Abstract:The modeling of stator and rotor faults is the basis of the development of online monitoring techniques. To obtain reliable stator and rotor fault models, this paper focuses on dynamic modeling of the stator and rotor faults in real-time, which adopts a multiple-coupled-circuit method by using a winding function approach for inductance calculation. Firstly, the model of the induction machine with a healthy cage is introduced, where a rotor mesh that consists of a few rotor loops and an end ring loop is considered. Then, the stator inter-turn fault model is presented by adding an extra branch with short circuit resistance on the fault part of a stator phase winding. The broken rotor bar fault is then detailed by merging and removing the broken-bar-related loops. Finally, the discrete models under healthy and faulty conditions are developed by using the Tustin transformation for digital implementation. Moreover, the stator and rotor mutual inductances are derived as a function of the rotor position according to the turn and winding functions distribution. Simulations and experiments are performed on a 2.2-kW/380-V/50-Hz three-phase and four-pole induction motor to show the performance of the stator and rotor faults, where the saturation effect is considered in simulations by exploiting the measurements of a no load test. The simulation results are in close agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, magnitudes of the characteristic frequencies of 2f1 in torque and (1 ± 2s)f1 in current are analyzed to evaluate the stator and rotor fault severity. Both indicate that the stator fault severity is related to the short circuit resistance. Further, the number of shorted turns and the number of continuous broken bars determines the rotor fault severity.

Abstract:Electric motors have revolutionized the way of human living and resulted in the modern lifestyle. These motors often operate in corrosive and dusty places and are exposed to a variety of undesirable conditions and situations that result in the failure of the motor. The faults occurring in Induction Motors (IM) need to be detected at a proper time for avoiding losses and further consequences. A well-designed fault detection scheme not only reduces motor failure but also increases productivity and even sometimes avoids accidents. This paper presents a review of fault detection and classification techniques in three-phase induction motors (TPIM). The main theme of this paper is to revisit the conventional methods for fault detection in TPIM and compare them with recently published methods based on parameters to be sensed, and the type of fault that can be detected, with their advantages and drawbacks. Around a hundred papers are critically reviewed and studied from old and new regimes. Attention is also given to fault detection methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This paper concludes with brief remarks which will be very useful for new researchers who are willing to research in the domain of fault detection and classification.
A review and comparison of fault detection and diagnosis methods for squirrel-cage induction motors: State of the art

Abstract:Preventing induction motors (IMs) from failure and shutdown is important to maintain functionality of many critical loads in industry and commerce. This paper provides a comprehensive review of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) methods targeting all the four major types of faults in IMs. Popular FDD methods published up to 2010 are briefly introduced, while the focus of the review is laid on the state-of-the-art FDD techniques after 2010, i.e. in 2011-2015 and some in 2016. Different FDD methods are introduced and classified into four categories depending on their application domains, instead of on fault types like in many other reviews, to better reveal hidden connections and similarities of different FDD methods. Detailed comparisons of the reviewed papers after 2010 are given in tables for fast referring. Finally, a dedicated discussion session is provided, which presents recent developments, trends and remaining difficulties regarding to FDD of IMs, to inspire novel research ideas and new research possibilities.

Abstract:Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults are the most common fault types of brushless DC (BLDC) motors used in industry. Fault diagnosis of BLDC motors is of critical importance due to their wide spread applications. Existing diagnosis methods are based on voltage and current analysis which is useful but difficult to identify early faults and fault locations, as these suffer from external disturbances. This article proposes a new offline method for fault detection based on magnetic leakage flux (MLF) and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) for improving the level of fault diagnosis. The ITSC and MLF are modeled and analyzed theoretically. Then they are verified by finite element analysis (FEM) and experimental tests. Hall sensors are used to form an array to collect MLF signals at different positions outside the test motor. The frequency-domain characteristic matrix of MLF signals is analyzed by BPNN models. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect ITSCs, and estimate the fault degree and the location of the fault. The method is a promising technology as it is non-intrusive and accurate.

Abstract:Reliability is a very important target of linear induction motors. In this paper, the reliability model of the motor is established, the reliability indexes are defined, the faults’ modes are analyzed and classified according to their effect and damage, the sequential sampling plan is discussed and its acceptable fault rate (ACFR) and refusable fault rate (REFR) are presented, and then, the detailed reliability compliance field test method is introduced with one case. With the method, engineers can verify the reliability of linear induction motors expediently.

