting Alq(3) was composed of nanobelts with thickness about 50 nm, average widths of 200 nm, and length up to 10 μm. The Alq(3) nanoflowers exhibited good electrogenerated chemiluminescence behavior.

Abstract:Highly ordered AlxGa1-xN nanorods with varied aluminum alloy compositions (0.18 <= x <= 0.8) are fabricated with nanoimprint lithography and top-down dry etching techniques. And the structural properties and morphology are obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Compared with as-grown AlGaN samples, nanorod samples reveal outstanding optical performance on account of strain releasing and light extraction enhancement. Through Raman scattering and cathodeluminescence measurements, it has been observed clear redshifts of E(2)h modes and near band edge emission (NBE) peaks of AlGaN nanorods compared to the planar ones, indicating the residual strain releasing after nano-fabrication. The integrated intensities of NBE peaks of AlGaN nanorods manifest light emission enhancement up to 2.7 at deep-UV range. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations have been adopted to investigate the light extraction and far-field distribution of such structures, it turned out that ordered nanorod array can enhance the TM polarized emission extraction 2-7 folds compared to the planar structure. The optical regulation in nanorod arrays should take the responsibility for the observed optical enhancements, which is proved by the far-field distribution of light, thus it can improve the performance of ultraviolet LEDs.

Abstract:A variety of nearly monodisperse semiconductor nanocrystals, such as US, ZnS, and ZnS:Mn, with controllable aspect ratios have been successfully prepared through a facile synthetic process. These as-prepared nanocrystals were obtained from the reactions between metal ions and thioacetamide by employing octadecylamine or oleylamine as the surfactants. The effects of reaction temperature and time, ratios of thioacetamide to inorganic precursors, and the reactant content on the size and crystal purity of the nanorods, have been systematically investigated. The optical properties and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been discussed. For the next biolabel applications, these hydrophobic nanocrystals have also been transferred into hydrophilic colloidal spheres by means of an emulsion-based bottom-up self-assembly approach.

Abstract:Aluminium tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3) is a popular coordination complex extensively used in organic luminescent devices as the emissive layer. Metal doping in Alq3 and its nanoscale synthesis are two strategies which are widely adopted to enhance the functional properties of Alq3. In the present work, Cadmium (Cd) doped Alq3 films having 1-dimensional morphology have been successfully synthesised using thermal vapor transport method. These films have been subjected to different analytical studies to study their functional properties. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images reveal the dendritic nature of Cd-doped Alq3 nanowires while Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDAX) analysis confirms the presence of Cd in Cd-doped Alq3 nanowires. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) study reveals the polycrystalline nature of Cd-doped Alq3 nanowires. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of Cd-doped Alq3 nanowire samples indicates the replacement of some Al atoms with Cd atoms in Alq3 matrix. UV–visible spectroscopy study of the Cd-doped Alq3 nanowires shows enhancement in the optical absorbance with increasing Cd concentration while Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analysis shows a 7-fold enhancement in PL intensity for 0.5 mol% Cd-doping. This rapid enhancement in the PL is explained on the basis of electronic charge transfer from Cd ions to Alq3 molecules.

Abstract:The NIR-luminescent ErQ(3) nano-/microstructures have been successfully synthesized through it simple microemulsion route. Various morphologies, including nanorods. bundles, and urchins, have been achieved by tuning the fundamental experimental parameters, such as the organic solvents and the concentration of cetyltrimethylommonium bromide (LIAR). The results from SEM images indicate that a solvent with lower polar and higher boiling-point would result in nanorods, while higher concentrations of CTAB and solvents with higher polar and lower boiling-point would prefer the formation of bundles or urchins. The molecular formula of the products being ErQ(3) can be deduced by the elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and can be further confirmed by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectra (Ell R). A self-assembly growth mechanism has been proposed to explain our system based on the obtained results. Following excitation of the absorption of the ligand, all the ErQ(3) nano-/microstructures show characteristic emissions centered at 1534 nm due to the typical I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition oldie Er3+ ion. In addition, the luminescence properties of the as-obtained samples are dependent on the morphologies and sizes of the ErQ(3) nano-/microstructures, which is a higher dimensionality, leading to stronger luminescence intensity.

Abstract:Quasi-ordered semi-polar (1122) plane AlGaN multiple-quantum-well (MQW) nanorod (NR) arrays with a period of 400 nm were successfully fabricated by a self-assembly technique using polystyrene spheres. The diameter and height of the NRs were about 360 and 600 nm, respectively. The photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelengths of both NR and planar MQWs were located at 266 nm at room temperature, demonstrating that the quantum-confined Stark effect was negligible in the semi-polar AlGaN MQWs. The PL integral intensity of the MQW NR arrays was enhanced by 1.5 times compared to that of planar MQWs. Moreover, the degree of polarization was increased from 15.9% to 26.2% when fabricating the NR arrays, demonstrating enhanced polarized emission. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to explain the enhancement of PL intensity, which was mainly due to the modified light extraction by the quasi-ordered NR arrays. Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile solution-based route for the synthesis of bis-(8-hydroxyquinoline) cadmium (CdQ(2)) complex nanorods and nanoflowers (bundles of nanorods) in an oleic acid-sodium oleate-ethanol-hexane (or not)-H2O system at 55-100 degrees C. Field emission-scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images indicated that a longer time and a higher temperature would result in nanoflowers, while higer concentrations of the reactants and the surfactant with a lower temperature and a shorter reaction time would be appropriate for the formation of nanorods. Also, the hexane could sabotage the anisotropic crystal growth of the complex, leading to shorter nanorods. The C, H, and N element analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) jointly determined the molecular formula of the products, and the Fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) was utilized to further confirm that the samples were made up of CdQ(2). All the samples possessed excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties. This facile methodology could be extended for the controlled large-scale synthesis of nanostructures of other functional complexes, and the obtained CdQ(2) nanorods could be introduced as the building blocks for novel optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Seeded semiconductor nanorods represent a unique family of quantum confined materials that manifest characteristics of mixed dimensionality. They show polarized emission with high quantum yield and fluorescence switching under an electric field, features that are desirable for use in display technologies and other optical applications. So far, their robust synthesis has been limited mainly to CdSe/CdS heterostructures, thereby constraining the spectral tunability to the red region of the visible spectrum. Herein we present a novel synthesis of CdSe/Cd1-xZnxS seeded nanorods with a radially graded composition that show bright and highly polarized green emission with minimal intermittency, as confirmed by ensemble and single nanorods optical measurements. Atomistic pseudopotential simulations elucidate the importance of the Zn atoms within the nanorod structure, in particular the effect of the graded composition. Thus, the controlled addition of Zn influences and improves the nanorods' optoelectronic performance by providing an additional handle to manipulate the degree confinement beyond the common size control approach. These nanorods may be utilized in applications that require the generation of a full, rich spectrum such as energy-efficient displays and lighting.

