Abstract:In order to obtain oriented nano/micro-structured materials via a simple method for potential nanoelectronic/microelectronic applications, a study on preparation of oriented ZnO structures under hydrothermal reaction condition was carried out. The deposition film was characterized with scanning electron micrographs (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The experimental results under the optimized reaction condition indicated that a ZnO nanotube array on a glass substrate can be directly formed via a one-step approach in ammonia aqueous solution. The XRD results showed the highly preferential growth of the ZnO nanotubes along the c-axis orientiation. The PL results showed the strong photoluminescence property of the ZnO nanotube array in a wide light range (387–416nm). The possible mechanism to form the ZnO nanotube array via such a simple in-situ deposition approach was discussed. This template-less, surfactant-free and seed-free aqueous synthesis method makes it possible to synthesize large-scale, low-cost and well-oriented ZnO nano/microtube film at moderate temperature.

Abstract:In this paper,a template free method has been employed to fabricate porous ZnO.Rod shaped precursor is first synthesized by a mild hydrothermal process.Accompanied with the decomposition of the precursor during the subsequent annealing treatment,porous ZnO with the inherited morphology of the precursor is obtained.The as-prepared products are characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis(TG-DTA).It exhibits that the porous hierarchical frame consists of nanopartiles with wurtzite-type.The size of the pores as well as the nanoparticles varies with the heating rate during the annealing process.Photoluminescence(PL) spectra of the porous ZnO shows a red-shift band edge exciton transitions due to the oxygen defects.

Abstract:An aqueous solution method has been presented for synthesizing ZnO nanorod arrays with controllable diameter and lengths on different substrates. Thermal decomposition deposition was first used to grow a thin layer of ZnO nanocrystals on substrate serving as seeds for the subsequent growth of the nanorod arrays. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the high orientation of the ZnO nanorods. The effect of different substrates and the annealing temperature of the ZnO seeds on the morphology of the as-grown ZnO arrays were investigated. The diameter and the length of the nanorods can be controlled by the reaction times and reaction temperature. These highly oriented nanorod arrays are potential for the creation of functional materials, such as the electrode of the solar cells, photonic devices. etc.

Abstract:High-density well-aligned ZnO nanorod array was successfully synthesized on a PLD prepared undoped ZnO film by a catalyst-free method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy show that the nanorods are well-oriented perpendicular to the substrate. The photoluminescence from free excitons and Raman spectra of the ZnO nanorods reflect the high purity and nearly defect free structure of nanorods. The well-aligned feature of the nanorod array is attributed to the nanorods’ epitaxial growth from the ZnO film.

Abstract:We report a soft and template-free electrochemical deposition method for preparing wafer-scale ZnO nanoneedle arrays on an oriented gold film coated silicon substrate. It has been shown that the ZnO nanoneedles possess single-crystal wurtzite structure and grow along the c-axis perpendicularly on the substrate. Raman and resonant Raman scattering studies have confirmed that the ZnO nanoneedles are of good crystal quality. The room temperature photoluminescence spectrum of such ZnO nanoneedle arrays exhibits a strong ultraviolet emission but negligible visible emission. The time-resolved photoluminescence spectral analysis discloses the excitonic origin of the ultraviolet emission. The field electron emission study, showing notable emission current in a moderate turn-on field, demonstrates potential applications of such ZnO nanoneedle arrays in field emission display, devices. The formation of such a ZnO nanoneedle array is attributed to the formation of { 0001}-oriented ZnO nuclei on the oriented gold coated silicon substrate and preferential growth along < 0001 >.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays were fabricated on ZnO:Al seeded Si substrates with various reaction temperatures using a low temperature hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of ZnO nanorod arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It reveals that the ZnO nanorods grow vertically on Si surface with (002) preferential orientation. The transmittance spectra show the ZnO nanorod arrays fabricated at low temperatures have high transmittance in the visible region and decrease with reaction temperature increasing. Moreover, the same trend was also observed in the reflectance spectra of the ZnO nanorod arrays. The optimal reaction temperature is of 120 degrees C for ZnO nanorod arrays with high transmittance (similar to 80%) and low reflectance (similar to 10%) in the visible region. The superior optical properties make ZnO nanorod arrays promising for applications as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:A new simple low-temperature hydrothermal process without addition of any surfactant or complexing agent was put forward to synthesize uniform ZnO nanorods, in which hydrazine hydrate instead of NaOH was used as mineralizer. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to characterize the product, the results of which reveal that uniform ZnO nanorods approximately 70 nm in width and 2 μm in length were formed at 150°C within 8 h. Prior to the hydrothermal process hydrazine hydrate reacted with ZnCl2 solution to form a complex, and the complex slowly decomposed in the hydrothermal process. All these characteristics were favorable to this additive-free hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:A simple aqueous solution route has been successfully employed to prepare large-scale arrays of ZnO nanorods on the zinc foil without the assistance of any template, oxidant or coating of metal oxide layers. It is found that the growth of ZnO nanorod arrays with different densities, diameters and morphologies is dependent on the ammonia concentration and zinc precursor. The different morphologies of the ZnO nanostructures attained with or without adding Zn2+-contained salt in the alkaline solution are compared in the paper. The possible growth mechanism concerning the growth of the different ZnO nanocrystal morphologies is also discussed.