Abstract:This paper concerns following two issues that are critical to the reliable diagnosis of rotor faults of induction motors. The first is to define a fault severity index that is independent of load level and mechanical inertia; and the second is how to discriminate between rotor faults and periodic load fluctuation. Based on the detailed analysis of the relationships between current sideband components at frequencies (1±2s)fs (s is slip and fs is supply frequency) due to rotor faults or load fluctuation, a new fault severity index that is independent of load level and mechanical inertia is given, and then a method to reliably discriminate between rotor faults and load fluctuation is presented. Experimental results from a 4 kW induction motor demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:As induction motor is one of the most preponderant driving equipment in modern industrial systems, timely detection and maintenance of motor failures can efficaciously circumvent economic losses and catastrophic accidents. Though vast majority of machinery fault diagnosis approaches are based on vibration analysis, there may be circumstances that it is impossible to install vibratory sensors in some sophisticated equipment or harsh environments. In view of this, a fault diagnosis method for induction motor based on multiscale acoustic entropy feature selection and hierarchical adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (HANFIS) with localized recurrent input is presented in this article. First, multiscale entropy features, which can reflect the health state of the running motor, are extracted from the collected acoustic signals. Subsequently, to avoid the dimensionality disaster problem and remove irrelevant features, the Relief-F algorithm is used for feature selection. Next, based on the fuzzy formalisms, a newly designed HANFIS is utilized for motor fault identification, where the localized recurrent input mechanism allows for injecting important features again into the model to prevent it from forgetting significant discriminative information, to further promote the overall diagnostic accuracy. Finally, experiments on two acoustic datasets of induction motor and comparisons with existing approaches sufficiently verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:BackgroundAn induction motor is at the heart of every rotating machine and hence it is a very vital component. Almost in every industry, around 90% of the machines apply an induction motor as a prime mover. It is a very important driving unit of the machine. Hence, it is necessary to monitor its condition to avoid any catastrophic failure and stoppage of production. The breakdown of the induction motor would not be affordable due to remarkable financial loss, unpredicted shutdown, and the associated repair cost.PurposeVibration is a manifestation of induction motor due to the issues in alignment, balancing, and clearances. Bearing, the most vulnerable to failure due to continuous working under fatigue loading leads to defects. These defects cause changes in the vibration signature over time. The vibration monitoring techniques helps to effectively diagnose mechanical faults such as bearing defect and stator rotor rub. The purpose of this review paper is to summarize the major faults in induction motor, recent diagnostics methods augmented with advanced signal processing techniques, and real-life applications in electric vehicles. It also discusses possible research gaps and opportunities to contribute based on the review findings in the field of condition monitoring.MethodsThis article presents a detailed review of recent trends in the research of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of the induction motor. The emphasis is given on the major faults in the induction motor covering time-domain, frequency-domain, and time–frequency domain methods along with an application of artificial intelligence techniques for fault detection.Review FactorThis article presents a comprehensive review of literature which highlights the development and new propositions by researchers in the field of diagnostic techniques for the different faults of induction motor in the last decade. Researchers documented applications of the different conventional methods, advanced signal processing techniques, and soft computing techniques for fault identification of induction motor. This review is carried out for fault identification of induction motor used in machines in general and in particular for identifying the faults in an induction motor of an electric vehicle. A dedicated discussion on the review findings, research gaps, future trends in the field of condition monitoring of induction motor is presented. Condition monitoring of the induction motor in an electric vehicle is also discussed in this paper.ConclusionsIt is observed that the vibration-based techniques are reported to be effective for the identification of mechanical faults while motor current signature analysis is effective for electrical fault in an induction motor. The review presented to analyze the suitability of various condition monitoring techniques for the induction motor fault identification in general and particularly its application in an electric vehicle. It is observed that the diagnosis of faults at the incipient level without using the signal processing technique is challenging. Fault diagnosis of induction motor has witnessed the changes from traditional diagnosis techniques to advanced techniques with a hybrid application of signal processing and artificial intelligence techniques. Still, there is a potential of improvement in reliability, efficiency, robustness, computational time, and real-time diagnostics of faults in IM.

Abstract:A diagnostic method of induction motor stator winding interturn short circuit fault based on the feature impedance is proposed in this paper. The fundamental positive and negative sequence components of the voltage and current are separated effectively by the improved multiple reference frames theory and Hilbert transform, then the impedance matrix of the motor is calculated. Taking the fluctuation of the load, supply unbalance and the inherent asymmetry of the motor into account, the feature impedance Znp in the impedance matrix is selected as the stator winding interturn short circuit fault character, for its sensitivity and reliability. A series of experiments on a 4kW induction motor give the relationship between the amplitude of the feature impedance and the short circuit fault. Corresponding to the different input power, the fault diagnosis threshold and fault severity factor are set up. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method

Abstract:In an induction motor with broken rotor bars, stator currents contain fault-related components. The fault information propagates to voltages when the motor is in a closed-loop control. The control has an effect on the currents and voltages. Relying solely on the currents or voltages is difficult to obtain an accurate detection and quantification of the fault. A new online diagnosis method, which takes both currents and voltages into consideration, is proposed in this study. A fault severity factor is proposed to evaluate the extension of the fault, which is almost independent of the control parameters. Furthermore, the method can be applied to different control strategies. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method have been validated by experimental results.

