Abstract:The mainstream ideological literature is one literary representation of the State's orthodox ideology. Its political legitimacy″ and the cultural andnational conditions in which it functions secure it the ″central″ position in the socio cultural system of contemporary China. Prior to the 1980s,it had been the only nationwide form of literature in that period under the influence of the powerful political trend of thoughts. Yet after the 1980s,with the transformation of social culture and the adjustment of policy on art and literature,the mainstream ideological literature,having undergone its three stage development and the self restoration,has encountered a much more complicated and awkward situation. All these phenomena were closely related to the intermediary system that existed in the then system in China. This intermediary system,formed by such organizations as the Chinese Writers Association and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and by those who played a dual role (as both a government leader and a literary critic) like Zhou Yang (responsible for publicity,culture,and art and literature in China),etc. functioned twice successfully for the proper coordination and mutual understanding between the mainstream ideology and the individual writing of writers. In the then market oriented economy,however,the system met unprecedented rigorous challenges,breaking the internal system into two schools known as the ″restoration type″ and ″the correction type″ respectively. Even so,both schools were faithful to Marxism,and their difference of opinion was academic,reflecting different schools of thought,which belong to the internal contradictions within the socialist culture. All this tells us that with the loosing of the old system,the mainstream ideology and the intermediary system have posed a question of how to remodel themselves in accordance with the new political parameters.