Abstract:Wurtzite ZnO nanorod exhibits many unique properties, which make it promising for various optoelectronic applications. To grow well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays on various substrates, a seed layer is usually required to improve the density and vertical alignment. The reported works about seedless hydrothermal synthesis either require special substrates, or require external electrical field to enhance the ZnO nucleation. Here, we report a general method for the one-pot synthesis of homogenous and well-aligned ZnO nanorods on common conducting substrates without a seed layer. This method, based on the galvanic-cell structure, makes use of the contact potential between different materials as the driving force for ZnO growth. It is applicable to different conducting substrates at low temperature. More importantly, the as-grown ZnO nanorods show enhanced photoelectric response. This unique large scale low-temperature processing method could be of great importance for the application of ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ZnO nanowall networks were grown on ZnO-coated silicon by thermal evaporation at low temperature without catalysts or additives. All of the results from scanning electronic spectroscope, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering confirmed that the ZnO nanowalls were vertically aligned and c-axis oriented. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectra showed a dominated UV peak at 378nm, and a much suppressed orange emission centered at ∼590nm. This demonstrates fairly good crystal quality and optical properties of the product. A possible three-step, zinc vapor-controlled process was proposed to explain the growth of well-aligned ZnO nanowall networks. The pre-coated ZnO template layer plays a key role during the synthesis process, which guides the growth direction of the synthesized products.

Abstract:The well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays were fabricated through a simple chemical process under low temperature. The nanorod arrays were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM and SAED, and their optical performances were investigated with Raman and PL spectroscopy. The results show that the as-prepared ZnO nanorod arrays are dense, the individual ZnO nanorod is hexagonal shape and grows along c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface with good single crystal in nature. The Raman property of nanorod arrays displays change with the altering the preparation conditions. Moreover, the PL performances of ZnO nanorod arrays exhibit tunable character with adjusting the synthesis conditions.

Abstract:A novel approach for synthesizing ZnO nanowire film is reported. The film is produced by immersing a nanocrystalline zinc electrodeposit in a NaCl solution at room temperature without template required. The ZnO nanowire film has an average wire diameter of 40 nm, which shows strong light absorption capability and high optoelectronic activity under UV illumination. This is a simple low-cost approach with the promise for large-scale production of ZnO nanowire films. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:High-density well-aligned ZnO nanorod array was successfully synthesized on a large-area magnetron sputtering deposited Al doped ZnO film-coated Si (AZO/Si) substrate via a convenient solution method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy show that the nanorods are well-oriented perpendicular to the substrate. The influences of the reaction temperature, time, on the size and shapes of the as-prepared ZnO nanorods (ZNs) samples have been studied. The length and diameter of the nanorods became bigger when a longer reaction time was used. When the temperature is elevated to 130 degrees C, a new conical ZNs was synthesized. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of all the ZnO products showed a strong ultraviolet (UV) emission. The photoluminescence from free excitons of the ZNs synthesized at higher temperature reflects the high purity and nearly defect free structure of nanorods. The well-aligned feature of the nanorod array is attributed to the nanorods' epitaxial growth from the AZO films.

Abstract:A novel approach to the rational fabrication of smart and functional metal oxide particulate thin films and coatings is demonstrated on the growth of ZnO nanowires and oriented nanorod arrays. The synthesis involves a template‐less and surfactant‐free aqueous method, which enables the generation of, at large‐scale, low‐cost, and moderate temperatures, advanced metal oxide thin films with controlled complexity. The strategy consists of monitoring of the nucleation, growth, and aging processes by means of chemical and electrostatic control of the interfacial free energy. It enables the control of the size of nano‐, meso‐, and microcrystallites, their surface morphology, orientations onto various substrates, and crystal structure. Strict control of precipitation and dispersion conditions makes it possible to generate well‐defined and well‐oriented ZnO nanoparticles (see Figure) of variable size and shape on various substrates. No template, membrane, organic surfactant, or applied external field is required, and consequently, the design of thin films with complex architecture over a large area is cleaner, faster, and less expensive.