Abstract:Based on principles of artificial immune systems, this paper put forward a fault diagnosis method for induction motor. Compared to the traditional negative selection algorithm, this method is added dynamic detector radius variation and immune memory cells, and improved the fault diagnosis detection rate for induction motor. Through simulation and testing, the validity of this method is proved.

Abstract:AbstrcatTraditional diagnosis methods for low power permanent-magnetic DC motor needs plenty of expert experiences and many measure instruments.This kind of method cannot meet the needs of mass production of motor manufactures because of low efficiency.This paper researched into a fast diagnostic method based on current analysis.Fault features vector were extracted from the armature current both in starting and in static process,in which it includes average static current i_(av),standard deviation i_(std),the frequency of static current f_w,the peak value of staring current i_m and the slope k of vicinal peak value point.The results of experimentation show that five kinds of representative faults on product line of low power permanent-magnetic DC motors can be diagnosed rapidly and conveniently by the methods in this paper.The several representative faults are brush fray.open circuit of components.open weld of components and short circuit between armature coils.

Abstract:Inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) is a common fault in induction motors. However, it is challenging to detect the early stage of ITSC fault. To address this issue, this paper proposes an ITSC fault detection method for three-phase induction motors based on start-up current envelope energy. This approach uses Akima interpolation to calculate the envelope of the measured start-up current of the induction motor. A Gaussian window weighting is applied to eliminate endpoint effects caused by the initial phase angle, and the enveloping energy is obtained using the energy formula as the fault feature. Finally, by combining this with the support vector machine (SVM) classification learner, fault detection of ITSC in induction motors is achieved. The experimental results show that the average accuracy of this method reaches 96.9%, which can quickly and accurately detect ITSC faults in asynchronous motors and determine the severity of the faults. Furthermore, the average accuracy of SVM in detecting early ITSC faults under no-load conditions is 98.8%, which is higher than other classification learners, including LR, KNN, and NN. This study provides a new idea for induction motor fault detection and can contribute to induction motor maintenance.

Abstract:Induction motors (IMs) are the backbone of industry, and play a vital role in daily life as well. However, induction motors face various faults during their operation, which may cause overheating, energy losses, and failure in the motors. Keeping in mind the severity of the issues associated with fault occurrence, this paper proposes a novel method of fault detection in induction motors by using "Machine Vision (MV)" along with "Infrared Thermography (IRT)". It is worth mentioning that the timely prevention of faults in the IM ensures the motor's safety from failures, and provides longer service life. In this work, a dataset of thermal images of an induction motor under different conditions (i.e., normal operation, overloaded, and fault) was developed using an infrared camera without disturbing the working condition of the motor. Then, the extracted thermal images were effectively used for the feature extraction and training by local octa pattern (LOP) and support-vector machine (SVM) classifiers, respectively. In order to enhance the quality of feature extraction from images, the LOP was implemented along with a genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, the proposed methodology was implemented and validated by detecting the faults introduced in an induction motor in real time. In addition to that, a comparative study of the suggested methodology with existing methods also verified the supremacy and effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison to the previous techniques.

Abstract:A modeling and simulation study is presented to investigate the behavior of a squirrel cage induction motor under rotor internal faults. In this paper, a simple approach for modeling of induction machines under rotor internal faults (broken bar and broken end ring) is developed. This model is represented as a system of differential equations. The actual rotor structure is taken into account in this model. And a d-q model is used to describe the 3-phase symmetrical winding stator instead of phase model. Rotor fault is considered by a so-called connectivity matrix. Abstract:Condition monitoring of induction motor has been widely researched over recent years due to its ability to monitor operating characteristics and the health status of induction motor. Various methods have been used to monitor induction motors such as thermal monitoring and vibration analysis. This paper introduces an alternative method which is to use an inductive coupling method to extract in-circuit impedance of induction motor. This method allows for an online measurement of the system under test (SUT) preventing any unnecessary shutdowns. These unnecessary shutdowns may incur a loss of revenue for relevant industries that depends heavily on induction motor operations. Two sets of experiments were conducted in this paper, the first experiment was to examine the accuracy of the proposed method by simulating various SUT using simulated resistor, inductor, and capacitor (RLC) network. The next experiment was to detect incipient stator faults such as turn to turn faults in an induction motor. This proposed method measures the impedance of the stator winding of an induction motor to identify abnormalities. In addition, this method allows for an accurate in-circuit impedance measurement without the influence of motor load and frequency changes as well as faults such as bearing and rotor faults.