Abstract:Products consisted of Al-doped ZnO nanodisks and ZnO nanorod clusters were synthesized by chemical co-deposition process. The nanodisks with large polar surface are about 1–2 µm in diameter and 20 nm in thickness. The ZnO nanorods have an average diameter of 40 nm. The content of ZnO nanodisks can be adjusted by Al3+ content. The growth mechanism of the ZnO nanodisks is also discussed. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements show that photoluminescence peaks of the products decrease with the increase of Al content.
AlxGa1-xN -Gan Core-Shell Nanorods: Synthesis and Field Emission Properties

Abstract:Quasi-aligned AlxGa1-xN-GaN core-shell nanorods have been synthesized on Si (100) substrate by a one-step and catalyst-free chemical vapor deposition method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and cathodoluminescence analyses reveal that the core/shell nanorods consist of AlxGa1-xN core and GaN shell. Field-emission measurements show that the AlxGa1-xN-GaN core-shell nanorod arrays present a turn-on field of similar to 3.6 V/mu m, threshold field of similar to 4.8 V/mu m, and a field-enhancement factor of similar to 1197, which is much better than most AlN or GaN nanostructures. The excellent field-emission characteristics are originated from the low electron affinity of AlxGa1-xN and narrow band gap of GaN, resulting in good electron transport from AlxGa1-xN to GaN as evident from the band diagram of the core-shell material. Such AlxGa1-xN-GaN core-shell nanorods are envisaged to be one of decent candidates for advanced electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices.

Abstract:Highly uniform CdSe nanorods are synthesized by using a secondary phosphine. Based on these high‐quality nanorod seeds, rod‐in‐rod CdSe/CdxZn1−xS/ZnS nanorods with narrow emission bandwidth, high photoluminescence quantum yield and high linear polarization are synthesized. Using the confined assembly method, these nanorods are assembled into long‐range‐ordered microarrays with programmable patterns and display highly polarized emission. The seeded growth method offers an efficient way to design core–shell semiconductor nanocrystals in the liquid phase. The combination of seed and shell materials offers wide tunability of morphologies and photophysical properties. Also, semiconductor nanorods (NRs) exhibit unique polarized luminescence which can potentially break the theoretical limit of external quantum efficiency in light emitting diodes based on spherical quantum dots. Although rod‐in‐rod core–shell NRs present higher degree of polarization, most studies have focused on dot‐in‐rod core–shell NRs due to the difficulties in achieving uniform NR seeds. Here, this study prepares high‐quality uniform CdSe NRs by improving the reactivity of the Se source, using a secondary phosphine, namely diphenylphosphine, to dissolve the Se power, along with the conventional tertiary phosphine, namely trioctylphosphine. Starting from these high‐quality NR seeds, this study synthesizes CdSe/CdxZn1−xS/ZnS core–shell NRs with narrow emission bandwidth (29 nm at 620 nm), high PLQY (89%) and high linear polarization (p = 0.90). This study then assembles these core–shell NRs using the confined assembly method and fabricates long‐range‐ordered microarrays with programmable patterns and displaying highly polarized emission (p = 0.80). This study highlights the great potential of NRs for application in liquid crystal displays and full‐color light emitting diodes displays.

Abstract:In2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ nanorod flowers (NRFs) are prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, where sucrose was used as a ligand. The obtained In2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ NRFs were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), power X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and steady/transient spectroscopy. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence (UCL) of In2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ NRFs on morphology, Yb3+ concentration and excitation power was carefully discussed. It is found that the luminescence intensity ratio of the red emission to green emission (R/G) depended on the morphology and Yb3+ concentration, and the green emissions are dominantly resulting from a three-photon populating process with higher Yb3+ doping concentration. More importantly, the concentration quenching in the In2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ NRFs was greatly suppressed due to boundary effects, and is beneficial for lighting and photon energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Hexagonal AlN nanorod and nanoneedle arrays were synthesized through the direct reaction of AlCl3 and NH3 by chemical vapor deposition at about 750 degrees C. Both the AlN nanoneedle and nanorod samples were of wurtzite structure and grew preferentially along the c-axis. With an increase in the ratio of NH3 to Ar, an evolution from nanorods to nanoneedles was observed. A growth model was proposed to explain the possible growth mechanism. Measurements in field emission show that AlN nanoneedle arrays have a much lower turn-on field (3.1 V mu m(-1)) compared to nanorod arrays (15.3 V mu m(-1)), due to their large curvature geometry. The AlN nanoneedle arrays have potential applications in many fields, such as electron-emitting nanodevices and field-emission-based flat-panel displays.