Abstract:Aligned high-density ZnO nanorods were successfully synthesized on porous aluminum oxide (PAO) template. The growth process involves carbonthermal reduction of ZnO as a Zn vapor source and ZnO nucleation on the PAO template without metal catalysts. Field-emission scanning electron microscope images revealed that the nanorods have uniform length distributions and hexagon end planes, and the intense c-axis growth was also confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Strong ultraviolet emission at 380 nm and weak green band emission at 520 nm at room-temperature photoluminescence clearly indicated the high quality of the ZnO nanorods. A growth mechanism is proposed that the multipore surface of the PAO template plays a critical role in the nucleation of ZnO in the initial stage of growth, and nanorods grow from the nuclei due to intense ZnO c-axis orientation growth.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod arrays with perfect order and uniformity were prepared using a simple, low-cost, commonly available and scalable nanosphere lithography for patterning gold catalyst particles and a successive bottom-up growth technique in a tube furnace chemical vapor deposition system. Each rod in the arrays had perfect surface facets, sharp edges and uniform size. For all of the rods, their sides were oriented the same. This bottom-up assembly method may accelerate the use of ZnO nanorods in real device applications.

Abstract:We report an effective approach for the growth of vertically aligned one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures on various substrates (ceramic, silicon, quartz glass and metal) in mild solutions (T = 95 degrees C) without any seeds or catalysts. With the measurements of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and TEM, the novel growth mechanism of the ZnO nanorod arrays has been discussed in detail. The results show that the key of the ZnO direct growth on the demanded substrate is the introduction of glucose into the Zn2+-contained solution, which functionalizes the substrate, leading to the ZnO heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate surface. Particularly noteworthy is that the obtained ZnO is coated with carbonaceous species layer; this layer can be carbonized at high temperature in nitrogen to form core shell composite structures, or removed by oxidation according to different application requirements. Furthermore, it is found that carbon-coated ZnO composite nanostructure shows superior UV excitonic emissions over the pristine ZnO. We believe that our approach presents a general economical route toward mass production of controllable ZnO-based arrays and will facilitate flexible design of device architectures for nanoelectronics.
Low-Temperature Synthesis and Optical Property of ZnO Nanorod Arrays

Abstract:Well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with 100-200nm diameter and about 1 mu m length were vertically grown on quartz substrate at relatively low temperature by a solution deposition method. The effects of reactant ratio, water-bath temperature, growth time on crystal structure were discussed. Microstructure of the arrays was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), optical properties were examined using fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results show that a Zn/C6H12N4 molar ratio of 1:1, bath temprature 70 degrees C, growth time of 24h are the optimal condition for the preparation of densely distributed ZnO arrays. XRD and FE-SEM analysis confirmed that the ZnO nanorod is a single crystal with a wurtzite structure and the photoluminescence (PL) spectra exhibit coexistence properties of ultraviolet (UV), blue and green emissions.

Abstract:Large-scale arrayed ZnO crystals with a series of novel morphologies, including tower-like, flower-like, and tube-like samples, have been successfully fabricated by a simple aqueous solution route. The morphology and orientation of the obtained ZnO crystal arrays can be conveniently tailored by changing the reactants and experimental conditions. For example, the tower-like ZnO crystal arrays were obtained in a reaction solution system including zinc salt, ammonia, ammonium salt, and thiourea, and the orientation of these tower-like crystals could be controlled by the contents of these reactants. Flower-like ZnO arrays were obtained at lower temperatures, and tube-like ZnO arrays were obtained by ultrasonic pretreatment of the reaction system. The growth mechanism of the tower-like and tube-like ZnO crystals was investigated by FESEM. The results show that tower-like crystals grow layer by layer, while tube-like crystals grow from active nanowires. Ultrasonic pretreatment is proved to be effective in promoting the formation of active nuclei, which have important effects on the formation of the tube-like ZnO crystals. In addition, large-scale arrays of these ZnO crystals can be successfully synthesized onto various substrates such as amorphous glass, crystalline quartz, and PET. This implies this chemical method has a wide application in the fabrication of nano-/microscale devices.

Abstract:Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation reveals that array-orderly novel nanostructures, which are nanorods with many nanoparticles on the surfaces, have been synthesized at low temperature (162 °C) via a one-step in-situ process in solution. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), coupled with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), reveal that the as-obtained products possess crystalline structure of N-doped ZnO. The room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum has also been examined to explore the optical property. The present synthesis method possesses several advantages, which would be significant to be studied deeper in the future. It is also envisioned that this method could provide a new approach to synthesize ZnO:N and other ZnO-based adulterants at low temperature.
